Laura Bates, the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, says that it seems to be increasingly difficult to talk about sexism, equality, and women's rights in a society that perceives to have achieved gender equality. "In this 'liberal', 'modern' age, to complain about everyday sexism or suggest that you are unhappy about the way in which women are portrayed and perceived renders you likely to be labeled 'uptight', 'prudish', a 'militant feminist', or a 'bra burner,'" she explained.

But just like Bates, there are plenty of women who prove this notion wrong. And you can find many of them on the subreddit r/TrollXChromosomes. It's an online community that invites to "come for the period comics" and "stay for the cultural awareness", and many, in fact, do — the subreddit has over 817K members. The content they share and produce tackles important gender issues in all sorts of fields, including sports, health care, and work.

A fetus isn't even a fetus until the end of the 8th week of pregnancy. Until then, it is still an embryo. And "cardiac activity" isn't a heartbeat.

This refers to the new law in Texas. They used the 6 week marker as their turning point. Technically, you are correct, but this lady refers to the idiot law in Texas.

I really dont get how "Christians" care more about a fetus than they do a child that is living in poverty , they'd rather kids starve than let them collect food stamps , whats the difference ? they are both Gods creation are they not ? if so why does one get more support than the other ? i'd just like to be educated on this as it baffles me.

Not only that, we should also make damn sure the father is forced to pay child support. It takes two to make a baby, so the entire burden should not be put on the mother. An automatic deduction from his pay, at whatever adequate percentage is needed, and if he tries to not work or work under the table, he should be tracked down. If he ends up in prison, the government can pick up the payments to the mother, but have the father pay it back through work while in prison. This would solve the problems of 1) men shirking their responsibilities by claiming the child isn’t theirs, because DNA doesn’t lie, 2) the culture that equates manhood with having several baby mamas, but not giving them a penny of support money, as they would now be on the hook for LOTS of child support payments, and 3) the crime problem, as owing the government for paying your child support would mean some very long hours working while in prison. If the choice of abortion is off the table, then replace it by tying the fathers down for support.

Actually yes, men SHOULD support the women they got pregnant throughout the pregnancy, from the very first symptom. It takes two people to conceive and they should both be responsible right away. Citizenship is assigned at birth. I guess it could be assigned earlier if the country (countries) wanted to, this is a matter of a legal definition, not a God given natural state. Also: not all countries automatically grant citizenship to babies born there, in Europe I think mostly the baby gets the citizenship of the parents no matter where the labour happens. Insurance is a business, you can insure whatever the insurance company offers to insure. Although any insurance on a pregnancy before week 12 is going to be very expensive given the high rate of natual miscarriage. I'm not sure when the embryo/fetus/baby deserves to be called a person, but I do know that biologically, it is a human from the beginning, based on its human DNA. The discussion about abortion is a discussion about (...)

At 6 weeks it is NOT a fetus. That is not designated until 10 weeks of of pregnancy. At the first 2 weeks its just a clump of cells dividing & multiplying. It develops into an embryo. The embryo doesn't even look like a "human" yet. The head shape doesn't look human. Eyes are little black dots with no eyelids & not really arms & legs they look like flippers. It does not look like what the public thinks of when they hear the word "fetus". As far as heartbeat, there isn't one, because the organ that is called the heart has yet to form. Its just a very tiny group of cell tissue that is developing or has developed the capacity of electrical conductivity. That needs to come first so when there actually is a heart it can beat.. Its an embryo. It doesn't have a heartbeat. There is no heart. Just a teeny bit of electrical conduction so that when there is a heart, it can beat. That's it. If they want to consider an embryo a person, just as we are legally designated, then yes I think she's right

The "no abortions after three months" rule came about because in ancient times, people thought that was the time the soul entered the body of the fetus, causing discernible fluttering/movement. It's incredible that this old-fashioned belief still affects the allotted time frame of women wanting abortions today. (I'm pro-choice and thought that history fact was interesting)

It's good you asked. Child support should begin at six weeks... actually before, it's called marriage which is the intended context to have sex, conceive, and raise children. And to the deportation question, humanity begins at conception, not U.S. citizenship, and it is rightful to deport human mothers and their unborn babies when they break laws to come here. And for insurance, we don't insure post born babies, so why would we insure the pre-born?

wendillon avatar

Unfortunately that is an equality that will never be reached. For as long as there is a child, there is obligation from both humans who created the child. Since the potential child resides in the body of the female, the male has no say over what happens to it. The only way for a man to ensure he's never faced with the obligation to a child he doesn't want is to use whichever forms of birth control he can find. A woman terminating a pregnancy is terminating the potential that the child will exist. There is no child, so there is no obligation. A man terminating his obligation would still lead to the potential existence of the child, a child that requires money to live and so the scenario isn't equal. Didn't mean for this to turn into an essay but it's an interesting discussion point, thanks Truth.

Well its a veritable mine field isn't it. For me its very simple. Is there proof of life. The fifth wheel of government will send in the top echelon military units to secure a national. If there is proof of life. All hostage negotiations are balanced on proof of life. Proof of life is obviously the only thing. Imagine being that person that denies proof of life.

Yes, absolutely child support should begin at six weeks.. actually well before. It’s called marriage which is the only legit context to conceive a child and have sex for that matter. Life insurance sounds good if someone wants to fund a memorial for a miscarried child, but an unborn baby is minimally of economic impact which life insurance addresses. And we don't insure babies with life insurance after birth anyway. Citizenship begins at birth, humanity begins at conception, so no, a pregnant immigrant is not carrying a US citizen.

The professor is wrong! A man/women jailed have right to get insurance? No! Right to Vote? No! So... all man/woman are equal? No! A 17 year old person can buy alcohol? No! The different stages of the life have different rights! You just can't say because a fetus is considered a person, can get Insurance..it's a person in a different stage of live

The pandemic isn't making this any easier, too. According to UN Women, the global champion for gender equality, there are 6 urgent issues women are facing during the time of COVID-19.

1. Violence against women and girls. "Before the pandemic, estimates said one in three women will experience violence in their lifetime," the organization said in a statement. "As economic and social stresses rise, and movement is restricted by lockdown and stay-at-home guidance, instances of violence are likely to increase. At home, survivors of domestic violence may be trapped with their abuser, with limited access to support services, healthcare, and justice systems. And in public, women are at heightened risks of violence navigating deserted public spaces and transportation."

2. The gender pay gap. "Around the world, women are at the frontline of the COVID-19 response as they make up the majority of health and social care workers, especially as nurses, midwives, and community health workers, and account for the majority of service staff in health facilities as cleaners, launderers, and caterers. Yet, an average gender pay gap of around 28 percent exists in the health workforce," UN Women wrote.

"Once occupation and working hours are accounted for, the gender pay gap is 11 percent. Although the health sector performs well regarding women’s participation, it still harbors discrimination against women in earnings, and full-time employment and leadership roles for women are lagging."

3. Digital gender divide. UN Women pointed out that studies online have become the new normal but not everyone can continue their education because internet access remains a privilege. "Many around the world, including girls from poor households cannot participate in remote learning, since they lack the required tools, skills, and technologies."

"It was already a dire disadvantage that girls, women, and marginalized groups are least likely to have access to technology, and as the COVID-19 pandemic has moved so many aspects of daily life online, the lack of connectivity has become even more alarming, exacerbating existing gender inequalities."

4. Informal work and instability. The pandemic has deeply affected women's livelihoods and income. "Women typically earn less and hold less secure jobs than men. With economic activity at a halt during the pandemic, women working in the informal sector have seen a dramatic decline in their capacity to earn a living. Adding to the loss in income and paid work, many women are also juggling an increase in unpaid care and domestic work."

But according to UN Women, this can change. "It's on all of us to share the added burden of unpaid domestic and care work at home and speak up for a gender-aware response to the economic shock of COVID-19, including supporting women in the informal sector."

5. Period poverty and stigma. "Even before the pandemic, women, and girls have been facing discrimination when they menstruate. In some parts of the world, they are seen as dirty, untouchable, or a disgrace. Whether it’s a lack of money to buy pads, tampons, or other products, access to toilets, or discriminatory laws and practices, women and girls, especially the world’s poorest, are deeply impacted by their periods," UN women continued.

The organization stated that it's especially challenging for women and girls to manage their periods safely and with dignity during a crisis.

"The provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygienic conditions are essential to protecting human health. Yet, today 500 million women and girls globally are estimated to lack adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management. This puts women and their families at greater risk of infection. Periods don’t stop for the COVID-19 pandemic, and neither should our efforts to break harmful taboos about menstruation and end period poverty."

6. Underrepresentation as leaders in health. "Women make up 70 percent of the health and social care workforce, and they are more likely to be front-line health workers, especially as nurses, midwives, and community health workers. This exposure raises women’s risk of infection (in fact, infections among female health care workers are up to three times higher than among their male counterparts). Yet, women remain in the background of decision making, underrepresented in health sector leadership, and missing from the center of the COVID-19 response."

There might be a record number of women serving in the 117th Congress but society still needs to go a long way and start treating them the way they deserve.

Thank God, because I really can’t be arsed to get all dressed up every day. On the other end of the spectrum, my little sister’s (thankfully now ex-) bf, who once yelled at her when she came home from a 36 hour shift at the hospital and put her jogging bottoms on. She needed to be “presentable” at all times for him and it completely broke her self esteem. Arsehole.

That’s on him to teach his son to be more caring, it’s a strength in men that many women and some men can appreciate as a strength

What isn’t being recognized is how much women before you had to fight to get to this point, and how those women are rarely appreciated

It's weird the reaction a woman gets when she walks into a comic book store (alone that is). If you get a chance, check that out. If there are no ladies already in the shop it's almost like you spooked a herd of deer.

Or the opposite: "You'd look so much prettier if you'd wear makeup." Well, I feel absolutely comfortable without makeup, I hate the feeling of things on my face, and on top of that, I don't want to look pretty for a random stranger in the streets.

It's not pro-life, it's pro-birth. Pro-birthers generally give zero f***s about human life for roughly 80 years of life. They only care about 9 months of gestation.

How many women are stuck with abuser because of this... But hey, your family was telling you that he's really persistent so you should give him chance... And how many of those end up as headliners in news.

I think it's important to note that men are actually wired this way. My mom made a decent feminist out of me. Try to do half the work in the household, paternity leave for a total of 2 years (2 kids) ... I'd say I'm firmly in the feminist camp. Yet I still notice that first impressions are always base emotions such as "I'd hit that". I notice that it's just what my lizard brain tells me ... it's my conscious decision not to be a creep about it and behave normally. What I'm trying to say is that boys are not so much "taught" to be creeps, they're "not taught" how to behave properly, "not taught" that we're not cavemen anymore.

I dumped one my best friend, not for being a sex offender, but for simply not having respect for his fiancee and sleeping around. And for disparaging me for not wanting to behave in a similar fashion. I tried being tactful about it at first and tell him that I wasn't ok with his behaviour but eventually had to block him, in his mind "out of the blue." One of our mutual friends had no idea what he was doing and told me he was heartbroken and fell into depression for having lost my friendship. Then I told her why, and she blocked him too. I'm not saying I've always been the ideal role model, but at least I can recognize the errors of my past and work towards rectifying my shortcomings. Edit: spelling
