Quick, close your eyes and think about the places that you’d love to visit one day, Pandas. Odds are that you instantly imagined those places, and that brought a smile to your faces. You might have thought about traveling across Iceland or Japan, or flying off to Paris, Rome, London, or New York. Or you might even be hyped about visiting some tiny town that practically nobody’s heard of. But let’s make things a bit more interesting, shall we?

What are some places that you’d avoid like the plague? It’s a tad more difficult, isn’t it? While you’re pondering this (possibly in front of a gigantic map of the world on the wall), have a scroll and read some of the thoughts that members of the r/AskReddit community shared on this very question.

Someone asked them about the countries they’d never visit, and these internet users were very candid about where they’d hate to end up. You’ll find their opinions and arguments below.

misstisco I don't think it's so much prejudice but more of a safety concern. You could get arrested or attacked for not following female cultural traditions in a Muslim-popular country even if you are not Muslim. I'm also a woman.

There were a few things at the top of most redditors’ minds. These internet users explained that they’re worried about safety, the low quality of life, and a country’s lack of respect for human rights.

Nobody wants to risk their lives unnecessarily. And some commenters felt like they’d be doing just that. But it’s not all based on just opinions and hearsay.

I so wish I could visit Russia, I just don’t see it being safe for an American to visit anytime in the next few decades. The situation seems a bit North Korean, where an American visitor will just be framed for a crime if the government thinks they’d be useful as a bargaining chip.

Folks Online Point Out 35 Of The Most Disappointing Places They’ve Visited Or Would Never Want To Visit North Korea

IASIP_Official said:

If I weren't an American, then I totally would for the mere fact that it is a glimpse into a whole other world.

But, since I'm an American, I don't want to end up as a bargaining chip for nuclear arms.

bromosa_mimosa added:

You shouldn't visit even if you were NOT American.

North Korea on paper is a country, but in reality it is a criminal organization. The goal is money. All of this other weird shit like wacky rules and nukes is just to keep people in line and nations on their toes. The goal is money for the top people.

Visiting North Korea helps them achieve these goals. You perpetuate human suffering for these "fringe" trips.

Don't be afraid. We're actually a very friendly country full of nice people and not everyone has guns. My dad did because he was a marine, and a friend does because he hunts, but that's it; no one else that I know has guns. Edit: I feel the need to clarify my comments above. Further down the thread I'm called naive and that I can't know if the people in my life carry guns. I'm 62 years old and have lived around the country at various times through my younger years, and I've met alot of people and experienced alot of life. When it comes to guns, I'm not naive. I know that we need gun control, I know that there are too many guns out and about, and too many idiots carrying them. But, many of us are trying to change that. The people that I mention above were/are gun owners. My now deceased dad occasionally took us target shooting and was always responsible when around guns. He taught us how to be safe around them and he kept them locked up. My friend locks up his rifles, and he lives alone. He only uses them for hunting when it's deer season. The hunting is something that I don't like and it bothers me. But I also know what a careful, responsible person he is. As far as knowing if other people have guns, you're right...I can't know everything, but I do know that my other family members and my friends are gun-free.

Same here - but not because of the American people, I have friends from over there, they're really nice. I'm actually way more afraid of your police officers and the weird customs around them. I'd be so afraid one of those legal criminals could shoot my boyfriend (who is not white) because he did something that triggered a cop.

To be completely honest, that is a far more valid concern than being afraid to visit due to the potential for gun violence. Gun violence against strangers is very rare, but racism...it's a c**p shoot. A majority of people are really nice, but we have some bad eggs too. Some officers are really nice and good people, but some aren't.

As an American, I completely understand this sentiment, but statistically it's unlikely to happen. We are a huge country and there are many places that are really safe and welcoming and there are plenty of areas that are not. Do research, ask around and I know that there's somewhere that will welcome foreigners from your area with open arms.

You're missing out. Been to the US several times. Some City Trips. But also several coast to coast Road Trips with my wife. Met wonderful people along the way. Also amazing landscapes. Yes, there were some strange folks. But that you could find anywhere. Miami Beach and SF did have a bit more homeless folks than average. But that was more of a sad affair than a dangerous one. And maybe next time I wouldn't stay in the cheapest Motel 6 in rural Michigan again. Besides that we always felt safe. Not just that. We loved it. Several weeks on the road. Hotels and Motels, Big cities and small towns. Urban areas and countryside. We had a blast. That's why we came back so often. (I still try to contact Joe the truck driver again from around Fresno/Bakersfield, a great chap... sadly lost his e-mail shortly after our Route 66 trip in 2007)

The last few times I went to the US from Canada DHS and ICE were incredibly threatening and invasive, and I didn't even have any luggage. The psychopaths in their border guard organizations are there to dissuade anyone who isn't a white cis gendered Christian from entering the country, and most Americans have no idea they're doing it. Walking the streets in an American city you might worry about random violence like shootings and muggings, but the real dread comes from the guaranteed threats, intimidation, legal theft, groping, and powerlessness you will experience at their land borders. I have no plans to ever return. Seriously, you're all guarded by batshit crazy Trumpists.

I went to the US as a teen doing work and travel and I loved it. Beautiful cities, gorgeous landscapes and friendly people. That said, there are other countries where you could say the same but that don't also have the problems that the US has (gun control, healthcare costs, the Trump phenomenon etc). It isn't at the top of my list for places to go to again.

My step father is retired law enforcement, and he does not own a firearm either. My friend in the navy, does not own a firearm. Are there shootings in my area? Yes there are. America is a complicated one It really depends on where you go, sadly the more south you go certain areas depend on race rather or not they are safe. But that also applies to big cities Personally as someone born in Massachusetts but moved to upstate new York I've never left the east coast I'd say honestly and truly though my favorite spots to visit were the cape and new Hampshire

There's a lot of reasons to defend against stereotypes: this is not one of them. Our education system is very much to blame for that, people like to defend their constitutional right by screaming "It's the 2nd amendment!" But those people need to look up the definition of amendment, and realize just like an amendment was made to ban alcohol, another amendment was made to legalize it again. I've gotten to the point where I can't defend my own country when you look at the statistics and read the news. This is why we're all looked at as being ignorant and cast with a broad stroke, it's just ridiculous at this point.

Some states even outlaw abortion for a tubal Pregnancy! And our health care is sub-pare and exorbitantly expensive. Most cities are not walkable as every city has been designed to accommodate cars. Public transportation is nonexistent in most cities and our train system is antiquated and expensive. We do have stunning scenery and nice people but it isn’t worth the risks. It's not a safe country to say the least. The number of gun owners that own more than 3 firearms is crazy, the number that own more than a dozen is insane. To many gun owners either fail to secure their firearms or don't secure them at all and they het stolen from unlocked vehicles and home break ins or kids get them and shoot themselves or a sibling or friend or a teacher. No, my country is not safe no matter what anyone else has to say and I'm looking at news headlines about 10 dead 10 injured by a shooter during a festival today.

I live in America. I have several guns. I am licensed to carry them as well and am a very good shooter. Most of the people I know (Oklahoma) hunt so handling guns safely is commonplace. On the flipside of things, America is HUGE compared to most European countries. So when you think of those statistics also think about the fact that you can drive for a few hours and be in a whole different country over there. Here, you might make it through one of our states. Every state here has its own unique culture and land types and is probably one of the few countries where you could visit an ENORMOUS amount of things and still never see everything! Yes we have a lot of issues like any other country but try to remember how absolutely huge the country is when using stats to compare to other countries. I mean the whole country of England is about the size of Alabama state. France is smaller than Texas. The entirety of Europe is barely bigger than the U.S.A.

Most Americans are very friendly. Even those of us in the south (I'm in Houston, TX). There is so much to do and see. We're young compared to European countries, but we have unique and different types of things to explore. Most people don't have guns and most of those that do aren't carrying them around. They use them for hunting or target practice. Yes, some have a concealed carry license. The ones who have guns illegally, with no license and no training? Thugs, criminals, etc. Most cities have an area even the locals avoid, but overall our cities are safe. Visit places during the day, early evening; don't go places you are unsure of,don't know or feel uncomfortable about; travel with others. The same considerations you'd make in any new place.

American here. USA is a pretty safe place to visit. The news overplays the bad stuff. There are a few places I would not care to hang out but I could say that about several of the other countries I have visited. I'm in my 60s. I have never been mugged / attacked / shot at / whatever else you are imagining would happen.

America seems safer if you stay out of the big cities. There are exceptions, but unfortunately the things that make the newscast are the shootings, not all of the good things that happen.

I don't know anyone with a gun (in Seattle). Im Sure some people have them. I hear guys talking about hunting trips sometimes. But honestly, if people have them here, they don't mention it, don't carry them visibly and I'm sure most are kept locked in gun safes. Yes you hear about shootings daily around the country. I've never felt unsafe here, in any state, even in a bad neighborhood after dark, alone. I'm a woman. I've never been in danger due to a gun here. Just my quick take.

The USA is ranked 64th out of 172 countries and territories for violent deaths per 100,000. There is a lot of under reporting by many countries and many others ranked higher (eg with lower death rates), have a lot of violent deaths which are labelled as judicial executions (such a Middle Eastern governments killing adulterors and reporters). So the USA is probably just mid league and killings are concentrated in particular groups. Feel free to travel to America but just don't join a gang. Alternatively, avoid half of the world.

It's so funny how Americans watched "Taken" once & they're like "omg I would never travel abroad! It's so dangerous! You'll get trafficked!" & sure... that's a possibility everywhere. (Probably more likely here in the US tho) But you're way more likely to get shot while at a party.. at a restaurant or night club.... at church...sitting in school.. or celebrating the Chinese new year.... or even if you're laying in bed minding your own business & the cops decide to start blindly shooting into your home... I'm an American btw... but I cannot tell you how many ppl I know who think like this. My husband being one of them. It's funny that he thinks he'd be trafficked though.

Seriously way less random shootings than you think. As long as you are going to shady areas of big cities... since that's probably where you'd go... a big city. We have very little crime in little towns.

However, different countries are more dangerous for different people. For instance, South Africa is considered to be the most dangerous country in the entire world for solo female travelers. Barely 25% of women in the country reported feeling safe walking alone at night.

In second place is Brazil while Russia is in third place. Mexico is the fourth most dangerous place for female travelers while the Dominican Republic is in fifth, according to the World Population Review.

Meanwhile, the top 10 safest countries for women are Spain, Singapore, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Portugal, Croatia, Canada, and Poland.

Folks Online Point Out 35 Of The Most Disappointing Places They’ve Visited Or Would Never Want To Visit Somalia

prplx said:

Just read the is government travel advisory:

If you decide to travel to Somalia:

Review your personal security plan and visit our page on Travel to High-Risk Areas. Avoid sailing near the coast of Somalia and review the Live Piracy Report published by the International Maritime Bureau. Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney. Discuss a plan with loved ones regarding care/custody of children, pets, property, belongings, non-liquid assets (collections, artwork, etc.), funeral wishes, etc. Share important documents, login information, and points of contact with loved ones so that they can manage your affairs if you are unable to return as planned to the United States. Find a suggested list of such documents here. Establish your own personal security plan in coordination with your employer or host organization (if you are traveling on business) or consider consulting with a professional security organization. Develop a communication plan with family and/or your employer or host organization (if you are traveling on business), so that they can monitor your safety and location as you travel through high-risk areas. This plan should specify whom you would contact first, and how that person should share the information. Identify key sources of possible assistance for you and your family in case of emergency, such as the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, FBI, the State Department, your employer (if traveling on business), and local friends/family in the high-risk area. Be sure to appoint one family member to serve as the point of contact with hostage-takers, media, U.S. and host country government agencies, and members of Congress if you are taken hostage or detained. Establish a proof of life protocol with your loved ones, so that if you are taken hostage, your loved ones can know specific questions (and answers) to ask the hostage-takers to be sure that you are alive (and to rule out a hoax). Leave DNA samples with your medical provider in case it is necessary for your family to access them. Erase any sensitive photos, comments, or other materials from your social media pages, cameras, laptops, and other electronic devices that could be considered controversial or provocative by local groups. Leave your expensive/sentimental belongings behind.

Folks Online Point Out 35 Of The Most Disappointing Places They’ve Visited Or Would Never Want To Visit Really surprised that Papua New Guinea hasn’t made the list. It’s not Somalia but it’s not far off either.

A friend worked there briefly and spent the whole time in a heavily guarded gated complex (home), heavily guarded gated compound (work), or being escorted by armed guard in an armoured vehicle. He had to go through a number of debriefing sessions to adjust to the freedoms of normal life when he got back.

That’s a big no thanks from me

In today's world? A whole bunch. Even if I wore the local garb and had male escorts I would not feel safe and I would not enjoy my time surrounded by animals who only see me as a sex toy. As much as I would LOVE to see what these areas hold, war torn countries, violent countries, places with large cartel presence, countries with a lot of corruption, countries who aren't exactly friends with my country....

I love traveling and I love exploring but I also love being whole and alive.

Folks Online Point Out 35 Of The Most Disappointing Places They’ve Visited Or Would Never Want To Visit I follow a lot of travel groups, and whenever someone asks for the worst travel experience, an overwhelming amount of people always say Egypt.

One deleted user said:

One youtuber said they seemed so paranoid and disorganized in Egypt. They confiscated his drone, but he had to instruct them to make some sort of receipt system so he'd have a way to get it back. They were just putting it in a plastic bag, with no sticker or marking, or anything. Nobody knew the rules, if there were any. He had been to a lot of African and other countries, and never had such a disorganized and hostile time entering a country.

We fled into smaller villages, to wind down. Best decision. I would still recommend India. Just maybe not for your first abroad trip. :)
