This time, we take a look into the cases when parents get desperate for things and try to use their kids to gain things free of charge or with a hefty discount. Whether we like it or not, our parents plant mental and emotional seeds in us. These seeds grow as we do. In some families, they are seeds of love, respect and independence. In other families, it’s fear, guilt, obligation and toxic mentality.
So while it may be hard to wrap your head around why exactly some parents use their kids to get special treatment, this often happens with controlling parents. Controlling parents tend to be anxious, paranoid and possessive. They like taking things into their hands and knowing what’s best for their kids. Sometimes that means they don’t allow their kids to nurture their personalities and forbid them from taking interest in things, like playing guitar or joining a soccer team at school.

Oh, I know the answer to this one: it's because the second we do something for your kid, it becomes a role that we must endure forever. We actually start to hate you and your kid, because you take and take and give nothing back. We have to change the way we live our lives to include your kid and it takes a toll. There is no way out of it once we start, and in the end, it destroys our friendship. So, your neighbor is keeping the lines straight, because she's already learned this. Raise your own damn kid, she owes you nothing, and you don't get any participation in deciding what inconveniences her.
How about she asks the next-door neighbour if she can do this, instead of waiting for her to make the offer. After all, she's the one wanting help. What's wrong with asking?

Um no. Yes, I've watched kids for free being a stay at home mom. This is next level tho. This would make the neighbor responsible for her kids constantly. No matter if kids are sick, appointments, or whatever. Then how about when working mom takes her sweet time getting home? "Oh I'll just stop and relax here and then go home" she'll get groceries kid free too, while sahm has a kid all the time. I just see so many problems with this.
Also "putting the kid on the bus" (which takes 2min) is VERY different than watching them for 45min beforehand every day!
Her complaint is BS, yes. But, I do wonder if, when I was little, if my parents paid our neighbors to watch me. I doubt it. But, lots of things are different now. Starting when I was 7-8yo, (‘60s), I stayed alone if I came home after school or if my folks went out for the evening. Our neighbor might check to see that I made it home & I knew to call or go there if I had a problem, but it was up to me to get my homework done &/or get my butt into bed on time. (Or, at least to pay enough attention to get the tv turned off or my book stashed and pretend to be asleep by the time they got inside. If I cut it too close, I could always turn the tv on and pretend to have gone to sleep in front of it.😄)
That neighbor/friend already knows what will happen if she volunteers, even once without being asked, to help this woman out.

Yeah ... I know some people like this out-of-the-house-working mom ... I work from home and live close to the school my kids go to. Some parents expect me to be readily available to drop their kids off at the same sports practice my kids goes to, just because I work from home. Uhmmmm ... no, we can make a deal, but YOU also take time off work to drop 'em off, just like I do!

Our first year in our apartment we didn't know that there'd be no trick or treaters. Bought tons of candy. We were sad. The next morning we put out a little table with a bowl of candy and a sign inviting our neighbors to have some. My husband worked at 4am and up at 2:30am, we went to bed at 8pm. About 11pm that night we get woken up by someone pounding on the door. I open the door and it's our upstairs neighbor. Apparently we'd run out of candy and she needed us to fill the bowl straight away. I could've killed her. I said no, we were sleeping and shut the door in her face, went back to bed. When my husband opens the door to head out for work he calls me to come see. She took the table and bowl and left us a note. Since we didn't have candy she took what she was "owed". Alrighty then.
How sad. ..I guess for some. Halloween brings out the demons.

The people expecting me to give their kid the first foul ball I caught after going to MLB games for more than 4 decades also subscribed to this idea.

This sounds bad but I don't have sympathy for the single mom card. My mother was a single mom for literally 12 years with almost no real support. She never pulled that card. She showed up for her kids and worked her a** off for her kids.
I'm thinking there are folks out there that give in to these nasty, pushy people. And it pains me.
This is exactly why I rarely help anyone. There are more of these people in the world than anyone can imagine. Ungrateful, entitled people who think others owe them. I was told by someone that because I have a job and can make more money, that I should give them my entire paycheck so they could have some money. I told them to visit the company's website, as we were hiring for many positions. They said they didn't want a job, they just wanted money and that I needed to give them my paycheck. When I told them no, they called me a selfish a$$ hole. I promptly threw them out of my house.
I gave away an electric lawnmower for free a couple of weeks ago. Someone actually texted me and said, "I'll take the free lawnmower, but you'll have to deliver it because I don't have a car." He lived 40 miles away. It's so deflating when you're trying to help out a deserving person by giving away something you could just as easily charge for.
