These photos from r/thereifixedit show people making easy fixes with what they have at their disposal. Some are clever and even plausibly functional, while others are just downright silly.

The chicken doesn't look too happy about it.

The page has 81,000 members with a profile that reads, "MacGyver would be proud." It's a nod to the classic 1985 television series (rebooted in 2016) about Angus MacGyver, a man described as a "non-violent problem solver" who uses his keen handiness skills to get out of a jam. He could defuse bombs using paper clips and break zip ties using live wires.

It starts narrow enough at the bottom and gets wider as it goes up (talking about the upside down stool🙃), so it shouldn't be much of a problem. They do need to poke that corner that's sticking out back in, first.

You don't need to be at MacGyver level, but knowing how to properly fix something would be beneficial. For builder, author, and humanitarian Ian Anderson, begin with the small things around the house.

"Listen to your stuff, notice how things sound when they are working okay," Anderson told Apartment Therapy. "Touch things to notice how they feel. Sniff things; odd smells often mean something has changed, maybe a leak or something overheating.

Where I live, the height of escalator steps is 200mm, and the comparable height for stairs is 150-170mm. The difference between these height is quite a lot when walking up them, therefore it is common for out of service escalators to be fenced off.

Practice brings precision, a concept that likewise applies to being handy. Anderson urges doing trial runs on easily disposable scrap material.

"Grab an 8-feet length of two by four and mark the first three feet up with some square lines and saw it into slices like a bread loaf. Three feet later, you'll be cutting as square as a pro."

Based on the tile pattern & shapes, it looks like there used to be something there. Maybe some kind of post or pole. Hopefully this is only temporary. Pretty slick though.

Based on the stump, I'd say they originally just built around the tree, but it was later cut down. It's doesn't have to be temporary, though. If there were plans to remove it completely, they would have to rip up and remove a much larger section.

My father could drive a 40 feet long, 8 feet wide coach over small passes in the swiss alps or trough the tight streets of Paris, but sometimes had problems when there was a barrier of some sort near his toyota corrola. that car had so many small scratches all over the bumpers 😁

Thanks! Per wiki, "Along the plateau itself there continues to be a deep crack. Due to these cracks, the plateau will at some point fall down, but all the geological investigations have revealed that this will not happen in the foreseeable future, and geologists have confirmed the safety of the plateau." So assuming that's correct, none of the people in the picture are being dumb (except if you want to call the joke with the tape "dumb").

Old elevators are like old cars. They actually can still run perfectly and 100% safely, but need you to do a couple things first. Like jump up and down a couple times, or warm it up completely on a cold day.

    HTakeover

It wasn't called duck tape because of water resistance... it was called that because it was originally duck cloth (a type of linen) with adhesive on one side. It wasn't until later during the war effort that they applied a rubber coating that made it waterproof.

I still can't understand how these things can deliver different fuels through the same hose without contaminating it. Not only that but in Europe the diesel and petrol pumps have different-sized nozzles so you can't accidentally put diesel in a petrol vehicle.

    ƒιѕн
    Community Member

Diesel has it's own hose. Regular and E10 Gasoline has its own hose. E85 (Flex Fuel) has its own hose, E15 (2001 and newer models) has its own hose. And the minuscule amount left in the line from one customer to the next getting different octane ratings of regular gasoline will have no affect. At stations offering mid grade fuel the blends are done at the pump, as most stores only have tanks for regular and premium. caseys-666...c14116.jpg caseys-6660a2fc14116.jpg

Hey, I have stapled and taped many a skirt, dress, and pant leg hem, and safety pinned many a partially broken zipper (on the inside so it wasn’t blatantly obvious), just to get through the day before I could go home and properly repair it. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do to get by until you’re able to get it fixed the right way.

Worked with a guy who refused to buy new boots, they weren't as elegantly taped as these but they did earn his the moniker of Bootstrap Bill.

Um, I don't carry boot glue every time I step out the door. Do you? So, yeah, really, you do whatever you can until you can get home to make the permanent fix (as OP explained in the title, this is just to make it through the rest of the day).

I’ve used Wite-Out on keys when I’ve inherited a keyboard at work that had a lot of the letters worn off the keys, and had been told it would be a little bit of time before it could be replaced. I can put up with almost any inconvenience, especially if it is on the short side of temporary. Anything longer term still needs to have a reasonable end date, though, and please let me in on why the long wait. I’m a reasonable grown up who has worked in a lot of companies, and am perfectly capable of understanding about budgeting and paperwork and shipping issues, because I’ve been there done that, so don’t try to treat me like some kind of clueless newbie and give me some b******t excuse, OK?

Long ago, I had a housemate who was a freelance fantasy artist, very into horses, elves, SCA fighting, and the like. One year, for her birthday, we got her a sailplane ride from a local glider port. She *LOVED* it - even though the leading edge of one of the sailplane's wings had a speed tape patch on it. Soon after, she did a cover for Dragon Magazine with a young elf riding an Appaloosa Pegasus over some wooded hills or low mountains - and the leading edge of one of the horse's wings had a duct tape patch on it, if you looked closely. That would have been in the 1984 - 1989 time frame, if anyone wants to look it up.

Clear shipping tape, applied inside and out, would hold this together until you could get it replaced. This isn't a fix, more like a bandaid on a broken bone.

A bandaid meant not as a permanent fix, but only to get it to the “hospital”, where it can be properly fixed, with a minimum of further damage, by bona fide professionals who know what they’re doing..

Clearly not covering all the damage so any pressure on the uncovered parts would just cause it to cave immediately.

A pegasus crossing is the name given to a type of horse rider friendly light-controlled crossing in the UK. The button is at a suitable height for someone on horseback to press, and instead of a little green person, it's a little green person on a horse that tells you when to go. Our crossing are all named after creatures of some sort (Pegasus (OK, that one's mythical), toucan, puffin, pelican, zebra)

Motors in "dumb" (i.e. single-speed, single function) appliances like a clothes dryer use a capacitor-start, capacitor-run configuration with a centrifugal start switch which takes the start capacitor and winding out of circuit once the motor gets up to speed. I would surmise that the run capacitor has gone bad and forcing the start cap to remain in circuit is giving it enough capacitance to stay running. There are two separate thermal overload systems in virtually every dryer, and they are completely separate. If there were a problem with the heating element, its high-limit switch would open. If there were a problem with the motor, its internal thermal fuse would open (which is non-resettable).

Assuming this is a school, that clock is powered from a remote clock controller board so that all the clocks in the building are synchronized. It's not like all they had to do was change the batteries or something.

This can be made to look a lot cooler. File off the burrs on the soda bottle cap. Then fill it with hot glue. Add the bolt to the glue, and let the glue set. Then fix the new handle onto the drawer.

This is the front wheel of a motorcycle. I have absolutely no words for just how epically stupid this is -- unless they removed their front brake lever from the bars so they wouldn't be tempted to use them, then yeah actually a fine fix to limp home with, carry on.

They've fastened a hex key in place of the bolt. Hex keys are often made of O-1 tool steel, which has a yield strength of roughly 1500MPa, while a Grade 10.9 bolt has a yield strength of 940MPa. If they replaced an M10 bolt with a 6mm hex key, theoretically they would be equally strong (assuming a quality hex key). The part that's missing is the pad retainer shaft, which on older Tokico brake calipers was only held in with a cotter pin anyway.

When it's over 100 degrees outside and your condenser fan motor decides to die, you would do this too.

Connector is Apple's, if theirs keep breaking then any third party one will probably break too. Other option is replacing phone, which would be a waste if the phone otherwise still works.

Note: OP states that repairman would take two weeks from when they posted it. This was very much temporary but they had no other idea on how else to keep it together.

Stand by with fire extinguisher, and emergency services dialed in to hit "enter" as soon as you try this.

RATS! From the looks of it, it has been repaired many times and the rats keep chewing through it.
