30 Infuriating ‘Choosing Beggars’ Who Think They Deserve Special Treatment From Artists
“It’s just a quick sketch.” “You love what you do—you can do it for free.” “What do you mean, I have to pay for art?” If artists had a nickel for every time they heard somebody ask them to work for free, well... We wouldn’t be talking about ‘starving artists’ at all, would we?
Everyone should be paid for the work and services they provide, no matter if they’re a painter, sculptor, dancer, or musician. Unfortunately, the world is full of choosing beggars that want to take advantage of the artistically inclined. That’s how they end up on the 2-million-strong ‘Choosing Beggars’ subreddit. Scroll down and check out how some people try to get art for free. Don’t forget to upvote the pics that infuriated you the most and share if anyone tried to get you to work for free in the comment section, dear Pandas.
Bored Panda reached out to The Freelancer Club team and spoke to them about their #NoFreeWork campaign, about fighting exploitative unpaid work, why artists are often targets, and what can be done to avoid working for free. "Artists are sometimes looked down upon as hobbyists and yet it takes years of hard work, natural ability, and creativity to produce thought-providing, meaningful art. Artists enrich our lives, provoke thought and conversation," a representative of The Freelancer Club told us. "We must start to value artists for their contribution to society and the economy. Try going a week without art, music, and film and see how grey the world would be without the creative colors that artists provide us with on a daily basis." Scroll down for the full interview.

Customer Wants A Tattoo Artist To Issue Them An "Inconvenience Fee" For Setting Them Up With An Artist Who Was An Ex-Con
The beggar calling Bradley a monkey makes me suspect that this was more about the beggar being a racist piece of s**t.
I'd be more concerned about the tattoo artist's quality of work... not there for their history.
I love this, it was SO deserved. I wish I'd had the opportunity just once in my life to have the chance to give out a reply like this....just once... I guess I can say I'm lucky I've never ran into an assh*le like this person. But still. It would be SO gratifying!
THIS is how businesses need to deal with stupid. 'The Customer is always right' is the biggest lie in the world.
He did his time and changed. Everyone makes mistakes. We shouldn’t judge based off a mistake someone made, especially if they paid for it. I wonder if Mr. inconvenience fee is perfect
Convicted felons are sometimes some of the best tattoo artists out there. I am very happy with this persons response to this POS.
Can I Have A Birthday Discount?
Purse cent....omg! Must have come up with that during corn teen.
If he added 50% for his birthday, that would first bring the cost to $30 (50% of $20 = $10). 50% off $30 would then be $15. So he was overcharging by $5.
All math is based on the original price of $20. 50 percent of $20 is $10. So $20 - $10 + $10 = $20. So no overcharge.
Load More Replies...20 for a picture on Instagram. Sounds pretty normal depending on what kind of picture we're talking about like, is it colored? How detailed is it? does it have shading/lighting effects? full body pic or just the bust? It's pretty standard price I think.
Sounds like the graphic designer has dealt with this kind of jerk before.
Does This Work?
This one should be higher; the artist doesn't even want payment, just a credit and that's apparently even too much for this eejit.
I'm wondering if they thought he meant a credit card.
Load More Replies...That escalated very quickly and randomly. Asking to be credited for your work is standard
That's why any artist (or photographer - hint, hint, hubs) should ALWAYS use a watermark
Why are you asking if you're sorry? The correct reply is "To where? When do I leave? Can you pay the airfare?".
omg. The nuber of twats who don't understand copyright is disgusting.
We wanted to find out why artists are such common targets for people demanding free work. Here's what a representative of The Freelancer Club team had to say: "Artists throughout history have always been supported by the aristocracy. Patrons such as the Medici family would commission the masters to create works of art in the Renaissance era. Perhaps it stems from childhood. The idea of kids doodling with finger paints is seen as an infantile pursuit and this leaves an association in the adult mind."
They continued: "We have found amongst our members that freelancers who turn their passion into their profession often struggle with the business side of things. Knowing how much to charge, asking for money, writing a business plan, or setting business goals is not why they chose to get into freelancing. They also tend to work in sectors that leverage their cache to undervalue and exploit young talent such as the fashion, music and film industry. It's a vicious cycle based on fear. Say 'no' to an unpaid 'opportunity' and someone else might take it. When the talent is willing to work for free, businesses take advantage."
Do You Draw Arts For Free
I think the beggar deserves worse. Forget the fact that the they are asking for free stuff. They are rude!
Load More Replies...as an instagram artist, the amount of people who think they're entitled to free art is ridiculous. I'm a nice person, but if you're not even following me, don't ask for something that takes 5-6 hours of my time. just the other day I had someone in my DMs asking me to contribute free art to a giveaway. I told them I didn't have the time or money to afford doing that, and they got angry because "you always do other giveaways, why won't you do mine??" The only giveaways I do are ones hosted by my close friends, who I know pretty well. she goes "well we're friends," literally the only other time I 'd spoken to this girl was when she asked for free art. and yet again, I'd told her no. She proceeds to ask me for a code to get a discount on my art for her giveaway. I told her no yet again, and she decided to out me on her story, saying I was "greedy" and "rude"... maybe next time I get a choosing beggar in my DMs ill just do this!
In your free time time draw a beautiful chart with all the rates, and next time someone asks for free art send it to them. :-)
Load More Replies...Given her rudimentary use of language, the picture is probably an accurate representation.
For the cheapos: Tell them to take it to a kiosk module photo booth, hold it up to the screen so it takes a picture of the picture and then opt for the "pencil drawing" effect.
Some people want, want & want! But, I'll bet they wouldn't give the time of day for free.
I Draw Pieces Inspired By Historical Art Styles And Sometimes Do Tattoo Designs For People. Today I Had My First Choosing Beggar Experience
Why do they insist on getting belligerent instead of saying "Nevermind, I'll find someone else that is in my budget range to do it" and then just let it be?
They think bullying people will get them what they want. Unfortunately, it works sometimes. You can see it at restaurants where people will scream and the exhausted manager gives them a free meal just to shut them up. I hate the enablers almost as much as the scammers.

The Disrespect To Makeup Artists
I hope whomever this was, was contacted by the Desk of Heidi Klum and her invite was revoked.
I suspect they weren't actually invited and it's a cheapskate scam.
Load More Replies...If you're high profile enough to attend Heidi Klum's helloween party, you're high profile enough to pay. Obviously, it was lying when it said it was invited.
“I don’t have to pay for peoples services anymore because I’m invited to a party held by a model. What do you MEAN, ‘pay for my gas’?! Do you know who’s party I’m invited to, officer?!”
Unfortunately, artists appear to be very undervalued. "Creative thinking is one of the most sought after characteristics amongst business leaders and yet undervalued when not positioned within an economic context. Artistic skills, when reframed in certain professions, seem to be valued a lot more. A UI Designer or Graphic Designer who uses digital creative tools is able to command a far higher wage than a fine artist."
The Freelancer Club has been running a campaign called #NoFreeWork for the past 6 years. It speaks out against the exploitation of unpaid work in the creative industry. "We visit universities and creative institutions speaking about the importance of this issue and how the next generation of creative minds must value themselves by saying 'no' to unpaid work," the representative said.
"We also contact companies who repeatedly post unpaid roles online and we have been in talks with the [UK] Government to change legislation to provide creative freelancers with more legal protection. It requires all sides of the industry to become educated on this matter and a collective effort to put an end to the exploitation."
You can sign The Freelancer Club's #NoFreeWork petition right here.
Good To Know
Skill and talent have value, materials cost money. If you want something, pay for it or learn to do it yourself, simple as that.
Try being the professional bookkeeper in the family. NO - I will NOT do your taxes (for free) or help you sign up your lame-a*s excuse for a home business (for free) AND NO - you cannot claim your dog as a dependent. But, but, but .... I have bills to pay too, Julie. F**k off. DO NOT EVER work with family.
paper, pencils, paint, fixative, primer, aren't free. If you are a lawyer, time isn't free either. Artists should charge like Lawyers, in six minute increments.
Ten Cheers to you Amer..you are spot on. Art is a valuable 'commodity' as well as any fine art
Furthermore, art is a luxury, not a necessity. Artists should be paid more.
Remove the word "friend" from the question and it answers itself: you don't.
"put a gun to his/her head" was what i scrolled down to. Best. Beginning. Ever
If you're trying to FORCE an artist to WORK FOR FREE, start by not calling them a FRIEND.

Load More Replies...Why do people bring up the “ the other store would sell it to me for a cheaper price ” argument while bargaining, anyway? You just solved your problem; go to that store, as is— oh wait, that's maybe because that store doesn't even exist, probably.
Or because the other stores quality sucks, but they want to pay the same price for the better option. Cheap people
Load More Replies...Ugh people do this with me when it comes to haircuts.. "well they charge less over here" THEN GO OVER THERE! I can't stand these kinds of people, especially those that try and give you some detailed/sob story. IDGAF. Shoo, be gone! :)
The artist I go to charges $125.00 an hour, and she charges for the time she spends sterlizing her station. She's worth every penny.
People did this a lot at a small clothing store I worked at. We were a bit pricey. People would bring up that some other store had something similar for cheaper and I desperately wanted to tell them just to go there so I wouldn’t have to deal with them. Also we had a lady come in literally every single weekend and browse. She would pick up various items and ask if they were discounted. I said no. She would ask if we can do cheaper. I said no. Every single weekend.
prices for tattoo supplies (gloves, cleaning supplies, needles, etc) have pretty much tripled this year.
I Can't Belive These People... They Don't Understand Nail Techs, Escorts, Artists, Ect. Actually Make A Living Off Of This
That is actually cheap! Look at the skills and level of craftsmanship! I can barely paint my own nails.
I don't like fancy nails, so i don't know much about them, but $60 sounds pretty cheap.
$60 for all she wants done is pretty cheap and insulting someone because you are broke is ridiculous.
I just wish people---on both sides---would learn how to spell correctly! I would give so much more credibility to everyone involved.
I would never waste money on this kind of thing; I like to be able to use my hands.
Not a waste of money to add to your wardrobe and overall effect . It does not impede the use of your hands.
Load More Replies...A good set and technician, when I did get mine done, was a t least 100 dollars, plus a nice tip! This is one area you want to pay for quality work! If you can do it yourself, even better,go away and don't bother someone with talent! Put it in terms of an athlete. They get paid well for their talent. So does any other artist. Nail techs with that kind of talent, are very much artists! They all are. I think 60 is cheap! Raise those prices, girl! You are worth it. Besides, any discount is always at the discretion of the artist. Never ask.
The b***h wants a FULL SET ($50) special effect polish (min $10) and crystals added ($3 per gem) $66 without the tip (min 10% round up to $10) $75 and that's from a professional salon
I’m surprised it was that inexpensive. The work is beautiful and I’ve seen the labor that goes into it. Good for the artist who knows what their value is.
Love those nails and that price is good in comparison, Shops charge $80 for similar without the Bling.
In an earlier interview with Bored Panda, The Freelancer Club team told us more about the culture of working for exposure.
“Many see freelancers, particularly in the creative sector, as hobbyists and believe they can get away with 'paying' in exposure. They leverage their audience size, their brand name, or the allure of gaining recognition. This is why services in exchange for exposure is commonplace in glamorous sectors such as fashion, music, and film,” a representative of The Freelancer Club went into detail about the culture of work-for-exposure.
“From a freelancer point of view, they are often told that working for exposure is a rite of passage or an essential part of building a portfolio by their teachers, college professors, and peers. This has created a culture of exploitation that we must address at both ends.”

At least she took it pretty well. No cussing or "I hate your business" in this one.
Everyone else humiliating themselves but she was pretty cool
Load More Replies...She does get some credit for being willing to accept that she looks dumb in her photos.. lol
I mean but $265 is kinda expensive. Being an artist I do understand that it does take my time but, it seems a little pricey?
Too pricey for something only they can do after years of hard work and diligence in fine tunning their art work abilities? NO.

What a day! Everywhere I went they wanted money! Yes, for coffee, cloths, gas, food and even an antique painting and it was old! So old in fact it was an antique, I offered to take it out of their way and even they wanted money!
According to them, working for exposure or for free damages not only freelance artists’ career prospects but also affects the industry as a whole—in a negative way.
“In the UK, unpaid work costs every freelancer £5,394 per year and the figure is very similar in the States. If you give up your work for exposure thinking you will get paid work from it in the future, the statistics show this is rarely the case, besides, shouldn't additional work be a consequence of a paid job anyway? If someone is willing to promote your work, they must value it so why not pay them! It's easy to get into a cycle of working for exposure and never get paid.”
My Friend Got Shorted By A Pretty Major Influencer
I'm going to try that next time I get my oil changed in my car. Like, don't you enjoy working on cars? Why would I pay you for something you enjoy. I'll just go to another car shop, yours sucks anyway. I shan't be paying!!
Load More Replies...There is a whole generation of people who think that exposure will get them free stuff.
Made worse by companies sending them tons of free swag to post on their stories, giving these tik tok and insta teens entitlement issues

I think this one left me more gobsmacked than others because of the extremely low price quoted in the first place for a unique piece of handmade art. Ten Euros is underselling product. The fact that the "influencer" still refused to compensate makes me pray that they don't INFLUENCE any of the next generation.
What an asshat... I bet he's about 22 and thinks he's some kind of god. Good for the artist.. respect given is respect earned young fella.

Can't stand when people say "it should be free, it ain't even that hard" to an artist for their work and time. Would you say that to an author for their book? Would you say that to a contractor building your home? So many people are so self centered

Good on the artist for sticking to their guns... and the last reply was more than well deserved! (I even hate the cartoon pic the scrounger uses and the 'tone' of Hello followed with too many frickin' exclamation marks makes me want to punch them in the mouth...)
yup. (it looks like the cartoon pic was photoshopped over their real one though, but yeah they said "Hello!!??!" way too much. it didn't look like they were giving the artist much time to respond, and expected an answer right away)

Load More Replies...I lost it at "LMFAO Working." That is their fun hobby, and they were actually working on it. Don't be such a rude person.
Name and shame these choosing beggars so their so-called "followers" know
The main reasons why people work for exposure are because they hope that they’ll get paid work in the future, that they’ll add to their portfolio, or that they’ll use the name of the company that promotes their work. Not only that, it feels good to know that your creative work gets to be seen by a lot of people.
“Many creative people are told to 'get a real job' when they express their desire to do something artistic. Seeing their work in print, online, or gaining recognition somehow validates their decision and, in a twisted way, proves the doubters wrong. The irony is that they have given up their value to do so,” The Freelancer Club’s rep said.
“Work out your day rate. Once you know your value, get comfortable talking about money, and stick to your guns. We've proven that working for exposure rarely results in paid work, collaborate with other creatives or set a self-project to build your portfolio and keep in mind that the culture of working for exposure is very damaging to you and to your industry. You are talented—value yourself and others will value you too.”

What is wrong in our society that we produce SO many sex crazed lunatics? That is a serious question
Sadly, the “customer” here has zero clue that they have just offered to prostitute themselves. It’s truly shitty that the culture of sexting means people are doing this more and more often, without any insight into their own behaviour. If prostitution is your calling, good for you, but this is just horrific - they have no clue that’s what they are doing.

Life As A Nail Artist
These are just the business/client equivalent of when ‘nice’ guys begin to insult a girl's looks the monent she rejects his advances.
Why do people need to add the "your not even that good" just to try and get under peoples skin. Why you messaging them wanting their services then if they "ain't even good?"
Why do they always say, "You aren't that good anyway." only once they've been refused free service? Is that a way to save face? It seems like adding insult to injury for the artist they approached.
I was expecting a tantrum like the others. She did to the "your work is s*it" deal though. So stupid lol.
Seems like every one of these follows a pattern - your stuff is awesome! Give it to me for free. No? It sucks anyway, you should be thankful even asked. B***h.
Everyone is like "You're work isn't even good anyways" but then why'd you ask?
They love your work but don't like it anymore if it costs what it is worth. SMH

I am a designer and sewist. I CONSTANTLY have this problem. "It is "Just" a dress!" Yep, Just a dress that will take up to 4 weeks of my time depending on meeting your incessant demands, fittings, changes of mind, complaints and refusals to pay. Not to mention the time it took me to design it in the first place. Nope, now days I only design and sew for myself and close family! Retired from the nonsense!
I know it's a 'hobby' but surely that's worth more than £2/hour plus materials? Crazy sh*t what that 'customer' expects. I think £50.- would be quite reasonable.

When single moms have to remind everyone they are a single mom we are reminded why they are single moms

Artist Should Live With Their Parents And Draw For Free
Our entire financial system will collapse now that the secret is out. Live with parents...money is obsolete.

No. Me, a middle schooler (starting sixth which sucks because my campus looks super cool and I won't be able to go for a long time) knows that asking some stranger to draw for you for free is ridiculous. In middle school you just go to that art kid and ask if they could draw you something.

ohhh yeah she has a point !! Everyone should go live with their parents and freeload from them, eat their food, and not help pay rent !! It's such an easy fix !!
Even if they DID live with their parents, they may not have any other source of income and if they want to save money for something like Idk... Their own apartment or so, that would be a great idea.
ok not everyone lives with their parents like you do hun step aside
Following this person's logic they should live with their parents and ask them for the money to pay the artist.

Wow just wait till this person gets hit with a copy right infringement lawsuit maybe they’ll learn then
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah- reported-ahahahahahahahahahaha
That took 'courage and wisdom' didn't it?The ego of some is astounding.
He Got What He Paid For
My Daddy Knows Da Yazuka
I would have sent this whole conversation to his dad so that he can see what a fine upstanding man he is raising haha.
"I walk into hq and people stop typing and clap" And then the kiddo wakes up
Its sad that this kid is such a manipulative privileged douche at 14
And, uh, you're not really making money if you don't have a job man...
And there it is! The 12-year-old playground bullying tactic "My dad's in [INSERT CRIME SYNDICATE HERE] Do as I ask, or he will kill you" The same kid who you beat in online games, and he threatens to rape your mom and calls you gay. Pathetic. I prefer Frankie Boyles response: My dads gay and he will f**k your dad... and your dad will enjoy it!

Lol "Work"
I love how he begins by saying that bass guitar is "a skill in itself" but then puts "work" in quotation marks lol
This Is My Friend Who Started A Small T Shirt Business A Few Months Aho
The more I read posts like this, the more I hate deluded, entitled tw*ts like this guy...
I love it when the CB says they are blocking them. Saves the effort of doing it yourself to be honest

Most “Influencers” On Instagram Are Honestly The Worst
What a great opportunity for £11-16.5K plus bonus for extra hours(outside of 8 per day) and expenses paid! Oh, wait, you expect me to work for free and pay everything myself!?! I've got a unicorn in my back shed you can buy for a mere £20K...
Wht did u expect? It's a s****y era where anyone dumb with no knowledge or qualification can get even dumber population to follow them. I always considered learning highest point of human achivement. But I now realise that I m just striving too hard. People really have no standards . Even if I stop now I will kno so much more than these fake people
at least she wasn't expecting for them to pay for her travelling expenses too!
Don’t Do Commissions For Coworkers, And Always Get The Money Up Front
"Update: talked to them. They were confused and thought I was actually painting the picture (it was digital, which was obvious from the progress pictures I was showing them) and they decided they will still pay for the digital file to do whatever they want with it. Also, they didn’t word it that way but they were trying to say that if they knew I was just drawing it digitally they could have used a filter app instead. I didn’t try to rebuttal what she said she thought or meant to say so I could save face and avoid conflict in the workplace." Taken from OP on the reddit page.

A Tattoo Artist At The Shop I Work For Has Been Working On A Sleeve For An Acquaintance Of His, Not Even Charging Her, And She Asked To Come In Today To Get More Done. He Was Booked For The Day And She Copped An Attitude Over Him Not Clearing His Schedule For Her
Wow- she's big time delusional. To expect the tattooist to give up that much time and supplies for free... shameful!
He Then Went On To Tell Us The Future Of Digital Media Should Be Free, And That We Are All Greedy. God Forbid Authors Be Paid For Their Hard Work
Should he be paid for his Sailor Moon fanfiction no one reads?
Load More Replies...The only free writing that I will do is rude fanfiction (not that you can charge for that anyway). You want good writing with original stuff, you pay for it.
Guy Tells An Artist He Will Pay For A Thumbnail Design For His Youtube Vids, Then Refuses To Pay Because He’s Not Using The Image Anymore, After Using It For Over A Week
good luck with that. i evicted a tenant who wasnì't paying her rent because she was "never home" so she felt like it wouldn't be fair for her to pay, go figure. lost 1 year worth of rent (and paid taxes on money i never received) but it was for the best.
That sucks for you... miserable, untrustworthy scamming people out there!

That was my first thought, big c**k and balls on his back!

Want A Huge Discount On Art To Show Off In Front Of Friends
You know what I don't get? Is that in the second text, it says, "it's COVID $100 is expensive" but then they said that they were doing an 'in home' art show with around 40 people. That there, my friends, is a typical Karen.
But Expausure!
Pay Me For Exposure
No, its not I have bills to pay so good luck Karen but no its not possible.
Man Thinks I’m Scamming Him Because He Doesn’t Understand Hourly Pay
You scammed me because I don't understand how simple multiplication works!
And this is why some artists require payment upfront.

What is it with these troglodytes and resorting to insults when they don't get their way?
Exactly. Is that the way they were taught? To insult others because you weren't spoiled like your parents treated you?

Choosing Beggar Is A “Micro Influencer” Who Will Pay You When She Gets Endorsed
If they're looking for someone to partner with and they agree to profit splits ahead of time, that's not so bad.
Yay, First Customer!!
Draw Free Art For My Movie
There is a correlation between being a choosing beggar and the inability to use *your* and *you're* correctly.
Why should I add an apostrophe when my friend can do it much better without the apostrophe? Are you trying to scam me? Your apostrophe isn't even that good. Fatty.
Load More Replies...There's a huge amount of projection going on in these. It's always "Your work is great, I want one. Not for free? You are so greedy and your work is s**t." Projecting their own lack of ability onto others when their selfishness fails.
It's sad to see that this is something people do all over the world (and you all say Americans are bad? shush! haha). I am a crafter and I have had so many people ask me to make them things for free or a really low price all the time. One of my crafts is crocheting and I did this beautiful afghan that would fit a King Size bed and this woman wanted to pay me $50! The yarn alone cost more than that, never mind calculating my time and abilities. I was willing to charge $350 but all I got was an earful of nasty comments. Needless to say, she didn't get the afghan and I sold it for $400 to someone else who appreciated my hard work. These "influencers" and the like are what is wrong with the world today. Lazy and don't want to pay for anything. I feel sorry for the younger generations who have to deal with this type of person.
I feel your pain. Influencers all need to just die out or in a fire..glad you could get paid what your time was worth!
Load More Replies...I HATE CHOOSING BEGGARS. I have been threatened with being exposed as a thief and a scammer, been called a b***h, c**t and worse, told that people will expose me for what I am, all just because I won’t work for free. I make decals and 3D models and the number of times I’ve had to deal with entitled a******s is more than I want to think about. Oh and people wanting their money back after they get what they paid for and after seeing photos or screenshots and saying it’s fine but then changing their mind after..and they wonder why I don’t do it anymore. Some people are just trash
You just reminded me of another asshat that pissed me off. I make stationary sets from scratch. Because I use something that is being recycled in all of my crafting goods, this guy thought he could get over on me. He purchased one of my stationary sets that included customized note cards, matching envelopes made by hand, a pen, and the box it came in was recycled from cardboard boxes. After he bought it, he said that the box "dissolved" and that he realized it was made from "trash" so he wanted his money back. He also used over half of the note cards and envelopes. He wanted a full refund and another set. He threatened to sue me if I didn't comply. I said that I didn't think Judge Judy would appreciate his sense of humor and then I never heard from him again. I am sorry you had to endure the same things.

Stupid beggars. Just because your mother is dying, just because you’re a single parent, just because you are famous does not mean you deserve free art.
As an artist who tries to make some money making art, I feel all of this. People just assume that since many draw, paint, sculpt, or photograph as a hobby we'll all just make stuff for free or for like 10% of minimum wage. No one expects accountants, security, engineers, bankers, salespeople, etc. to work for free...Yet if you're an artist (or musician) people honestly ask you to do 'pro bono' work All. The. Time.
So many of these remind me story of Fox and the grapes. http://www.read.gov/aesop/005.html
Yep, that's the "You won't do it for free? Whatever, you're s**t at art anyway!" ones for sure.
Load More Replies...As an artist during these challenging times, I honestly try to give the most reasonable price I can - as art is really a luxury and not a necessity. Thankfully my clients all understand this. I can't even imagine being lambasted with insults over not wanting to do free art. People be crazy!
