You never know what tomorrow might bring. It might start like a perfectly ordinary day but then you go out for a hike and get lost in the wilderness. Or get back to your apartment building and take the elevator to your floor just for it to start falling.

Of course, it's very improbable that you'll end up in a similar situation. But if, God forbid, you do, internet personality Adorian Deck, aka The Facts Guy, wants you to be prepared. So he is working on an interesting video series where he shares information on how to identify and escape emergencies.

40 Life-Saving Tips You Might Not Have Known But Definitely Should When crying for help, try and call some specific people like "hey, you in the red shirt, help, I'm being mugged!" A lot of people will ignore a help call so if you call someone specifically they'll look at you. If people are really ignoring your help call you can just try and yell "fire!" because people are going to come running to see stuff burning.

In EMT school one of the first things they taught us was to point at a person directly and say something like "YOU! Call 911 NOW!" or "YOU, grab that backboard". Making eye contact and giving clear instructions to bystanders usually produces a better result.

If you yell MOMMY or DADDY, it may be more effective, using one word calls for help is always better. Hope nobody finds themselves in a situation like this

This is very sad but I actually have though about this. If I was in real trouble I would shout “help, my baby, please help my baby”. I’d scream it as loud as I could. I’m sorry everyone but If I need your attention right now I’m going to shout anything that will make you listen. I’m sorry that sounds callous and I’m sorry I’ve actually had to think what I’d shout if I needed help.

I live between a very rural home with practically no neighbors, no access to emergency services nor a medical center & a home smack-dab in the middle of a crowded, noisy city. If someone has a loud sneeze in the rural setting, all the closest neighbors are alarmed & react. If someone is screaming bloody murder in the city, the bystander effect kicks in hard, because it’s either a hooker or homeless person being dramatic and if it’s truly an emergency someone else will respond. It’s sad.

Clearly you've never taken a CPR/First Aid class ever. The first things they teach is make sure you're safe approaching the situation 2nd if there are others around point at someone specifically and say you, you go call 911. Then have them wait to show Cops/EMT/FD specifically where to go if its not totally obvious like if it isnt in the middle of the street blocking traffic. Have you ever seen a house or building or car fire people stop and stare. Just like car accidents.

Also in emergency (so not mugging or something like that but instead someone is hurt and needs help) if you know CPR or are otherwise needed to save someones live, dont yell someone call ambulance, people will think that oh someone else is going to call, specifically point at person and say you call ambulance to ensure someone is actually calling.

Bystander effect. Its kinda almost not intentional. Same reason if youre giving random people instructions during an emergency, you have them repeat what theyre going to do, or give verbal confirmation that they understood. Because a lot of the time people will just dazedly nod, or not respond to general orders. You dont go "someone call 911" you tell a specific person to do it, or everyone will think "someone else will do it" and no one will.

Have you read the Kitty Genovese story? You should. That's the most famous case of Bystander Effect. It was brutal. It was in Queens in the 60's. Pretty much all of her neighbors heard Kitty being stabbee and dying and did nothing. She didnt die immediately she continued screaming for someone to help no one did. It wasn't until she was just about to actually die one man came out of his apartment to help her but it was too late.

One time I was walking in a grassy area(no sidewalks) along a very busy street. Nonstop heavy traffic. There was a small hole that an animal dug that was the perfect size for my heel. I stepped in it and knew right away knew that I broke my ankle (sounds gross but I heard break even over the traffic). I was sitting on the ground waving my arm for help for I don't know how long before a guy pulled over and called 911 for me. This street has 10s of thousands of cars that use it every day and it still took that long for someone to pull over during rush hour.

Complete drivel! Most muggings happen very quickly and no matter what was shouted would get a sufficiently fast response, even allowing for clarity of mind to 'choose' what you shout! Also, muggers tend to operate with far fewer people around, so the idea of singling out a person and describing their attire is ludicrous.
