“A Cosmo In One Hand And Filet Mignon In Another”: Rude Karen Won’t Listen To Waiter’s Warning About Rain, Loses The Table For The Whole Group
1.3Mviews
Working in customer service comes with its own difficulties and challenges. Very often those who work in customer service learn more about people from the way they behave and can sometimes predict their next move. It becomes a subtle art to be able to accommodate a client and make them to come back to a certain restaurant or cafe. But this can only be achieved through learning and experience. One Reddit user @iamjayjayisme decided to share a story that happened to him while working as a waiter to show he was able to manage a rude client in a perfect way.

Working in customer service comes with certain challenges but it teaches us to understand people better

The narrator started the story by stating that some time ago, he worked in a restaurant where very often, some more “entitled” people would come in. The user also revealed that the restaurant had an outdoor dining area that had an amazing view of the ocean. So very often, people would choose to sit there. Of course, it is a great choice when the weather is nice, but one can never know when rain or a storm might come. Having this in mind, the restaurant workers were prepared for such situations by asking people to switch to indoor tables.
One Reddit user shared his experience with serving a group of entitled people who didn’t agree to switch their table

The narrator continued the story by stating that he was serving a table outdoors that had 9 guests. These people turned out to be some of those customers who are very demanding and feel that their lack of manners can be replaced by spending the correct amount of money. The weather report showed that there would be rain that day, so having this in mind, the waiter tried to approach one of the guests and ask the whole group to switch tables by going indoors. Despite the fact that almost the whole restaurant was booked, the staff prepared them a table, knowing that any second, rain could come pouring.

The narrator revealed that in the restaurant where he worked, very often people were asked to switch tables because of the upcoming rain

At first, the waiter had a hard time catching the customer’s attention. He tried to explain the situation multiple times until she yelled at him that they would deal with the situation themselves. The waiter then realized that there was no reason to proceed with the request, so just took their orders and proceeded with moving other people back to the inside of the restaurant.

Sometime after, the rain started to pour and all 9 guests took their drinks and went inside to look for a table. However, at this point, everything was fully booked, so they had nowhere to sit. And on top of that, their meals were ready to be served. The woman asked the waiter to find them some seats but none of them were available and this was when he reminded her that she said they would take care of it on their own.
The same thing happened the day the waiter was serving a group of 9 people

The waiter came to one of the guests to ask her to move from outside to indoors because of upcoming rain

The situation ended with someone from their group asking to wrap the food to take it out, and so they left the restaurant and their half-full drinks, still hungry, and left. A lot of people online were cracking up at this story, stating that no one should mess with a person that delivers food for you. Users were excited to see some rude and obnoxious people get what they deserve for the way they treat other people.

The narrator had nothing else to do but to take their orders and leave them where they were sitting

As promised, soon the rain started and the group went back inside, ready to be seated at another table

However, there were no available tables left, so the woman asked what they should do now and the waiter reminded her that it was their problem now

The situation ended in the guests leaving the restaurant and taking their food with them

Let's stop calling these situation's Karens. Call them for what they are; Aholes!
Karens are a specific niche group of a-holes, just like 'creeper' is - an apt description. If people really want to stop hearing the term, collective action to stop the behavior is what's needed.
I don't like it because I have friends and relatives named Karen and I feel bad that their name has become a pejorative.
Same. Two of the loveliest, kindest people I know are called Karen.
I'm Karen.. Doesn't bother me. D**k has lived with it for years as has John.
I bet you have friends named D**k, and John, and Pat, and other names that have two meanings.

so what? every language has certain names used in such way... but only americans whine about it like pussies
that is not true. in my language we just say jerk or cow or something similar. but then we have a beautiful list of pejoratives anyway so no need to missuse names 🤣🤷
In my opinion it's a useful term, but unfortunate that's it's only really used on women, and also unfortunate for all the people who's names are Karen.
In what way is Karen more useful than just calling them a b*tch, jerk, ahole, etc? You have more cons than pros, so idk why you even felt the need to say that.
Let's go Brandon, you may have heard it recently. It's a slur . It applies to a male like D**k and customers of prostitutes are called Johns. So the high dungeon about it being sexist is out. Naming people for their occupations started at the very beginning of civilization. Do you know any Millers, Smiths, Rocks, Carvers, Carpenters, Gentrys, Riders etc.?
Let's go Brandon that means f**k joe biden actually.fyi
It clarifies that you are dealing with an entitled asshole who generally gives off an air of arrogance. That sentence takes a bit. After all someone is an asshole for lots of different reasons, bullying, obnoxious behaviors, racism, insulting people etc. However it isn't neccessarily them acting entitled. Granted using a name probably wasn't the best choice but it is faster and unfortunately the US is a country where if we could communicate by removing all but the first letter of words we would.
It's only used for white women, it seems like. If this is cool, I take it it's okay to tell a story about some Shenequas? No? Okay, then.
Your comment about Shenequas says more about you than anything else.
He's making a point about why Karen is the catch all term for entitled women. Your comment proves their point that is better to use Karen for any bitchy entitled woman, rather than a name that is "race specific". The fact that it's mostly used to categorize white females is just a testament to how they happen to be more likely to exhibit such behavior... Trust me, I can tell thousands of "Karen" stories that span all of the races. I've met a lot of "Ken's" as well, the make counterpart to a Karen.
While you're right that a white woman is the most typical example of this entitlement, the term Karen actually originated from people of color to describe white women who weaponized their privilege against people of color, and it has since spread to include all forms of entitlement (though it still leans towards privilege having a role - there is an unbalanced power dynamic between most essential workers and customers based largely in the low wages and minimal job security in essential positions).
One again, grow up. If you look at YouTube channels which compile these videos you'll see people of all colours. Your use of the name Shenequa in this way shows you up for the disgusting Proud Boy incel that you are.
It's used for women who behave a specific way. Those women happen to be white.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
Yes because they've been white. Black women r divas. Lol
From what I've seen & heard it's been used(including by me) for anyone of any race/color, etc.; the male version being Kyle or maybe Kevin. Also, I'm prejudiced against all pissant bitchweed assholes equally.
It is not only used for white women, it is used for anyone being a Karen, some white some not, male or female
I've heard it used for any person who acts entitled, back, white, male, female, etc.
It's also not like "karen" is the only name we use to tell stories like these. There is also "Chad", "Kyle", "Susan", "Janet", "Becky" etc. And as you have proven yourself, there is a stereotype against black people's names as well. So your comment just says more about you than anything
It's used for anyone who is specifically an asshole to service/retail industry workers. Since those tend to be rich older people... and white people are the ones with all the wealth... it just so happened that a lot of those people who were assholes to service/retail workers tended to be named Karen, a popular name among white boomers. Thus the name stuck because these people that kept making life hell for service/retail workers were repeatedly named Karen. It is not required that someone is white though for them to be a "Karen", just that they are an asshole to service workers/retail workers and exhibit a specific sense of entitlement.

It's specifically for white women who harass Shenequas for no good reason. So the KAREN doesn't consider the humanity of her victim she just lumps ALL blacks together as not wanted in her vicinity. So KAREN is a clapback to a specific prejudiced behavior.
It makes sense for an oppressed group to be able to talk about their oppressors in code, like, "Hey, watch out for the third-shift supervisor. She's a real Karen!" People on the internet using en masse is something else...
You sound like someone who is making an excuse for using a derogatory word. Are you? Maybe you did not think that far and thats okay too. Some people are followers and some are independent thinkers. I feel that a derogatory word means just that what it intended to be. In other words "You are such and such n that leads me to defend myself with calling you a such and such. They are nearly words used by someone that exhibited terrible behavior, by someone who exhibited terrible behavior????? Crazy when you think of it that way right.!
Ah I think it's Ken for males
You hardly ever see people calling out "Kens" though.
Yeah it is Ken

Chad
I've heard Daren for males.
Chad.
A Chad is different from a Karen
Nope. Karen is a normal name. And for all the thousands of Karens out there who are doing nothing wrong, but whose name isngetting ruined by people like you using it "for a specific niche group". We are not. We are actual people of all shapes, sizes and most of us are probably nice people (as most people are nice). So please stop using our name to refer to the aforementioned "niche group".
Thank you. Well said.
You are better off changing your name at this point
No.
I just think it's very unfair for all the people named Karen, it's not their fault!!! (No, it's not my name)
This website stopping using it would be a start. It's misogynistic.
It's not misogynistic just because it's negative and it specifically refers to women.
"It's not misogynistic just because it's negative and it specifically refers to women". Huh? There's no logic in that reply, lol.
Lisa, "misogynistic" is defined as a "hatred or mistrust of women," while it's possible to have a word that refers to a negative insult towards women specifically without encapsulating all women as its defining trait. A female-specific insult that is characterized by a trait which that woman possesses is not the same as an insult that is characterized solely by being a woman. Does that make sense (not asking that in a condescending manner - sincerely just trying to spell out the differential element)? Like A is always B, but B is not always A. A [an insult used against women because they're women] is always misogynistic, but B [an insult against women] is not always A [misogynistic]. The difference is whether or not the insult is used against those characterized by simply being a woman or whether it's an insult used against women based on a specific characteristic (beyond just their being female.)
I don't see any specific name used to refer to asshole men, so yes, it is misogynistic actually.
You mean Daren, Ken, or Kevin? Those have all been used to describe men that behave the same way as their female counterparts. They've even been called 'Male Karen'. So your argument about 'Karen' being a misogynistic term falls flat on its face.
Right idea, wrong name. Chad wants to speak to your manager. 😉
Yea but the difference is you never actually hear men behaving badly as those names yet you hear Karen constantly many times a day and all over the internet. Just EVERYWHERE.
"Chad", "Daren", "Kyle", "Ken" etc. Just because you don't know about the various male names that are used to refer to assholes/douchebags doesn't mean that they don't exist.
There are specific ways that women can be a-holes that differ from the way men can be a-holes. Particularly, I'm thinking of the way terfs weaponize victimization due to being female and insist that women are pure beings who can never be predatory or oppressors towards others, despite privilege existing on multiple axes and the fact they actively reinforce misogyny with their beliefs, hurting everyone from cis women to even cis men - that last because misandry is largely repackaged misogyny, like how being emotional is stigmatized as a feminine trait and therefore bad which leads to men suppressing their emotions. But that's not the only example - there's the racist "white woman's tears", which led to the term Karen being coined, even. "Karen" is used to denote a specific type of behavior primarily seen in specifically white middle class women, just as "Chad", "Kyle" and "Kevin" refer to specific types of behavior primarily seen with men - who have examples of aholery specific to them.
It's Chad. And he's been around as long as Karen.
D**k, Judas, Chad, John, Tom (fool), Jack (off), (simple) Simon, Tom D**k and Harry, Napoleon, Judy... not to mention the slew of slang words that are insults specifically designated for a male.
Although I agree it can be used in a misogynistic way.
To Aeon Flux, that's what I will agree on. Karen in itself is not misogynystic, it's the context that it's used in that makes it misogynistic or not. Calling someone a Karen because they are being an asshole to service/retail workers: not misogynistic. Calling someone a Karen just because they're a woman: misogynistic.
Yeah, sometimes it's just used as a weapon against "uppity" women. And all these people talking about "There are males terms too!" I have never seen an article on here calling out Kyles or Kevins or whatever the term is... There is "Chad" but that's an incel term that's caught on.
Yeah you would think freedom of speech is a terrible thing wouldn't you .. I bet it's something you love when it's convenient for you though

Why? Karen is 50%. Chad makes up the other half. Equal representation.

And racist.
Grow up, Ryan Brooks.

Well, it is racist. Everyone knows that a 'Karen' refers to a white woman. Does it now apply to people of African and Asian heritage too? I must have missed the memo...
there are plenty of vids of women of all races being called Karen. The fact that the majority of the ones everyone sees are white women just speaks to who is more guilty of that sort of behavior. And nobody is trying to oppress them because they're white ffs. They're not being oppressed at all or accused of stereotypical accusations that usually come with racism.
Good god do you live under a rock?
Huh? Let's not go there
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
so any non-gender-neutral term is a hate word now? b!tch? d!ck?
How do you propose stopping such behaviour? That's impossible. We cannot control other people's actions, only call them out on it.
Just a thought... people who deem themselves above the “specific niche group of a-holes” could practice some self reflection and stop perpetuating the pejorative use of first names to embody bad behavior in public.
My SIL Karen is a very sweet caring lady.
"Collective action"...so a class-action lawsuit? 🤣 /S
Wow. Everyone in this entire thread is a bunch of bigoted snowflakes on both sides. It's only good if it fits your narrative, right? Says a lot about humans if you ask me. You all think you're different and you're special but you're not. None of you.
But you sure are.
Thank you for trying. I don't say things like Bitter Bob, Negative Nancy, Debbie Downer, etc. There is no excuse for using someone's name as a pejorative. I think it is lazy, sloppy thinking, writing, etc by people who can not come up with fresh & creative expressions. It's quite sad actually.
I agree. This woman was a Karen but more and more it is being used as a misogynistic term to include any woman that complains about anything. Some complaints are legitimate.
I'm guessing Zoe has a sister.. .
Louder for the people in the back!!
Ok Karen. Lol. Jk jk
I agree-I know someone named Karen--This makes her feel uncomfortable--"IF" were going to put a name to this behavior --use a name where there can be No mistake-- Mabey TRUMP???
Spot the lady named Karen.
Let's never stop calling entitled women names that make them ashamed for being entitled women. Karen is so famous for a reason. And that reason is you, screaming sexism, Karen.

We can stop about 10 years after white ppl stop calling all latina women maria, all black boys thugs, black women kiesha (etc) and stop using the n word. Until then this niche group of female assholes will be dawned Karen.
Change starts with you. But somehow I think you like the fight. So ask yourself, are you racist?
Bigoted by the continued oppression and lack of change yes but based on the definition and sociological aspect of the word black people can't be racist because we don't stand to benefit from it. And I love how white people always want black people to be the bigger person when white women are still to this day using their assumed innocents to tell lies that often end in life changes including death for minorities specifically black people.
How many white women do you know telling lies that result in life changes and death for blk people? 4? 5? All from social media. Now I ask you this.... How many white women are living in the USA? 1 billion? 2 billion? So yea I guess outta 2 billion white women in America you should judge and hate ALL of them because you saw 5 being assholes on the internet.
You can't argue with ignorant. She just literally said black people can't be racist. I am Hispanic, and have been called sooo many ridiculous racial slurs while at my job, I work in Healthcare. None of it was warranted at all. The law prohibits a lot of things, I and was never rude. While people of all races cursed and acted ridiculous, the only people who have ever called me racial slurs to my face were black people. You name it, spic, wet back, beaner, border jumper, and so many Taco Bell comments.
I'm old and have never heard anybody called anything but Karen. No Maria, no Keisha and a thug can be any guy. You're making this up.

This didn't happen
I'm partly on the side of the server here, but if it had been me, I would have made sure the entire party knew about the approaching storm. Just telling one person who you've assumed is the host is really not professional. When I was waiting tables, I usually moved on from the a**hole person & spoke with the rest of the group.
I wouldn't have. Yelling and cursing is a hard line for me. If I was at a table and overheard someone I was with speaking to staff like that, I wouldn't have ignored it, even if it was a friend of a friend.
@Mary Thompson I'm a bank manager. I see wealthy people behave like that more often than those less fortunate. Not all of them, but you sure seem to be fixated on this being fake.
People 'judge' you by whom you associate with, and for good reason since when you fail to set an example by doing what is right,( not politically correct folks), or by speaking up then that action or inaction will cause others to believe you to be the same as the person you are with.

I don't think this is a completely accurate story.. People with that kind of money don't behave that way in public 99%of the time
I'd say that's exactly the way they behave with the "help"!!!
Then I guess they were the 1%.
Naw. They all heard and saw their friend's interaction. They didn't step in, they didn't inquire, they didn't apologize. If any one of them had thought even "I'm not okay with that, I'm gonna go apologize to the server" they would have found out - they didn't even need to make it public, they could have taken the coward's way and not called out their friend. But they didn't even do that. They saw it and decided "That thing that just happened is 100% okay with me." They made their choice.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
That's why this is fake. Just because People have money don't assume that they are all rude and what allowed us to go on
Just because people have money don't assume they have class, manners or tact. I worked for an upscale retailer & a lot of those women totally deserve the title "rich bitch".
You can see it on Yelp reviews of expensive resorts etc. too. They might have this huge reputation, but only a 3-star rating because of all the people complaining about little things.
you must be one of those rich Karen assholes for you to be defending them so highly. Rich White people usually stick to their own kind, even if their behavior is trash.
I’m not about to go to everyone at that table to relay a message when they heard her yell “we’ll fu”*#ing deal with it” why didn’t anyone inquire about what they would have to deal with? If that was someone in my group I would want to know lol what’s going on.
Mary Thompson, is this story about you? Because you are working overtime to convince people that the story is fake, and that wealthier white women don't behave like this. You are strangely invested in this.
Mary Thompson obviously has never been on the receiving end of this kind of behavior. If she's ever worked a day in retail, she's gotten incredibly lucky, because I worked 3 months total of non-high-end retail in my life and dealt with more than one of these types of people per month. Mary, you're not fooling anyone here. Please do everybody a favor and don't go out in public if this story is in fact about you (or similar enough to fit your behavior).

Because it's fake this never happened anybody that believes it does has lost their mind
Be serious. Server wasn't whispering. Her yelling at him surely let her group know what was up. She was in control here n ignoring her control over the group would have been another problem. Don't turn this on the server w shudda cudda wudda. Karen's an asshole n got what she deserved.

Maybe you should've cut a little realized this is not even a true story
I would have probably not. I truly believe that in a group everyone is responsible for everyone and I am pretty sure it was the same way here. Imo they are complicit bc they did note the yelling (at that point I would've asked my host what's wrong and gotten myself involved). They chose to ignore the situation/to ignore someone being treated wrongly by being yelled at.

Good thing it's a fake story that never happened
Put that's too much logic. People wanna hear Karen got served not that the server was a karen
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
Because it's an extremely fake story
Totally agree, it's best to act authoritatively and address the whole table. Also, in circumstances such as this where it's guaranteed to be unworkable for them to remain where they are, don't ask, tell: 'We are moving you inside.'
I would've tried telling someone once in a regular tone so whoever is around could hear not whispering or yelling. If she cussed I would've said ok & then walked away to let my manager know & have them handle it. Maybe if he/she went out to the patio & said "excuse me Im going to have to move u all inside or u cannot be served, they would've listened. She treated that server like trash & they did nothing wrong. It's just my opinion whether anyone agrees or not.
I would have asked my buddy in the kitchen to piss in her food.
Nope. The server's responsibility is to talk to the person who made the reservation; the head of the party. The entire indoor area was almost booked. Servers don't have time to talk to 9 individuals. Also, after the woman screamed the other people should have taken note and asked what the problem was. The server was 100% professional. What's not professional is screaming at another human being. Seeing as the other members of the group suggesting paying and leaving instead of demanding a table as well makes it pretty clear the others overheard the conversation.
Correct, the server shouldn't have even started by telling just this lady. "Excuse me, everyone, may I please have you attention?"
Yesss
I think you're right, I wouldn't try to talk to one, I would stand there and get their attention. All of them.
I agree with Memere. She should have informed others at the table. Not all rich people are unreasonable when it comes to this sort of thing. Best to let a few know so they could have the option of moving in to the indoor table. Eventually Karen would have followed to avoid being ignored.

Believe it or not rich people do not act this way around other rich people unless it's their own family in their own private homes. Nobody who has money wants to be seen as this type of person it's a fake story stopwatching love stop watching movies and believe me everything you see a on the big screen
I've worked a few upper crust establishments over the years and I never, NEVER proffered service to anyone who behaved as MELANIA did in this story. In at least half a dozen establishments wait staff were always told to expect patrons to be difficult BUT never to allow anyone to curse, belittle, touch inappropriately, or otherwise treat staff, other diners, or passersby abusively. Sure, rude happens but loudly cursing staff crosses the boundaries of reasonable behavior into abusive behavior and that's intolerable. Rarely did I ever see anything such as this happen but whenever a volatile situation arose we were instructed to immediately summon the manager and chef who then confronted the offender, cleared their tab and banned them from the establishment after taking their picture which was posted in the locker room and office. The receipt from the cleared tab copied and stapled to the picture for validation. Unruly guests and children of inattentive parents ruin others meals!
The fact that they didn't speak up regarding Karen behavior means they either agree with it, or don't care enough to correct it. So just as guilty. I would never stand by if someone at my table spoke like that to a worker.
Oh, hell no! You act like an a-hole then nothing out of the ordinary should be done for you. Listen up, people! Server does NOT mean SERVANT!!! Learn the difference or STAY HOME where people like you belong. I would probably not last a single day as a server because I will 100% treat the customer exactly how they treat me. People like that "Karen" are the #1 reason tipped wages should be eliminated. That will remove the false sense of empowerment pompous people think they have.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
I agree. Why did the server only tell one person the situation instead of letting the whole party know? It's almost like she wanted the whole party suffer because they live a different lifestyle than hers (notice how the OP can't stop talking about their luxuries and lifestyle.) A good server would have ignored the Karen and proceeded to another person in the group. This server took a single persons exchange and made 7 others suffer.
...and I'm led to believe that despite this shrieking harpy yelling her lungs loose that NOBODY in her party was aware of the exchange? Really? Of course they heard. Likely ALL heard and yet not one took it upon themselves to speak out and attempt to correct this situation. So much for BREEDING!!!!

Especially when there's "two groups" in the group. They also interrupted the same person a couple times and then wonder why they got pissy, as well as a 20% mandatory tip?? What is with America and demanding tips instead of paying their workers properly???
