Let’s get a few things straight, right out of the gate. Pets are not supposed to be your status symbols. They’re not meant to be something you brag about only because of how much they cost you. They’re not something you should be haggling over online. And they’re not supposed to be excuses for owners to bully others because they don’t cater to their every demand.
Our fuzzy, furry, and feathered friends are living, breathing, thinking, and feeling beings who deserve our love, care, and respect. Some owners focus on the wrong things.
Unfortunately, the simple fact is that the world isn’t a perfect place and there are plenty of entitled pet owners who view the animals under their care from very bizarre perspectives. Some might complain about the price of a pet being way too high/low. Others are picky to the point of madness. And still, others demand that the entire world bend to them and their pets’ every desire. And then they get all angry when they don’t.
We’ve collected some of the most egregious examples of delusional and entitled pet owners from the r/ChoosingBeggars subreddit, to show you how not to behave. Scroll down, but remember to hold on to your hats, it’s going to be a wild ride. You might want to cuddle your dog or cat once you reach the bottom of the list. Oh, and before we forget, here's a gentle reminder: don’t shop—adopt!
Bored Panda wanted to understand just how big of a responsibility it is to own a pet, as well as what the signs of a good pet owner are, so we reached out to Ingrid Johnson, a certified cat behavior consultant and the founder of Fundamentally Feline. She told us that a good pet parent is someone who educates themselves about what's involved in caring for a pet before adoption. Read on for our full interview with Ingrid.

Old Lady Demands Free Therapy Dog
According to cat behavior consultant Ingrid, when pet parents educate themselves before getting an animal, they ensure that they have the right resources (from time and money to actual physical space) to meet the pet's physical and environmental needs.
"They are also going to seek the help of qualified professionals to ensure they are providing the best possible standards of care," she said that pet owners should seek out the help of vets, behaviorists, as well as trainers.
"Cats are not the low maintenance pets they have been touted to be, they require attention, training, grooming and, in my opinion, a high standard of care to ensure quality of life," the founder of Fundamentally Feline stressed the fact that having a cat isn't as easy as some people think.

Dogs Are Expensive - Even If Your Heart Is Full Of Love
The very same reason why IMHO rescue/shelter dogs/cats/whatever should not be without a donation fee. If you can't afford a donation fee of 100dollars (or another amount) for a dog, you have really should NOT be able to adopt at all.
You would be surprised to know how stingy people are. The organisation where I volunteer charges 80€ when you adopt a dog or cat. All animals are neutered, chipped, vaccinated and totally free of any kind of parasites. They give you all the documents and the passport. All for 80€! And even so, many people complain. Recently, an upper middle class idiot rejected the adoption of a lovely kitten because she "refused to pay any money for a street cat". The cat was lucky because she dodged a bullet, and so was I. I was sheltering her and I decided to adopt her. She's the sweetest little kitten in the world!
Load More Replies...This is actually not very bad. Many people do not realize how expensive dogs can be (even the small breeds) in the long run, the response is polite and (hopefully) eye-opening for the OP.
A lot of small dogs breeds have problems that require more vet visits or surgery. So they can easy be more expensive.
Load More Replies...The shelter I adopted my two cats from cost me $90 each. The cost included all up-to-date shots, spaying/neutering and micro-chipped. I think it was well worth the cost. If a person can't afford the adoption fee then how they going to be able to afford the upkeep, especially if it ends up with a chronic medical condition?
I'm betting most animals would rather be in a poor household where they are loved and maybe don't receive the best care instead of being killed by a shelter.
I agree, but the basic costs must be considered. It depends on what mean by "the best care". A dog doesn't need a fancy bed or gourmet food, but they do need to be fed, dewormed, vaccinated and the like. I've seen dogs returned to the shelter because they got sick and the owners didn't feel like taking them to the vet. I also know homeless people who own healthy and very well cared for dogs. The problem is not whether you are poor or rich, but whether you have considered carefully what having a dog implies, and whether you are ready to sacrifice some things (clothes, dinners in restaurants, etc) if necessary.
Load More Replies...This is why I don't have a dog. They are expensive! If you can't afford to adopt one you certainly can't afford the vet bills, food, treats, toys, etc.. So many people want a dog but have no finances to maintain having one. Then they wind up dumped at a shelter or even worse...mistreated and die or dumped on the side of the road..
If you can't afford a dog, vet bills and all or are unsure, don't get one. One way to help without needing money, is volunteering at a shelter. They sometimes don't have enough staff to socialize with the animals, so ask around if you can come over to play with the puppers and get them used to people.
Btw I know this is about a dog but the quote (by a friend) said cat so that's why it says cat :)
Load More Replies...Most shelters I have worked with vaccinate and spay or neuter before placing a pet with any new owner. Those services cost money. If you can't contribute, why should you believe you can afford that pet?
When I adopted my dog he was not neutered. The shelter gave me a voucher to pay for 60% of his neuter bill. I was blessed.
When I did adoptions I had one girl who was upset about the donation amount. I ran into her a few weeks later and she bragged about a free kitten she got. I told her that with adoptions from our shelter it included shots, deworming and a certificate for a vet visit and a reduction if they chose to use our vet to do the neutering. Her face fell as I went on and I finished with "just how free was this kitten?"
My cat's adoption fee was $100 and it included up to date vaccination, deworming, neutering, microchip, and fixing his broken tooth. Best $100 ever spent. And they even gave me a bag of litter, a box of wet food, his favorite toy and blankets.

As a trainer and groomer, Pugs are known for MANY complications since their brachiocephalic. She should def not be looking for a Pug if she can't afford an adoption fee! Maybe get a goldfish or a pet rock to start off with.
As someone who just spent 4k to fix her dogs teeth and heart, it's not cheap.
First off the breed she is wanting is expensive if purebred. Also Pugs are prone to health problems due to not being able to breathe well being they are bred to have a short tiny snout. There is also heartworm preventions and puppy boosters which is a multi-shot series (an appointment every 3 weeks) And final, the age range they want they will need to pay for a spay/neuter shortly after they adopt. Our clinic (I work at a vet) recommends spay/neutering at 6 months old. This person is delusional. Best to get them a pug beanie baby.
Pet health insurance. The one my grandparents have for their 4 cats covers flea meds, most vet visits, all medications. Seriously lowered the cost of taking care of their pets. 1 cat is 20 a month (they are still young, under 5). Only caveat is you have a 250 deductible for the month you pay first. So if they need surgery, all you pay is the 250. Anything after that for the rest of the month is 100% covered
The yearly veterinarian bill for my two dogs' wellness exams, tests, and medications (flea, tick, heart worm) runs about 1200usd. Oh, and licensing is another 50usd per year. High quality dog food for two medium-sized dogs runs about 1300usd per year. If you can't afford a modest fee to a shelter, you can't afford a dog.
I bought my dog from a shelter for $25. Turned out he was a heavily trained guard dog. A dog trained as well as him would normally cost 100s. He is amazing with kids and super sweet as well. He appears to be trained to protect children. He is also trained in drug detection. Don't know how he ended up at the shelter, but man is he a blessing to the family.
I bought a kitten six months ago, to be my friend, to be loved, to keep me company. He seemed to be healthy and happy baby boy. He wasn't cheap, but i knew he'll be worth it. Well, he wasn't perfectly healthy, and we went to see a vet. And then again, and again, and again. Now he's better. Original "price" have at least triplet from the beginning. He is still worth it all. There's No free pets.
Do not agree. Why should I pay 100 USD for a dog? Or for a cat? Vet costs me about 12gbp per month, insurance about the same and food and litter are not that expensive. I agree to pay the fee for neutering, but not more.
We also spoke to Ingrid about empathy towards animals and what some people can do to increase it while also changing their perspectives on pets. The cat behavior consultant explained to Bored Panda that she'd tell someone who might treat pets as commodities to visit their local animal control.
"Not even a rescue group, but a regular, municipal shelter. If more people submerged themselves into the darker side of the animal rescue world, fewer people would want to buy the fancy purebred and hopefully opt to adopt and save someone on death row," she said.
"They will also learn that shelters and rescue groups are stocked with fancy purebreds that have been given up on for a variety of reasons. The only way to break the cycle is education. In my opinion, we should not continue to breed animals the way we have been (and making new, 'hybrid' breeds) when there are hundreds of thousands dying in shelters every year! Rescue one until there are none! Don't shop, adopt!" Ingrid urged anyone who's thinking of getting a pet to visit their local shelter.

There’s a lot that goes into caring for our animal buddies. We have to provide them with healthy food, water, a place to live, and ways to help keep them entertained. That’s on top of giving them enough snuggles to make all the other pets in the neighborhood jealous.
Some entitled owners might be focusing on the wrong things and completely ignoring what it is that their pet buddies actually need.
One of the worst things that any owner can allow to happen to their pet is letting it become overweight. Obesity leads to a lot of health problems in our animal companions. For example, obese dogs have an increased risk of developing diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and hypertension.
What’s more, their joints wear out faster and they can develop urinary bladder stones. Their quality of life suffers immensely. That’s why it’s vital that their owners do everything in their power to provide them with a healthy diet and sufficient opportunities for movement.

“Dogs suffering from obesity have a much greater risk of developing arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. Studies also show that dogs with obesity live about 2.5 years less than those at a healthy weight,” he told us.

“More recent research proves that overweight or dogs with obesity have a lower quality of life, as reported by their pet parents. To put it bluntly, the fact is that dogs with obesity aren't able to live and enjoy their best lives, and we must do better,” he warned.
“When people ask me if it's better for a dog or cat to have obesity, I tell them ‘neither.’ Obesity is a disease and, as a veterinarian, I swore an oath to prevent animal disease and suffering. My goal is to prevent pet obesity and I've spent the last twenty years researching and teaching nutrition and weight loss methods to committed veterinary professionals and concerned pet parents.”

Dr. Ward explained to us the similarities and differences between dogs, cats, and humans when it comes to obesity. He noted that dogs and humans are similar when it comes to losing weight and moving towards a healthier lifestyle. Both are omnivores, both use similar metabolic energy sources, and both get a lot of benefit from aerobic activities like walking.
“For dogs and humans, the weight-loss equation is about 60% to 70% diet and 30% to 40% physical activity. For cats, a species with different physiology and metabolism, it's about 90% diet and only 10% exercise,” he said.

“The first step toward a healthier weight for your dog is to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. They will first determine your dog's Body Condition Score (BCS), establish target weight loss goals and ideal weight, and calculate the number of calories you should feed each day,” the pet health specialist said that some dogs will need special therapeutic diets while other canines might only need to reduce the number of calories they eat each day.

“Your veterinarian will also make sure there isn't an underlying medical condition or disease causing the weight gain and that it's safe to begin an exercise program. In general terms, a dog (and their pet parent) needs about 30 minutes of aerobic activity each day,” he said that walking is a great form of exercise because it’s efficient and easily accessible.

“I prefer it [walking] to most other exercises because that's what dogs were designed to do best and most naturally. Plus, it's free! When walking, be sure to use a walking harness and not a neck or choke collar to prevent injury to the trachea or windpipe region of the throat and neck,” he told Bored Panda.

And then there’ll be a cat, three guinea pigs, two hamsters, a goldfish and a cockatoo called Elvis who all come down with increasingly awful ailments.
“Younger and more active dogs may lose a little more, depending on the amount of exercise the pet parent can provide. The most important thing to do is to monitor the weight each month. If your dog isn't losing the appropriate amount of weight in three months, you need to change the strategy,” Dr. Ward said.

Load More Replies...I always wonder, what are these people going to do, if their pet gets ill? They cannot afford buying the actual animal but surely will take care of it when it gets sick? Seriously? I "only" have guinea pigs (from a shelter, some of them for free because of special needs), lots of experience and can handle some illnesses without consulting a vet, but even I have to see a vet for bigger problems. Since December it was an extra of 150-200 Euros, every month. I don't want to know what the vet may charge for a sick dog - oh wait, I do. Last time it was a few thousand Euro for an emergency surgery they performed on a dog, as I overheard waiting for my bill. So how can someone afford a surgery like that when 600 Dollars are too much for the animal? I think being responsible for an animal starts with thinking about how to cover non-calculated costs like vet bills. If you can't, then love is not enough.
Indeed. I unexpectedly paid almost $6,200 usd last week in vet bills for one "healthy" beagle. It happens with animals. No animal is guaranteed perfect health for life, it's no different with a pet than it is with a human. You take them to the Dr. You even get dental exams. I adopted a doberdane puppy earlier this year. Adoption fee was $700. A drop in the bucket compared to what she'll cost in the long run. Before these two, we exclusively adopted old, sick, or abused/needing rehab animals, simply because we know what happens when they get an unprepared home (or no home), and we wanted them to have a better life. We've dealt with autoimmune diseases, thyroid disease, diabetes, stomach cancer, bone disease, eye cancer, etc. Yeah, it adds up. If you aren't willing to pay for a checkup or to spay / neuter, you won't be able to pay when they have a big issue and just like with people, it can happen. If these types truly loved animals, they would never put them in these situations.
Load More Replies...I think that most af these people should never be allowed pets of any description. The laws are too lax. I'm in U.K. but I'm sure it's a worldwide problem that pets are are of little to no value as regards to their life quality and treatment. It should be really really difficult to acquire a pet where you must prove both competency and financial abilty to get one.
Okay, first, I hate the fact, that there are so many people who want a pet, but do not want the responsibility or to pay anything for it. Second, this will be an unpopular opinion, but I'll stand by it anyway: a pet is not entitled to veterinarian care, as long as there is a single human being, who is denied medical care for monetary reasons. It's fine to have a pet, even if you can't afford the vet. BUT you do not have a right to a pet if you are not willing to suffer in any way for it. If you can't afford enough food, go hungry with your pet, but don't let it f-ing starve. If you don't love your pet as unconditionally as it loves you, don't get one, period. There are so many homeless people who care lovingly for their dogs and will share every last bit of food with them, and if they can manage so can you.
i can't express how infuriated these kind of people make me! owning a dog or any other kind of animal is a responsibility. just like having children, you need to be able to provide for their every need. i remember when in the midst of the pandemic lockdowns many shelters were so happy that they had empty kennels. but, at the time i was concerned about when people had to go back to work - what will happen with those animals. i know that there has been a slight increase in shelters but it doesn't look like it was jump due to people getting rid of their "temporary" companions. i see these kinds of posts all the time and as elitist snobby grammar nazi as it sounds, if you can't cuss me out with at least correctly spelled profanity then i am sure that you won't be able to put the effort into learning how a specific breed/type of animal needs. yeah, yeah, yeah...i sound like a b*tch and when it comes to this issue...i most definitely am.
