It can be incredibly physically and mentally stimulating to expose yourself to terrifying stories, whether that’s something like demonic possession or stories about alien infestation.

OMG. That poor lady, I hope she didn't have permanent eye damage. Smashing somebody's face into a cake is stupid and NOT funny. Neither is smearing cake all over somebody's face and clothes especially at weddings.
Horror content brings with it very contrasting, clashing feelings. You get a bunch of positive and negative emotions.
On the one hand, you experience a ton of anxiety and fear.
On the other hand, you also experience a large amount of joy and excitement. It’s thrilling, captivating, and it makes you crave more.

each Bamboo species dies after a certain # of years; the die-off is set off by flowering and production of its fruit - this leads to a rat infestation where the females have a litter every couple months. Once the fruit is finished, the rats terrorize the area in their thousands
People who are big fans of horror tend to have a psychological protective frame that’s made up of 3 parts.
First, they have a safety frame, where they know that they are safe while enjoying horror content.
Second, they have a sense of detachment, where they understand that what they see and hear isn’t actually real or threatening.
And finally, they have a sense of control where they feel confident that they’ll be able to overcome any and all dangers that they encounter. You don’t have to have all 3, but having fewer can mean that you avoid horror content.

A sculpture in Kiev that for some reason really made it hit home for me - it’s a patch of “wheat” (made out of gold coloured metal) with a black iron cage overtop, to symbolize the food that was growing in Ukraine but was then taken away from them. They had food but they couldn’t eat it because Russia took it. So heartbreaking.

So many on this site love to look at the US and act like they're superior. My dude, as a country, we're not even 300 years old. European countries have been committing atrocities for millennia, far and above much worse than anything the US has done. Perspective, please.

On the flip side, people from countries with less wealth feel like they have less control over their circumstances, pushing them away from the genre.

The Washington Post stresses the fact that recreational fear can be a lot of fun under the right circumstances. But it’s not just about enjoying yourself. Horror can be an important tool for learning. Not only do you get the rush and a boosted mood from getting scared, but you also prepare yourself for (theoretical) dangerous situations.
The director of the Recreational Fear Lab at Aarhus University, Mathias Clasen, told the Washington Post that people consuming horror learn about the dangers of the world and better understand their own responses. “What does it feel like to be afraid? How much fear can I take?”

The key is to find some sort of balance between too much and too little fear. If a recreational horror experience is too tame, your audience is likely to get bored. However, crank the fear up too high and people will be far too anxious to enjoy themselves.
It’s a balancing act that’s hard to get right because everyone’s relationship with horror is so individualistic.

The ‘DarkestGram’ project was created on Instagram quite a while back, in May 2019. Over the past 6+ years, the curator of the account has drawn in over 47k loyal followers and scary-story lovers from all corners of the internet.
From the curator’s perspective, the account is the “darkest page” on the entire social network.

I have a paste that I give to my cats every couple days (just a lil glob on their food) because one of them has a hairball problem, and they constantly switch food bowls while eating so if I don’t give it to them both the one cat won’t get his dose lol. The main ingredient is mineral oil I believe 😅

The owners of the factory were not found guilty but were required to pay out $75 per victim. The real kicker? The insurance money the owners got paid them $400 a victim 😉

This one is a myth that came out of the movies made about it. In most of the cases, the separation of classes was just a bout stopping people wandering into the other areas, so the barriers were waist height gates, or closed doors. A much bigger factor in the 3rd class death rate was the maze like layout of the lower decks, and in many cases immigrants were unable to speak English, so could not follow signs to reach the boat decks

It's true. The phenomenon, heat bursts, has also happened more than once. The thermometers there only went up to 140F and they broke from the heat causing their liquid to over-expand during the storm. Corn there actually cooked on the stalk.
