“A Cosmo In One Hand And Filet Mignon In Another”: Rude Karen Won’t Listen To Waiter’s Warning About Rain, Loses The Table For The Whole Group
Working in customer service comes with its own difficulties and challenges. Very often those who work in customer service learn more about people from the way they behave and can sometimes predict their next move. It becomes a subtle art to be able to accommodate a client and make them to come back to a certain restaurant or cafe. But this can only be achieved through learning and experience. One Reddit user @iamjayjayisme decided to share a story that happened to him while working as a waiter to show he was able to manage a rude client in a perfect way.

Working in customer service comes with certain challenges but it teaches us to understand people better

The narrator started the story by stating that some time ago, he worked in a restaurant where very often, some more “entitled” people would come in. The user also revealed that the restaurant had an outdoor dining area that had an amazing view of the ocean. So very often, people would choose to sit there. Of course, it is a great choice when the weather is nice, but one can never know when rain or a storm might come. Having this in mind, the restaurant workers were prepared for such situations by asking people to switch to indoor tables.
One Reddit user shared his experience with serving a group of entitled people who didn’t agree to switch their table

The narrator continued the story by stating that he was serving a table outdoors that had 9 guests. These people turned out to be some of those customers who are very demanding and feel that their lack of manners can be replaced by spending the correct amount of money. The weather report showed that there would be rain that day, so having this in mind, the waiter tried to approach one of the guests and ask the whole group to switch tables by going indoors. Despite the fact that almost the whole restaurant was booked, the staff prepared them a table, knowing that any second, rain could come pouring.

The narrator revealed that in the restaurant where he worked, very often people were asked to switch tables because of the upcoming rain

At first, the waiter had a hard time catching the customer’s attention. He tried to explain the situation multiple times until she yelled at him that they would deal with the situation themselves. The waiter then realized that there was no reason to proceed with the request, so just took their orders and proceeded with moving other people back to the inside of the restaurant.

Sometime after, the rain started to pour and all 9 guests took their drinks and went inside to look for a table. However, at this point, everything was fully booked, so they had nowhere to sit. And on top of that, their meals were ready to be served. The woman asked the waiter to find them some seats but none of them were available and this was when he reminded her that she said they would take care of it on their own.
The same thing happened the day the waiter was serving a group of 9 people

The waiter came to one of the guests to ask her to move from outside to indoors because of upcoming rain

The situation ended with someone from their group asking to wrap the food to take it out, and so they left the restaurant and their half-full drinks, still hungry, and left. A lot of people online were cracking up at this story, stating that no one should mess with a person that delivers food for you. Users were excited to see some rude and obnoxious people get what they deserve for the way they treat other people.

The narrator had nothing else to do but to take their orders and leave them where they were sitting

As promised, soon the rain started and the group went back inside, ready to be seated at another table

However, there were no available tables left, so the woman asked what they should do now and the waiter reminded her that it was their problem now

The situation ended in the guests leaving the restaurant and taking their food with them

I wouldn't have. Yelling and cursing is a hard line for me. If I was at a table and overheard someone I was with speaking to staff like that, I wouldn't have ignored it, even if it was a friend of a friend.

FYI: Servers of just food make less then bartenders. Chefs make more(if your not in fast food anyway. In Ontario Canada: General min wage workers earn $15.00 per hour, a raise from $14.35 last year. Liquor servers (and servers of food that sell alcohol) have received a pay raise from $12.55 to $15.00 per hour. Students under the age of 18 who work 28 hours a week or less when school is in session or work during a break from classes will now make at least $14.10 per hour, up from $13.50 last year. In the US, the AVERAGE rate is $8.00 to $10USD. So converted to Canadian is $10.04 to $12.55. That is NOT enough for most Americans to live off. Depending where they live. That my friends, is WHY YOU TIP!
I'd rather tip the chef, though. He's the one who made a delicious meal. Servers need to start getting paid a decent wage hourly.

Maybe no one could hear the server say that due to the very high noise volume since it was obviously packed when everyone moved inside. It would have only been known to the manager if the lady went and complained directly to the manager herself but then the server would have just denied it and being that she was such a huge asshole, no one would have taken her word for it anyway.

Mary Thompson - Defender of Random Rich People's Honor!!! Lol, don't hurt your back inexplicably carrying all that water for people you've never met.
I don't get her lvl of stupidity. The way the waiter asked was super nice and far sighted, even offered to help moving. What else could you wish for? I know places where, if only drinks had been served yet, we'd have to move without help. :D
If that were me, as the server, I would have announced to the whole table " Attention everyone, there's about to be downpour any minute. Everyone has to be moved inside. We'll take care of bring your drinks and food in and accommodate a table. " If an issue still escalated i would have just gotten the manager. Maybe the party would have listened to someone higher in charge.
And you've got to remember with some people you just can't win. If you don't give them advice about the oncoming rain they'll say "why didn't you advise me?". And if you do give advice about the oncoming rain you're somehow bothering them and intruding on their personal space and you're to blame for the rain.
You do NOT GET to get out of a line to do something and then just walk right back into it to the same place that you were or to start slapping and hitting people because you don't agree with something or you feel shorted somehow or make problems on an in-flight airplane because you don't get the seat you want or not obey a law when everybody else is obeying it. Follow the rules, give due consideration to the advice and listen to your conscience.
When you act like an idiot, yell, insult people, etc that's the kind of thing that comes back upon you. You're all wet. I wish Karens didn't exist. But they do. Both the male and female versions. Although I must say these days I do feel sorry for ladies named Karen who didn't do anything wrong. rules, regulations and advice are given to everybody, whether it's "wear a mask," "you might want to come in now because it's probably going to rain," "sir, I think you may have had a few too many and I'm going to have to cut you off" or "let's not recount all those votes only to come up with the same results.". If it's a law, obey it. Period. If it's advice, do or don't take it but don't act like an asshole about it. Sometimes advice is wrong. That's life! But it wasn't given to you to insult you or to control you or so that the giver of that advice can brag about being right. It is given to help you to be able to avoid problems like covid, getting rained on and looking foolish.
I truly believe, in highschool, ALL STUDENT'S should be mandated to work food service as part of their co-op or volunteer hours. It shows them how hard this work is. You bust your butt. If you don't, food service is NOT the job for you. I've been a waitress, a chef and a lead manager of a privately owned family restaurant that was open over 60 years in an "uppity" area of my big city. This BS "the customer is always right." Is a very very outdated saying. That started back when people were respectful to others or their parents would slap them in the head and make them apologize:) I NEVER tolerated entitled customers. Never. We always had packed breakfasts, lunch and dinner rushes. When world got out I wouldn't allow it, we actually had MORE customers! Not only staff but it's horrible to be a customer and have to deal with other customers being so damn inhumane to employees. Good on this server! Even now, my kids and I clean the entire table. Help the staff!
My husband worked at a restaurant where they encountered this issue often. People would absolutely REFUSE to move inside, assuming that they would take precedence over those waiting to be seated. It happened many times, but one time in particular it was a party of 6 women, all drinking margaritas (it was a tacos & tapas place). He advised them to move inside while there were still tables available, yet they declined, bc of course they’re smarter than a server *eye roll*. Well next thing you know it’s POURING down rain. They all rush inside, drinks in hand, soaking wet, stating that they are ready for their inside table. Jokes on them! It was packed so they had to stand there awkwardly, holding their drinks, and ended up splitting up to sit at the bar as seats came available. People really should listen to their server.
Too much talk here about Karen. Let's take it up a notch and delve into the history and meaning behind the name Liza, now there's some fuel for your fires!
Working with public is hard I know I work with customers all the time its hard to bite your tongue sometimes but what u have to remember karma really sucks and customers will get there's
I stopped going to restaurants. Tipping is extortion. Everybody depending on tips is enabling their boss to get away with paying starvation wages.
When you go out to eat/drink, you are sitting on your ass, telling someone your wants & desires. They scurry off to get it taken care of. Some minutes later it all comes to you, you dont have to move a muscle! Try that at home, see what happens!!
I worked in a restaurant for 2.5 years. This was one of the most thankless jobs I've ever had, factory work was #1. At least in the restaurant there were food, thankful customers but oh so many of them were shitty, irrational, rude and just plain mean. Oh and then there are the ones that wanted to con the store until free food. We had a file and a list of names at the phones just in case they called... Which they invariably did and usually on a busy night... Probably basketball or football postseason. Regardless of venue Karen's are a plague on society. They need to learn... They can't... That other people matter and have feelings. Full stop.
I don't see why anybody would want to post a story on this site when the comments from the people that read the stories totally dilute whatever the topic was whether it's a true topic or a false topic made up because they're too busy jerking themselves off over each other's comments and voice in their opinion about how fake his story was get the whole thing is side tracked to the point that the whole distance of it is lost you can't even probably can't remember what they're talking about what are you people that board with your lives that you just sit there and mental masturbate jerk off with your rhetoric you're pathetic and I know this won't get posted so those of you who don't post my comment to these assholes out there that need to hear it your pathetic best of think about this people only allowed stuff to be posted that they like what happened to freedom of speech huh what happened to our first amendment where you got something bad to say about that maybe that's a fake story huh?!
They got what they deserved. If your friend is being an assh#le to the person serving your food it is in your best interest to step in and check them. Otherwise you may have extras in your food that you don't want.
I'm not sure why people think it's OK to be rude because you have money. People really need to get their act together and learn human decency and manners. Remember the story of Scrooge, at some point in your life, how you treat people will come back to you in a time you don't expect and a way you will not enjoy. #mindyourkarma
I would of gotten the manager and told the manager of her ruse and they’ve been warned and have the manager say their food will be take out if you don’t comply of moving indoors now
“Entitled” is starting to feel like an epithet for “white.” As a white person who occasionally has brunch, may I ask that we stop using stereotypes to identify certain unpleasant sorts of people, and simply describe the behavior of the individual. “A deeply tanned matriarch of 50 flounced out in her silver lamé formal beachwear” is both more evocative and less judgmental.
I don't feel bad for the rest of the table. Know why? Because I would never, NEVER tolerate someone sitting at my table treating a wait staff like that. They either agreed and sided with that behavior, or didn't care enough to stand up for the server. So they deserved what they got.
I know how rude and ridiculous people are, I work in Healthcare. I do think the story is exaggerated though. Unless they are the guy from the song, their idea of fancy must be Applebee's if they got a $60 tip from 9 people who ate steak and drank margaritas. Plus "yelling" is relative. Maybe the person talked a little loud, so the others really didn't notice, or there wasn't this big scene as inferred. Then I definitely don't believe they said what they did at the end. Everyone in the party, and nearby customers would have complained, again, unless it was Applebee's. I picture someone having an uneventful night besides a rude person, curse word, and people getting wet on the patio, then at a bar with friends later telling this story with theatrics. With that said wait staff are treated horribly, and then people don't tip. They then busted their ass off for 2 hours for $5.They should be compensated an hourly minimum if their tips don't cover a minimum of $15 an hour like DoorDash.
I wish that people would use a different name like Gertrude or another old name instead of Karen. My sisters name is Karen and she is a sweetie. I know other Karens as well that are nothing like the jerks who think they are entitled.
It's these type of people, people who treat others as a lesser human that bothers me the most. I have WAY more respect for a person who is just as respectful to a janitor as they would be to a CEO, than a person who is condescending to anyone who they feel are of a lower social or economical class. Good on your for standing your ground against these A-hole Karens!
This was written and/or presented in a very odd way. Why not just show the screenshots or the copy and paste, or rewrite it. This article did both. It pre-captioned the screen shots with the same info, but written differently. Which made it very confusing and really took away from the story. (Admittedly I am easily confused sometimes. But I believe my criticism here is valid. And I'm not trying to crap on it. Just trying to explain why I didn't like the "presentation" of it.) So yeah, it took away from the story which is unfortunate, because I love stories where entitled people (Karen's, or otherwise) get what they deserve. I mean I feel like someone actually put a decent amount of work into ruining a good story. Not sure who or why. Or why someone else didn't question this style. You need some good friends around you who are honest. And will tell you when you... Aren't doing your best work, I guess is the best way to put it. But what do I know. Seriously, I am not a writer.
Karen is a term that was badly needed and the way it became famous shows how badly it was needed. Calling entitled hypocritical women trash by calling them Karen is the way to heal. Keep it going, guys!
I’ll slap the s**t out any Karen’s or Kenneth’s I see them disrespecting restaurant workers.
No way a fine restaurant would hire a waitress who was capable of being rude to a customer, no matter how bad the circumstance. Feelings don’t get involved in professional employees.
Regardless of how the one “Karen” woman acted, the OP should have relayed the message to another member of the party, preferably one on the other end of the table. And even if the waiter still could not get the party to move inside, was no excuse for the place to give away the table they were holding, knowing full well that they would eventually need it. The OP could have been the hero instead of the asshole! Regardless of how customers behave (and it sounds like this one was pretty drunk), does not give the waiter the right to act in a similar manner.
My name is Becky. Thankfully it never took off like KAREN. It didn't really bother me that much because I'm not prone to knee jerk racist actions and I didn't identify with person being called a Becky.
ok, so she was a bitch... but still, 20 % tip is a fücking robbery
If she didn't want to tip, why didn't she just ask for it to be removed? It's not like she's worried about being rude.
Having been a waitress in my past, I know that although a restaurant puts on their menu that there is a gratuity added for large parties, you can NOT be forced to pay the added gratuity. Tips are based on your service to your customer, if you provide bad service, or no service at all (which crappy servers are known not to provide their best customer service when they think they're getting a good tip regardless), you get NO tip. And, large party gratuities do not get added to meals that are not eaten at the establishment. That said, it's amusing that the group's meal was ruined because of an entitled affluent member of their group
No way this is true. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for 20 years and I guarantee that 1-no server would say “f**king deal with it” to a guest and still have a job, air quotes or not. 2- No decent manager would keep seating the door knowing that a storm was approaching and tables were on the patio. They would move the tables themselves. And 3- a $60 tip that was 20% of the bill means that the bill was only $300. For 9 people,, that’s only $33 a head. Just the filet mignon alone costs more than that, not including their top shelf drinks or lobster tail add-ons. I know that most of this stuff is fake but they could’ve tried a little harder to make it believable. It sounds like this was just someone’s “gotcha” fantasy and they’ve never actually worked in an upscale restaurant.

Please stop with this childish “Karen” name calling. If you understand people so much then you would know it’s wrong to classify people. Also, so what if they want to sit outside. Leave them alone. Nobody likes an annoying server rich or poor. There’s assholes in all races. Simply get your manger if they complain that’s why they get paid more.

Shame on you on your attempt to correct or educate the guest. Knowing full well what would happen he should have saved a table for them and not allowed an incoming party to take that same table again shame on you as a professional you should know better. Are you actually correcting the guest? As a long-standing restaurant manager I can assure you you never would have done that in my restaurant or dining room.
I agree. I went to culinary art school and this is very unprofessional behavior on the part of the server. Sounds like more of a ghetto restaurant in a ghetto corner of town.

Why the heck don't they have umbrellas for their outdoor seating? Not even one?
I'm not sure but living at the Jersey Shore I'd guess it's because it can get extremely windy very often and umbrellas become dangerous missiles in stormy weather. People have even been impaled.

Load More Replies...Most aren't "getting paid for their Time" though! NOT at 2 bucks an hour and NOT if that party had stiffed that server and there hadn't had been an automatic gratuity included for a large party. Most restaurants don't include gratuity for large parties. I've had waitresses tell me they were stiffed by parties of 10 after having been abused by them for hours. Im curious to know if that evil customer had complained to you about the server cursing at her, would you have fired that server if you hadn't of actually heard the server curse yourself? Would you have automatically taken that rotten customers word over it and fired the server, even if the server denied it?

Nice comments Jennifer , you can say that again, I will be glad to take you out for a drink, do you mind if we become friends, your comments got my attention, and I will be glad to have a new friend here, how can we connect, let have fan together lol.
Load More Replies...And then everyone clapped. I wonder if people think we actually believe these stories.
Well this wii be reflected in your tip. Well ma'am this will be reflected in your afterlife.
Load More Replies...Y'all should probably stop using the word "Karen". It would be racist if you said "A bunch of Shenequas sat down..." and this isn't any better.
Are you implying that only white people are named Karen? So, Black people aren't allowed to have that name? That's really f*****g racist of you.
Load More Replies...You guys are ALL TOOLS. Get on a random story that has nothing to do with politics and start acting like bitches. All you m***********s are racist. Simple as that. Every single 1 of you Karen's and Donald's and Joe's. Go f**k your cousins, leather face ass hoes 🥴
The fakest story I've ever read. "What luxury!"? This isn't the 1820s sir.
I heard Kyrsten Sinema changed her BRAND from Mavericky and Quirky to Typical KAREN Sinema.
Please stop with the childish “Karen” name calling. If you understand people so much then you should know it’s wrong to classify people. There’s all types of people in all colors that act that way. Trust me I know (worked in customer service for a long time) Anyways so what they wanted to sit outside and they wanted to be left alone. Nobody likes an annoying server. Nobody rich or poor. If they say no then leave them alone, let them get rained on, so be it! If they come back and complain it’s on them and ask for your manager (that’s why managers get paid more)
Shame on you on your attempt to correct or educate the guest.
Load More Replies...People complaining about the name Karen being used are the epitome of a Karen, hahahaha
Why the heck don't they have umbrellas for their outdoor seating? Not even one?
I'm not sure but living at the Jersey Shore I'd guess it's because it can get extremely windy very often and umbrellas become dangerous missiles in stormy weather. People have even been impaled.
Load More Replies...People making stories I'd like this just for likes and views are some of the worst people in the world. Well. If they will make up something like this believe me they will make up anything.
You are unnecessarily het up about this story. almost as though you are afraid they will recognize you, even without the wet steak.
Load More Replies...That's sad but there are plenty of rich stupid people making up justice stories too.
Load More Replies...Nice comments Jason, you can say that again, I will be glad to take you out for a drink, do you mind if we become friends, your comments got my attention, and I will be glad to have a new friend here, how can we connect, let have fan together lol.
Load More Replies...Umm, f**k that. I've been in this industry for over a decade and I'm sick of the notion that we should bend over backwards to blow people away. Curse at someone for trying to help you? You deserve to have your evening ruined and for your friends to be pissed at you too.
Load More Replies...I suggest you Google "North Caldwell" and click on "Images" before doing so much giggling, Canadian...some of those cribs in that area can put Beverly Hills to SHAME.
