Crafting a snappy and witty comeback that’ll grab everyone’s attention is no easy feat. However, all that effort and comedic instinct are worth it—if it’s on the internet, it might just live on in the digital hall of fame in screenshot form. Who knows, you might see peeps sharing your comeback for years and years. Ego boost? Yes, please!

One place where these legendary testaments to people’s wit are documented is the ‘Clever Comebacks’ page on Twitter. Having been founded just a few short months ago, in February, it’s grown to have nearly 67k followers since then.

We’ve collected the crème de la crème of clever comebacks for you to enjoy, dear Pandas, so go on and have a look at them below. Hopefully, some of these will inspire you to greatness the next time you need a snappy one-liner. Don’t forget to upvote the ones you enjoyed the most and let us know what the very best comeback you’ve ever said or written was in the comments.

I reached out to British musical stand-up comedian and comedy writer Ariane Sherine to talk to her about comebacks, the role that courage plays in comedy, and how we can overcome our fear of being judged whether on-stage or on-screen. Have a read below for Bored Panda's interview with the humor expert.

There are only three companies in the USA that are allowed, by government regulation, to produce insulin. Talk to your government.

My daughter is a Type 1 diabetic, she was born in the Netherlands and now lives in Ireland; she gets all her supplies for free, as it should be. Type 1 diabetes isn't a lifestyle choice.

Isn't what the mask hoarder is doing a prime example of capitalism? This what our pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, insurance providers, and pharmacies do on a daily basis? Holding resources necessary to life hostage for ridiculous amounts of money. The fact that the FBI raided this guy (they should have, btw) is an admission by the US government that the US healthcare system is in fact criminal activity veiled as capitalism.

You see they won't do anything to the insulin manufactures because they get a portion of the money. This guy was trying to make money under the table which is the only reason they cared. Again people they don't care about you

Too right. And Noone ever distrusts them. I've watched for the last 10 years the unfolding of the opioid epidemic created by pharma. Doctors get huge kickbacks by prescribing them en masse. The creator of Fentanyl just got jailed for building up a pyramid scheme with doctors to sell his drug, which was designed strictly for end stage cancer patients, it ended up becoming standard meds for a sore toe or PTSD. Pharma pushing drugs onto the population has caused a an epidemic of opioid addiction that's affected just about every country and family. Don't even get me started on ADD/HD meds and the flow on effect of that and meth users.

Fun fact: insulin is dramatically more potent/effective when manufactured in 0 gravity. If costs go up much more, it may be cheaper to go to space and make it!

Insulins are technically biologics, a label used to describe drugs or therapies derived from living cells and organisms. But policymakers in Washington didn’t have a framework for regulating biologic drugs and their copycat counterparts, biosimilars, until 2010, when Congress laid out the start of that framework in its Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act. As part of that law, Congress said insulin — which had previously been regulated like any other drug — would be regulated as a biologic beginning in 2020. Congress left the logistics of that transition up to FDA — and the agency’s transition plan wasn’t as flexible as generic makers had hoped, at least for encouraging a generic insulin. Related: Senators press insurers for reams of pricing and rebate info on insulin The FDA’s policy decrees that any insulin application that’s still pending before the agency on March 20, 2020, will be rejected. Any applicant would then have to start over and reapply [STAT news]

"Courage is hugely important," British comedian Ariane told Bored Panda about its role in comedy. "The more courageous you are, the more you'll shed your inhibitions and the greater the chance that you'll say something shocking and funny."

According to the comedy expert, the element of surprise is "essential" to comedy. And more often than not, "there's an edge or a hint of cruelty" in most jokes and comebacks. "If you're timid and careful, then you're probably not going to want to offend people with comebacks and will be polite rather than witty," she said.

Would it be so hard for U.S. cops to just stop killing people for a while? I saw all 8 Police Academy films and nobody ever got killed. I feel everyone lost their way in the argument. Whether you're black white Hispanic indian Asian or whatever, what happened here was about POLICE BRUTALITY. The killer was a cop. And the victims of this behaviour are all colours and races, very well documented too. We gotta stop compartmentaling these behaviours as racism and start looking at what it really is - authority with the power of God in thier hands knees and hearts.

Cops go to cop school. Cops get a job at a cop place. Cop place trains cop. Cops protect themselves from criminals that have guns and weapons. Cop shoots in self defense after warning criminal multiple times to stop. Cop is deemed ''racist'' or ''brutal''. Perhaps non-cop peoples should do some research to understand this. Perhaps cops schools and cop training cop places should redo cop training. I dunno. But stop calling it racist.

The anonymity that the internet and social media provide can be a double edged sword: it can help people feel freer because they'll take criticism less personally, but it can also empower bullies to spew hatred. Comedian Ariane agreed that anonymity is a tool and everything depends on how we use it.

"We feel freer to say things we wouldn't say in real life, but that also means we're more likely to be hurtful. I think the same is true of being on stage for comics—when we're holding the mic we feel free to dispense with niceties," she gave us her take on the relationship between anonymity, honesty, and comedy.

True ,but: If EVERYONE changes EVERYTHING (no meat, not 30% less, no car, plane, train, no heat....) that would still be only 29% according to this source. Oxfam on the other hand published a study that claims that the 1% richest individuals are responsible for double the CO2 than the poorest 50%. So... most people can reduce CO2 all they want.. the richest 1% will still screw us all

All 100 of those corporations are involved in petrol, energy or mining. Are they polluting for the hell of it, or because of consumer demand? Of course it's much more nuanced than simply a "moral failing on the part of individuals", but consumers must shoulder the blame to some degree. Less consumption + more renewables = less pollution

But how much of an impact will 'your part' have? It's not just the top 100 corps. It's all corporations, the super-rich, governments. If all the individual consumers made those three changes, would it reduce emissions by 1%, or even a 10th of 1%? And it's all very well to say vote with your money, but the research burden is huge, and the invisibilty of business-to-business supply chains mean that it's often impossible to see the true cost. We need legislation, taxation, and carbon and emissions permits. Yes, the cost gets passed on to consumers, but it allows us to make rational decisions as individuals and as a society. "Oh, so the true cost to the environment of an international flight is £3,000 per seat, not £300? welp, let's skip that meeting." "Oh, so electricity generated by solar and wind now costs one-tenth as much as electricity from that coalburning power station? Guess we don't need that station anymore."

    Kevin Erdős–Bacon
    Community Member

I agree with everything you said except for the impact of individual consumers. If all individuals made those changes then yes, it would have a very big impact. Those corporations are polluting because of consumer demand. For example, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, meat (excluding seafood) and dairy production = 14.5% of greenhouse emissions. If everyone makes that change, boom, a substantial drop in emissions, not "a 10th of 1%". Automobile travel = 15% of greenhouse emissions. If everyone used there car half as much, for example, that's a 7.5% reduction in global greenhouse emissions, even more so if switching to electric vehicles. Smart thermostats will also have an impact to some degree, but switching to renewables as you mentioned more-so.

We're technically still in an ice age. Ice caps on the poles indicate ice ages. Total global freezes are called glaciations.

Like everything else, what and how much you can do is often (if not always) determined by your resources. If you ain't got the money, you can't do what the 'haves' say you should.

Bored Panda was also intrigued to find out how best not to freeze up when you're going on-stage as a comedian or if we're paralized for fear of being rejected before posting a joke or a witty comeback. "Alcohol! Only joking. I guess it's to remember that fear of rejection never got anyone anywhere," Ariane quipped and then pointed out that we have to focus on what our end goals really are. "All the comics you admire have overcome fear of rejection. So do you want to make people laugh or not?"

Comebacks, from cool and clever to lame and drab, are nothing new to us. Previously, I’d also spoken with comedian Ariane about the art of the comeback, as she's an insider in the world of comedy, timing, and shutting down hecklers.

Speed, according to Ariane, is where the essence of comebacks lies. Without it, our attempts at humor can fall flat. “I think the most important thing with comebacks is speed. Even if the joke isn't a total zinger, people will be impressed by your quickfire response," she told Bored Panda in an earlier interview.

Listen to the individuals who basically said that woman are asking for it because of the way they dress, and that if they show skin they can’t be offend when men look. Why should women have to cover our body’s because men can’t decide to keep it in there pants?. If women want to dress comfortably that is not reason to objectify them, instead men should be taught to respect women and to maybe I don’t know, not stare at them.

As long as he dnt touch u or try to harass u it's completely within his rights to look at u showing ur boobs n butt off if YOU choose to dress like that 🤔

You can't "boost" your immune system. You can prevent it from not functioning normally, but you can't make it work better by choosing a special diet or training. That said, to make it funtion normally, exercise and a healthy diet are required.

What do you think a gym is for? It is for training your body by doing a "weaker" exercise. For example, if you were training to run a marathon you would run a 1/4 marathon, then a 1/3 marathon, and so on. That way I will be strong enough to run the marathon.

However, unlike us mere mortals, most stand-up comics actually come prepared. They’ve got an entire repertoire of comebacks at the ready, just in case they need to shut down a heckler or fire off a rapid put-down or two. What’s more, comedians tend to share these comebacks with one another.

You know the bible never mentions the word, "Apple." Early Christian art depicted it as a fig. They believe Apple came into play because when translated "malum" means evil and "malus" is apple.

There are lots of studies using zip codes or more precisely some defined areas that can predict your access to healthcare, education and so on more precisely than your higher degree. And not only in the USA, but in all developed countries. Even with free university and free healthcare, your living area can affect how you access these facilities, in a very lower range, though.

usually, the immediate locality in which you were raised was more than somewhat dependent on the wealth your parents had. So, the important predictor is the wealth. especially when it's generational wealth.

Whaaat? Omg America, why. In Europe it is totally not relevant. I mean anywhere where public education has good, high standards. You can always be someone if you just learn, work, expand your knowledge. No matter if you are poor, or rich, born in good or bad family. If you are lazy nothing will help you.

In my dad's class in medical school, out of 100 students ONLY three were from "wealthy families." But the vast majority of them were veterans. That class, of 1954 had over twelve women, and more coming up the next year. My dad grew up on a small farm in central Texas.

That class of 100 had over 12 women, so 13 women? What a poor number. Bet it had one token black or brown guy too. Not sure what point you were trying to make. If your dad didnt think the majority of the class were wealthy then I suspect he was unaware of how fortunate he actually was. Wealth is relative

Ariane highlighted the fact that you grow your emotional resilience with experience as a comedian. Over time, you get better at delivering comebacks and how quickly you can do so. “You don't want to give them the chance to reject you—you've got to get in there first with a funny insult!" she said about the dynamic between the performer and the audience if the latter’s feeling a tad cheeky and wants to have a go at ruining the show.

Existing human beings have rights. You cannot force women to give up their rights for a collection of cells that might, if everything goes exactly right, become a human being. If you do force women, and they die from pregnancy or delivery complications, then you've committed murder.

Listen I am pro choice, abortion is only legal in the first 12 weeks (I think) and at that stage the fetus has just started developing and has no thoughts or emotions. It is just a cluster of cells and terminating it inst actually causing it any harm and might be saving it from a difficult future.

If you feel like you’re not up to snuff, you really should draw on others for inspiration when it comes to good comedy. Whether it’s reading through tons of screenshots of clever comebacks that you find on the net or watching reruns of your favorite comedians (both are great).

However, British comedy pro Ariane pointed out that you shouldn’t be stealing original stand-up material for your own shows. It’s fine if you’re doing it to impress your friends, but there’s a certain code of honor that pops up when you start earning money for your jokes.

I shall refer you to the Preamble of the US Constitution, which thanks to animated educational films I was subjected to as a child I can recite verbatim: We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, and to provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America. It may be a single sentence, but it's 100% collective in nature.

Lots of countries have given the vaccine to a huge part of the population, and yet thier covid numbers are growing, and people are still dying. In a few years time we will reflect on either the good or the harm that has come off this. From the start this whole covid issue has smacked of corporations taking advantage of this terrible time. It's only local and small business that have failed worldwide, while big corp has made a ton of money. Why would the pharma industry be any different? They make a killing on people being unwell. How many types of vaccine? So few companies and it Is Not Free. We will all across the world be paying for this. Not one GVT a has yet said how we will, as the taxpayer foot this massive bill for all the govt assistance we've had during covid Ooh ouch! It's gonna hurt

As with any virus, you can still spread it without catching it. I work with autistic anti-vaxxers, who sneeze on me, constantly put their fingers in their mouth and up their nose (and sometimes MY nose), and occasionally lick random things in public places (This is not a slam on autistic people. I'm not saying that all autistic people do these things. My job is to work with the individuals who need help with certain behaviors). I will totally be wearing a mask until the virus is under control. Even though I'm vaccinated, I could still infect people.

To be fair, most bk's are franchises, they charge such high franchise fees, make profit off the land, equipment, force their franchisees to buy their food of course, supplies etc., there's not enough left for much pay for employees. Corporations were meant to be short term, project based, to raise capital and then dissolve. They are literally not in the constitution. They need to end.

Boohoo, boohoo. I made $7.50 at BK and $7.35 at Sonic. I now make $5. House is bought and paid for. All the internet/TV/data we can use. No government assistance. It's a dirty word called "budgeting". The *federal* minimum is perfectly fine where it is. I could see an argument to raise it in some states/areas but not everywhere. Mandating financial education is something I definitely support since I feel that's the real problem.

I'm not against science, but I don't think you can convince someone whose reasoning is based on religion with science theory... The 1st thing they would ask is, how can you prove that uranium has a 4.5 billion half-life? who is documenting this? The problem is, both sides don't see the other as having proof.

    Chris Wade
    Community Member
4 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

How? Math. Who is documenting this? Tens of thousands of scientists over the years. By knowing how many atoms a material started with, and then measuring what’s left, you can measure ages of old objects. It's called radiometric dating and it works because radioactive elements decay in predictable fashion. You don't need to measure the whole process (it's impossible), but if you measured even 0.00001% of the process, given that it's predictable, there are formulas for determining the half-life. I'll give you an extremely oversimplified example just so you can have a visual. Sit in a chair in a quiet room and clear your thoughts so your heartbeat is stable and has no reason to spike. Feel your pulse at your jugular with two fingers, look at your watch and count the pulse for 10 seconds. Say you counted 14. 14 x 6 = 84 bpm. You didn't have to sit there measuring your pulse for a full minute. You used maths to determine your pulse. Same principle.

What is the half life of plastic LEGOs? If I build something is it as old as the pieces I build it with. Your uranium 238 argument suggests that the uranium was invented during the formation of the planet. I propose that it already existed when it was used to form the earth.

People whose reading ability isn’t up to scratch might have problems parsing the information. There’s a lot of information around that is simply too hard to understand for many poor readers. Support easy language information, wherever you’re from. The problem is global and it’s affecting democracies everywhere.

    Frozengeckolover

You can literally Google anything, add the phrase "for dummies", and get a simplified version of the info. Eloquent speakers, and adept readers, should not have to simplify their information to appease the illiterate. That will make the general population less intelligent. If anyone needs help improving their reading skills, they should talk to their local librarian; who can recommend a reading program. Using big words does not necessarily mean prententiousness. What some may call complicated, others may call simple. You are guilty of not supporting easy language information; "parsing" is archaic and not in common use, and "up to scratch" is a boxing idiom that is not globally common. The only way to simplify this post, would be to say "Uranium takes longer than 4,000 years to create lead. We already have lead, so the earth must be more than 4,000." But that leaves out a lot of supportive information.

$30 million spent on research could be fundamental in preventing homelessness and helping people back on track. If it prevents just 2% of homelessness in just the US alone, then it will pay for itself in less than 10 years and prevent huge amounts of anguish and suffering. The same money spent on building homes would not necessarily reduce homelessness at all; so many of these well-meaning schemes end up being completely useless. And why? Because the research wasn't done properly first.

Didn't Finland just solve the homeless problem? They... gave everyone who was homeless a small apartment, and counseling. It's effective. 80% of people turn their life around and become independent. The other 20% get the ongoing help they need. The US has a problem of whole developments of finished houses standing unused, while thousands of people are homeless. It's the US culture of punishing poverty, and enabling exploytation by the wealthy that is at fault.

    Daphne Williams

Finland is a very different country than the U.S. I'm not saying that we don't need to look closely at solutions that other countries find effective, but you can't just implement a program from a different culture and assume it will automatically work. But yes, we definitely punish poverty here, and we have a toxic "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality that needs to be canned before things will get better.

Homelessness isn't about not enough homes. It's about not enough resources for job training, free JR. college scholarships, food stamp availability, available and affordable mental health resources like therapists, health care and affordable medication costs. Most homeless people are extremely mentally ill and have no help.

What does support vilification is Trump supporter lying about what happened or defending it. They blame Antifa or BLM (nope - it was all Trump supporters). They say it was just a "peaceful protest" (nope -they assaulted a whole lot of people and violently entered the Capitol then proceeded to loot and deface it.) Some of them are now claiming it didn't even happen. If you can't hold your own accountable then you deserve to be vilified.

I would agree but it isn’t the same across the board. Like say if one group of people all believe something incorrect and some act evil, they’re still all trash for supporting the wrong idea to begin with. If another group of people believe something correct, and some act evil, it’s just the few evil actors who are in the wrong and not the whole group.

LOL " even if you're going to use the one-sided reporting as your basis." is quite funny coming from someone who relies on Breitbart and Infowars to get their racist and fascist prejudices confirmed. It's also nice that you write "a great many Republicans are "disgusted" as well..." indicating that none of the Republicans are disgusted by anything that happened. We all know that a lot of them publicly supported the storming of the capitol.

You can slam the anti-vaxxers with logic, facts and figures all you want. It's just as useless as telling toddler Trump and his followers that he lost the elections fair and square.

I voted for Trump the first time. I learned my lesson. But not all of us who voted for him are nut cases.

Also, in the US , where I assume the majority of these idiot anti-vaxxers reside, the government is NOT mandating the vaccine.

To be fair, they successfully convinced an entire generation that you can't get engaged to be married without wearing their shiny minerals on a ring. So this is a major letdown.

Maybe we’re smart enough to understand that diamonds are worthless? There are millions of them, they have no nutritional value, can’t grow crops with them, they can be made in a lab for what little value they do have, and their “value” is being controlled by a f*****g cartel. “Shiny rock look pretty” is no longer a wise investment strategy

If that’s the case then new Star Wars action figures are worthless too. They tick all the same boxes. Something has value if you enjoy it. Dorks like their action dolls and nobody complains. Let other people enjoy their shiny rocks.

Reminds me of the local animal shelter. They won't hire you to clean out cages and walk dogs unless you have 2 years professional experience of cleaning cages and walking dogs, yet they won't hire you as an unpaid volunteer to do the same thing, because YOU DON'T HAVE 2 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE CLEANING CAGES AND WALKING DOGS.

This is the reason why many people don’t buy them. If they were more affordable you’d be hearing everyone saying how awesome they are like moissonite. People get upset and frustrated by not being able to afford stuff. I definitely understand what that feels like and it fuçking sucks.

Last millenial I saw buying diamonds was NileRed, who bought $200 of tiny diamonds; then spent another $1000 or so into turning them into C02 (by burning --- they are pure C so add O2) and capturing that, then using a Sodastream to make exclusive "diamond carbonated water". Very amusing YouTube.

Clearly a lot of people were there present over the years following the intimate family conversations. I value all their opinions, whether pro- over very-pro-Megxit; all very balanced and not a tad unhinged.

I am not fan of Markle but she is winning the PR war. It probably helps the RF has f****d themselves over. Looking at Andrew and their lack of holding him accountable for being a freaking pedophile and all the other awful stuff swept under a rug. Plus they have tried to villianize and ostracize so many women who married into "the family."

Maybe she's winning the PR war in the US, but certainly not in Britain or the rest of Europe. It's already become clear that she lied or inferred things that weren't true multiple times in the interview. Like her son not getting a title/protection because of his skin colour. That's certifiable bogus. Or having actually married three days prior to the wedding. The archbishop himself has now said it was only a rehearsal.

They are not racist. The duchess of Sussex was just a whimsical, spoiled, self-centered ungrateful traitor. Her skin colour is not relevant.
