Woman Treats Her Colleagues With Home-Baked Goods, Two Of Them Threaten To Report Her To HR

There are a bunch of talented bakers out there. People who can whip up the tastiest desserts from just a few simple ingredients. Their talent and skill fill each treat with extra goodness. Luckily for us, the best bakers aren’t shy and love to share their goodies with the world.

One such baker was doing just that and making tasty treats for her coworkers every couple of weeks. Unfortunately, two of her colleagues confronted her about it and tried to get her to stop for a weird reason.

More info: Mumsnet

2 of the woman’s colleagues, who are always dieting, confronted her one day, saying it’s unfair and unhealthy to tempt people who are trying to be ‘good’

The women also threatened to report her to HR for not having a hygiene rating certificate, because someone could get sick after eating the cakes

Baking is a wonderful hobby that requires a lot of skill, time, effort, and love. The poster mentioned that she enjoys baking and is very good at it. She has tried her hand at various traditional and unique cakes. Because of her interest, she also whips up many cakes for her coworkers. Even though there’s a team of 10 people at her office, her traybake cakes disappear by Wednesday.

The woman then mentioned that she was suddenly approached by 2 of her colleagues one day. They always seem to be dieting or talking about fitness, and they told the poster that it’s inappropriate and unhealthy for her to bring in homemade cakes to work. They also stated that it’s unfair to bring the treats, especially when people around are trying to diet or be ‘good.’

Another shocking part of the interaction was that the coworkers said she could be reported to Human Resources (HR) for not having a hygiene rating certificate. A hygiene certification is needed for food businesses to ensure all safety policies are met and to help customers make informed decisions. Since the poster hasn’t been selling her cakes at work, there’s no need for her to even get the certification.

Unfortunately, the woman was shaken by the harsh words of her coworkers and the fact that they assumed people could get sick after eating her baked goods. She clarified that her kitchen at home is spotless and that she was more upset about being confronted by the 2 women.

It’s interesting to note that a person’s proximity to food or snacks can increase their likelihood of snacking. An experiment conducted at Google found that people overeat because they get tempted, especially if snacks are kept closer to them. It’s possible that the two women on a diet kept experiencing cravings after seeing the poster’s delicious snacks and finally couldn’t bear to look at the treats anymore.

Image credits: Matheus Guimarães (not the actual photo)

Many people think that cravings are a result of not having enough self-control. The reality is that many factors play a role in reinforcing the craving cycle, such as the wiring in our brains, as well as easy access to pleasurable foods.

The Economic Times states, “it turns out many people are dealing with cravings the wrong way by trying to restrict, avoid, and distract themselves from tempting foods. They skip dessert when everyone else is eating it, walk away if a colleague brings doughnuts to the office and try to ignore their craving for the ice cream in the freezer.”

Research states that it’s better to acknowledge the urge for food rather than trying to run away from it. The two women in the office probably could not resist the temptation of the cake, and their only plan was to forbid the poster from bringing in her baked goods. Dr. Suzanne Higgs of the University of Birmingham says that people who are dieting are often more responsive to the presence of food in their environment because food might always be on their minds.

Making food for someone else is a form of love. That’s exactly what the woman was trying to do by bringing delicious food for her coworkers. People in the comments told her not to be discouraged and said she should continue bringing her homemade goods to work. Others wondered how the fitness freaks even thought it was okay to tell the poster not to bring her cakes into the office.

Commenters sided with the woman, saying that self-control is a personal problem and that the other women should have minded their own business

One can't sell food without appropriate hygiene and food handling training (at least not in the UK), but if it's a freebie, it's entirely your own choice. Also, from Gary Delaney: "Doctor, how can I lose weight?" "Don't eat anything fatty." "You mean things like cake and chips?" "No, I mean don't eat anything, fatty."

She should preemptively report that woman to HR for harassing her and threatening her. Lol. I would have straight up told her to stop projecting her eating disorder/food beliefs on others. After all it's her personal opinion that a cake is a "bad" food.

It’s not rocket science. If you don’t want to eat the cake, don’t eat the cake! I love to cook and I often take an extra portion of whatever I’ve made to work for someone else to eat. The only complaints I ever get is that I didn’t take enough. Nobody else is responsible for your self control. These women are in their 50’s. They are grown ups so they need to grow up.

Time to get those two a sponsor they can call at a moment's notice: "Brownies in the break room... I can't hold on much longer..." "It's okay, I'll be right over. In the meantime, can you suck on a grape or nibble a vitamin pill?"

People have become so entitled it depresses me. Even one of the people on her side said the only thing you "owe" is a note on allergens. What?? NO. That would still be a courtesy. You owe exactly nothing to any of them. You are in charge of your weight, choices, intake AND ALLERGENS. Wtf happened to us that we think everyone is in charge of making sure everyone else is ok and getting their needs met? It is not possible. And , I, for one, refuse to try anymore. Eat the cake. Don't eat the cake. But leave me alone either way. Wtf..

No one is forced feeding you their treats. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot do they think they are the good police controlling everyone to confirm to their lifestyle. I say go to your Supervisor/Manager & request an HR meeting yourself to report harrasment.. also the other coworker who agreed with the controlling person did not gang up on you did she? I think there is a difference of opinion that can be shared but no one has the right to order you not to share your talented baking skills. I hope things are resolved without additional conflict. 🎂🍰🧁🥧🍮🍪🥠

I hate people like that. Had the one who would see something home made/store bought desserts and let everyone know she’s on a diet and throw it away. Another was vegan had to let us know what’s in it, why we shouldn’t eat it makes comments while we ate. I had the person who said she was going off sugar. I kept peanut m&m’s on my desk. She would come in grab a handful, bite each one to crack it take the candy coating off drop it back in the dish eat the peanut. I bought another dish told her to put it in that. She did then when it was full of the candy part I dumped it on her desk. That stop her.

Just send an email to all ten employees, explaining that unfortunately there will be no more baked goods going forward as 2 people who shall remain unnamed are unhappy with the temptation, and also strongly believed the someone in the office would likely sue me if they become ill for whatever reason and decide to blame it on my cooking. Trust me everyone will know who the unnamed people are.

Keep bringing cakes, add a sign that says "Nutritional Information for Dieters" and list that, and add a picture of your kitchen labelled "Kitchen where this cake was made - Decide for yourself if it's clean enough." When people ask why you did that, name and shame both Karens saying, "They had concerns about the healthiness of the cakes and the cleanliness of my kitchen - I think this should solve that." Then let your co-workers commence laughing at them.

My old company would order pizza and salad about once a month and people would complain about it. Sure, it got a little old ordering the same pizzas (like 5 different kinds) from the same place everytime. But it's still free food and the pizza was good. It always seemed so entitled to expect to be able to choose where food was ordered from if the workers weren't actually in charge of doing so. It was a perk not an expectation, something promised when you were hired. Whats funny is people still ate it. And the company always catered every major holiday and people still complained that it was pizza once a month.

Late 50s? I'm just on the precipice of 50 and so glad that I no longer obsess about diet and food. I exercise regularly, eat healthy, eat a lot of vegetables, and never say no to a piece of cake. But I don't make diet and exercise my entire identity. Let's be honest, if I haven't gotten my 18 year old body back by now, it ain't happening. Life is short, live a little. Eat a damn piece of cake every six weeks. Also, stop making your lack of self-control everyone else's problem. Society really has gone all in on lack of ownership. There is no introspection. Everything is everyone else's fault.

NTA but it's not worth the potential trouble. So keep your baked goods to yourself or share with family and friends and neighbors who appreciate them. And if someone in the office asks what happened, name and shame the two coworkers who threatened to report you to HR for bringing baked goods to the office. Or, instead of a tray in a break room, wrap individual sized pieces in cling wrap and quietly offer them to the other coworkers without the troublemakers knowing.

I would simply stop bringing in baked goods, and when someone inevitably asked me why I stopped, I would blink innocently and say "Oh, X was worried about me potentially getting in trouble because my home isn't a certified bakery. If someone got sick or reported me to HR I could get in serious trouble! Obviously she doesn't want that to happen so she kindly warned me of the potential and I decided she was right."

In the states, I'm in New England, our town over 100,000 people the health department does NOT mess around. They had a town wide dept meeting one day and some people brought a pot luck, foods from home kitchens. The health dept was present and when it was realized that the food was from home kitchens, not inspected, not certified, every morsel of food was discarded. Why? Many people die of food poisoning each year. Just because YOU think your kitchen is spotless!!! Really? I have had food sanitation training and have been certified. Most home kitchens WOULD NOT PASS inspection. For reasons the average person wouldn't consider. In this state you cannot have a food processing facility (food preparation for others free or for sale) attached to a living facility. So no, HOME KITCHENS do not qualify. As far as the food at work? You are there to do your job. Unless you're the cafeteria cook? Get back to work, leave the food home.

Good heavens. It reminds me of the school system telling parents birthday treats had to be store bought. Well that cuts out the low income kids bringing anything in. I would much rather see a confection that is homemade come through the door, you know a little extra was put into it.

That these women expecting the OP not bring treats, is one thing, but the nerve to decide for the other team members not to eat the home made cake they enjoy, is another thing. If I was one of the other team members, I would go to the HR to complain about these two Karen's!

Yeah, I'm dieting also, look at these thighs and my a**e. Let me tell ya, you'll really hate those free cakes that that nicee nice girl sitting over there brings in every once and awhile.
