Tourists Throw Rocks At Panda Because They’re Bored She’s Sleeping
90Kviews
Pandas are one of the main symbols of China, they represent friendship and peace and are known for their gentle temperament – but that didn’t stop two tourists from throwing rocks at a giant panda in the Beijing Zoo. Another visitor caught the incident on film and said the pair were trying to ‘wake up’ the endangered species animal.
The panda bear, nicknamed Meng Da, already appeared to be awake and lazily going about its business, but that didn’t stop the two from displaying animal abuse. The video was posted to China’s version of Twitter, Weibo, where the stoning of an innocent zoo animal drew more than 100 million hits.

The video was taken at the old panda pavilion, built in 1989 to celebrate the 1990 Asian Games hosted at the Chinese capital. Taken over a length of 30 minutes, the 38-second clip shows one person hurtle stones then another.

Going about its business the cute panda did not seem to pay any mind to the attack. A spokesperson for the zoo told The Beijing News that the animal keepers rushed to the scene on Saturday to prevent any more tourists from throwing objects into the enclosure. Meng Da was also reported as unharmed or affected by the incident.

This is not the first time animal cruelty as this happens, unfortunately. July of last year, tourists of a reserve in Foping County, Hanzhong, Shaanxi province, were asked to leave and blacklisted after throwing stones at a panda, CCTV News reported. Beijing Zoo has since promised to improve panda house security and inspections.

Shitty way to act towards their National Treasure
Honestly Foxxy, where they came from is irrelevant. It was still a terrible act.
@Foxxy i think that you misinterpreted the original comment- pretty sure nobody pointed fingers. regardless of where they come from, they're still in that country- and they're disrespecting it.

Well der, I know it isn’t relevant and Yes it is a terrible act. I was just saying because other people are pointing fingers at specific nationalities without knowing the facts. But that’s okay, I am the one being ridiculous. 🙄
Embarrassing. Simply embarrassing.

Foxy, read about how the Chinese tourists throw rocks at the animal attractions near the great wall. It's very typical of how they behave.

It was tourists that threw the rocks, the article never mentioned where the tourists came from.
Why does it matter whether they were Chinese or not?? We should be focused on the fact that this poor animal was being abused. It was already taken from it's natural habitat and if not that all it knows is the walls of that cage in that zoo. Fact of the matter is, these tourists (Chinese or not) should be arrested and charged with animal cruelty cause to abuse something just because you're bored and want to be entertained is not only deplorable it's also disgusting and deprived. Not to mention it isn't just a bad reflection on whatever region or nationality you're from, it's a bad reflection on human beings and our species/race as a whole.

Why wouldn’t foreigners do it? There are douche bags all over the world that would do something like this.
Are you fking kiddin me? o.O They should get the same amount of rocks thrown at them by the Zoo staff. ffs people this day are either super stupid or super viscious
How about lifetime bans for them and their families? If they try to come in, they get arrested for trespassing and have to pay huge fines. Maybe if enough families get banned, the rest will keep the idiots of the families under control so the rest of them don't have to suffer the consequences of their stupidity.
Oooor how about we as a species teach our children from a young age not to be douche bags! My kids know better than to throw a rock at a friggin animal. (and people of course) I can't stand ignorance but it all starts with up bringing. IF the parents did their job correct and the "child" (or adult child) is an ignorant moron, then they need to be fined and maybe put in jail for a bit to think about their actions. And yes I agree with the ban, let's ban all these morons and their families!
But what if only that one person in that family throws rocks at the pandas, and only that one person is bad? What if the rest of the family likes pandas, are decent people? Then the whole family can't go to the zoo because of that 1 person's stupidity.

Honestly I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more at all zoos. People just toss their toddlers into the enclosures I guess
Each staff person should throw as many rocks as they did at that poor panda
They should install some sort of plexiglass barrier to protect the animals from these incidents in the future. Force people to watch them without chucking stones.
Exactly. Had an otter here in our zoo who died of blockage because some dipshit human threw a plastic ball into her enclosure. Still not sure if the male will make it - he is in mourning and will barely eat. Most people suck.
I do understand that we feel and think all animals should be left in the wild but sometimes humans need to interfere with this for the sake of the animal or their species to thrive.
The same thing happened where I live but with a tennis ball and a hippo. You would think a big animal like this would have no problem pooping it out, but no. It died a horrible death.
