These images may have little in common, but transmit a widely shared yet subtle sensation — they’re the unsettling reminders of a dark and strange twist in the reality we find ourselves in today. And unfortunately folks, it’s also a pretty bleak one.
Let me present to you the 'Boring Dystopia' subreddit, an online community dedicated to "chronicling how Advanced Capitalist Society is not only dystopic, but also incredibly boring." In case you've never heard of this term, it was coined by the late British academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher. It refers to the feeling of unease in the form of mildly coercive signs that flourish in a late-stage capitalist society.
We at Bored Panda scoured the online group and handpicked some of the most vivid examples that illustrate there's something not quite right with this world. To learn more about boring dystopia, we reached out to Macon Holt, Ph.D., a researcher at Copenhagen Business School and author of Pop Music and Hip Ennui: A Sonic Fiction of Capitalist Realism. He told Bored Panda this phrase is related to Mark Fisher’s critical term capitalist realism, "which he used to describe the pervasive belief that capitalism is the only viable form of the political, social and cultural organization following the end of the cold war."
It may be difficult to wrap your head around the term "boring dystopia" but once you get the hang of it, chances are, you’ll start seeing it everywhere. "[It] is more about the aesthetic experience of living in capitalist realism at a point in time when the system appears ever more unsustainable (ecologically, [politically], and in terms of increasing inequality and decreasing standards of living) but in which no other way to organize society has emerged," Holt explained.

Holt mentioned exciting movies like Blade Runner or The Matrix from the '80s and '90s that offered depictions of going out with a bang, "But as the years in which those images came around, none of the dreams or nightmares came true," he said.
"Instead, space travel is becoming the hobby of billionaires while they ignore the ecological crises they could perhaps help with, AI and robots seem either to be surveilling us while they vacuum or when we click on a link, and the VR worlds of the metaverse are just ways to charge us more rent for spaces that we can't actually occupy."

Typically, the most evident samples of boring dystopia are senseless ads and ordinary images of broken machinery. When asked about other examples of this experience, Holt mentioned we can find it in bureaucracy, "like the terms of a rental contract that forbid tenants to use cooking oil on the stove, so a landlord can keep the deposit if a single drop is found on the extractor fan hood."
"NFTs are perhaps a good example of boring dystopia,” he continued. "If a sci-fi writer were to dream up a situation in which people paid the money they had earned doing actual work for a certificate of verification that they own a .jpeg of a bored ape, their editor would probably say the world the story depicted would be too depressing to publish."

He also noted that outlets such as Bored Panda draw attention to the conditions of contemporary boring dystopia in its name and try to break up the monotony of the everyday. "In boring dystopia, people are often anxious about work, housing and the future of the planet, and there's very little to alleviate this. As Mark Fisher put it 'No one is bored, everything is boring.'"

"Depending on who you ask, it can be argued that in some particular corners of the world at a certain point in history when there was a relatively strong welfare state and high tax regime, capitalism was part of what brought a good number of people out of poverty."

And the answers to these questions have been, largely, deferred to the market for a long time, which has produced a world of increasing inequality, anti-democratic power structures, ecological ruin and boredom," he told us.

Just today I had this problem with Purolator saying I wasn't home when I was and they didn't even leave the slip. And people are like oh it's not a big deal. Yes, my package isn't vital, but what if it was? These companies need to do better by doing their actual jobs properly.
Sorry, worst one is fedex , it’s always an expected delivery date, you wait all day, running late…new date…you wait with doors open… no one was home.. new delivery date. It runs into a loop 3xs before actually being delivered, this same scenario happened in several occasions to the point that if s company only uses fedex for delivery service, I do not even bother ordering anything
FedEx: Missed delivery because "business is closed". I called them and suggested they use a fire extinguisher on his lower garments as the address was residential, a signature was not required and I was 20' from the door at the time of the "failed" delivery. Nothing urgent, though.

During the pandemic, my pharmacy offered to FedEx my prescriptions. This worked out fine except for the one that was a controlled substance and had to be signed for. I downloaded the FedEx app so I could leave instructions to please CALL me as I have hearing problems and cannot hear people knocking. My instructions were completely ignored and I would have to go pick up the prescription at a FedEx center.
They did the same s**t to me! Lied and said they couldn't deliver because nobody was home. I was literally waiting at the door all f*****g day and not a single person nor truck came to my home. It was a Friday. I had a huge feeling that the driver decided they would lie to cut their shift early for the weekend. Complete b******t. The drivers in my area lately have all been really young 20 somethings literally BLASTING music which is fine as long as you turn it down to reasonable levels when in a tiny court, and you're not playing uncensored rap music cussing about nasty s**t in front of little kids... Don't get me wrong, I love Andre Nickatina and Mac Dre, Migos etc but when you're on the clock delivering to families and you literally have to shout over the music...it's not cool...
This seems to be common with that company. It's happened to me too, on more than one occasion, but at least it wasn't meds I was waiting for. Most likely the driver either ran out of hours or just couldn't be bothered delivering the parcel, but there isn't a tick box for either of those so they put that you were out. Even complaining to UPS gets you nowhere. Call the sender immediately and get them to sort it out. They are the ones who will take their contract somewhere else if there are enough complaints, and they are more likely to care about you and the missing drugs.
My apartment complex has a package room inside the clubhouse. We also have package boxes in the section with the mailboxes, outside the clubhouse. We also have fully accessible buildings with outdoor walkways, and a front door to our apartment. So why did the FedEx guy not deliver my package because "business was closed". This is not a business, it's an apartment. If the clubhouse is closed, come to my door! The incompetence is enraging.

I have been sitting in my living room and have caught the UPS man returning to his truck. He did not even get my package out. He had stopped in front of my house and ran down to my door to put a not home sticker on it not even attempting delivery.

I've had this same problem with the USPS. They will not deliver packages to me. They will only deliver to the main mailbox for the Manager's office ( mobile home park). If the package is too big to fit I get a notice that I have to pick it up at the post office. Then the post office says it's not there, it's out with the carrier. Like playing package tag. So I arranged for my meds to be delivered by UPS and that has worked out for me. Where I live they will deliver to my door even if I'm not home. It looks like this person lives in a gated community that requires a passcode and that makes it more difficult. It sounds like they didn't even knock on the door.
I depend on my insulin being delivered and they don't give a damn. Now I have to get on the bus and go get it with ice packs in my purse.
Shame. In Germany 🇩🇪 you of course stay in hospital throughout your whole chemo therapy cycle, see a doctor every day, and get help from nurses and psychotherapists. I am so glad, that I don‘t live in the US.
I almost cried with joy after my company got rid of the mandatory “Express Scripts for maintenance drugs” requirement under our health plan. Even though insulin is “life sustaining “ as opposed to “maintenance” my insurer insisted I get it through Express Scripts who I had so many issues with- they actually laughed at me when I called them concerned about the condition of my insulin since it took 3 days to get to me and the ice packs were melted and warm and the insulin box was soggy. Basically Express Scripts is garbage - they typically use either FedEx or Canada Post (!!!) here in Canada.

As sad and time sensitive as this example is (and yes, I must admit I hear a lot of complaints about GLS/UPS/Amazon drivers "but not youuuu") .... Everytime I am yelled at by clients "I was at home alllllll day" I counter ask " Loud music, hair dryer or vacuum? In the roof or cellar or backyard? Zoom meeting with head phones?" --- They tend to get very quiet after that. My appendix was in the process of bursting yet I had to sit waiting in a shi**y plastic chair in front of a woman to fill out forms on a messed-up computer before being eventually wheeled back for emergency surgery. Had to wait for her computer to go back online with the internal system before I could "complete the intake paperwork" - ie: deal with the financials. I didn't, and still don't, have insurance...
All of this was heartbreaking. This is our reality. What are we leaving for the next generations? Woke? Are we really?
