30 People Share Their Favorite Low-Effort Comfort Meals That Require 3 Ingredients Or Less
InterviewWe all know that the world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows—at some point, things get a bit too much for us and we start feeling overwhelmed. Maybe you’re burned out at work or stressed because of some relationship trouble. Perhaps you’ve had a major setback when it comes to your beloved creative projects. Many of us deal with this by snuggling under a cozy blanket, putting on a nostalgic TV show, and eating something tasty.
There’s nothing quite like comfort food to pick up your mood and make you see the bright side of things! Internet users revealed the quick and easy comfort meals they love making whenever they’re feeling blue in a thread on r/Cooking, and we’ve collected their best ideas. We know we’ll be trying a few of these instead of reaching for that pint of ice cream the next time we’re down.
Bored Panda reached out to the author of the thread, u/actuallyboa, who opened up about how food is both a form of art and love for them. We also got in touch with Andrea Bonior, Ph.D., the host of the mental health advice podcast ‘Baggage Check’ and the bestselling author of ‘Detox Your Thoughts,' to better understand why we find food so comforting and why moderation and mindful eating are so important. Read on for both of our interviews.

A classic grilled cheese sandwich made with sourdough bread, sharp cheddar, and Kerrygold salted butter.
Grilled low and slow for maximum crunch. The roof of your mouth will heal.
Ciabatta's good. Nice thick slice, lots of garlic butter, then a layer of blue cheese (or mozzarella), then grilled to your liking. Mmm, now I want some :)
Load More Replies...Dr. Bonior, the host of the 'Baggage Check' podcast, explained to Bored Panda that food experiences have strong associations with memories, "not only because our senses are involved but because they become traditions that are conditioned to make us feel a certain way because of the context of how we shared the food in the past." Our sense of smell, particularly, is very closely connected to our emotional memories.
"Many times we might associate certain meals with a certain loved one, or feeling safe and taken care of during childhood, or having a leisurely day of something being cooked or baked. Also, tasty food improves our mood almost instantaneously—not only satisfying the physical aspect of hunger but bringing pleasure," she said.
A tomato sandwich. All you need is tomato, mayonnaise, and sliced bread. I have this most summer days when fresh local tomatoes are at their peak. It's probably the meal I eat most often.
My mother used to make tomato sandwiches (with butter not mayo) when I was ill but getting better. I knew it was time to get up when she stopped cutting the crusts off😂. I had tomato sandwiches for breakfast on the morning of my wedding
When our own cherry tomatoes are eipest I only use a tad of our own garden herb improved Kerry gold butter and this. I could enjoy that for bf, lunch and dinner....
Has to be real or home made mayonnaise but I agree with this wholeheartedly
A slice of tasty aged gouda instead of mayo, and some salt and pepper...
I like it with fresh basil on it, I realize this brings the ingredients to four.
I love to cut up a carrot or two and throw them in a foil packet with some olive oil and ginger. Salt to taste, seal up the packet and bake until you can smell it. Usually 20-30 minutes but I’ve left them for 45 before and they just get more caramelized. They end up sweet and savory and I can eat a whole bowl of it with nothing else added. Maybe some fresh ground pepper but not always. The ginger adds a great *something* to it.
We use garlic salt and a drizzle of honey. Always have to make double as the kids hoover them up
I'm going to say: bless you for this!!! Bc my son- who refuses to eat- but is learning - said carrots were 'ok' but said they needed sugar - I am going to make him this tomorrow!!!! And I can't wait to see if he will now have an orange food to eat! Lol
That "je ne sais quoi." I plan to test out this very idea this weekend.
try maple syrup or pure honey instead of sugar. I say " pure honey", bc some "honey" sold these days is a mixture of honey and corn syrup.
Load More Replies...Bored Panda was also interested to learn more about having a healthy relationship with comfort food so that we don't overeat every time we're stressed. "I think it's important not to be all-or-none. No food is inherently 'bad' in moderation (unless it's poison!) So, if you think that a particular comfort food isn't necessarily the healthiest, why not try a smaller portion and pair it with something else that is more healthful, or substitute just one aspect of it for something healthier," Dr. Bonior gave some spot-on advice.
For instance, one thing that you could do is make mac n cheese with whole wheat noodles. Or bake a delicious chocolate cake with a bit less sugar. Something else that can help us get more from the comfort food experience, according to Dr. Bonior, is slowing down and eating more mindfully, "really pausing while we eat to truly take in how the food looks, how it smells, and to chew it slowly to notice the taste."
Moreover, serving the comfort food in a "particularly pretty way" can make the entire experience more of a ritual that's focused on relaxation and taking a break from all the stress and problems in your life. "By slowing it down and making it an event that you embrace, you'll enjoy it more, feel less guilty about it later, and actually be less likely to let it turn into a binge that you try to shame yourself for later."
Baked potato with butter and shredded cheddar
You want some crisps? :) 31C72AA6-0...ff-png.jpg
Put stuff like butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, chili, broccoli and assorted add-ons like that -- it's a meal.
Needs baked beans!! Needs beans. Quick, grab some beans (under the cheese, of course).
Again, add bacon. (I know: this is like tell me you’re American without telling me-)
This! So true. 😂 it's very much a Canadian thing as well.
Load More Replies...I think that some green veg is in there (broccoli or spinach?) I bake potatoes, stuff the halves with veg and cheese, and freeze them. They are quick to thaw and heat for a 'Comfort meal" or a quick meal.
Cinnamon toast
As a kid I used to always make buttered toast sprinkled with sugary cinnamon, it was so good
Yep, this was a staple snack where I grew up. Gotta add the sugar or else it tasted terrible lol
Load More Replies...Weird pic. Cinnamon toast is toast, butter, and cinnamon/sugar sprinkled on top. Tastes like my childhood. Especially if the cinnamon sugar mix comes out of the bear shaped bottle. :) (It's a brand in the US)
My parents always made our cinnamon and sugar mix as there was no commercial one available where we were (Northeast US). It was in a glass parmesan cheese shaker mom bought at the restaurant supply store in town. Now that McCormacks makes one I do buy it but the proportions arent the same as dad mixing it himself (we liked his ratios a bit better than mom's so it became his permanent job along with breakfast in general). I have never seen a bear shaped bottle though, that is just for honey up here - maybe it's regional?
Load More Replies...Bread, honey and cinnamon for me is the best sweet slice that get the blood shugar down
For the best result, heavily butter the bread, sprinkle with sugar and THEN sprinkle on the cinnamon. Broil until the sugar starts to bubble. One of my husband's favorites.
A toasted slice of a crusty Italian bread dipped in good, flavored olive oil. Add something like salt, pepper, garlic, or grated Parmesan if you're feeling ambitious.
Actually, that's crostini (toasted french/Italian bread slices), bruschetta is the tomato mixture that tops crostini 🤷♀️
Load More Replies...Or you could go with Garibaldi favorite, Bagna Cauda. It goes Roughly. Like: Heat 1l olive oil, add 1 lbs of excellent butter, some fresh Italian garden herbs, use either fresh Crust bread or 1/1/1/1! And so on mixes of good say alpine cheese/black bread on a spike, voila. Incredibly. Simple,. Non-good for arteries or similar, INCREDIBLE for your taste buds!!
A French exchange student that stayed with my family would put balsamic vinegar in the olive oil and dip the bread in. It is f*****g amazing!
If you do garlic, drizzle the bulb in oil, wrap it in foil, and bake it until it is soft. Mmmmmm.
Meanwhile, the author of the r/Cooking thread, redditor u/actuallyboa, shared how they were enjoying a snack of buttered rice with tamari and were fascinated by how this simple food was so delicious. "I wanted to know about others’ experiences with simply comforting dishes they like to make," they told Bored Panda that they couldn't wait to hear what some other redditors thought.
"In my opinion, these simple foods represent a combination of nostalgia and certainty. Because they aren’t overly complicated, I believe we can taste them with our 'mind’s tongue' and when we enjoy them, it brings forth a lot of satisfaction and perhaps even good memories, making them perfect comfort foods. Some people value quantity when it comes to food, others value quality, but either way, we all have something delicious that brings us joy."
We also wanted to find out about some other comfort foods that redditor u/actuallyboa values. "I love the clean simplicity of sushi, the heartiness of good meats and cheeses, and the nourishment and comfort that comes with wholesome soups. With soup, the simpler, the better. These foods offer enjoyment to me on many different levels, because to me, food is both a form of art and a form of love."
Simple toast. Preferably with decent bread, at least Italian or sourdough. Toast it until it's really toasted not just warm bread and slather with Irish butter. Toast is one of my top 5 favorite foods.
I like to butter heavily, then toast until parts of the bread are crispy-crunchy and other parts rich in flavor. Really tasty on bagels too. Yes I have high cholesterol.
Load More Replies...High fat (=high flavor). Added or spread on anything starchy (breads, potatoes, etc.), it makes it taste so much better!
Load More Replies...Toast is amazing! Unless you just smell it and find out you are having a stroke.
Tortilla filled with sharp cheddar and jalapenos, crisped up with oil in a frying pan.
Or better known as a cheese and jalapeno quesadilla.
Actually, there's been a debate in Mexico about whether or not a quesadilla has to have cheese to be called a quesadilla. No me preguntes, yo no lo sé.
Load More Replies...sharp means it's been aged a few months longer than mild cheddar. it's tangier and the texture is harder
Load More Replies...Sometimes I just make it with cheeese. But thats also usually when ive been drinking......
My mom sometimes just microwaved this for me- my friends called it polish tacos- hahahahaha... I called it delicious. And everyone I know still eats it!
Pasta, parmesan, butter.
Oh, never thought of that. Angel hair is mine, but I will try orzo.

We’re willing to wager that the absolute majority of humankind loves comfort food. Whether we’re aware of it or not, many of us gravitate to specific meals and snacks. Usually, they’re not just delicious—they have a nostalgic component, too.
Maybe you gravitate to a snack that you used to eat when you were a kid during some of the happiest moments of your childhood. Or you might make a dish that reminds you of what your mom or grandma used to make for you to show their love.
Our sense of smell and taste are both very powerful, and they can instantly remind us of the good old days. A perfect antidote to feeling down, and a great way to take a well-earned break from all the stress.
gin and tonic
I'm on the gin and tonic diet. So far I've lost 2 days!
Can't use this as a comfort drink - they don't refer to gin as "mother's ruin" for no reason. It just makes me cry, so a bad situation becomes worse. Once, I started crying because I realised we had cats. And the cats were cute. So cute, it seemed worth crying about. I've been forbidden from touching him ever since, probably for the best.
Alcohol isn’t a comfort drink! It makes nothing better. They’re called spirits for a reason. If you can’t go a month without alcohol, you’ve got a problem.
Load More Replies...A caprese salad made with ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil. Drizzle with balsamic or Italian dressing.
Although I prefer my home grown ingredients I do purchase tomatoes off season as this is yummy.
Load More Replies...When I can’t find a GOOD tomato(pretty much any time but summer when I can get them from a friends garden) I’ll use roasted red peppers instead and it’s so good.
If you're bringing an app to a party try putting a grape tomato, a small bail leaf and a cube mozzarella on a toothpick with balsamic vinegar drizzle over it. Very appealing visually and oh so good! Always a hit :)
My garden has baby basil & my tomato seedlings are doing well in hopes of having a nice caprese salad. Unfortunately my mozzarella plant hasn't sprouted yet 😖
Those mozzarella plants can be a pain. Takes forever and you still end up just going to the store out of frustration 🤣
Load More Replies...Some onions/cucumbers….like eating spring. Place I live has horrible pollen issues. But, over the course of waiting, pollen so heavy you can’t just use wipers, ridiculous. But one day you’ll be driving with the windows down and hear/smell mowing and it smells like clover and spring onions the pollen stops. Wonderful scent.
fried rice
All you need is rice, egg, shallot/onion and some meat (optional). I’m not counting salt, pepper etc. here though
It’s easy and quick to make, and always my go to food when I’m sad
When im sad I sit in a warm bath and drink whiskey while eating a bowl of mashed potatoes. Wouldnt even be something to mention if I hadnt realized how often I actually did this.
Growing up, the local Chinese restaurant made fried rice that was traditional with the exception of the protein: bacon. I make it that way to this day, and if you can get over the idea of bacon in a Chinese dish, it’s so delicious!
Fried rice? Try good old diced up spam as the protein. I used it once because j had nothing else handy and included it ever since. Funnily enough, after using it several times it actually showed up in several fried rice recipes online, so it's not weird. And spam is ham so not far off from bacon. 😉
That also sounds good, especially if you fry it first to get lots of crispy bits.
Load More Replies...However, it’s not just nostalgic dishes that help pick us up! We also gravitate toward high-fat and sweet foods because they reward our brains. The problem is, however, that if you’re constantly eating comfort food, your health might suffer in the long term. Our bodies need far more than just ice cream, chocolate, and french fries to survive. (Oh, trust us, we’re not judging anyone; we’re very partial to drowning our sorrows in food—we know what it’s like.)
There are some other ways to deal with stress and sadness that don’t necessarily involve over-indulging in calories while spending 8 hours on the couch binge-watching whatever Netflix throws at you. For one, you could opt for healthier versions of comfort food, e.g. something that you make yourself. A pint of double-choco salted caramel cookie dough ice cream is great. But maybe cinnamon toast makes you feel better, too? Or something made with fresh ingredients, say, a salad your relatives used to make when you were visiting them in the country?
Hummus mixed with a good hot sauce on naan. It might sound like a weird combo, but it's pretty spectacular in practice.
the souls are the only good part and those are more essence aren't spreadable but i think they r trying to make them spreadable tho
Load More Replies...And if you happen to have any cucumber, slice it thin, put it on, yum!
For me it’s tortilla with hummus and yellow bell pepper. But also this, and also hummus on pita bread with garlic sauce… just yeah hummus on any kind of special bread with some extra contrasting flavour, mm-mmm.
I often mix paprika with hummus and have it with naan or other types of flatbread.
I like making hummus from scratch as you can adjust the saltiness and amount of sumac. Great at any time!
You use sumac in hummus? Never tried it. I like to put a little bit more tahini than the one I buy has though. Is the sumac giving it a sour taste? I love sour
Load More Replies...WHy weird? Naan is not really all that different from many types of pita. Yes, people, there are dozens of types of bread that are called "pita" in the Middle East. From stuff which is half as thick as focaccia to ones which are so thin that they have to be kept in between damp towels until eaten (roll those with labneh and olive oil, mmmmm). Different ways of baking as well.
Ramen noodles w sesame oil and chopped scallion.
I just poach the egg(s) in with the noodles and save myself a step.
Load More Replies...sesame oil and soy sauces are the "magic" ingredients in so many great meals
Break an egg into it, stir vigorously, and the egg will get cooked with the heat of the hot noodles
I love ramen so much, I learned how to make the 16 hour tonkatsu broth and pork chashu myself. The ajitama was always my favourite part though!
Fried cabbage with bacon and onions or leeks, or same with butter and parsley. With salt and pepper and maybe a fried egg and some toast, it's got for the gods at any meal.
Sounds similar to haluski. I usually add kielbasa to my haluski but bacon would work too.
I would never think to make that, but now that I am thinking of it, I want to make it.
It's delicious. I personally like it really well done.
Load More Replies...It's an old Irish staple but would be bacon ribs and cabbage. Slow cook the ribs after rinsing in plain water (slow boil, and my butcher cuts the rack to big pan size pieces) once they are tender (couple of hours really slow cooked) remove and throw DARK green cabbage (called spring greens in most supermarkets uk and really cheap) and you spuds in to cook in the bacon juice. 😋😋😍🥰 Nicest and cheapest meal ever!!! Oh and edit is because I forgot to finish with this - once the potatoes and cabbage is done use some of the juice like a gravy on your plate and add a good soda bread with lashings of butter to mop it up 🤗😉
In USA, i have a hard time getting dark green cabbage. Most places remove the outer leaves and all you get is lightly colored center. Sigh.
Load More Replies...My Hungarian relatives do one with fried cabbage, pasta, bacon, curd cheese and sugar. Combination of savoury and sweet sounds strange but it’s true comfort food.
Is curd cheese another term for something like cottage cheese, or is it just cheese curds sold plain?
Load More Replies...I like to add carrots (grated or finely chopped) and maybe some pepper and tomato sauce.
However, it’s not just eating that makes us feel better. If you’re constantly under pressure and having to juggle fear, anger, and exhaustion, you need to manage that ASAP for the sake of your physical, emotional, and mental health. That starts with the basics.
Remember to stay hydrated. Get plenty of sleep. Move lots. Get away from the screen and meet some people face to face. Nostalgic nibbles help get us through the toughest of times, but it’s essential that you don’t drown in memories of the past while neglecting the present. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got some snacks to look for…
Good old fashioned PB&J sandwich
I like a good PBJ but that picture looks both disgusting and overly complicated.
The bread shouldnt be toasted IMO. Also another amazing one is toasted bread with peanut butter, sliced banana, and honey. DROOL!!!!!!
Honey roasted peanut butter, just the right amount of crunchy and creamy... 😋

Mujadara…caramelized onions, rice, and lentils. Yum!
So that’s what my rice and lentils is missing: caramelized onions! Must try…
It's so good. The key is to deeply caramelize the onions. When I make this, I'll spend at least half an hour caramelizing onions. I've never found a shortcut to that. Any recipe that says "5 minutes" lies. Also, if you take some of those onions and crisp them up, then sprinkle them on top: lentil heaven.
Load More Replies...Yes. There are many various on the spelling. But the same gorgeous flavour.

Boxed macaroni and cheese.
My sister is lactose intolerant, she just takes Lactaid before eating any dairy products.
Load More Replies...Grew up poor so the cheap, store brand is my choice for lunch when home sick. I can make better bowls just as easy but the grainy cheese makes me tells my brain everything will be ok.
Being from the UK we could never buy the boxed stuff. Always saw it in films and tv shows and wanted to try it. Finally visited the States and bought some. Worst disappointment ever! Synthetic day glo orange sludge. But true home made macaroni cheese is the ultimate comfort food.
And throw in some other cheeses you have on hand, such as Parmesan.
Popcorn 🍿
And pop it on the stove! Way better than the microwave.
Load More Replies...Add mix of garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, paprika, and black pepper.
Tried these all separately and loved them.. IDK why I hadn't done black pepper until earlier today, it was great! Tajin is also good

I love popcorn with milk. Also roasted foxnut tastes amazing to me.
My favorite comfort food of all time is hot steamed white rice, a pat of butter, and tamari or soy sauce. It is simple perfection.
Or: steamed white rice, a pat of butter, some sugar an some cinnamon. Yum.
People think I'm crazy for putting sugar on my rice. It's a favorite breakfast for me.
Load More Replies...My favorite is just white rice and a bunch of creole seasoning like Tony Chachere's, nothing else.
Me too! I don't put butter in mine but I put some hot sauce and maybe chia seeds if I'm feeling it.
Growing up we would use brown rice and then add nutritional yeast on top of the butter wand tamari. So, so good comfort food.
Our version adds some concentrated mint and brown sugar, but yeah, I remember now, thank you!!
Pyrogies, carmelized onions, sour cream
I swear to get my grandmother’s recipe before she passes. My dad’s entire family is Eastern European.
this is only a simple dish if you buy the peirogi from someone else (preferably an old slavic women at a church sale)...making peirogi is not simple...but, my god, peirogi with carmelized onions and sour cream is a meal for the ages
There's nothing really that complicated in pierogi. It just takes a looooot of time.

Spam musubi: Spam, Japanese short-grain white rice, and nori.
I have a friend from Guam who introduced this simple dish to me. It is amazing.
I use the LIte Spam, since the regular is way too salty to me. So try that version if you're wary of Spam, in general. And remember it's just a type of sausage.
I live on Oahu and the ladies at my high school make this for lunch sometimes- it’s amazing!
have an upvote. i personally love spam and seaweed, but not everyone does!
Load More Replies...Looks pretty different; I’d be interested if I was allowed rice (dietary issues) and tolerate nori. That is one food I can can take only tiny amounts of. But I loovvveeee!!!!! Spam.
Egg drop soup is chicken broth, eggs, soy sauce and green onions. That's four but close enough. Add sesame oil optionally
Made this for the first time last year. It was beyond amazing! Couldnt imagine having it without sesame oil though. I love that stuff.
Love egg drop. Must have crunchies, though. Went on a wild hare once and threw in raw spinach and shaved Parmesan. Parmesan does settle but you can cut off chunks with your spoon easily; flavor is great
Goya boxed yellow rice with a can of black beans and diced raw onion. Costs about tree fiddy, is filling, and brain dead easy to make. Remarkably tasty and the raw onion adds a crunchy texture that makes the dish work.
Me too, and the photo definitely looks like cooked onion to me. It’s basically a Pollo Tropical bowl without the meat- for a fraction of the price.
Load More Replies...I might get downvoted for this, but I haven’t bought Goya products since they donated money to a certain Cheeto-in-Chief’s campaign. Odd considering his stance on immigration.
Yeah, i do stop and think about these things. We cant keep complaining about the state of things and also just buy whatever.

Try seasoned black beans a can of chicken. And salsa all in a bowl then the micro for 2 mins. Cheap easy and filling
Tomato Bread
1. cut the best tomato you can find in half and grate it against the large holes of a box grater into a bowl with a paper towel folded at the bottom of the bowl, add salt and stir
2. Slice of sourdough goes in the toaster
3. Peel a garlic clove. You have a little time to clean the box grater, knife, cutting board.
4. Remove the paper towel, the tomato will have released a lot of water from the salt. At this point, add a dash of nice olive oil and a couple turns of black pepper. You can squeeze out the paper towel into something if you really want but the tomato water should be too salty to drink if salted properly and you need the salt in there initially to get the moisture drawn out. It’s a small loss.
5. Immediately when the toaster pops up, grate the garlic lightly on the surface of the bread, the residual heat “cooking” the garlic ever so slightly. This is not garlic bread so use a light touch.
6. Spoon the oily seasoned tomato mixture on the bread liberally so it soaks into the bread but still retains some crunch and does not fall apart. Serve immediately while still slightly warm.
If you have basic pantry ingredients, and you freeze your sourdough bread, you can literally make this anytime you have a tomato on hand. It’s delicious enough to impress anyone for breakfast or dinner, and it amazes me every time I have it how delicious something so simple can be if you put a little love and care into it.
No, it's pa amb. (You and I just know it's Catalan bruschetta...)

Oatmeal with peanut butter and a chopped apple stirred into it. For true comfort food, I just want to replicate a fancy version of those instant oatmeal packets from childhood.
I always got triggered with ' instant oatmeal' because oatmeal is so frigging quick, what explains the costs of instant packages? Dried fruit and sugar ( or whatever you want. I sometimes like a few chunks marzipan and nothing else in my oatmeal) is not that hard to mix with your oatmeal...water or milk has to be added either way. Based on your portion size is just a few seconds in the microwave. Though I never tried the 'instant oatmeal' because really! I won't pay the same money for 1-3 instant portions versus the like fifteen or more servings you get out of a single oatmeal package
If you're triggered over instant oatmeal you must not have much to worry about in life. :)
Load More Replies...I made classic oatmeal porridge this morning, the way my dad used to make it: slowly cooked in milk, not microwaved. It’s tasty either way but this took me waaayyy back to happier times, and it still took less than 15 minutes! Oatmeal is the best, it really is.
That's the way we ate porridge before instant or quick oatmeal was developed. It makes me smile that today it's always "oatmeal" because it sounds more healthy than porridge. Like hummus which is pretty much mashed chickpeas but sounds posher when they're called garbanzo beans. Oatmeal is hip, chic, healthy but porridge is peasant food like gruel. Too much snobbery in the food realm sometimes. Gruel by the way got a bad name from Oliver Twist. Everybody ate gruel it was a staple food. It's simply a more watered down version of any kind of cereal made with water or milk. So, milky porridge, semolina, tapioca etc. And healthy. 😉

Rigatoni cooked al dente with grated Parmesan and black pepper. It's like a poor man’s cacio e pepe.
Besides using Parmesan instead of pecorino, this *is* cacio e pepe. And cacio e pepe did originate as poor man's food.
Only heard about cacio e pepe half a year ago and have made it a couple of times now - yummi!

i just just smell the bouillon in my grandmother's kitchen as a kid. brings me right back
I'd recommend Japanese curry. All you need is the packaged roux, meat, and/or veggies of your choosing, and rice. You could even skip the meat and veg and just make the curry and eat with rice. It's super simple, flexible, and delicious.

Comfort food = hot carbs for me so, most of those aren’t proper meals but they are awesome
This can be as simple or complicated as you like, but my easy comfort food is biscuits and gravy. You can do pre-made biscuits, and for the gravy, milk, flour, and breakfast sausage. The recipe can explode from here in terms of adding spices, or starting the gravy with a roux, or making your own biscuits.
i make my own biscuits with a roux-and-milk based gravy: Owen's hot sausage patty drippings, black pepper, a tiny shake of crushed red pepper, sage, pinch of rosemary, good amount of marjoram and savory. and a bit of salt. i grind the herbs with a mortar & pestle. Not simple by any means but i grew up on this. Every weekend. It was a family weekend thing. it was my brother's favorite meal, and i make it now when i miss him. Ultimate comfort food.
Scratch-made biscuits and gravy is a soul-soothing dish. And I'm a New Englander (although I was born South of the Mason Dixon).

It’s close because it’s basically 4 ingredients but feels fancy newer one to me - carbonara
Pasta, some pasta water, 5ish eggs, parmesean grated sorta finely, bacon I use half a pack of bacon cut it before cooking it
One pan cook the bacon and stir it a the pieces so they’re separated from each other. Leave in pan but move from heat so it doesn’t burn/stay hot
While bacon cooks boil water + grate like 6ish oz of parmesean.
Beat 5 eggs (4 just the yolk, 1 whole). Combine it with the parmesean u til you get something that sorta looks like yellow paste almost. (You can add seasonings here and pepper is great)
When pasta is done take some water in a mug and set aside
strain noodles & put back in the pan.
Add bacon / bacon fat to the noodles and stir it. Noodles should still be hot
Add egg mixture and stir, add water for a more sauce texture and you’re good to go. Eat immediately or you’ll want more water to keep it alive
Notes - I’ve never accidentally scrambled the eggs with the pasta doing it this way. You don’t want the bacon hot hot because it could scramble though so I try to have to some a few minutes before berthing else.
Does water count? Being Filipino, the 2 ingredients will always be rice out of the rice cooker, and a fried egg or two. The third would be anything preferably salty from the pantry or freezer: spam, spanish style sardines, corned beef (needs more work), tuna (needs some work), hotdogs, sausage, thick sliced ham, bacon… you get the idea. If I could add a 4th ingredient, it’d be some wasabi furikake.
Kielbasa, onion, cabbage. Fry ‘‘em up
Instant ramen noodles w eggs and cabbage and chili crisp So student but totally love it.
Naan flatbread. A slice of naan topped with Brie and some sort of spread, whether it's olive tapenade, marmalade, jam, or tomato sauce
Miso pasta. Grab a box of pasta, butter, and miso paste. Add some fresh Parmesan if you've got it.
Cheese and mushrooms on toast
Slice of Swiss cheese. Slice of pastrami. 1/4 avocado. Roll it up using the cheese as it’s wrap and eat it in 3 bites.
Breakfast quesadilla. All you need is a tortilla, shredded cheese, and an egg or two. Scramble the egg in a bowl, add a handful of cheese. Pop the tortilla onto a medium-hot pan, wait a couple of minutes, pour the egg mix onto the tortilla, and let it sit until the egg begins to settle. Carefully fold the tortilla in half to make a perfect quesadilla.
A PB&J sandwich, although it must be strawberry jelly for me. It's just not the same with grape.
I make PB&J with Liège syrup instead of jelly. (Well it is kind of like a jelly, made from apples, pears and dates.) We call it a poop sandwich though, both because of how it looks and how it uh… helps digestion.
Peanut butter and honey on a tortilla
It tastes delicious, but the picture looks like something you'd find after wiping a sick person's bootyhole.
I'm not counting salt & pepper in the ingredient totals.
Tomato sandwich (tomato, mayonnaise, bread)
Spaghetti aglio e olio (pasta, olive oil, garlic)
Scrambled eggs (eggs, cream or sour cream, butter)
Grilled cheese (bread, butter, cheese.) I usually use two types of cheese though so maybe a bit of a cheat.
Crispy smashed potatoes (potatoes, olive oil, thyme)
Roasted vegetables in general (vegetable, olive oil, maybe a dry spice)
Popcorn (popcorn kernels, ghee for popping, butter)
Baked naan with brie (storebought naan, brie, olive tapenade/marmelade/jam/tomato sauce/sliced pear)
Taking a cue from others, I'm not counting salt and pepper Caprese - Tomato, fresh mozarella, fresh basil and/or Italian dressing Grilled cheese - Bread, cheese, butter Chocolate dipped strawberries Spicy ramen - Instant ramen, egg, Sriracha Rice and beans with cheese Brown butter pasta - Pasta, butter, mizithra or parmesan cheese An omelette with cheese and fresh herbs Quesodilla with salsa or guacamole
Tortilla, shredded cheese, and an egg or two. Scramble the egg in a bowl, add a handful of cheese. Medium hot pan, put the tortilla flat in it. Wait a couple minutes, pour the egg mix onto the tortilla, let it rip long enough for the egg to start to set up, then carefully fold it in half in the pan and make a quesadilla out of it.
matzah ball soup
Fried tofu with scallions and oyster sauce.
Tuna pasta. Tuna, fusilli, sweetcorn and some mayo.
Buttery Vegemite toast.... when i no appetite in me... this.
The problem is that most newbies don’t know how to get the mix right to make it a better taste… Less is definitely more when starting out… Hot fresh toast with butter up to the edges that has soaked into it, then the smallest smear of Vegemite across all the area…. Then as you try it you can bump up the Vegemite until you find the sweat spot!
Load More Replies...A bowl of steaming hot brown rice, a slice of muenster cheese melted into it, a little too much sambol oelek.
-Bagels, cream cheese, and thinly sliced salmon -Canned Tuna mixed w/ Mayo (with salt n pepper) on bread. Sometimes I put some Hot Cheetos in there :) -white rice, sunny side eggs, and ketchup (or soy sauce) all mixed in a bowl
Japanese steamed egg custard (chawanmushi), you just need eggs and dashi stock (or any flavored broth). The ratio i like is 3 eggs to 375 mL of liquid. Mix, season, steam, and serve!
Cook pasta, after draining add an egg or two and return pot to low heat, mix, add cheese, mix more. Kind of a poor man's vegetarian carbonara.
Chip butty Beans on toast
My late wife, who was from Scotland, loved these, though when we first met, I (an American) was like "You want what?", but when she was just wanting a simple meal this is what I made her, also she loved grilled cheese on toast with Worcestershire sauce
Peanut butter toast with a sliced tomato. So good! Also I find a runny egg on rice with soy sauce and green onions if you have them is just so satisfying.
Canned chili over lettuce with salsa and/or sour cream. This makes a darn good taco salad. Bonus points if you eat it with tortilla chips or Fritos.
Chili mac...chili over spaghetti, garnish with grated cheddar and chopped onions.
Pasta and spray butter haha. It's an autism safe food for me.
Filipino. So rice and anything. Polish sausage. Bacon. Eggs (fried or scrambled). Bratwurst. Spam. Corn beef hash. Canned corn beef and sliced onions. Other than that? Torta: Cook up some ground beef in a skillet, while that’s going, scramble some eggs. When the beef is just about ready, pour the eggs in and let it set. Flip. Eat. With rice. You can add anything: onions, bell peppers, etc.
J. Kenji López-Alt's mac 'n' cheese. Easier than the boxed stuff, made with macaroni, evaporated milk, and shredded cheese.
I love the food posts on BP. I learn about new things to try and they are always delicious.
I was gonna say the same thing, it's one of my favorites they post.
Load More Replies...The art and foodie posts are why I love BP… The wannabe victim posts make me cringe.
If BP was just art, food, and animal posts I would be supremely happy.
Load More Replies...Scrambled eggs with cheese in. Generous amount of butter in the pan, browned well. Beat eggs, generous amount of fresh ground pepper & salt, and water (1tbsp per egg) in a bowl, pour into pan, turn heat down really low, add grated mild cheese, and either scramble, or allow to set as an omlette, depending on preference. The browned butter, fresh ground pepper and low cooking temperature are what make the dish.
Brown rice with some cream and cinnamon sugar. Haven't had it in forever, but my mom made it for me when I was younger.
When I've had a bad mental health day I toast a piece of sourdough bread, spread with proper butter and then put on mackerell fillets in tomato sauce heated up in the microwave. I figure that my brain needs the help and hopefully when I wake up the nest day I will feel like I can tackle whatever is going on.
bag of shredded cheese, just grab a wad and chomp! or tilt your head back and pour, whichever.
