It’s astonishing how many employees are expected to complete tasks way outside their job description. Some bosses even go as far as assigning responsibilities that are just as bizarre as they are beyond their worker’s call of duty. In fact, one in ten people report working at a job that requires performing unusual tasks like spying on coworkers or shredding paper by hand.
Redditor thathallandoatesgirl, who was working as a receptionist, contributed to this list by sharing her boss’s demands to babysit her infant. The original poster (OP) expressed discomfort about caring for a child and having additional duties without extra pay, but she was completely ignored. Confused about how to handle this situation, she turned to the r/antiwork community for netizens’ unbiased opinions.

Bored Panda reached out to the author of the story, who tells us that she no longer works there, as she was dismissed about a week after the incident. “I shared this story because I had seen so many stories on r/antiwork about bosses who went too far in some way or another. I thought my story would really fit in there. I thought people would really get a kick out of it. I no longer work there. I was fired about a week later for ‘performance issues.'”
She recalls that it was nothing out of the ordinary for her to assign such unreasonable demands. She shares, “When calling leads (making “cold calls”), she told us that we needed to call each lead 3 times in the morning, 3 times at lunch, and 3 times in the evening before we went home. This needed to happen every day for 8 continuous days (a total of 72 calls) before dismissing this lead.”
She described her former boss as out of touch and paranoid. “My former boss was very out of touch and didn’t understand why people didn’t want us calling them that many times. She was also very paranoid about being spoken badly of behind her back. She would have meetings with us and would say, “If I find out anyone is speaking badly about me, they will be immediately terminated.”
It got to the point where she would have one of the office staff call people who left negative Google reviews about her office and offer to give them a refund if they would take their bad reviews down. It really says a lot about her business.”
Having gone through this situation, the author emphasizes the importance of drawing clear boundaries. “I would say that I already prioritized and established clearer boundaries in my personal life, but I will say that I believe this experience just reiterated why it’s so important to do so. People will take advantage of you if you don’t.”

We also contacted leadership development and organizational culture consultant Sasha Farley, MSOD, who says, “As a general rule, you should only be expected to perform tasks related in some way to your specific role. This includes when your job duties say, “other duties as assigned.” In a general sense, those “other duties” should relate to your role in some way. So being asked to perform tasks completely unrelated to your job role is not appropriate.
Picking up lunch for a meeting or stopping for some office supplies may easily fall under the category of work-related duties. But when a boss asks to pick up their dry cleaning, purchase a gift for a spouse, or take care of their child, it already seems like running their personal errands.
Such requests can hinder employees’ work quality, disrupt the work-life balance, and even impact their overall job satisfaction. Therefore, it’s important to address unreasonable demands and establish healthy boundaries.
If faced with an unreasonable request, Farley advises saying, “Unfortunately, I will not be able to do X task. I was hired to do X job, and these additional requests for my time are outside the scope of my job duties. I am dedicated to this company’s success, which is reliant on me completing my assigned responsibilities, and completing X task will interfere with my ability to complete my job duties. However, I am happy to support you in tasks that relate to my job and will support the company’s success.”
She explains further, “This type of response can ground your boundary setting to concrete job duties (usually shared at the very least during job interviews) and subtly remind your manager that you are not there solely to serve them but to support the larger company’s overall success.”
She also mentions that this can be a great time to document and define your general role and responsibilities if you haven’t accomplished that previously. “Very rarely will managers put these unusual requests in writing, and asking for this type of clarification can help them think about the appropriateness of their requests and help you both gain added clarity around their expectations of you,” she adds.

In cases where trying to establish healthy boundaries escalates into disagreements, Farley recommends knowing your company‘s policies and how it handles conflict. “If your management has ignored your boundary-setting attempts, it’s at this point that you will need to decide how much potential risk you may want to take on by continuing to refuse to perform the task.
There are many options you can take, from formal to informal, and it’s up to you to decide what option you are most comfortable with (in the end, you have to live with any potential negative impacts). So I encourage you to consider the pros and cons of various options before deciding on one.”
Before taking this to formal channels like HR, she suggests trying to smooth things over while standing up for your boundaries once more. “For example, when continuing to face pushback, it can sometimes be very helpful to have a direct conversation with your manager about the reason they are asking you to do these unusual tasks outside of your job duties.”
She further encourages to reflect on what both parties have shared. Trying to form a connection between employer and employee and understanding the other person’s perspective might help de-escalate any conflict and move forward with more clarity.
Farley concludes by saying, “These situations can be very tricky to navigate, and it can take a lot of courage to push back on management. While there are many different approaches and advice people can give, there is no one right answer.
In these situations, I encourage people to consider each option and think about the potential negative and positive outcomes based on their understanding of their company’s culture. In the end, it’s important to trust their instincts on the best approach to take and to also remember that no matter the company culture, everyone deserves to be in a place where they feel respected and comfortable.”

That is not appropriate to for a manager to manage someone's kid. How would it even work if the Office Manager has to take a kid to a meeting or if have to watch that the kid stays out of trouble?

But to bring the baby into the workplace and expect your employee to get work done is just on. And there are legitimate safety and potential legal concerns. It was a different situation in terms of the reason, which could be legit for a day or two, but to expect it ongoing is a big no. Also, to clarify: for those saying that chiropractors are not doctors, please stop spreading false information. They are, in fact doctors, and undergo extensive training (see Medical News Today article). A doctor holds a doctorate. The doctor you go to see at urgent care who writes your prescription? My contract only pertains to just that my job!!! See if I didn't lay down and have that baby either ask and pay me to watch it or deal with the consequences of your illicit actions but that's a strong hell no to baby sitting your baby for free
This story sounds kind of fake, but anytime I hear about a mom with no attachment, my first thought is PPD/PPA. Either way, such a thing is reportable because despite that bogus job description, that could be considered child neglect/abandonment.
Not convinced by post, but in US and UK and probably many other places, changing your duties by more than 10% requires renegotiatiin. This would be a straight forward case, take the boss to court. Or use it as blackmail and stop working/change your hours and improve your life while you find another job.
So much here.If she's such a conservative Christian, how did she get pregnant to a guy out of wedlock ? If she has a good practice and employs 2 admin. staff, she can afford to take the baby to a registered infant care centre. As was mentioned, admin. staff aren't qualified to look after infants. Legally you're required to have training in the field and I bet if something went wrong with the child, your boss would be the first one to sue.
This happened to me. I was a receptionist at a nursing home and one of the nurses didn’t have a sitter for her twin boys (aged about 8-10 months) so she brought them into work. I was told by the director of nursing that I would be looking after the boys for the day whilst the mother was in training all day. Fortunately they were in the pram for most of the day but I still had to bottle feed them and look after them. I don’t like babies/kids and don’t have any of my own for this reason. I remember always praying that I would never have to do this again. Fortunately the mother was fired from the nursing home about 6 weeks later so no more baby minding for me.
I had a male boss who made great money and expected me to help his very spoiled, unemployed pregnant wife and her equally spoiled, rich, married sister. Leave the office to do housework for pregnant wife, pick up rich sister of wife at the airport.... I told him I don't mind reasonable errands FOR HIM that allow him to keep working, like picking up his lunch or dry cleaning. But I am not a personal assistant to be passed around. He said "Well, I could make you." And I said "And I can quit." Found a much better job almost immediately.
The only recourse is to speak to the other chiropractor. If they are partners in the practice, then the other chiropractor would be paying the equivalent of one receptionist but is currently only receiving the work of half a receptionist. They may not be pleased to be paying half the nanny for their partner. But if the other chiropractor is an employee or not an equal partner, then there is no recourse and she should smile, go along and find another job asap.
