The things that you know, all the skills that you’ve honed over the years—all of these can give you a massive advantage in life. Sure, pretty much everyone knows the phrase that knowledge is power, but how often do we realize how true that is? And sometimes that knowledge can make people feel guilty that they know it at all. The burden’s just too big to bear.
Some bits of info feel practically illegal to know even if they’re technically not. From being able to pick locks to knowing how atomic bombs work and how people taste and more, Reddit users opened up about the most esoteric, ‘forbidden’ pieces of knowledge they’ve accidentally stumbled upon.
We’ve collected the most honest and intriguing insights from these two r/AskReddit threads right here and here to give you a glimpse into a darker, more uncomfortable side of real-life, Pandas. Read on, upvote the answers that impressed you the most, and share your own bits of info that feel illegal to know in the comments. But before you do, take a look around to check if the FBI and CIA aren’t nearby in an unmarked white van.
Pssst, Pandas, if you’d like even more captivating but dark facts, you should definitely check out Bored Panda’s earlier article right here.
Bored Panda reached out to Steven Wooding for a chat about 'forbidden' knowledge, limiting access to information, and responsibility. Steven is a member of the Institute of Physics in the UK and part of the Omni Calculator Project team. He created the Weird Units Converter.
"There have to be some limits to information, for the protection of the general public and those trying to use such information," Steven shared with us. "One area where this is common is in the field of computer security. The fine details of how to do an exploit are withheld to stop low-level hackers from simply following a recipe to cause havoc on the internet. We mustn't make it too easy for bad people to do bad things." Read on for the full interview.

Steven absolutely believes that people have more and more responsibility, the more information they know. "If you know potential dangerous information, you should protect it from the general public, or more specifically, people who would do bad things," he explained to us.
"That's why government labs in sensitive areas keep the information they have a secret to protect the general public from threatening uses of that information," he added.

Mate, all adults have no idea what they are doing. I guess being adult, is owning what you do!
Bored Panda wanted to know if scientists have a duty to figure out the truth about how the world works or if there have to be some limits in place. "You probably can't stop things from being discovered. If you ban it in one country, another will pursue it to gain a competitive advantage. And if all countries agree on a ban, some curious people will probably continue to work on it," Steven shared his opinion.
"In general, I think we should learn about everything about how the world and universe work. It's how that knowledge is applied later on that is debatable," he said that the focus has to be on how that knowledge is then used, not the actual fact that you know something.
You could argue that human beings are hardwired for curiosity. We want to know as much about the world as we can because our survival depends on it. And the more fringe the knowledge, the more obscure the facts, the more curious some of us get. This applies both to real-life facts, as well as to entertainment. ‘Forbidden’ knowledge and learning about the dark side of humanity are hard to resist. Especially in the digital age where so much information is just a few internet searches away.

"When considering why the darker side of humanity and entertainment are so compelling, we have to first look at our evolutionary journey as human beings. For the majority of our existence, we were prey and always hyperaware of threats to our safety, which created a negativity bias that we are drawn towards," psychologist Lee Chambers told Bored Panda earlier.
"But in today's safe and often sanitized world, we are rarely threatened significantly, and the ability to explore evil, frightening and gruesome entertainment is one of the few ways we can visit this part of humanity while remaining safe and comfortable. There is a level of novelty to it, it removes boredom quickly, and it helps us to discover our emotional limits while understanding the minds of those who go beyond social norms and potentially gaining knowledge of how we might avoid being victims ourselves. They also offer closure, with many stories ending with the mystery being solved, and the criminal being brought to a level of justice," the mental health expert explained to us why exploring the darker aspects of humanity hooks and reels so many people in.
Healthcare in the US doesn't actually cost as much as we, the citizens, are led to believe.
100% its the insurance companies. I work for a medical equipment comapny(wheelchairs, beds etc) and the hoops we have to jump through are ridiculous. It takes less paperwork to get opiates than to get a wheelchair. In the US your doctor does not determine what is medically necessary, your insurance company does
Insurance hack: the first time it is denied, call the insurance and ask for the HIPAA Compliancy Officer. It is a federal requirement that they have one. They will either transfer you or ask you why. Tell them you need the names and the credentials of every person accessing the record to make the denial decision. You have a right to this information under law. They will usually place you on hold for a while and then just come back and say the denial was sent in error and you were approved. Insurance companies will do this so they can avoid admitting the denial was decided by a high school graduate with no medical training looking for criteria words to deny the claim. Rarely it will be someone with medical training, but this person will not be a board certified doctor in the specialty the claim is for and the insurance company will do everything they can to hide that information.
Load More Replies...In capitalism, something costs as much as people are willing to pay, which just happens to work strongly in favor of the medical and kidnapping industries.
Worse, insurance leans on providers to significantly mark up the price, so it looks impressive when you copay. But, everyone ends up paying more because of insurance than if the public just negotiated prices directly. Insurance is a legal cartel. Their purpose is to make money, not care about health.
Load More Replies...Yep. Medicine I get 30 for $9.00 copay is $12.00 per pill or more through the hospital. I get all of it for less than the copay using Mark Cuban's website. Insurance is a crime racket.
OP probably refers to the cost of production and providing and not the billed prices that are paid. Because profit>health.
Insurance companies make healthcare expensive. I know it sounds counter intuitive. Universal healthcare is the only way to go.
Insurance companies don’t set the rates you pay at the doctor. If insurance had their way, your healthcare would be dirt cheap because they could keep all your premium instead of having to turn around and pay high claims.
Load More Replies...I'm in the process of getting itemized bills for my husband's heart attack treatment and the 2 subsequent surgeries. Yes, we have insurance but you get billed for a lot of things and don't know unless you have an itemized bill. Also, if you don't have insurance they will quote you a reduced rate for services.
Be sure you tell your insurance company what you find on the bills. If you can find that you are being overcharged you can get them to join in the fight. Also ALWAYS report being charged for services you didn’t receive. Your insurance company definitely will want to know that and will fight for you in those cases.
Load More Replies...I've just learned today that when Michael Moore made his film Sicko, he send a film crew to Norway to interview people about their experiences with healthcare there. The interviews did not make it into the film. About a year later he stated in an interview that they had to cut out everything about Norway because they judged that no American would believe it. So they settled by showing the less impressive french healthcare system. The problem was that Americans didn't believe that either...
Yeah better phrasing would be "Healthcare in general doesn't cost nearly as much as we in the US are billed for it."
Let me rephrase that for you - ‘basic healthcare costs nowhere as much as you are made to pay’!
- in the united states of america.. we cant let anyone get it wrong and think it costs the same ANYWHERE els
Load More Replies...Exactly, does it f**k, as a kid I would dream of living in America , as an adult it sounds like and is a nightmare 😥
For those wondering, this means that the hospital pays, like, $72 for that $10,000 object
Here's how it works. To get patients, doctors will sign up to take an insurance. That insurance says how much they will pay the doctor for different procedures. The doctor agrees to take that, plus the co-pay for payment in full. So say you go in for a sick patient checkup. The doctor wants to charge you $150 for that visit, but the insurance says they only take $75. So the doctor takes the $75, plus your co-pay (which could be nothing or as much as $50) as payment in full. The rest is written off as an "adjustment". If you go in and don't have insurance, usually, the will have a different rate than the $150 that they will charge you, because they only want the $150 for the appointment because if they asked for $100 the insurance company would pay them $65 instead.
You are mostly correct and I am so happy to see someone who has as much knowledge as you do on the process. However, your copay, coinsurance and deductible is built into that contracted rate. So if you have a $25 copay and the contracted rate is $75 then the insurance will pay $50 and apply the other $25 to the patients responsibility. The provider contractually cannot collect more than the $75 from them and the patient UNLESS the insurance isn't contracted. Then the provider is not obligated to adjust of the balance and can bill the patient.
Load More Replies...I worked for a hospital and know for a fact that a test I had done cost less than the co-pay even though it was 95% covered by my "insurance".
Really, it comes downs to what the profits are being used for. I'd be more willing to pay a higher cost, if I knew the profits were being used to benefit society. But as most hospitals don't offer research in any way shape or form, the vast majority of medical profits line the pockets of big wigs.
This info has been thrown out there for years, yet no one is stepping up
Plenty of people are stepping up. But people have to vote for them in order for any of it to be enacted.
Load More Replies...Thye get away with charging us more because our politicians are bought off. That's why the exact same medicine or procedures cost less in other countries. They have price regulations and more honest politicians.
"Actual cost" of careflight: $10,200. My billed cost? $36,523. It was a 7 minute flight.
Of course not. Corporate greed. They could make a good profit. Instead they make a GREAT profit. Crappy for consumers.
I think if it cost as much as you are billed, the health system would collapse as no one would be able to afford it. Bring on the Universal health system in the US.
Whoa!!! The expense does not match the bill. But due to the sick US insurance system the bill is astronomical.
Who do you think pays for those without insurance? You do. The hospital has to recoup losses some how.
This is true. Those bandages they charge you $10 each for (the clear ones to hold the i.v in) cost them roughly forty cents.
A big part of the problem is insurace companies themselves. "In network" means they tell the doctors how much to charge, effectively killing competitive pricing. Which encourages doctors to nickel and dime to make a profit. Not to mention they create overhead from billing, appealing, etc. Hell, United Healthcare decided they should charge us, the clinic, for sending our money electronically at the start of the year. They wanted 5% of all electronic payments they sent us (a convince fee).
That’s right sometimes but not all of the time. It works the opposite as well where a mega hospital or doctor group can say “Insurance, you have to pay us 3x what you pay everyone else or we won’t accept your patients. And you’ll be in violation of regulations that require you to have a healthy doctor and hospital network and therefore go out of business. So pay up, or we will just contract with your competitor instead forcing you to lose all your premium payers”
Load More Replies...I'm not sure I'm following the debate about insurance companies so I'll just mention what I see on my bills. I'm making up these figure but you'll get the jist. Hospital charges $1,000. Insurance states that the service rendered is only worth $200. They pay 80% (we have pretty good insurance) We pay $40.00. I have no idea what people with no insurance are billed. Do they get that $1,000. bill with no recourse?
Case in point: one of my prescriptions. At the local pharmacy, the name brand is 3000usd per month, and the generic version is 1000usd per month. Those prices are my out of pocket cost AFTER my TWO health insurance policies. Via mail order, I get a 3-month supply for 10usd.
It doesn't cost that much. That's what we are being *charged* BC the companies care more abt $$ than patients.
Someone caught me by the tail the other day. It grew back on its own but the ambulance cost 10000 dollars
A singke cough drop is a couple cents at most. Not 14$ and most medicine they mass produce costs about the same.
As seen in Europe. Same with car insurance, it doesn't have to cost 3000 pounds a year
Had a doctor years ago that would bill insurance $150/visit but charged me $75/visit when I lost my insurance. I asked about the difference and they said it was a “billing fee.”
I got charged $38 for a thin blanket I didn't get to keep. The gown on the other hand is free, and they won't take it from you if you walk out wearing it... :)
This. I mean, all you have to do is compare how much a drug costs to produce and how much you get charged for it.
It's not doctors that make these decisions...it's the insurance companies and big pharma

Afforadable Care Act, ie, Obamacare, ie, affordable health insurance. So sick of seeing posts about how nobody in the US has health insurance. I have it through my job, as a lot of people do.
Of course not. Healthcare in the US is a business. And everyone is making money on your health. From the doctor, to the hospital ceo, to the hospital shareholders, to your insurance company, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment companies, and ancillary providers like laboratories, home health, and therapy providers. Very little healthcare in the US is set up as a charity. Everyone wants their pound of flesh.
That is b******t and you know it. Dont try to defend your stupid healthcare by lies!

Doctors live in mansions, and the nurses who actually do all the work, can live in a trailer park, for all they care. Doctors think they are gods.
That's wrong - not all doctors live in mansions at all. I personally know doctors who live paycheck to paycheck. The high cost of health care in the U.S. is 100% down to Richard Nixon & his cronies making health care "for profit" back in 1973. https://1md.org/article/for-profit-healthcare-1md

The psychologist pointed out that some people find it comforting when they’re exposed to evil things being done in the form of entertainment, e.g. on screen. The audience feels safe but can go on an emotional inner journey.
"It can take us on an emotional rollercoaster, have us trying to solve the puzzle and test our fear in a controlled way. The permission to explore evil is powerful, as we so rarely get the chance elsewhere, and in itself, it is healthy and normal in moderation," Lee said that this is why so many folks love true crime entertainment. It’s the forbidden aspect of it that entices so many viewers and listeners to tune in day in, day out.

Statistics are super easy to manipulate to say whatever you want. I see so many commercials and other companies that try to claim their product is the best according to these statistics, but really, they fail to meet basic rules and ethics in statistics. Still, even if they were to follow all the rules of statistics, there are many ways to manipulate it to your advantage.
There's lies, damn lies and there is statistics. Oh, and then there is Boris Johnson....
However, consuming too much dark content isn’t all that healthy for us. “The challenge we face is the fact that consuming too much of this can desensitize us, and cause us to become less empathetic to the suffering of others, more fearful of our own environment, and potentially be more likely to use aggression ourselves,” the psychologist warned.
“It can also cause us to be triggered by our own previous adverse experiences, make it harder to manage our own emotional balance, and increase our stress levels, so moderating our consumption is something we should have front of mind, even when we get embroiled in the latest series that is pulling us in."

That restaurants often do really disgusting things and have disgusting issues.
I used to waitress and then later manage a pizza place — mosquitos in the drain, nests of mice, stink bug infestations, flies feasting on food that falls behind the appliances that isn’t cleaned up frequently like it’s supposed to be, mold in the soda machine, expired ingredients still being used, etc.
It’s just.. a lot. I was very, very surprised. I knew that most restaurants naturally deal with these things from time to time, but I didn’t expect it to be this often. I also didn’t expect for management to be so nonchalant about going against inspections and regulations.
Other restaurants that friends of mine have managed/otherwise worked at have also had similar issues and it’s pretty wild.
I’ve never eaten at the restaurant that I worked at since quitting. I wouldn’t trust it.

Out of date now, but some users might remember the AACS encryption key controversy. Back in the HDDVD days, you couldn't just clone a disc to share a movie with someone else because you needed an encryption key. Someone figured the key out and put it on Digg (which at the time functioned a lot like Reddit), which then got a cease and desist order. That backfired, as users spread the encryption key far and wide. Sharing the key felt like you were participating in a huge crime network, even though there's nothing wrong with copying and pasting a hexadecimal code.

I just bought a regular Dreamcast, downloaded a copy of the game from Napster or Limewire or whatever totally illegal software I was using, and then burn it onto a CD and I was ready to go. I just bought a regular Dreamcast, downloaded a copy of the game from Napster or Limewire or whatever totally illegal software I was using, and then burn it onto a CD and I was ready to go. Unfortunately, most Dreamcast games weren't worth playing.
Okay that formatting is really clever. But the Dreamcast had some real gems on it.
Load More Replies...I've got one. Your address and phone number is not private information. My job has taught me how to find that information on just about anyone as long as you have a first and last name, or some part of the information already. Plenty of sites will offer you information as a subscription service, but will give you enough for free that you can check it with other sites. Just about every piece of information on the Internet will connect with something else, allowing you to easily find someone's address and phone number, including their living history for themselves and family.
Yup...I started with zabasearch...was my fave...

I know where all the dye packs are and where they are kept in teller drawers. I know the location of all secret alarms and the security phrase that the police will use under a hostage situation to call in for all clear signal. The only thing I don't physically have is the dual combo to the vault. Most bank vaults have 750K or less in them. As an auditor, I could easily walk in before the branch opens, force the two tellers to open the vault and then leave. Sure I'll be on camera, but I'll smash the phone box that controls the alarms and take their cell phones. That will give me a good amount of time to run 😆
I use ad free software for everything. If it doesn't work for commercials I speed up the video 5x.
My friend's dad is an EMT, and my friend found the handbook on how to make medicine. It tells you how to make many illegal substances in there.
Bollocks. EMTs aren't pharmacologists, they don't make medicine themselves. More likely your friend found a formulary, which is merely a book containing all current drugs, their usage, known side-effects and interactions/contraindications.
