Religion and politics are thought to be the underlying things that can make it or break it in this world when it comes to humans getting along with each other. But the differences don’t end there.
We have night owls and morning people, people who prefer yolk over egg whites, those who can curl their tongue and those who can’t. There are left-handed people and right-handed, and in the midst of the scale, you have cat people and dog people.
If you’re one, and every individual on this planet has a preference for dogs, cats, and rarely both, you’d know what that means. And if you've been living on the moon and still don’t know whether you’re a dog or a cat person, then this batch of tweets is just for you. So roll up your sleeves, ‘cause it’s about to get heavy.

Eh. Cats and dogs have, on average, different ways of socializing, and people can differ in what comes more natural to them. I don't hate dogs but generally find them exhausting; on the other hand, I love the low-key socializing that's typical of cats.
Yeah, same here. Dogs really are adorable, but they're too social for me. However, there really are dogs out there who understand the concept of healthy boundaries and will just happily chill by your side. Those are mostly adult trained dogs, though. Anyway, I have no pets because I'm a bit lazy, to be honest, but I do find them adorable.

Seriuosly, I like all those. I'm not a "this kind of person" if I like it I like it. I love all animals and marvel and DC. Love Pokémon, liked digimon as a kid.

There’s been an ongoing debate on whether cat and dog people are really that different. And if we commonly agree on the fact that they indeed appear to have somewhat different personality traits, the question on what exactly separates them remains open to discussion.
So in order to find out what a person who spends more time with felines than many of us in lockdown spend with other human beings has to say on the discussion, we reached out to Molly De Voss. Molly is a certified feline behaviorist with a vision to reduce the number of cats euthanized in shelters, plus her cat intuition reigns supreme.
Molly said that in her personal observations, dog people “tend to be more 'outdoorsy' than cat people,” but she added: “that said, I like to hike—with my cat, of course.”
Step 1 of befriending a cat: Signal your interest and that you come in peace. Step 2: Wait for the cat's response. There is no way around step 2. (Caregivers and friends don't have to be the same person, in a cat's opinion, so feeding won't guarantee an emotional bond)
In my limited cat experience they key is staying calm and offering. While I would urge a dog to be groomed I once sat over an hour offering a brush to a kitten that was said to never have been groomed and in the end it came, got curious and let ne brush it.

Thank you for this explanation. I love animals and always wondered why I dislike cats. I would never hurt one (I ignore them) but would not like to live with a cat.
Moreover, “more women tend to own cats than men—partly because cats are seen as feminine and dogs more masculine; and partly because cats gravitate to women more because their voices are in a megahertz range similar to their meows.”
The feline behaviorist also noticed stronger feelings about cats since “more people (usually men) really dislike cats than they do dogs.”
“I think that may limit a single woman’s opportunities in the dating pool—especially if she has multiple cats. However, I have several male cat-owning clients who are neither gay, nor neurotic so obviously there’s no 100% stereotype that fits all,” Molly concluded.

To find out what the science has to say about this highly debatable topic, Bored Panda also reached out to Beatrice Alba, a lecturer in psychology at Deakin University and the co-author of a 2015 study on how dog people and cat people differ on dominance-related traits.
Beatrice told us that the bigger differences seem to be between people who self-identify as a "cat person" vs a "dog person." “But, of course, you don't have to choose between the two—plenty of people identify as both or neither. Having said that, although we found statistically significant differences between cat people and dog people on some psychological measures, the size of the effects were not huge.”
So is mine! She also snorts all the time and it's adorable

Dogs have been with humans for ages (at least 15,000 years, maybe over 20,000), way back when all were hunter-gatherers, cats joined much later when humans created settlements and turned to agriculture. The dogs' wolf ancestors needed extensive breeding to be truly useful, the cats' ancestors just needed to warm up to humans a bit (and humans to cats). Since their ancestors already WERE useful by nature (kept vermin in check) there was no need to to breed them, meaning cats essentially bred and domesticated themselves (seeking out human proximity would have been an advantage, since that was where their prey really thrived). The older cat breeds are really just local variations of the generic cat, with a few posh breeds for the elite classes added to the mix. Serious breeding only became a thing about 200 years ago.
When people ask me what kind of cats I have I say tortoiseshell and american shorthair. They have no idea what that means so i usually have to simplify and say "a black and orange cat and a tabby" then they get it
@HooowlAtTgeMoon, cool, I've got a Tortie too, she's a rescue

This is essentially a preference for hierarchy and the belief that some groups of people should dominate other groups of people.”
As a result, the creators of the study argued that “people prefer pets that complement their own personalities, so someone more inclined towards characteristics related to social dominance should prefer a more submissive pet, like dogs.”
Meanwhile, “Those who are not so attached to hierarchies and ranking highly within them may be more inclined to like cats, who we all know defer to no one,” Beatrice concluded.

At our shelter, a buff cat was so affectionate, he'd put his arms around anyone's neck when they opened his cage door. A man came in with his wife looking for a cat just for him and I directed him to the buff cat's cage on the far end. He opened the door, the cat put its arms around his neck and he said, "This is MY cat". And the cat had a loving home right there.
Another recent study conducted by the psychologist Samuel D. Gosling and his colleagues at the University of Texas in Austin, in which 4,565 individuals were asked whether they were dog people, cat people, neither, or both, shed some light on these questions.
Gosling summarized his results, saying, "There is a widely held cultural belief that the pet species—dog or cat—with which a person has the strongest affinity says something about the individual's personality, and this research suggests there are significant differences on major personality traits between dog people and cat people."
There have been so many videos of cats defending their human, especially kids.
On that note when I was an infant I rolled from the sofa in my diaper, the cat lounged itself from an armchair and hook otself on the edge of the sofa, so I stopped on him. Bless his heart, gone for 20 years now, still missed.
Load More Replies...Cat's have different social needs from dogs. Dogs were bred to serve humans, cats bred themselves to cohabit with humans. Dogs were bred to NEED us. Cats... weren't. I think some people misinterpret that as "cats being mean" when the thing is simply that cats have more of a choice in liking a human or not. But they CAN like humans - even care very deeply for them.
Cats are EXTREMELY social and their people are very important to them. Just their chosen people, though.

I once fell to the floor crying in pain and couldn’t get up because of a back injury. My cat tried to scruff me and when that didn’t work she ran down the stairs meowing her little head off to get help. <3
One of my cats (1996-2014) once wouldn't stop meowing, sitting at the window in the middle of the night. When we checked, our neighbor was lying outside unconscious in the snow. He saved her life!
Gosling’s research showed that dog people were generally 15% more extroverted, 13% more agreeable, and 11% more conscientious than cat people. The same research showed that cat people were 11% more open-minded than dog people.
Pretentious dog people do that. You don’t need to drop a wad of money to get a good dog. I rescued my terrier mix (lots of different terriers) dog right off the road after he was dumped out of a car. No collar, no chip, not fixed, skin and bones, never brushed or groomed in any way so had mats of hair that were two to three inches thick (I cut them off ASAP once I got him home, before we gave him a bath), toenails so long they were curling over each other like crossed fingers. But he had a great personality, and immediately got along with our multiple cats like they’d always been his pack. Scruffy’s been well taken care of, and fat and happy now, for ten years. He adores his Cat Pack, loves my husband and I, and defends his yard from all intruders, until we tell him the person’s OK. And to think, someone else had tried to just throw him away.
I found my dog in a ditch. Thought she was dead and was moving the body so my kids didn't see it. Noticed she was breathing so she came in the house. That was on Valentine's Day about 8 years ago. I'm not a big fan of cats but I'd still pet one if it came up to me. I don't think I'm a bad person because I prefer the company of dog to a cat. It's not like I'd just walk up to a cat and kick it. I wish BoredPanda would stop it with this holyer than though business. I enjoy debating politics, but they literally want people to fight like cats and dogs.

A study led by Denise Guastello, an associate professor of psychology at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin, also showed somewhat similar results. People who said they were dog lovers in the study tended to be more lively—meaning they were more energetic and outgoing—and also tended to follow rules closely.
Cat lovers, on the other hand, were more introverted, more open-minded, and more sensitive than dog lovers. Cat people also tended to be non-conformists, preferring to be expedient rather than follow the rules.

Stanley Coren surveyed 6,149 people, aged 16 to 94. It included 3,362 dog owners and 1,223 cat owners, and the rest were people who had neither of them. “My results showed that people who owned only cats seemed to be somewhat different than dog owners, or people who owned both dogs and cats, in terms of their personalities. People who own both dogs and cats seem to be much like the people who own only dogs,” Stanley explained for Psychology Today.

My first cat was super mean and crazy most of the time, and I still loved him. Still have scars from him and that was over 20 years ago.
I was about 8 years old when I was sitting on a step outside, and a kitty came up to me. The kitty was rubbing against my legs and purring, so I gave it a lil pet. That's when the kitty decided to sink it's toothies deep into my hand. I had to get several shots and a few stitches. But I still love cats! I have a severe allergy, so I can't adopt one (I get blisters on my eyeballs lol). But that one incident didn't make me feel negative towards cats. They are so cute and make many peeps very happy :-)

When it comes to personalities, Stanley found that “people who own only cats tend to be relatively introverted (low on extroversion) and also reasonably cool (low in warmth or agreeableness).”
The author of the study explained further: “The general pattern that comes out of both studies is that dog owners are more social and interactive and cat owners (who own cats exclusively) are more introverted and self-contained."
On the other hand, it wouldn’t be right to generalize these findings and claim that they represent the full picture. Keep in mind that the dog and cat owners that were surveyed for studies represent only a fraction of society, and that any claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

It’s not true. Cat or dog, it’s like having a family member who may get physically old, but will always be a child. Good or bad, a child. They will always need you, whether willingly or begrudgingly. They will always love you, in their own way. And when they die—-all too soon—-you will miss them, because they were always members of your family.

However, I know quite a lot of people who love dogs and hate cats and say that cats are "scary". I find it more "scary" when a massive slobbering doggo with huge teeth comes bounding up to me like it's about to knock me over than when a kitty pounces on me.
that's interesting, 'cause the old farmer down the road from me died, and his dogs ate most of him....well, he wouldnt get up and feed them, not their fault!
My personal verdict: Posh breeds are elitist, mutts and rescues aren't. Regardless of cat or dog. And regardless of cat or dog, I hope you researched the needs of your breed, didn't get a breed with known genetic issues, didn't just get your dream breed without considering all the responsibilities of pet ownership, and didn't get it from a dubious source for cheap.
When in need of a cat, go the the local shelter. There is always a cat who wants to adopt you.
I want to add that if you want a certain breed (especially new ones or trendy ones) to make sure highly diverse heritage and that everything extreme might cause a problem: short legs, too long ears, too much skin, too small, too big... Average is best in most cases.
Anyone rescued is far soul-satisfying than pure breed, including people.

I am so sorry that happened. That is absolutely awful.
Load More Replies...Why is it perfectly acceptable for dog owners to let their dog jump up on you. "Oh he's just friendly" meanwhile I'm trying to get up off the floor. At least a cat can't knock you over.
It's not. It's poor manners and poor pet ownership.
Load More Replies...I don't dislike dogs, but I'm afraid of them. People try to convince me their dog is ok... "he'll just jump all over you and lick you to death" isn't a winning argument.
Yeah... I love dogs but I get being scared, uncomfortable, or not wanting one. They're a lot of work and some dogs are big and get exited easily. And if someone had a bad experience with dogs in the past people should respect that. And if they really want them to try and like dogs the they need one that's well trained and calm. Which is a little sad to say cause I had a great dog that jumped and licked like crazy but he was too much for some people. So I get it.

i got bit by a dog once and i freaked out, but i have been mauled by my cat multiple times and i love her with my whole heart.
if you tell a therapist or therapist's kid dog person you had a traumatic experience with a dog they will talk to you about it and help you move past it and help you realize that it was the fault of the owner and not the dog without forcing it on you.
I don't like dogs either. They're too clingy! I need my space. Cats are great because they sporadically want love and attention, but they're also independent and have their own lives. Dogs wanna be with you 24/7. Same reason I don't have kids.
I've always wondered why it was alright to hate cats, but dead wrong to hate dogs. I have heard so many people say that they hated cats. When I asked them why, they replied "I don't know. I find them creepy." If you think that a cat is creepy, then you don't know s**t from creepy.
Idk why you're getting downvoted when this is a perfectly legitimate reason to not really care for dogs--they tend to be much more odorous than cats and their body oils can leave furniture, walls, flooring, and more smelling very much of dog if the dog isn't bathed regularly and if the house isn't deep-cleaned once or twice a year (more if more than two dogs). Cats may have litterboxes but those are pretty much contained, and cats don't produce as much noticeable scent all over the house as dogs do (for the average fixed cat--sprayers are a different story). Cats tend to be much more well-groomed than dogs if left unattended, and most probably never really need to be bathed except a brief sponge bath now and then. And I've officially ranted longer than intended. Point is, dogs are smellier on average than cats, so this is a fair reason to dislike them.
Load More Replies...I love other people's dogs, and I mean LOVE. But I don't want my own. I can't deal with a dog's energy 24/7. That's why I have cats.
I have one friend who will lose her s**t if anyone mentions not liking dogs around her and once one of my other friends said that they were scared of dogs and she got all huffy and I’m just like 😐 I really don’t care as long as ur not rude
I order from Amazon just so they'll have new boxes every week.
Load More Replies...I give my cats the best foods that they like. One can self-regulate her intake, and the other one is such a chow-hound that given a chance, she will eat until she pukes. I regulate her intake in this case. They get their yearly check-ups, requisite vaccinations, bi-monthly nail trimmings, baby blankets (we live in Canada), and plush toys that they toss around like rag dolls. Yeah, I like to spoil them because they're worth it.
If you find a cat on the street you should most definitely go get it vaccinated .. both cats and dogs are expensive.
List of things you need for a cat: Toys- basically any piece of trash Food: Cat food isn't too expensive How to get one: become Dora the Explorer Grooming: Sit and wait they do it themselves
once a cat treat went under the oven, and my cat was clawing under there or 3 hours. the treat was found, as well as 15 year old dust bunnies.
Apart from those exotic breed long haired cats, all others are much cheaper to maintain. Cat vaccines, foods are also cheaper than dogs.. and they groom themselves..
Prescription food however...now that'll put a hole in your wallet.

@Fluff - Please leave this conversation. We disagree but at least we're civil.
I love my two cats but I would like a dog as well one day. I just need a front fence for the yard first. Possibly a bigger house because I want a medium to large dog.
If I had space for a dog I'd get a dog too, but I much prefer larger dogs as opposed to smaller yappier dogs for the most part (except my mothers friends jack russel mix, She is the best doggo and is so cuddly and i miss seeing her >.>) My dream dog is an Irish Wolfhound tbh, but I don't think I'd ever have the space or time. Thus I will be content with my kitties x3
my rule is... if it's smaller than a cat... get a cat instead. (except for dachshunds and jack russels. Maybe a couple other breeds of that sort. Both are big-dogs in little-dog bodies.)

my cat let me pet him, at least when he is in a good mood that is, or when i give him to eat
Furthest thing from the truth. I am a total Dog person and equally love both my cats. Always had cat's along with my Dog's
wdym, my mom had 3 cats, and a doger, he was super nice and big guy, when i was small i used to ride on him like horsey, he was super nice dude, but he paseed 😔😥
No s**t, look at how Aizawa and Shinsou turned out, even killua.....smh....the rage and Jealousy i feel can match no words
If you observe a cat long and well enough, you find out that they are very much like dogs in their will to connect and their devotion. They just speak a completely different language. Cats seem to really, really, REALLY need a place to retreat back to and be unobserved and unbothered at. Dogs? Not so much - but they still do, too. Cats and dogs both are very private with many things. The more I live with them, the more I realize that it's a partnership where I am the slow learner and the animals are lightyears ahead in comprehension. They have sussed me out much more than I them.
cats unlike dogs have very different and distinct personalities
As someone who has owned several dogs over my life, I can confirm that you are incorrect. Dogs have very distinct personalities as well. All my dogs have had very different and unique personalities.
Load More Replies...my moms cat was the best cat that ever lived, whenever my mom was sad, she would purr at her feet and very gently bite her in compassion, she even alerted my moms family when there was a burglary, she survived a 8th floor fall, but she passed away when she caught a rat and died from dieses, her name was umka 😔
I have come to understand what my cats want and they know what I want, sometimes I will mew at one of them and they come over mew back and give me a nuzzle, kinda just checking in and sayin helllo
They aren't. The real demons are the ones who think so.

I'm a dog person, and I don't dislike cats. I love them and I think they are literally so adorable, but I can't be around them because I'm allergic.
I am allergic to cats, but I have two of them. They were rescues, so I was not going to give them up. I take my prescription allergy medication everyday, so I am fine to spend time and cuddle with them.
Load More Replies...And cats shouldn't eat dog food. Cats are almost exclusive carnivores, dogs are closer to omnivores (or trash cans) and processed dog food quite often include stuff that isn't healthy for either (but cats are more sensitive to it).

Most of the posts boil down to "Cat people are more accepting than dog people" at this point
Wait I don't understand. If the cat person is dating the dog person then the dog person is dating the cat person, right?
I do not choose a side in this fight - I love both. This is lazy journalism from a CNN web scraping AI. Essentially, cat owners are more likely to date dog owners than visa versa because there's more dogs owners. Based on the most recent numbers (https://www.americanpetproducts.org/pubs_survey.asp) from a group that truly keeps track of our pets, 33% of households have no pets, 53% own a dog, and ~35% own a cat. Since there can be overlap (own more than 1 pet type), if a person who owns a cat is looking for love ~ 5 in 10 people on the site will have a dog, ~ 3 in 10 will not own a pet, the remaining 2 of 10 will have something but not a dog. That means a strict cat person is at least 2.5x more likely ( no more than 2 vs 5) to hookup with a dog owner by pure chance.
Knowing she was sarcastic I will let you think a bit more...

Honestly, It's kinda true. Most of my friends are dog people and most of them say they don't like cats because cats are evil. Then I facepalm.
I love all cats. My fiancé and I try to spot as many cats as we can any time we're outside. We give neighbours' cats names and will pet any cat we come across outside who is willing to be petted.
Actually, cats were one of the good parts of 2020. A queen had a litter of 3 kittens and she raised them next to my house after they turned 3 weeks old. They are now strong and healthy, but feral, so i can't pet them.

The thing about dog/cat differences: Dogs have been with humans for ages (at least 15,000 years, maybe over 20,000), way back when all were hunter-gatherers; cats joined much later when humans turned to agriculture. The dogs' ancestors needed extensive breeding to be truly useful - they probably were somewhat dangerous like the wild animal pets of today (likely not as bad as tigers, but still) and ate the kind of prey/meat that humans ate. The cats' ancestors, on the other hand, already WERE useful by nature - there was no need to change their traits, meaning cats essentially domesticated themselves (seeking out settlements would have been an evolutionary advantage - lots of vermin to hunt). That likely also affected their approach to socializing - dogs were BRED to look up to humans, but cats just needed to warm up to humans. I swear they DO like humans, they just don't have that deep, desperate need for humans that was bred into dogs. But this lack doesn't equate hate!
They did seek out settlements! We have evidence of them doing that!

I grew up with dogs. And was scared of cats from a young age. No reasonable explanation as to why I was scared of them. I guess I just didn't get them or ever spend a reasonable amount of time around them to fully appreciate them. I married a woman with a cat and 5 yrs later we have 5 of them, all rescues. And if anyone f##ks with my cats I will straight up murder them! The dog vs cat debate is stupid!
In looking at overly friendly dogs, researchers found that they carry two variants of genes called GTF2I and GTF2IRD1. Those are the same genes that, when absent in human beings, cause Williams syndrome—a condition in which there's a surplus of oxytocin, a.k.a. the love hormone.
