They say there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’. But some people are selfish, shortsighted, and seem keen to ruin everyone’s day for their own pleasure or gain. Naturally, we call these people jerks. While unpleasant to deal with, your average, run-of-the-mill jerk isn’t usually someone to fear. Not so if they’re your boss.
Good bosses are a godsend, but bad bosses make you pray for divine intervention. Even worse than merely incompetent managers are bosses who love being jerks. Jerk bosses are by far the crème de la crème of all possible types of the species known as jerks.
Bored Panda made this list of the greatest examples of bosses acting like jerks, so you can feel a bit happier about working at your current job, in comparison. So go make yourself some popcorn, grab yourself a drink, and scroll down. Upvote your fave jerk boss stories and let us know if something similar has ever happened to you! Your mom probably told you to stay away from jerks when you were a kid. However, when we’re all grown up, we can’t always choose our colleagues (and especially not our bosses), as we choose our friends. I’m sure that at one point or another we’ve all met jerks that made us grit our teeth, put on a fake smile and pretend like everything’s just peachy. When all we really wanted to do was Sparta Kick them into a volcano as a sacrifice to the venerable Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Ohio State University researcher Bennett Tepper explained to the Harvard Business Review that “if your boss is hostile toward you, you are going to be less satisfied with your job, less committed to the work. You are more likely to experience psychological distress. We know that performance suffers; we know that people are less helpful when their boss is hostile toward them.” So far, so good.

“I have found no upside whatsoever to a boss being hostile, even though there is a lay belief out there that if you kind of kick people a little bit, maybe you can get them motivated. We never seem to find evidence of that,” Tepper revealed how aggressive behavior isn’t too great for inspiring folks to work harder.

One Of A Seemingly Endless Series Of Unreasonable Notes Left By My Boss. It’s Great Here
Tepper and his colleagues checked whether acting aggressively right back at a hostile boss would yield any positive results. Are you ready for the shocking news? No, acting like a jerk to your jerk boss doesn’t create anything of value for you, nor for anyone else. The old adage that two wrongs don’t make a right is absolutely correct. Only, in this case, two jerks don’t make a warm and supportive work environment.
Our Boss Doesn't Let Us Take Any Home!
This is a catastrophe of epic proportions, no pizza should ever have to endure such suffering
What a waste, where I am now all left over food goes into the fridge and becomes free for anyone to take home. The place I worked before where I am now used to put the leftovers in the custodial break room. Our support staff had very good moral from just that simple act of left over pizza, subs, etc from our events and meetings
I've worked in a lot of corporate kitchens and they do this so people don't intentionally make more food that is needed so that they can take the excess home. Theft is a huge problem in kitchens.
Wouldn't it be a better solution to give the leftovers to homeless people?
Load More Replies...That’s horribly wasteful. Why would you throw away almost three boxes worth of pizza. A lot of minimum wage workers can’t even afford dinner for Pete’s sake.
Its bad, but there,is sorta a legitimate reason for it. It has less to do,with employees getting sick. But if you allow mistakes and extra food to,be brought home. Soon everyone's friends and family are, being fed on all the "mistakes" and "extra"
This is the correct answer. I know a few local pizza places that would allow the employees to take home unsold pizza at the end of the night... the employees were cooking up like a dozen elaborate pizzas 5 minutes before closing time every night so it had to be stopped.
Load More Replies...Think of people who have no food and LOOK here you are throwing it in the bin }:(
It is a waste. The reasoning I've heard for some places is if an employee got sick after taking it home the restaurant could still be liable. Not sure I buy it, but it was what I was told. Seems like it's something that could be easily avoided by saying the company is not responsible for illness due to taking home leftovers or something along those lines.
That is the reasoning in Europe for the lack of "doggie bags". But it is an absolute waste. If they decide to take it, it's on them. Where is the "pizza rat" when you need him???
Load More Replies...What a total idiot to waste food like this! At least a shelter who could help so many should get it. It's an insult to throw away food, an insult to the dead animals, an insult to the hard working farmer, an insult to society and an insult to all starving people.
I stopped buying in a certain chain of supermarkets here in Spain because they have always refused to donate their leftovers to shelters or food banks. They even make the workers spray the food with ammonia or bleach so that people can't retrieve it from the rubbish bins. I think everybody should boycott the companies that behave like this. If all they care about is money, let's make them lose money. Then they will listen.
Load More Replies...This is so wasteful. I have a friend who used to work in a coffee shop franchise. The employees were allowed to take home the muffins that were not sold by closing time. Otherwise, they were destined for the dustbin. One time, she sent me home with 2 dozen muffins because she and her co-worker were so sick of eating them. I just put most of them in the freezer to be eaten gradually.
at the Liggett's (i think they are all gone now) where i worked in the late 90's , we were allowed free food to eat on our shifts, and some we could take home. otherwise it was discounted
Load More Replies...I've worked at so many restaurants (national chains like Olive Garden, etc.) and the only restaurant that ever cared if we were fed was Logan's Roadhouse. They would let you sit and eat before or after your shift at a very nice discount price...sometimes would even comp it for you if you asked nicely, lol. This boss is a jerk
I'm surprised you had to pay for your meal even at a discount price. It used to be that workers were entitled to a free meal if they worked a full shift, in Australian restaurants anyway.
Load More Replies...One of my first tasks in a grocery store was to remove cheese from the computer system. The entire refrigerated cheese section had gone down. 10 buggies, filled bottom to top and mounded, over $20,000 in cheese, almost all of it still very cold, thrown away. I cried
When I was a kid I worked at McDonald's and it was the same way. Their reasoning is if you het sick off of it you could sue.
Basically every fast food restorant ever. All over make food items goes down the bin. No one is allowed to take it home or eat it. All the while humans are dying of famine. This is the biggest reason why I hate my job.
Humans are not dying of famine where there are fast food restaurants. Those are two separate issues.
Load More Replies...Almost all restaurants have this policy to stop employees from purposely making mistakes so they can take home free food. Also, you need to keep all waste to figure out your true P&L.
Just think about it : if an employee is sick because he ate a leftover, in law, it's the restaurant's fault. The employee can attack in justice the restaurant for that (and win). For example, in France, the left over are under restaurant's responsability until the garbage bin is emptied by the truck.
I have never understood throwing food away like that. Donate it to a homeless shelter and get a deduction if you're that cheap.
Used to be the same at my (train catering) job. They were afraid employees would break products on purpose to be allowed to take them home (and yeah, many did, so it wasn't entirely stupid).
When I was a student at the uni, I was working as a waitress in this cafe. It was famous for it's pizza and our employer was one of the absolute best humans out there. We'd always save up the untouched leftovers for any employee that wanted them or any homeless person that came in. We had our regular homeless that knew that we always had bottles of cold water for them for summer and hot tea for winter. If we were all out of the leftovers, like given them all to the homeless, yet we had none left for ourselves when we were hungry, he'd immediately make some for us, free of charge or deduction from out payment. For 3 years I've worked there, at the start of the new school year, he'd always ask us students if we need any supplies for school and he'd bring us new pens and notebooks the next day. He had small children and he’d let them pick the supplies so our pens and notebooks would have some cartoon characters on them, he’d call us his “work children”. He really was one of a kind.
NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOO THIS IS SO WRONG HOW COULD HE DO THIS???!?!!!
I knew a girl who had once worked in a cream cake factory. They allowed employees to eat as many as they wanted, even taking reasonable quantities home. It had been 10 years and she still couldn't bring herself to eat another cream cake...wise bosses!
This is an infuriating picture, all that wasted food could help so many. At least give it to the homeless
Used to happen at the Pollo Tropical ( A fast food chain in the southern part of US) I worked at. The manager would have the employees throw away buckets of Chicken, Rice, Beans etc at the end of every single day instead of letting them take it home.
I'd wager that this was because the employees would not only take advantage of free leftovers, they would massively abuse it. I'm talking not just taking home plates of chicken and rice & beans, they would invite family and friends to come to the store every night. I've lived in South & Central Florida most of my life and seen so much abuse like this, especially in the Miami area.
Load More Replies...Well, if they are not allowed to bring it home, at least give it to some homeless person or something!
why wouldnt they??? my mom's boss is a jerk a lot but she still gets to take home a lot of food from the restaraunt
i used to manage a pizza place, part of a corporation. They had a policy against taking excess home because some employees would purposely make to much so the could take it.
what a waste! i cant stand pizza being treated like this :,0
Some homeless people would have enjoyed this, rather than the garbage to waste !!!
And homeless are starving..really?? We waste sooo much food in this country, it's a sin..
What a loser the very least he can do is give it to the homeless please don't tell me tosses it out fool!
waste of food. this is especially sad considering people are dying from starvation :(
My bro's ex gf told us this about her boss being like this. They couldn't cook too many serves of chip's (fries) at one time and couldn't put the A/C on in summer coz it cost too much. you had to wait for the chips to be cooked (which isn't too bad. fresh chips is great...but not when they are really expensive...with extra cost for salt. Yes the boss was THAT stingy.). She'd check at the end of the day that nothing had been thrown out by the staff in the big dumpster at the end of the day too. Bro's gf didn't hang there for long.
If he doesn't want any of the employees taking the rest home, then give it to the homeless... Don't throw it away, asshat!!!!!
I worked for places like this and we threw out so much food or was sickening
Wasting food is criminal! We throw out obscene amounts of food every year while millions go hungry.
yep Ive worked for boss's like that good pies / rolls and chicken "oh no you cant take it home thats theft and dismissal" but they happy to Bin it O.o
Why not place overnight in the fridge then hand out to homeless charity the next day?
Yup, my workplace was like this too. I worked at Little Caesars and they wouldn't even feed us, even when they made us work open to close and we didn't get a break to go get food elsewhere.
That’s illegal. DOL has clear rules regarding hours, breaks, food breaks, etc. File a complaint with the Department of Labor.
Load More Replies...When I was in high school I worked for Pizza Hut and I regularly filled a 50gal garbage can with leftover pizza and over-proofed dough. You have no idea how much food the US wastes every day.
What’s over-proofed dough? (I know the dough part, but not the term over-proofed.)
Load More Replies...This absolutely revolting. You have to be a complete c**t to waste all that food and not care in the slightest.
This is a criminal waste of good food. For revenge, the staff could pretend they had eaten every bite of pizza, but instead hide the leftovers in a solid, opaque plastic storage container. It could be hidden somewhere like a corner of a store room where no single employee would be implicated. Keep adding the leftovers to the container until they get moldy. Then, after the boss is gone for the day, a designated employee could pack & ship it all to the boss' home, with everyone chipping in for postage. This is a really sick idea, but it just popped into my head. I suppose boss would retaliate by banning pizza lunches, but it might be worth it! ;-)
I worked for BK 30 years ago and they did the same thing. They thought if they allowed the employees to eat the leftovers at the end of the night, that they would make sure that there were leftovers.
there was a McDonald's where workers were allowed to take extra stuff home, also in the late 90's-i did a few times
Load More Replies...Leave the trash bag clean (don't put any actual garbage in there) and dumpster dive. 👍
Ask the local TV station to do a story on how much food goes to waste by local restaurant, when it could be used to feed those in need.
Ever work as vendor for a hotel that do the same. But eating in place is still tolerated. I think it is fair enough for F&B business.. So employee not try to cook extra for themself to take home.
With how much is in there my guess is that they sell pizza by the slice, so they have to have a variety of pizza at all times. I worked at a place that sold pizza by the slice and they expected us to throw away whatever didn't sell. We did not do that though- if none of us wanted it the last few years customers would get a LOT of pizza.
Load More Replies...He problem waits till it’s all in the bag then when no ones around he takes it home for kids.
Tell the local homeless people to check the bins when you close at night. Some of them will be very grateful and when the mess gets out of hand for him he might start giving it to the staff as it will be cleaner
I would be screaming "There's people in Africa starving! Maybe even this office!" Such a waste of food.

I'd say we lack proper context for many of these, in that we only see the "end" result and not what led up to it.

Eventually he got laid off, and most everyone started leaving the business, making it go down, so then the boss calls johnny back, but with less pay. His boss continues to yell at him. Eventually johnny left and got a well paying job, where his boss is really nice and doesnt yell at him.

My boss hates when I use the nickname D**k. Especially since his name is Stephen.
