While most of us are naturally curious and suffer from more or less pronounced FOMO, meaning we have to know, see and hear everything others do, it’s not always best for us.
Some things are better left unknown or at least not put in the nightmarishly dim light like the facts shared on the “Creepy.fact” Instagram account. Followed by 231k followers, the page calls itself “the scariest account on Instagram” so we are about to see if that’s true. We wrapped up some of the most interesting posts shared on this page, so pull your seat closer, as you may want to leave your lights on.
The truth is... nothing beats the enduring appeal of things that fall under the categories of horror, grotesque, and mystery. Just look at the recent craze around gothic and horror TV shows (I refuse to believe there exists a person who hasn’t yet watched Tim Burton’s Wednesday) and serial killer documentaries (Netflix’ spin on Dahmer, anyone?!).
So to find out more about what it is that makes us tick when it comes to horror, we spoke with Lauren McMenemy, a south London-based writer of gothic-influenced folk horror who is currently working on a novel set in the world of the Victorian occult. And she was happy to share some very interesting insights into the topic!

I asked my counselor about these types of thoughts! She said they're completely normal.
I like to think they are happening to remind you NOT to do that
These are particularly annoying for me because I also suffer chronic suicidal depression.
They're called "intrusive thoughts", but "call of the void" sounds way more badass. I'm not mentally ill, it's just the CALL OF THE VOID
Ohmygods. It's normal. I'm not just losing my mind on a regular basis. I just sighed with relief.
My city has a bridge that’s famous for lots of things, one of them being people jumping. They have barricades, nets, phones for emergency counsellors and services and of someone looks like they’re going to climb the railing, you pick up a phone which immediately shuts down traffic, sends out a crisis team and a counsellor speaks over a loudspeaker. Still, people jump regularly. The thing is, most don’t go to visit the bridge with intention to jump. Most have no signs that they’d do this. It’s often a spontaneous act in the same sense as this post. Many have a sudden recognition that life is perfect at the moment & will never be better. They pull a Hairdresser’s Husband. -there’s a film about this bridge called “The Bridge” - https://letterboxd.com/film/the-bridge-2006/
“Humans are inherently morbid, whether they like to admit it or not,” Lauren McMenemy, a professional writer, journalist, and experienced writing mentor and coach told Bored Panda. “We are fascinated by death - by avoiding it, by cheating it, by embracing it, by understanding what comes next.”
“And I think the last bit is really why we love the creepy stuff; ghosts and skeletons and vampires and other creepy things help us to explore what comes after death. As for mysteries, well, who doesn't love a good mystery! As well as being morbid, we are also inherently curious creatures,” McMenemy explained.
I don't want you to feel bad. But this is the first documented instance of the entire universe aligning specifically for one person's birthday. Ever. In the history of mankind. But, yeah, try not to feel bad. Did you have cake?
Load More Replies...And this is creepy, how? And where was this setup visible, and for how long?
I saw that! I was on a ferry crossing the Sydney Harbour and we all got an amazing view!
Bloody huntsman. Those dinner plate sized ones creeping out from behind a picture on the wall do tend to create stained undies.
“Dinner plate sized ones” you will never see me in Australia

I mean it's good that the neighbours didn't ignore and did call for help, I'm sure both the police and the man they went to wouldn't have minded either
Depends on the spiders. White tails and red backs are not welcome. Daddy long legs I’m fine with until we see an egg sack (then we nicely take them outside). Funnel webs means we’re bombing the house.
Load More Replies...Oh f**k yes we do. Whoever doesn’t fear a giant a**e spider is getting terminated.

Load More Replies...You might wanna choose a getaway car with a tad more ooomph.
Load More Replies...It actually took more prep work then that. Whoever did it had called in a bomb threat to the bank and the bank managers house like a week before or something. So when the copped stopped them he told them it had been a legitimate threat and the bombs had gone off. Then he had a smoke bomb go off under the truck so the drivers got freaked out and he drove the van away leaving just the drivers and an empty smoke bomb in the middle of the street.
Damn, this guys got some skills. The poor robber, imagine you went through all of that hard work and someone just nicked your vehicle and got away.
Wait, what? A fake cop...got in the car & drove it away. The culprit & cash have never been found.
Load More Replies...I hope he at least shared that ill begotten money with people who needed it
McMenemy argues that it's what marks out humans and has helped us to grow and develop over generations and millennia. “We want to figure out the things we don't understand, and when we can't figure them out then some of us become obsessed by them.” McMenemy still remembers her own childhood obsession with the Bermuda Triangle, and who didn’t have one!
A number of the doctors in this time were butchers. And barbers.
Load More Replies...Doctor Robert Liston. He could amputate a leg in a matter of seconds. At a time when speed was essential to reduce pain and improve the odds of survival of a patient. But he was too fast for that one amputation and it's how he mades history.
Yes... amputation to cauterisation within a minute.. hard to imagine most people not going into severe shock though
Load More Replies...I don't get the 300% part. Say, if there was 10 people in the room and 3 died, that's 30% mortality rate. If all 10 people died, that's 100% mortality rate. Can't get above 100% if there's nobody left to die.
Load More Replies...3, 100% people, dead = 300% at least I think that's part of the joke.
Load More Replies...As they did not have anesthetics during this period, many doctors posted about how fast they could amputate a body part. The longer it took to amputate a leg or an arm, the higher the risk that the patient would die of shock from pain and bleeding out.
Load More Replies...So, right above this one was an ad. I wasn't paying attention to what number I'm on and thought it legitimately read "#7 Side hustles to help make extra cash" and simultaneously thought that's really creepy while wondering what's so creepy about it?

i have a hard time believing the smell wasn’t overwhelming. decomp isn’t a smell u can forget.
right conditions and the body mummifies instead. There have been cases of people dying at home and the body is found even years later

When asked whether horror as a genre is becoming more popular lately, McMenemy said that it definitely feels like it. “A large part of that is down to social media and the growth of self-publishing. The 'establishment' publishing houses still don't seem to like much in the way of horror - though serial killer fiction used to be considered horror, once upon a time! - but there is a huge online horror community, and they love to share discoveries,” the writer explained.
Happened in South Africa as well. Two Orcas called Port and Starboard turned up and after they killed and ate the livers of a few Great Whites, the sharks moved out. There were a few years with basically no sightings of the sharks.
If I'm not mistaken it took also a toll on the local economy which was widely focused on providing shark watching trips to tourists. (Edit: Not blaming the Orcas).
Load More Replies...apparently the orcas enjoy their livers. Tththththt with fava beans. https://www.livescience.com/killer-whales-attack-great-whites-video
You don't survive several mass extinctions without a pretty good survival response.
Forget about free W***y. Orcas are actually vile. They will eat the tongues out of humpback whales and play volleyball with seals.
I guess that's why they are called Killer Whales rather than Well Behaved Whales. :)
Load More Replies...The only explanation I can think of is fear. Idk though someone who knows more than me will probably correct me.
There are pods of orcas that specializes in preying on sharks in various parts of the world ( one group in south Australia, where I am..) They use a technique where they tip the shark upside down which disorients the shark making it unable to swim... Local companies that do cage diving tours have noticed the presence of orcas usually means that no great whites will be seen for weeks..... So the sharks definitely know when they're on the menu!!
Load More Replies...Orcas are way scarier than sharks! They’d eat Jaws for a snack
If they saw the c**p their laughter is used for now they would be turning in their graves.
Unless they were cremated. Then they'd be blown away.

True. But if we guesstimate that the audience members were between 10 and 60 years at the time, they would be around 80 to 130 years now so there are a lot of dead in the group

Load More Replies...Back then it was called "canned laughter". There is also "canned applause". I don't know if they still use those terms.
yup! although the "this was recorded in front of a live studio audience" disclaimer is supposed to make it feel funnier, because canned laughter feels fake.

He also should have been taking small paper cuts throughout his life to build up an immunity
Load More Replies...He also trained kittens to nibble on him. In the photo you can see what became of the mountain lion that attempted an assassination
"Well well well, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions.."
One does not become immune to most poisons. They just poison themselves slowly. Fact is, though, that most poisons that were used were not that poisonous, and most poisons that people ingested at the time (like lead) were not considered poisons. On the other hand, since venom is an active protein molecule, it can be inactivated by the immune system, and one can indeed build up immunity to many venoms. You can also, of course, develop allergies to the venom instead.
Yes! Like "Mad Hatter Disease" was from the Mercury that they used for felting hats for ≈100yrs before they figured it out. And how Queen Elizabeth used lead-based make-up which contributed to her death.
Load More Replies...Moreover, “Self-publishing has made it easier for people to share their own stories, too. And then we have the visual medium, and streaming services making access to horror much easier. I think the appetite has always been there, but it's just easier to get hold of that ‘fix,’” McMenemy explained.
We were also eager to find out what makes a book or a film particularly creepy. The academic answer to what makes things creepy, McMenemy argues, lies in the concept of the "uncanny", or the psychological experience of something as mysterious and creepy in a strangely familiar way.
Can someone please tell me what I'm looking at? What I see is a child's face in a sharks mouth. Lol
Its a dolphin but it looks creepy bc of lighting :))

Load More Replies...I've been to the one in Hollywood, and it's really interesting. Unfortunately, they have closed that site, and are preparing to open in a new place (much bigger). No opening date has been set True crime stuff aside - they have a room devoted to various coffins - from how early native Americans & colonizers made theirs, to current ones. This area included the tools, and various chemicals used for embalming. There's another area where they show photos families took with their dead relatives, plus the clothing and baby coffins that were used at the time. There is a whole room completely devoted to Charles Manson, and his lot. When it reopens, and you go - be prepared for extremely graphic true crime photos.
Do they also have exhibits about crypts? Cause then they'd be a mausoleum museum!
Load More Replies...I absolutely love true crime. Have for many, many years. HOWEVER. I find nothing more incredibly insensitive than crime scene photos being shown to the general public if the victim is in them. Hopefully, that is not what is happening here.
It's apparently also got early versions of embalming supplies & coffins
Load More Replies...Oh wow, I went to the Alcatraz East Crime museum in Pigeon Forge Tennessee! It was so cool, but I didn't sleep well that night!
There's one in New Orleans, too. Been there and it was absolutely fascinating.
There's also a museum of death in New Orleans on Dauphine st. Insanely graphic stuff there too.

These are colonies made up of hundreds or thousands of individuals called Zooids.
misleading, the large ones are colonies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrosome
ok but is anyone going to talk about the bottom left diver riding one like a cowboy?
Why does this image suddenly come to mind? Alaskan-Bu...f7d9c3.jpg
Pyrosomes, genus Pyrosoma, are free-floating colonial tunicates that usually live in the upper layers of the open ocean in warm seas, although some may be found at greater depths. Pyrosomes are cylindrical or cone-shaped colonies up to 18 m (60 ft) long,[2] made up of hundreds to thousands of individuals, known as zooids. Colonies range in size from less than one centimeter to several metres in length. They are commonly called "sea pickles".[3][4] Other nicknames include "sea worms", "sea squirts", "fire bodies", and "cockroaches of the sea (From wikipedia)
“It's the strangeness of the ordinary, the field where we are unable to distinguish between pleasure and displeasure and so we become anxious. Creepiness is about the uncertainty of a threat; you think there's something to worry about, but the signals aren't clear enough to send you into action,” the writer told us.
Ohhhh my god, this is like one of those many things that go on my “unusual and useless but still extreme phobias that I have” list.m Also sleep paralysis. If I ever get that, I am never sleeping again because just hearing stories about it creeps me the f**k.
I've had a couple of episodes of sleep paralysis, and they are disturbing. Both times I thought there was someone in my room but I couldn't move or make any noise.

Load More Replies...I've seen a case on "I Survived" with two sisters and I've heard of this guy above saying he did it too. I don't always lock the door right away but then I lock it. I take our two dogs outside to go potty at different times 2 am, 3 am, 4 am etc...I saw weird prints in the snow in 2022 (some have asked to see the photo''s and I'm still trying to figure it out. But I haven't forgotten!)When I go out side I walk around the back yard. Look at the stars etc.. But I go out and get this weird feeling. I hurry the dogs up ans get them in turn around and lock the screen. That has happened 2or3x. I went out the other night and I just wanted to get in the house. I ran to the door grabbed it open and told the dogs to get in. I was really scared. I 100% thought when I turned to lock the door something was going to be right there. Ok just went out and it's 2:30 am and felt fine!! Walked all around the yard!!
It's weird that people are more likely to lock their doors when they're not home than when they are. When you're gone, all an intruder can do is take your stuff. If you're home, they can take your life. Isn't that more worthy of being protected than your TV?
Think I'll just stick to pictures from the people who've been there and done that, thanks.
yeah same, I don't want to BECOME a skeleton on exhibit there
Load More Replies...I’ve actually done this and the caving is the main part of the tour/attraction, not the skeletons. Meaning, we didn’t “go through all of that” just to see human remains. It was to see the beautiful caving system and water! When I was there the tour guides were VERY respectful of the skeletons and asked the visitors to be as well; it was a very somber atmosphere in that section. (And it WAS roped off) Our tour guide described the “sparkling” skeleton as being very difficult to take photos of so that meant to them that she didn’t want to have her photo taken. It was actually fascinating and I left with a lot of respect for those people. All of that being said….I have little faith that tourists today haven’t ruined it at this point, which is so sad.
I’ve been there as well, great experience, but cameras were not allowed due to a tourist having dropped one on an artifact a few years back.
Load More Replies...From an archaeological point of view, it is quite smart to leave the remains on site, where, due to the bad accessability, they are improbable to be stolen or defaced and also will not be damaged by frequent visitors. The thrill of some persistent adventurers is just a site effect.
I just searched on Google and apparently they lead guided tours there. One skeleton has already been stepped on as they're not roped off.

Interestingly, the crystal maiden is actually a boy, previously thought to be female because of their small frame, and is sometimes reffered to as the crystal Prince instead.
Turns out they discovered that the Maiden was actually a young man. They now call him the Crystal Lad or Crystal Prince.
Meanwhile, “in books and film, this often takes the form of things just outside of our vision, or of familiar signals such as old and dilapidated houses, cobwebs, the unkempt and unloved. It results in that tingling down your spine, the goosebumps on your arms - you can't quite figure out what's going on, but you are intrigued…” McMenemy concluded.
Well it really depends on the context too. While it is cruel to “bet” on them in some sort of way, they also must have done something pretty gruesome to be on the death row

Load More Replies...The parasite is called Cymothoa exigua, or the tongue-eating louse. holy-shit-...394712.jpg
So we should introduce these to Alex Jones? Is that what you're saying?
There are so many weird parasites in the ocean. Look up the Greenland sharks. Like 90 percent live their lives with no eyeballs. Instead they have parasites that eat and replace their eye balls. Edit: spelling correction
If the fish dies the parasite swims out of the fish to find a new host. Luckily it doesn’t do that to humans
In general, animals fewer nerve endings per square inch/cm than humans. And parasitic animals tend to have ways to minimize the pain & impact. Like how mosquitoes inject saliva that numbs you and prevents your blood from clotting. Otherwise, they'd get noticed right away and squished.

Load More Replies...I saw the urban explorer's video in which he discovered her! Boy did he get a shock when he shone his torch into the abandoned room and saw her outline. A few weeks later it had gone viral and other people were going to check her out (and of course some took the opportunity to trash the place and throw stuff in the tank). Thanks to the publicity, though, she was ultimately removed and restored and her tank was cleaned out, and she's now the property of... I forget the name, but a crystal museum elsewhere in Australia.
Unfortunately, the shark, which had been perfectly preserved for a long time, is now deteriorating due to vandals breaking the glass and throwing stuff in the tank
Good news! She's been rescued and restored and is now on display elsewhere.
