Comedian Ron White once famously called his show You Can't Fix Stupid. The statement is debatable, because in theory, education is supposed to do that, but it's a completely different story when it boils down to practice. And so there is always work to be done when pushing away the tide of ignorance.

But until then, Redditors embrace the reality by asking questions and sharing experiences. Specifically, this time around, someone on Reddit asked people to share the dumbest myths people today still believe, and the r/AskReddit community was quick to deliver.

40 Myths People Think Are True, Yet They Are in Reality Very, Very False, As Shared In This Online Thread When I had cancer a few years back and was doing chemotherapy I had people who constantly questioned that I actually "had cancer" due to the fact that my hair didn't fall out until I was actually in remission (Had been off chemo for about 2-3 weeks when my hair started gradually thinning and falling out). It's a complete myth that every single person's hair will have the same reaction to chemo. Some people lose hair right away, some don't. Everybody is different.

There was a letter on ask a manager of a woman who threw their padding at a colleague after a mastectomy when those nasty potstirrers claimed she couldn't have cancer because she didn't look sick enough. It's ridiculous how cruel some people can be if you don't fit in their expectations.

The whole alpha beta male hypothesis was based on wolves in captivity Wolves who were not related to each other so which it was more like doing a psychological study on people in prison and then telling the world that applies to every human being every single Wolfpack is a family the “alphas” are the parents. heck the guy who even did a study tried to tell the world that it was wrong but of course nobody listened

Incels have now come up with Sigmas. Alphas that are SO Alpha, they don't even know they are Alpha. A couple of reporters have done deep dives into incel mythology, and lore...it is, apparently THE most homoerotic verbiage you could ever want to read. It makes Tom of Finland look like the tamest, most vanilla Enid Blyton Summer fantasy. Paragraph, after paragraph, page, after page extolling the huge magnificence of Alpha/Sigma c*cks. But, you know, not in, "a gay way". They just need all that exposition, and detail to tell you how wonderful those c*cks are. Again, in no way a gay, homosexual way. No, totally, totally straight. They just need entire forums to describe them, in painstaking detail. Still a better love story than, Twilight.

This entire thing makes me laugh because I read a lot of fanfic, and in some fandoms there's this thing called 'Alpha/Omega' which is almost entirely gay fics about guys getting other guys pregnant, and how they go into heat like dogs. It's really just an excuse to get 2 guys to have crazy neverending sex in a story. But every time I hear some guy talking about how he's an alpha, I immediately think 'oh he's trying to get another guy pregnant'.

It's based on social animals behavior. Or, more correctly, it's based on the misunderstanding of some absolute moron had of animal behavior. It is entirely irrelevant for humans, since human breeding and social systems are very different than those of mammals with social hierarchies. Oh, and, in baboons, the ones with the best lifetime reproductive success are the Gammas - high status enough that others won't initiate fights with them, but, unlike the bets, they are not constantly challenging the Alpha. The constant conflict between the Alphas and the Betas decreases the life expectancies of all of these. So a Gamma may not breed as many times as an Alpha or a Beta in any given year, but will live far longer than either Alphas or Betas.

One thing is definitely for sure, if you have to tell people that you are an alpha, either in words or by showing some kind of stupid superficial behaviour, then your are not an alpha, (or at least not what you have chosen to call "an alpha"). All this alpha-beta-c**p is invented by men who does not have enough selfesteem to go on on their own, and hence they have to "sell" their personality through some some sort of "advetising", that is often used as cover up for some really crappy behaviour.

The one who came up with this, has spent years trying to "wash away" this stupid notion. It is only valid for wolves in captivity. So, if someone says he's an "alpha male" assume he's in prison. Or, as in IT; that he's a newbie who can't function well, yet.

Oh and there’s another one too, they’re Called Lone Wolf Males. See here: The archetypal sigma male is defined above all else by his tendency to forsake the traditional social dominance hierarchies of modern society. These men walk a more solitary path. They're sometimes called 'lone wolves' or 'wanderers. They are content to be alone and don't seek the approval or validation of others. They are self-sufficient and capable of taking care of themselves without the assistance of others. Sigma males prioritize their needs and desires in their relationships and don't let others dictate their decisions. aka A$$holes.

This ocme sout of a very mistaken idea of how animals work. Social interactions in wild animals are much more complex, and so are ones in humans, although I really do think wolf packs are more sensible about it all, and far more caring.

40 Myths People Think Are True, Yet They Are in Reality Very, Very False, As Shared In This Online Thread There are dumber ones out there, but the one I, as an estate lawyer, deal with constantly is the idea that there needs to be a "reading" of the will, where the family all gather and the lawyer reads it aloud to them for the first time. We don't do that, we just mail everyone their own copy if they want it. It's a really stubbornly persistent one because people continue to see scenes of it in movies and TV shows, where it's used for some big dramatic reveal. I've even had irate beneficiaries insist that the administration of the estate can't be "official" until there's a reading. Way, *way* back, like 150 years ago or so, I believe we used to do something like that at times because you couldn't exactly presume literacy on the part of the beneficiaries, but now we feel it's a pretty safe bet that you can either read it or find someone who can.

40 Myths People Think Are True, Yet They Are in Reality Very, Very False, As Shared In This Online Thread Had a cab driver insisting that the reactor meltdown at Fukushima was a failed Chinese attack on the US. The plan was to superheat the rods so they'd burn into the ground, through the center of the Earth, and come out in America and irradiate it. Amazing.

40 Myths People Think Are True, Yet They Are in Reality Very, Very False, As Shared In This Online Thread It is believed in Indian culture that keeping your unibrow means “good luck” I kept my unibrow for 20 years thinking it is my “good luck” until I got stage 5th of kidney failure and I did my eyebrows after that because who gives a f**k about luck anymore. Now my eyebrows look cute af.

Okay this is partially true. If the gum stayed in your system, it would take 7 years for it to be digested into the body. However, it just stays in it's gummy form and follows the rest of the waste out the back door.

That you can target fat loss in specific areas of the body by doing certain exercises (like doing sit-ups to lose belly fat)

This one includes an extra myth - that you can’t tone a fatty area. You cannot target fat loss, but you CAN build muscle and tighten muscle. As the muscle grows, there’s more surface area for the fat and that in turn can give the illusion of fat loss. For the example of crunches - if your core is weak, then strengthening can give an improved appearance by: tightening internal corset and promoting better posture. However, true abs are made in the kitchen in conjunction with an appropriate training plan.

Unless you are on some form of benefits and the raise makes you cross the threshold of income. Making £100 per week, plus top up of £20 from government, pay £5 tax. Income £115. Then a raise of £10. Earn £110 but now wages too high for top up, pay £6 tax. Income £104 But that's just bad government.

40 Myths People Think Are True, Yet They Are in Reality Very, Very False, As Shared In This Online Thread My dad had this guy helping him out (think Big Box store DIY curb ready helper) who told him "If you sleep with your hair wet, you will bleed out of your mouth"... and he was 110% sure that was fact. We were both just confused and bewildered at this statement. What the hell had this guy witnessed?!

40 Myths People Think Are True, Yet They Are in Reality Very, Very False, As Shared In This Online Thread Had to explain to a grown a*s adult that blood isn’t blue inside the body and red once it hits oxygen because… blood already carries oxygen. ETA: I didn’t expect this to take off, I first commented when the post was brand new and only had 30 comments. I understand that I came off as a snarky a*****e about it, but the dude and I were cool after 10 minutes of convincing him that what he was taught was a myth. No hurt feelings, buds.

40 Myths People Think Are True, Yet They Are in Reality Very, Very False, As Shared In This Online Thread So many people think Narwhals are mythical. A more serious one, that people who have been hurt or oppressed are morally better. My Mom thought that because she had been hurt by her Dad, whatever she did to the family was somehow justified. The Hutus were legitimately oppressed by the Tutsis (but to be fair, that comes back to Leopold, the patron satan of Africa). All people are fundamentally similar.

This again is a half truth. Being cold does not directly make you sick but it heightens the risk of getting sick. That's why cold countries have flu and cold mini-pandemics every year. Cold air makes our nasal tissue more vulnerable to diseases and the natural defenses against viruses and bacteria go down.

When first cut, it can make it look that way, as the hairs normally taper to the tip, but once they are cut, they are the same thickness along the whole length. I had this when my hair grew back after chemo, and to some degree still have it with my eyebrows, as these fell out and regrew and haven't all been trimmed.

That Titanic’s third class were locked below, and not allowed into the boats. Just about any myth on the Titanic topic (especially conspiracy theories) are extremely dumb.

They weren't locked away, but you have to remember that the 3rd class berths were in the least desirable parts of the ship. Single men were put in the forward quarters, families and single women in the back. During the sinking, most of these single men traveled down a long corridor called Scotland Road. By the time they made it to the stern, it was too late. An alternative would have been to climb up a series of ladders that, of course, no one told them about or directed them to use. Another emergency exit would have taken them through 1st and 2nd class areas they had been told were off-limits. With no one to guide them, most men avoided taking these unfamiliar paths. There is also some evidence to show that the 3rd Class women and families were stalled or prevented from reaching Boat Deck. The stewards gave them the runaround and asked that they wait in the 3rd class General Room below the poop deck. Since they were so far back in the ship, they probably didn't understand how badly the ship was damaged until late in the night, so they waited patiently for directions that came far too late for most of them. Tldr: They didn't need to lock 3rd class passengers up; the system did the work all on its own. This is a good article on the 3rd class men: (https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/fatal-journey-third-class-men.html) And this is a good PowerPoint on the gates. It's old, and you have to download it, but it's still accurate: (https://web.archive.org/web/20120213050534/http://wormstedt.com/Titanic/Symposium/gates.html)
