I Was Diagnosed With Cancer, So I Started Drawing Comics To Combat The Terrible Misconceptions About Cancer
I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2014, which included chemotherapy, radiation, multiple surgeries and an ostomy bag. This happened while working full time as a therapist and being married with a small child. I'm currently cancer free, but the experience was a complete life-changer.
To cope with the process, I started drawing up a comic while recovering from my first surgery in the hospital. I drew a cute little owl and Cancer Owl was born. I attempted to articulate what was so hard to articulate in the cancer experience: how it feels to have chemotherapy and radiation, working while in treatment, the emotional highs and lows, combatting the terrible misconceptions about cancer, and dealing with others who (sometimes poorly) attempt to deal with you while going through treatment. I also stuck with drawing animals only, and using bright colors and fun fonts.
Long story short: this resonated with people. Especially those going through the cancer experience. I get messages and emails almost every day, and people started sharing their stories. I've had many people tell me it got through a rough patch or it was the first time they smiled in months. Now that I've told my story through many comics, I devote most of my comics to telling other people's stories. I believe that the more people share their stories, the more we lessen the stigma and help anyone dealing with this damned disease to not feel so alone.

At least 1, maybe 3, and 4 are quite similar to how people talk about depression.
I got this with depression. "You're not the only one to get stressed out with college work" they said. I thought- im stressed out with college work alrite. AND, iv got clinical depression. Or, "just get out of bed and youl feel better" to which... Im in bed BECAUSE i got OUT of bed. X my mum taught me- if u know nothing about anything just smile and shut your mouth x peace x
This is how people talk about depression and chronic illnesses. It's even more depressing, unnecessary, demeaning, and just needs to stop.

One of our family friends lost their daughter to an agressive form of cancer. The sad thing is, doctors kept giving her antibiotics and +
+ Send her back home for about 2 years before they even think of running tests. And when they realized, she was far beyond any cure.

Yeah my continuous bladder infections were also only seen as a woman's problem due to not drink enough and wrong hygiene even after I had only blood in my urine. Antibiotics will do it oh yes. Fortunately my gyn shares his rooms with a specialists for such problems. Turned out it was cancer and had to do four surgeries
Primary an even hospital care for women is p**s poor in the US. How it's often brushed off as a "woman crying pain" makes me really angry. I've had cramps so bad from my period I've felt like I did when I tried to OD, but if a man stubs his toe it's suddenly the end of the world. It stinks as a transman, cuz I'm expected to suck it up and be manly or whatever.
One of the challenges is adjusting to societal expectations of the gender.

"I'll pray for you", or, in layman's terms "I want to act sympathetic but don't want to do anything actually helpful because that takes effort."
Cool way to promote getting active on your community! It sucks that people say these things with no intent behind them.
I've been told to offer specific help, ex. "Do you need supper for the family? a ride? babysitting? shopping? cleaning?"
Americans: http://whoismyrepresentative.com. Its really easy, you just call and talk to an intern, or you leave a message. Or you can email, but calling seems to be more effective - "phone lines were flooded by calls from constituents" is something that gets reported, versus "email inboxes were pretty full."

HOW I GOT CURED OF CANCER My name is Ken Brady, I am from Austrialia, I never thought I would ever be free of Cancer in my life, after been diagnosed with CANCER of the LUNG in 2015, I have tried everything possible in life, from one doctor to another, one hospital to another, series of tests, different kinds of medications. I had already lost hope untiI I saw Dr. SANI's online testimonies, a specialist in herbal medications and treatments, I contacted him (perfectherballife@gmail.com) and he prepared some herbal medications for CANCER for me which I took for about 20 days and now I am completely cured. I want to use this medium to express my gratitude to him for saving my life and curing me from CANCER of the LUNG, for taking away all my pains and sorrows, I'm indeed grateful and I am so happy I'm now free of this Cancer disease. I will forever be grateful and continue to tell the good news of your great works to everyone. If you have any type of CANCER or other Diseases

I hate this attitude in religious people. It's the best example of the worst lack of empathy, all in the service of worshipping their magical sky daddy wish goblin.
Ok I'm a Christian but 'Magical Sky Daddy Wish Goblin' made me laugh for a good five minutes
Load More Replies...Ugh. This is the worst. Along with the "everything happens for a reason" comments. My mom died of cancer, as did my FIL, as did both my dad's parents (my grandparents). I think I've heard every bad comment in the book.
It's easier for apathetic people to invoke "he works in mysterious ways" rather than have actual feelings themselves.
It's not always apathy. It's sometimes their way of finding some kind of solace in the face of a terrible thing (the notion that there's something good to come from it, or whatever). This isn't bad for themselves, but it's terrible to share that thinking with the people who are actually suffering. No one deserves to have their suffering "justified" or excused, especially when it comes from the angle of a belief system they may not themselves share.
Load More Replies...Look, you're making fun of us and our beliefs. Religion has existed for thousands of years and with good reason. There are things in this world that we can't explain, so they do have a basis in reality. You are being obnoxiously disrespectful of others and, as someone who respects cristianity, islam an athism while still remaining adamant in my Jewish beliefs, you're acting like an a*****e who is so insecure in his about his position he feels it's okay to mock others. We respect you, the least you could do is extend the same courtesy to us.
Proof that being biblically accurate has no comedic value. Jace, for the record, people holding signs saying “GOD HATES F**S “ isn’t a true representation of Christians. If you actually knew what true Christianity was and how it works, you wouldn’t see yourself acting like a smartass in some of these commments. I do have sympathy for people like you though
Christian here...you can take your "magical sky daddy wish goblin" sh!t & shove it UP your a$$. Now I'm gonna go pray
Those words don't actually exist in a physical manner. I'd have to write them on something in order to shove them anywhere. How did that praying work out for you? What were you praying for? My death or salvation, or for cancer patients everywhere? Your prayers will impact nothing but your own beliefs, so, just a tip there. Those words you censored are spelled "s**t" and "a*s", by the way. It's good to respect the impact one's words might have on others, but if you're going to use them, don't be a coward about it. Own it.
Load More Replies...It? What it? Cancer? Which god? Humanity has invented so many gods. The Christian "God"? If cancer is from your god, then your god is a real d**k. But no, it's not from any gods. Cancer is a nasty part of nature, but it's also very often (more and more often) a horrible consequence of what we as human beings do with our bodies, our planet, and our planet's materials.

It's true, everyone seems to have an opinion about it. And my mom had to endure every single suggestion. Including, a few weeks before she died, someone making her watch "The Secret" and telling her she just had to want to get better. Fun times.

I've been sick and can't work since 2012. No one calls anymore, I got tired of being the only one "reaching out". The only friend that stuck with me, and we would talk all the time, I haven't talked to since February. Thankfully my husband is awesome and amazing. Also, my pets love that I'm home 24/7. I think, sadly it can be a risk if you're on chemo therapy and someone hugs you. So, I would say, if you want to hug a person with cancer, ask before. maybe I'm wrong, but asking costs nothing, so what.
Sorry to ask, but what is the risk? I don't know much about Chemo, so am curious to know!

Ya know, chemicals in our food, environment and the products we use daily are a major cause of cancer but to cure it, unfortunately we can't just passively wish it away or use some random, newly discovered "power food". Also Ayurvedic medicine IS a thing but it is also scientifically backed (albeit in a different scientific language)-it's not just random s**t like "the internet said Kale so just drink a s**t of it and that's enough" but enough people seem to have 0 scientific knowledge about any type of natural remedy.

I was a door to door sales rep once and I tried to sign up this old man one day. We did a credit score check and he came back with a REALLY low score and it said if he wanted cable, he needed to pay a $200 refundable deposit. He told me that the reason he had such a s****y score is because while he was busy taking care of his ailing wife of 40 years who had cancer, some ASSHAT stole his identity and used all his savings and depleted his bank account. In the end, he could barely afford medicine for his poor wife and she died in so much pain. He didn't even have the $200 for the deposit because he was living paycheck to paycheck, having either lost most of the money to the identity thief or having spent it on his wife. It was an awful story. The look on that man's face when he told me he lost the love of his life...omg.

This comic gets to me so much. My mom was a lifelong vegetarian who faithfully exercised and was really into health. While she had cancer she went vegan, cut out all sugar, and started juicing beats and carrots. She died in 3 years later.

When I was a kid, my mom had osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in her leg and her leg was amputated, but they didn't get it all and the cancer metastasized to her lungs. She had to have chemo, lost her hair, and was often weak and tired. At one point, she was strong enough to be out with me and my dad, but not strong enough to be on her crutches or use her wooden leg. We were at the Fair Oaks mall in Virginia, my dad pushing her in her wheelchair, when a woman and a little girl walked by. The little girl smiled at my mom and waved, but the mom freaked. She started screaming at us for being horrible people and snatched up her child and ran away still screaming insults at my parents. I think she thought my mom was contagious. It was bizarre.
My mom passed away from a 3+ year fight against ovarian cancer almost 5 years ago. These comics are so true. People can be great to cancer patients...but they can also suck. A lot. One "friend" of my mom's didn't see her while she was on chemo but when she'd go into remission she would come around. A month before my mom died my mom called this "friend" hoping to see her since it had been a long time. The "friend" told her that it just was "too sad" for her to be around my mom since she was dying. It broke my mom's heart. At my mom's funeral guess who was the first person up to talk about how great my mom was and what great friends they were? Yup. It was her.
She thought she would clean her hands off guilt. Understandable, but not acceptable.

I LOVE these! I don't have cancer and thankfully no one in my immediate or extended family has had this either-maybe because I come from a nation that, up until now, has lived relatively chemical free (not this generation though-the next gen will be cancer ridden for sure). I love that these are funny but realistic because I had no idea how people actually felt. But some of the stuff in this is just straight up insensitive and it's unbelievable how stupid people can be. Wish there was a post on how to deal with someone who has cancer because I don't know what's 'okay' since I only see what's not. And "be sensitive and use common sense" doesn't always help.
Mostly, it's just about being present and listening, not about giving advice. Empathy, not sympathy.

When I started working there, it was about a half inch long. And I just deadpanned "I had cancer." And he walked off silently.
Great cartoons, but some are quite upsetting. I hope I'll never need it, but, God, I'm so glad I' not American and have access to affordable, high quality treatment. :-/
