It's awful, isn't it? How can people write it without cringing?

One friend of mine will - they'll type things like "nod" to convey what they mean because they're used to communicating face to face with body language and texting is disorienting to them. That said, they type things like 'nod, shrug' not pretending we're in the same space or spend sentences describing their actions. And if they ever threatened to make contact with me with any part of their anatomy, like OP incel, they would be blocked and I would be warning our friend group. TL:DR; some people do but it's in moderation. This is like stage directions crossed with vicious harassment

Usually, it's in roleplay between two consenting parties. I do it, actually. But it's between characters, and I have a normal relationship with my rp partner outside of the roleplay. The asterisks are a more informal version, so *walks over* instead of the more formal rp style of "He walked over to you." It's really creepy and weird when you do it like this though-

Yes but usually its with someone you know and with permission. If someone does it out of the blue its bizarre. Like to my bf id say *holds tightly and rubs circles on back with hand* if i asked how he was and his answer was "having a bad day and could use a hug"

Actually it's pretty common now. Role-playing used the asterisk when on a computer to signify an action being taken. Since parents allowed children to be around older people role-playing online the kids picked up on it as a "common thing". So now they think they have to show all the actions being taken during a convo to portray as if they were there in front of you. Ngl it can be pretty cringe (apart from the friend having a bad day so you *hug* them type of notation)

It's creepy ASF... Do they live their entire lives out virtually and consider their delusions to be reality?? I understand roleplaying if both people agree to and are aware of it but to roleplay in your head and unwillingly include random people is like watching someone masturbate (in that it's something the general public should never be witnessing). They need to learn the difference between internal and regular dialogue...

It was common back in the days before emoticons and so forth were a thing on the Internet. It was how you conveyed tone. Some people just didn't get the memo that times changed (or think it's cute in some way). Now, mostly incels do it.

This has been common for quite awhile online. I remember doing it "ironically" around 20 years ago on AOL instant messenger. It was still pretty cringe though lmao. Not sure if there was ever a time it wasn't cringe. It only really seems to be acceptable on RPG servers. But as long as both people are into it, I don't see the problem.
