An American journalist in Russia, Alec Luhn, shared a photo of noodles and an egg to show how cold some parts of the country get in winter.
Taken in Novosibirsk, a city in the southwestern part of Siberia, the picture shows noodles and a cracked egg seemingly frozen in mid-air after the temperature dipped to -40 degrees in the region just a few days ago.
Pretty soon, people all over the country started posting brutal and beautiful photos too. From frosty forests to guys enjoying ice cream in shorts, here are some that have caught Bored Panda's attention!

I wish it was colder here. Its 67 degrees Fahrenheit and I have all the windows open and I'm hot. It is unseasonably warm here right now. Usually it is in the 40's January 1st. I wish I lived somewhere where there were more cold months than hot.
Be careful what you wish for! I wish it was 67 degrees here in central NM. I have to use a tank heater for my horses' water, and a bird bath heater for the outside birds. I love HOT weather....90 is perfect! We live at 7000 feet in the mountains.

Yuliya Shipitsina, a woman from Novosibirsk who captured gorgeous frost on a window, also acknowledged that the weather leading up to New Year didn't bless the region with warmth. However, she told Bored Panda that the locals are used to it and aren't intimidated by it. "In cold weather, it is better to dress like a cabbage so that there are several layers of clothing. It will help to keep warm. But sometimes [you don't need anything at all]—if you go to a Russian sauna, the best option is the nearest snowdrift."
"This is Siberia, baby!"
Hoo-man wins "awesome dog-owner of the Russian winter award" - or something along those lines.
Doggo is obviously used to it. Mine would refuse to let you put that outfit on it and then refuse to leave the house lol.

Doubt he needs to in that weather. Panting is usually for cooling off or stress

"Our winters are very cold, and in the last few days the temperature dropped to -42° C, which is rare even here," a company spokesperson told Bored Panda. "In such [conditions], it is dangerous to even inhale air with your lungs; you need to use special waterproof wetsuits and warm EVA boots. Of course, it's still very cold, but after 5 minutes of active rowing, it gets hot."
I remember this growing upin the UK in the 60's, also on the bedroom walls ...
Growing up skiing at Hoodoo, Oregon, waking up in the camper the windows were a frosty delight
Most of Russia has a continental climate, with long, cold winters and brief summers. However, since the country is so huge, there is a wide range of summer and winter temperatures. January temperatures are in the range of 6°C (45 °F) on the southeastern shore of the Black Sea, but things up north can get pretty crazy. For example, in 1974, the record low temperature of -71°C (-96 °F) was recorded at the northeast Siberian village of Oymyakon, the lowest temperature in an inhabited region ever. In many areas of Siberia, the soil never thaws for more than a foot.

Beautiful to look at as a movie set, but in reality it would be a nightmare. I mean, the scene only shows snow, but you know doggone well that roof had to have been leaking before winter, so let rain leak in during the other three seasons. I shudder to think of the cost to repair the roof alone. Try to imagine the water damage and the mold and mildew it causes. Then OMG, trying to salvage as much of that beautiful—-and expensive—-furniture as possible! You just know it would never be the same as before the damage; warped wood flooring, walls, ceilings, molding, and furniture, mold and mildew damage, ruined carpet, paintings, and upholstery, yikes! (Sorry to put a damper on it, but when I see stuff like that in movies, my mind just “goes there”. I start becoming practical and calculate repair costs and the time needed to make them).
If ever you want to NEVER see cold again--watch that film. I was very upset to see that historic and beautiful home totally torn asunder by idiot politics. SCARY!

As an Upstate New Yorker, I'm not really a fan of the cold however, this pic is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
On the one hand, I lived in Boston for a while and it kind of ruined snow for me while I was there, on the other hand, WHY are you living in a place you are guaranteed to hate half the year?!?

The alien ghosts rose from the freezing abyss to conclude the icy devastation they've wrought upon the earth, rendering her even more helpless than she'd ever been and nudging her further to her inevitable demise. "Soon...", they icily whispered among themselves, "soon, she'll be oursss...."

Someone made sleep sounds video using frozen bodies of water sounds. It sounds very much like a metal cable was tweaked. So interesting!
That's really gorgeous It doesn't look like it here, but I've seen cases where people did this kind of thing using boiling water. I know it seems really obvious to anyone with a brain, but DON'T DO IT THAT WAY.
I lived in Finland one winter and for the process to work you must use boiling water. It’s a chemical reaction. The extreme heat to cold is what causes it to turn into powder.
That's what I understood to be the case. Given the temperatures occuring in Russia boiling water would be no concern. If you werent sure then of course throwing boiling water over your head is stupid.
Load More Replies...BTW that boiling water freezes faster than cold water is called the Mpemba effect. (Many people misinterpret this to cold water boiling faster than hot, which is not true.) https://www.nature.com/articles/srep37665
I heard that if you want to estimate the temperature in Siberia, you spit and then count how many times the frozen ball bounces when it hits the ground.
Not a fan of spitting but this is an exception I would 100% get in on

"When you try hanging your clothes to dry at -40C"
I'd love to put the blouse above the jeans, and a pair of boots sticking out of the bottom, and a big furry hat, and stood the whole thing next to a snowman, like they were chatting.
When you hang the washing to dry outside in cold weather, first it freezes solid and then it dries! I remember getting out of trousers that were so stiff with snow and ice that you could leave them standing like this after playing outside in the snow when I was a kid. Happy days!
Great pics! I grew up in New Zealand and once I snapped the arms off a shirt that was on the clothes line, it really was that cold. 😃

Portland, OR doesn't ever get super cold but it gets freezing rain every few years which is like the whole city suddenly looks like this. At least they are sincere and recognize their unwanted contribution, Russians are animal loving people. in the West we do it just the same and it is hidden.
But on the other hand, DNA research has helped convict many murderers. I agree though that 90% of animal experiments are pointless and unethical.

I'm surprised there can be fog when it's that cold. I figured the moisture in the air would freeze immediately and would sink instead of stay suspended in the air
"Walking the dog in -43C weather, such a pleasure"
I can't tell if the doggo is angry at the cold or pleased to be showing off his snazzy sweater.
Doggo NEEDS booties. If it is used to walking indoors it's feet are not used to the cold. It is like you being used to walking barefoot in the house, then having to go out and walk in the snow.
What I'm wondering about is the paw pads. We're repeatedly told not to take dogs out on hot tarmac, but how cold is too cold for their paw pads? Cold burns are still serious.

I live in a cold climate, although it doesn't often get as low as -40 C any more. You make plans for it ahead of time. You have a different set of tires put on your car in October, you have a different wardrobe that includes boots, gloves, hats, and a winter coat, your house is designed for it with insulation and heating. Moving from the bed isn't a problem because the house thermostat is set at 21.5º C.
