Have you ever considered volunteering at an animal shelter? Millions of animals are in need of love and attention, and most of all, a new home! Volunteers are vitally important to shelters, many of which are overstretched and underfunded.
We here at Bored Panda compiled a list of pics taken by animal shelter volunteers, so you can see just how sweet it is to be surrounded by fluffballs while at work. After seeing these, you’ll definitely be inspired to go and help out. Don’t be fooled though, as appealing as spending time with animals may be, you will be asked to do all kinds of tasks. From admin and fundraising to cleaning the poop out of the kennels, there is much more to it than cuddling puppies!

I SERIOUSLY HATE THIS. Not the pic, but people like you who say," how could they be in a shelter, they're so adorable!" Because,heck, he could have misbehaved, been born in the wild, or anything, really, but the "ugly" animals will usually appreciate you the most because you loved them when no one else did. So NO, it's not all about the cute ones.

Yes think so, chinchillas & cats are cool playmates as long as equal attention is given. W/ pigs just have to be careful kitty can't get to it when it's confined in a cage. Check with your vet & research it too.

The shelter may have a "pet" dog that lives there and is taken care of by all the people there. I'm thinking that's what the dog in the top cage is, and they wanted him/her in the photo. I'd hate to think that was the only dog not adopted.

So beautiful, my two little brats sleep like this n l cannot stop taking photos, when its really cold, all 3 including the old lady sleep on top of me, l dont move all night because l dont want to disturb them, l'm in so much pain all night and especially in the mornings because they sleep on top of me. I am disabled so getting up in the mornings is very hard, I get stiff from these 3 on top of me.

Nope, it looks very, very much like a fox cub. Normally they are kept quite some time well hidden in the den, so humans only get to see them when they already look like foxes. When they are born the ears are shut and tiny and the fur is not yet it's final colours, so people easily mistake them for dog puppies or even kittens!

He could be cute, but he could misbehave like heck. Also, just cause they're pretty doesn't mean they're the best. Usually the "outcast ugly dogs" are the best companions, because you love them when no one else did, and they will reciprocate that love even more fiercely. Just because they're cute doesn't mean that they're the dog you need.

I loved working at a pet daycare. I'm so bummed though cause my back is bad now. The dogs liked me a lot and tackled me whenever I came into work. I wish I could still do that kind of work. So rewarding but all these photos make it all look so relaxing, lol. It's hard work physically.

There's a surprising amount of purebreds in this shelter. Springer Spaniels, Boxer, Great Dane, Basset Hound, Boston Terrier, Bernese, Standard Poodle. You don't often see purebreds in a shelter because people pay serious money for them and are not likely to abandon them. Or if they do have to give them up they usually give them to a rescue club specializing in that breed. Why would there be so many purebreds here?

Dangerous if it was a shelter that usually works with domestics, these guys have all sorts of diseases that could kill cats, dogs, and small children (not to mention blind adult humans. They really short be at a wildlife center, for the safety of everyone involved (trust me, I run one).

This is so sad. We also have to cats no one wanted. A blind one with no eyes from Greece who was supposed to be killed. Very smart and has no problems at all with not seeing the world. He sees everything with the help of his ears and nose. And a black cat that was overly shy and afraid when in the shelter. Now he's the cuddliest and happiest ball of fluff.

My dog had 13, but one died. Each puppy looked like it was from a different breed. All their body shapes were the same, but the markings were different. She was a Catahoula leopard hound, and one of her babies looked like black lab, golden retriever, dalmatian, boxer, a black white and gray catahoula, black and tan rottie... I can't remember the rest. It was the weirdest thing. I have some grainy pictures somewhere that I took on an ancient camera phone back in 04. The monochromatic houla had solid blue eyes. Unfortunately, we lived out in the boonies on a ranch in OK, and some of the pups disappeared before we could find them homes 😭 I also had a short video of that food bowl circling thing that puppies do when they're eating. Now I want to go find it.

My dog had 13, she was so exhausted and annoyed by them she refused to nurse. We improvised by feeding them baby oatmeal. Every morning before school we had to line up 13 bowls of cereal and then wipe down all the little (black of course, so the oatmeal made a mess!) faces with washcloths. We found homes for all but two and kept them. So we had mom, dad and the two pups most of my life.

When i was 15 i had a cat called nugget, a black stray who walked into my flat and stayed until an ex-friend stole him. Within 2 weeks of meeting him, he was sitting, shaking hands, talking with a meow when i said hello, and also lay down and rolled over. I did NOT teach him this, any of it, he copied my dogs to get attention and he was a quick learner.. This baby reminded me of him, he brought me endless hours of fun and many laughs as he tried to outdo one of my dogs. He also was an expert tease- i lived next to a park and every arvo an ol woman or her hubby would take the lab also elderly into the park, he would walk around beside the fence lines and then return to them. But, that was before my mate moved in, Nugget would either sit in a low branch of a tree of on the back fence and every time that poor dog walked below, Nugget would launch himself down --quite often getting a short ride, other times bouncing off the dogs head, but always scaring that poor dog. Laugh or what!!

My dog loves his laser pointer and he's completely addicted. We keep it in a drawer in and end table. He walks over, twice a day and either points to the drawer with his nose or he taps it with his paw. And he will not give up until he gets it! He has us trained quite well. 😂

We have an overweight cat and its hard, sometimes, to get them to lose weight. Our kitty doesn't play. Seriously. He won't even chase a laser pointer. We engage with him, but he just doesn't want to do anything. He's 14 pounds, but our vet wants him to get down to 11, and no, we don't over-feed him, he just doesn't move unless he's forced to.

Years ago, we had neighbor with a 25-pound cat. Their old vet retired and the new one took a good look and diagnosed a benign abdominal tumor, which was found to have weighed 12 pounds when removed.

I've worked in animal shelter for years too... and I cannot understand why there are so many pups and kittens in these pictures?! Where I live it is mandatory for all animals in shelter to be sterilized to avoid them getting pregnant and not ending with even more homeless animals - and whatever you may think - this is the smart way.
