The pandemic is not only affecting global public health but also causing chaos for the economy, disrupting supply chains and causing labor shortages for businesses around the world.

Economists say that not only changing demographics like aging and retiring employees are a factor behind the shortages, but also border controls, immigration limits, and demands for better pay and flexible working arrangements.

The latest labor data from the United States, for example, shows that the number of people who are willing to walk away from their jobs or to switch employment is growing. A U.S. Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, released in October, showed there were 10.4 million job openings in August whereas the number of people leaving their jobs (the so-called "quits rate") rose to 4.3 million, the highest level seen on records dating back to December 2000. And it's showing.

On Monday, a Chipotle location in Kentucky was forced to temporarily close its doors after half of its staff walked out on the job

A video showing the simple sign the employees left went viral on TikTok in the hours following the mass resignation, and local Kentucky reporter Doug Proffitt also posted a picture of it on his Facebook, adding a statement from Chipotle itself.

The location's general manager, Raven Whallen, provided this explanation when reached by the Louisville Eccentric Observer: a series of unexpected staff resignations forced the Chipotle location to temporarily close its doors on Monday, but that didn't prevent it from reopening Tuesday morning. Apparently, the restaurant lost three employees on Monday. One had already put in her two-week notice but decided to leave her position early. Another was too frightened to return to work after discovering that her car's catalytic converter was stolen and her tires slit. A manager also left their position, leaving the store acutely understaffed.

But Chipotle, like many restaurants and fast-food locations across the US, has been struggling to maintain its employee count. The ongoing pandemic, paired with difficult customers, unsympathetic corporate management, and low pay, make these positions difficult to sell, even for the industry's typically young workers. As noted by Whallen, "A lot of people don't want to work nights, and if they do, they’re underage. So, it's kind of hard because they all have to be off at a certain time. We have to follow the labor laws."

In a similar case, one Dunkin' Donuts worker put his pay stub on blast, saying he doesn’t get paid enough for the misery he goes through

TikToker @scorchedearthcorey blasted Dunkin' Donuts for not compensating their employees enough. "I just want you to look at this because, for some reason, some people think that other people are there to entertain them," he said in his viral clip."This is my main source of income, to pay child support ... Do you think with my 73 hours of f****** misery and bulls***, that you should come and try to bother me more? People think customer service is end-all-be-all. Let me explain something to you: I do not get paid enough to listen to you. I do not get paid enough to take your B.S. I do not get paid enough for you to treat me like I'm your entertainment."

People think the ordeal at the Kentucky Chipotle is a sign of a larger problem

And they're right, similar signs have been popping up all over the United States

Most of our employees have walked out because the customers were awful during the height of the pandemic, and are far worse now. People need to go back to kindergarten and learn to behave. Simple as that.

Do not eat at Chipotle. I ate at my local Chipotle once for the first time ever -- and got a mouthful of sharp chicken bones. They gave me a certificate for a free meal. I came back, got another mouthful of chicken bones. Got another certificate. This went on 3 more times before I just decided it just wasn't worth the free food I was able to swallow. I have never seen any other food service place be so incompetent in my life. I literally can't figure out how they manage to be so bad at the one thing they're supposed to be doing.

Yes, there has been delays in supplies and food from freakin' CHINA! It's the US fault through GREED, that we have depended on CHINA. We are more than capable of producing what we need right here in AMERICA! The US has OUTSOURCED everything. Taken good paying jobs away because "YOU" America said it was cheaper to outsource labor, not thinking about how it would eventually HURT your own American People. Freakin' Greed ! Why do most Meats come from across the pond, when we had mega meat processing plants in AMERICA? I am from Nebraska and when I was growing up in the 60s & 70's it was prosperous. My grandfather retired from Cudahy (a meat packing plant) I was surrounded by these companies in my town. Armour, Wilsons, Swift, Farmland and others. It was their livihood. The pay was great then. Affording families to buy homes, decent cars, maybe a boat and a camper like my grandfather had. Take family vacations and have great neighborhood barbecues. What happen AMERICA? YOU GOT GREEDY!

It's time to start respecting your employees, instead of thinking of them as a number or non- human. In the old days, employees were referred to as " Assist" to the company. I am glad to see large companies having to close because employees are tired of being overwhelmed

Dunkin donuts is his career? 12 bucks an hour to make and/or serve donuts is pretty good. Maybe set your goals a bit higher. That is an after school job or get you through college, not s damn career nor one where you go to fund your child support payments. No sympathy here.

Here's a thought: if you're working full-time putting up with customer shenanigans and trashing your body standing up for 40 hours, you deserve to make enough to live on. "College level" should be more than that. You shouldn't have to get a college degree to avoid living in a tent under a bridge.

Preferably you reduce labor costs to zero (slavery, indentured servitude) then you continue to enslave the labor force by indebtng them. They cannot afford the goods they need so they go into debt, further reducing their negotiating power. These market forces are already in place here in the USA through education and medical indebtedness. The US has some of the highest personal debt in the world...well and China. Both countries have surprisingly terrible benefits pto etc. But hey I cough "we" are so rich!

In my early twenties I worked for Dollar General as a shift supervisor, was supposed to transition into assistant manager (the one they had was to be fired). First day on the job training my manager had a heart attack. I ended up being trained by the very not properly trained assistant manager .... Long story short, the manager was on salary but worked at least 60 hours a week before the heart attack, we never got another manager until about 6 months later. This store was ran by completely incompetent people, including myself. By the time corporate caught on, I was the only honest one with them, and they kept me "in the loop." I was promised new training, I had put in 6 months of management work, and was promised a pay raise and promotion. They came in one day and did a mass firing, including me, who had been loyal to their plan and getting new people working for the store. This is the absolute worst company I've ever worked for, and was the end of my retail working experience. The manager ended up not coming back.

But notice the common thread: "Nobody wants to work anymore." Sounds conspiratorial. First the little mom and pop. Then the 4 star restaurants. Next the fast food and dollar stores. All driving traffic to Amazon, which means "sit at home and order and we'll bring you what we have": soggy grapes, stale bread, old meat, cold fast food, or, how about somebody else's order. If the fast food chains can take their stores down to just online ordering, they can cut the overhead and increase profits as a result. We're being taken somewhere. Instead of taking it out on each other, we probably should wake up and smell the era changing.

I think it great that so many are willing to quit. Demanding a living wage, 'or else', is the only way we going to steer our economy out of the plutocratic rut we've been hobbled by. If companies refuse to even approach a reasonable salary, and I mean this in the most non violent sense, LET THEM BURN!

No, they want to be paid their full net worth. Not the corporations idea of net worth. You mean you cannot afford to lose 100,000.00 dollars a year ? Come on, you spend that on donations every year. How about donating full net worth to the people that made you who you are?

Service Jobs are not to raise a family on, these jobs are meant for College kids or retirees looking for a few extra $$. If your raising a family on these jobs, you have to find a way to go back to school or trade school. Americans pull themselves by their bootstraps and don't opt of a handout or taking from others, rich or not.

Most people who are working jobs at minimum wage probably have to work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet. It's not kids working to make fun money anymore, it's people who are trying to support themselves and their families. Kids will put up with some of this cr*p because they aren't there that many hours, but working 8+, it becomes way too much.

Food service is having issues because even with government bailouts they recieve its so negative at the popular nation wide pizza franchise are all dripping with hostility, starting with the management. I'm suffering from two recently diagnosed heart conditions with full documentation with restrictions and as soon as the manager found a reason. My car broke down while delivering for him. I missed one day to come up with the resources to fix this issue. And then I get a writeup. I worked all through covid and I'm not asking for a handout but if I have to go to the hospital via ambulance 3 times in three months have documentation while working as much as possible then then I'm written up because after asking everyone for help covering a 5 hour shift. I still work there and it's so negative how people are just loosing it.

National minimum wage in the UK is £8.91 ($12.05) an hour. Taxes are only paid when you earn at least £12,570 a year. Our tax and national insurance is taken directly from our wages and the NI pays for our healthcare. I wouldn't move to the states for all the money in the world (I'm epileptic so would probably have to spend it all on medication within the first 12 months anyway).

I made a s**t ton of money as a server, then even more as a bartender. I understand people not from the US don't understand tips and such. There were bad days when I walked out from a 6 to 8 hour shift with $200. There were average days when that was $300-400. Then there were some saturday nights bartending where I had $800-1000 (which I put in the restaurant safe and got it in the morning, or had the manager deposit it for me since I had the same bank as the restaurant). So no, they didn't get paid $21.50 for a 10 hr day. When I retire from what I do now, I'm gonna part time bartend again.

'Sounds like you were at a well attended restaurant/bar. I worked at a couple dives that sometimes would have nights without customers. I'd walk home from a six hour shift with $15. Your personal experience doesn't mean the industry doesn't need to do better for its employees overall.

So what they are saying is that even $4500 (or less) isn't crap for money, it is just enough for people to choose that over the lousy pay and poor working hours that the business offers? And for some reason they think that people will sympathize with their plight? This shows the disconnect between business and people.

Walgreens saves money by scheduling employees for 36 hours a week, so they aren't full-time, so they don't have to pay the benefits. No. Health. Insurance. For people who work at a pharmacy and retail shop. Also, raises for long-term employees do not match starting pay for new employees. After 16 years, I was making the same hourly rate as a brand new hire. Thank God I found contracted work using my Master's degree.

But notice the common thread: "Nobody wants to work anymore." Sounds conspiratorial. First the little mom and pop. Then the 4 star restaurants. Next the fast food and dollar stores. All driving traffic to Amazon, which means "sit at home and order and we'll bring you what we have": soggy grapes, stale bread, old meat, cold fast food, or, how about somebody else's order." If the fast food chains can take their stores down to just online ordering, they can cut the overhead and increase profits as a result. We're being taken somewhere. Instead of taking it out on each other, we probably should wake up and smell the era changing.

It depends on where this is. Rent for a 1 bedroom apartment where I live is about $1,500 ($18k a year), not including water, gas or electricity. So that’s already half your pay...and the $40k is pre-taxes, so really more than half your pay.

40k a year? For "hard work and long hours" in a "hot kitchen" and somehow they still don't understand why nobody wants to work for them!

"No one wants to work anymore" for long hours, hot kitchens and "hard work". I bet that the person who wrote this has ever done any of those things. Most likely, they stood around yelling at people to work faster, this job isn't hard people, and I could replace you in a second!

And their clueless, it's not that people don't want to work it's that people want to make a decent wage to support their families and not have to put up with bullshit from their managers/ owners m They need to get off their power trips and get in there and be a working manager, don't ask people to do things you wouldn't do self, it's all about respecting people. When you go to a job and your manager is yelling at their employees all the time and make the workplace miserable, who wants to work for them? People don't deserve that kind of abuse from anyone. It's incredible how many managers have no clue what you are doing or how to do it, but their your manager and supposed to teach you, not the opposite

Honestly, even $12.60, which is what I make, isn't that much. If it wasn't for my husband's disability check, we wouldn't be able to cover all our bills. I know I make more than many people might. But a lot of the time, it still doesn't feel worth what I have to put up with...

My RiteAid pharmacy shortened hours from 9-9 to 10-6. They are so backed up that the other stores in town have been helping them get caught up. Yet they continue to double book the pharmacist with flu & COVID shots. One of my meds I had to wait 2 weeks for. Luckily it wasn't one I had withdrawals from. My doctor suggested I switch to mail order. I did but there's one I'll still have to go there for. They have an automated phone system. Once they push done in the computer it calls you. I know this because I've sat and waited before. THEY DON'T OFFER HEALTH INSURANCE TO THEIR PHARMACY TECHS! How is that possible when they make billions and billions on medications alone.

I work in a hospital pharmacy and we are at the point that we are offering $2500 sign on bonuses for new techs. I don't know what the starting pay is but I hope it is at least $15/hr because Walgreens is offering at least that with a $1250 sign on bonus. We're massively short on technicians and I think the only reason it isn't worse is that the main retail corporations are treating their techs far worse.

Pay hasn't risen with costs. Time to pay the piper, Repubs. I still remember Papa John screaming about he'd have to raise prices to give workers obamacare-----because you want sick employees handling food. Turned out it was cents on the dollar. Worth every damned penny.

The CVS in my area is overflowing with customers. I wanted to get my son's flu shot and we left twice because not only was the line long (around 15 people with their hands on their hips and visibly frustrated) but the line wasn' t moving. On the 3rd attempt, we got the shot. The area where you sit to get the shot was filled with boxes of supplies. There were 4 employees behind the counter and it wasn't enough to handle the crowd. The phone was ringing non-stop and no one answered. God help them if even 1 employee quits.

The corporations want the regular staff to do flu and covid vaccines while still dealing with their regular workload, that they are likely already understaffed for.

Im a cashier at rite aid and for the last two days I've been stuck telling dozens of people that call that the pharmacy is currently not answering any phone calls.. Thankfully so far everyone has understood that it's not my fault and i cant do anything about it.. They also just took an hour off the pharmacy hours and moved all vaccines to a one hour window a day

Not due to the government handouts, due to the fact that people figured out how to make money from home by starting their own business. It doesn't take a lot of start up money to get one going, it just takes time that no one had until they were forced to stay home. I worked as a tutor before the pandemic. I managed to be in my last semester before everything closed down, finished my degree online and got a job working remotely for an accounting firm. Then the manager that let me go from tutoring because she had to reduce numbers suddenly calls me to ask if I can return. Nope...found a better job at twice the pay.

What’s happening resembles a restaurant workers union strike. It happening spontaneously without organization as people realize how screwed over they’ve been. My daughter worked for Sonic one summer. If I knew then. What I know now I would have started a lawsuit for wage theft. Basically you are told to show up to work a shift and then when there is a lull — ratio of customers to employees goes down— you are told to clock out! Think about it. Bean counting taken to an outrageous level of inhumanity for the sake of stockholders.

That sign is Laminated! They spent money on The Sign knowing it was gonna be there for a while. If only they thought Gee? This employee is really good! Think I'd like to keep them happy so they stick around! Nope! Gotta go to my office and spend an hour making a sign while everyone else does the work...Hmm? Is it legal to laminate employees?
