Tourists Throw Rocks At Panda Because They’re Bored She’s Sleeping
Pandas are one of the main symbols of China, they represent friendship and peace and are known for their gentle temperament – but that didn’t stop two tourists from throwing rocks at a giant panda in the Beijing Zoo. Another visitor caught the incident on film and said the pair were trying to ‘wake up’ the endangered species animal.
The panda bear, nicknamed Meng Da, already appeared to be awake and lazily going about its business, but that didn’t stop the two from displaying animal abuse. The video was posted to China’s version of Twitter, Weibo, where the stoning of an innocent zoo animal drew more than 100 million hits.

The video was taken at the old panda pavilion, built in 1989 to celebrate the 1990 Asian Games hosted at the Chinese capital. Taken over a length of 30 minutes, the 38-second clip shows one person hurtle stones then another.

Going about its business the cute panda did not seem to pay any mind to the attack. A spokesperson for the zoo told The Beijing News that the animal keepers rushed to the scene on Saturday to prevent any more tourists from throwing objects into the enclosure. Meng Da was also reported as unharmed or affected by the incident.

This is not the first time animal cruelty as this happens, unfortunately. July of last year, tourists of a reserve in Foping County, Hanzhong, Shaanxi province, were asked to leave and blacklisted after throwing stones at a panda, CCTV News reported. Beijing Zoo has since promised to improve panda house security and inspections.

How about lifetime bans for them and their families? If they try to come in, they get arrested for trespassing and have to pay huge fines. Maybe if enough families get banned, the rest will keep the idiots of the families under control so the rest of them don't have to suffer the consequences of their stupidity.

Exactly. Had an otter here in our zoo who died of blockage because some dipshit human threw a plastic ball into her enclosure. Still not sure if the male will make it - he is in mourning and will barely eat. Most people suck.

I have a really bad impression of Chinese tourists. Where I went and met chinese tourists, they were the most inconsiderate, disrespectful, loud, and rude to everyone and everything

I personally think that Chinese tourists are such a bad example of how actual Chinese people behave. I'm Chinese but I would never even think about doing these horrible acts. I think that it doesn't matter where you come from I think the way you act is based more on how you were taught to act when growing up and what environment you were raised in. Because any human who does this is bad and we shouldn't judge an entire nation based on it's tourists because that is not how all people from China act. I'm just pointing this out because it is unfair that someone is getting hate on their nationality without doing anything so instead of criticising Chinese people criticise the person who's doing the indecent thing.

Great article! I was always under the impression that us, the USA, tourists were the worst. Though we personally have always tried to be extremely courteous and aware of the locals when we, my family have traveled, I do see appalling behaviour of our own countrymen acting absolutely disgusting here at home. Which gives me the idea that we behave the same when traveling to other countries. I do wish that everyone would be wary of their actions when traveling as it represents their homeland. Though, I wish for a lot of things.

I remember when I was little there were these ducks at a park. Then came some kids my age (6-8) who started throwing rocks and stones at the ducks. It's a cruel world we live in.
For all we know the people throwing the rock weren’t even Chinese. All we know is a woman shouting in Chinese for them to stop. These comments are terribly racist and disgusting. Nobody wants to be judged because of anyone else’s actions, so it would be great if we could quit doing that to others.

Unfriendly warning: if I catch anyone throwing rocks at animals, I'll throw much larger rocks at you. I was a pitcher for our female baseball team all through high school and though I've been out of practice for a while, I can still hit you. You don't want to be hit by something going over 40pmh, it's very unpleasant.
Such incident can (or already in the past) happen in all zoo. I see that in my zoo there has been many sign to educate people not to do so.

Every year 100 of thousands dogs are must brutally killed for a big feast where dog meat is the main course? There was a Chinese lady who bought several hundred of dogs meant to be slaughtered and she built a huge refuge for the dogs. She will give or sell of her dogs. She wants to keep them safe.

Here in Finland one zoo recently got two pandas and many visitors wondered why the security was so ridiculously high compared to other animals of that zoo. Pandas had their own building with glass between humans and pandas. Most other animals had just metal cages. But if people in China really act that badly in a zoo then I understand why the Chinese people demanded a extra security for the Finnish zoo also.
They were on a surveillance video. Their "Social Credit" account has already been automatically annotated. They will be fined. They may find that the next time they go to get on a bus or subway, the doors close in front of them. They may get fired without explanation. THEY WERE OBSERVED ON A SURVEILLANCE CAM! THERE IS NOT DOUBT OF THAT!

You can't just judge w/out knowing all the facts. They could be a rehab facility or protecting the animals from certain death by human encroachment, or any number of other kinds of beneficial wildlife organization. The animals aren't in bear cages either (see what I did there :) ). The zoos do their best to replicate the animal's natural habitat. My point is, don't judge, man, they're trying their friggin best.

This behaviour is what comes from mass control by a government of its people. The resulting general public have no socialisation skills on how to behave, no empathy or appreciation for things living or otherwise.
Find the rock thrower(s) Throw rocks at THEIR heads. And by throw, i mean take both rocks and smash them into the sides of their head at the same time.
They should put the guilty tourists in an enclosure and let people throw rocks at them, and see how they like it.
