30 Examples Of Modern Day Dystopia That Might Inspire You To Change Something (New Pics)
In 1982, ‘Blade Runner’ introduced us to a bleak vision of what the year 2019 might look like: evil corporations rule the world, the planet is polluted beyond repair, and people suffer in destitute conditions.
But although 2019 passed without any androids running amok, we still live in a world not far from that idea. And it seems that this dystopic future has arrived sooner than expected.
Bored Panda has found the perfect subreddit that shows us examples of how we are living in this strange reality. r/ABoringDystopia holds a mirror up to our society and makes us feel uneasy over the influence of capitalism on our lives.
We’ve allowed these disturbing issues to happen without us realizing it, almost to the point that it’s become predictable. And this is where the term ‘boring dystopia’ comes from. You can read more about it from Bored Panda here and here.

The dying patient has good reason to worry about the costs. Some who were hospitalized for COVID and survived got the double whammy of residual health issues plus THE BILL. Hundreds of thousands of dollars owed for their treatment. Wonder how many of the 600,000+ deaths were people who opted to die without going to the hospital, instead of leave their loved ones bankrupt?
The posts shared here emphasize how greed and a lack of empathy affect the daily lives of people worldwide. With the cost of living seemingly out of reach for the everyday person, we have to ask ourselves: how did things get so bad?
I asked John A. Lancaster what we should expect from the economy in the near future. Being a political commentator who gives straightforward and concise takes on the most controversial issues, John told Bored Panda, "Assuming there won't be any more lockdowns, a significant issue to worry about is the return of 'Industry Policy', which is basically the government subsidizing certain industries in hopes of spurring development and innovation in those industries."

Worked fast food in the pandemic. Its was horrid. You get yelled n cussed at for things you didnt do. Go 5-8 hrs no break mask on in hot conditions (your lucky to have 1 min to get water) Got yelled at for "believing the pandemic is real" and yelled at for having my mask below my nose (for 1 min to get fresh air) by a MASKLESS customer Not a hero. I saw this before and it's heartbreaking. This is the reality for a lot of people who were already struggling or barely getting by before the COVID outbreak. That's why it's infuriating to see people recording themselves walking into a business without wearing a mask and giving the employees a rough time. I saw a video where the server at Denny's said she had had enough and was going to quit on the spot when the people refused to wear a mask.

These officials are going to get reimbursed with tax revenue regardless of how their subsides pan out financially."
John considers that 'Industrial Policy' is: "an extremely inefficient way to boost innovation that wastes immense amount of money and resources that would have been best left up to private firms."
He also drives home the point about where the control of money lies. John notes that: "It's important to note that government funds come from the tax paying public. Whenever there is a push to 'stimulate' new jobs, money is being taken from the public and directed as bureaucrats and elected officials see fit. When this happens wealth is not being created, but redistributed."

Third world didn't use to mean poor. It was countries involved in the Cold War, with America and Russia being First World, their allies being Second World, and neutral (or flat out sick of their crap) nations were Third World.

I heard before that El Salvador has been handling it well, but I didn’t know they were that amazing. As for the US, I always kind of suspected that the reason you guys lashed out the celebrities so much was because even though you didn’t like what they were doing, you still perceived them as more willing to listen than the Trump administration. Based on that heading, it looks like I was right.

The term 'third world' needs to be done away with. There are many countries not as technologically advanced as certain nations in the western world but this term is rooted in colonialist tropes and white supremacy. For centuries we've been referred to as 'the third world' even though a white western nation stole the resources of our land to build their 'first world' country. Just because some countries are lagging in technological advancement or innovation does not mean they'll never catch up. It also doesn't mean their wonderful and diverse societies should be designated inferior. I know the one tweeting this is himself from a country stereotyped as such so my comment isn't directed at him but at those who casually say 'even third world countries have it better' 'we've become a third world country.' Trust me, most so called third world countries have more hospitality, kindness, thankfulness and a spirit of giving than many developed nations although it's almost never highlighted.

I love the restaurants I have seen offering free food for kids (Golden Corral of all places did at the start until they weren't allowed because of exposure risk) My school system did free meals for breakfast and snack, and started out bussing it around until they basically ran out of money for staffing and gas to do so, and they offered free childcare in the building provided by staff to essential workers.
So businesses under the 'Industry Policy' profited massively, whilst the people that needed help the most, struggled to survive and make ends meet.
Regarding the government's control of the finances, John also raised an important question: "If the general public would've preferred to spend their money in different ways than the government, then how beneficial are the government ventures and what was potentially sacrificed for those ventures?"
You can see from the ‘boring dystopia’ subreddit exactly how people across the globe have been affected. There’s the illogical ideas put forward by these businesses that are meant to help people, but do anything but that. And astounding hypocrisy of the rich and powerful.

Average wage for a nurse in UK is £34,000. They are getting a 3% pay rise this year on top. That is double the minimum wage and £10,000 more than the average UK worker. Some nurses are paid over £100,000. But hey, don't let facts get in the way....

This is a bigger deal than you think. Those things aren't just long, they are torture to read. Imagine the most boring and poorly written text-book you have ever had to read. Where you have to re-read every paragraph because "what they hell was that actually saying?"..., and then go 10x worse.

Always contact the billing company after a hospital stay and say you want to itemize your bill. Your cost will be reduced because they end up removing ridiculously priced charges like the $50 toothbrush they provided.

A National Health system can be set up to be paid for through our taxes—-which is actually way more equitable than the flat rate you pay for insurance through your company. With the flat fee, everyone pays the same amount, even if they make vastly different salaries—-the $8.75/hr janitor is paying the same flat fee as the CEO making 100 times the janitor’s salary, even though that amount takes a much larger bite out of the janitor’s paycheck than the CEO’s. With the taxed payment, everyone pays the same percentage, but the janitor, though paying their fair share, is not paying the same dollar amount as the CEO.

In New Zealand health care is free. Friend just spent 8 weeks in hospital. One 6 hour surgery. One 4 hour surgery 2 days later. Many scans, tests etc. In Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit for 3 weeks, then rehab unit. Bill?...nothing. All free.

People in US think they are getting a deal with their employee health care. But that is $6000 a year a single person is not getting paid in wages because the employer is paying their share of premiums instead. If they have family coverage, the employer share was an average of over $14,000 a year in 2019. Then the worker has to pay their own share of the premiums on top of that. THEN you have a usually hefty deductible and have to pay co-pays and co-insurance of 20% of the balance, every time you get medical care. Because employer costs are rarely revealed to employees and their direct costs are hidden in the online pay stubs they never look at, they are not required to really think about what they are losing. Money you never get is a lot easier to ignore than money you have to actually pay out of your pocket.
It makes you think twice about who’s running the world and if they should really have this much power. These are some of our top selections from the subreddit. These examples are a cautionary reminder to reflect on society, and question what we should consider the norm. We hold the power to make a change to our society, so we should make it a positive one.

A bank will lend you money based on their confidence that you can repay the loan - it is based on income, job stability, credit score, and your debt to income ratio. It has nothing to do with how much you pay for rent. That said - I applaud your ambition to buy your own place! Please don't quit trying... ask your bank why they turned you down, then start working on that deficiency. (poor credit? too many outstanding debts? et...) Once you have identified the issue, you can fix it. Good luck !!

Also don’t stop after just one denial. I just bought a home after getting denied 3 times in a row. Real estate agents sometimes know the easiest bank to get a loan from. Also try to find a job in an area with cheaper homes. Went from a 160k 800 sq ft living space to a 80k 1800 sq ft living space because of location.

If where you live is anything like Auckland, the places that are $950/month on paper are crapholes where the amount of repair work that’s needed, plus the rent you still have to pay to the owner of the apartment building, pushes them right back into unaffordable territory. I saved a deposit and got told I’d be approved for an amount of money that would technically cover the cheapest apartments around here, and then discovered that those so-called $950/month mortgages came with exorbitant hidden costs. Those who say it’s just banks being irrational are VASTLY underestimating how much other bullshit is keeping property purchases out of our reach.

Current minimum wage is quite a step backwards since the time of Henry Ford, who once coined the saying: "Make the best quality of goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible. I managed to escape poverty, though I'm not rich. At a family meeting, my cousin asked me what the best thing is to not be worried about money. My reply was "While I'm not rich enough to never worry, at least I'm at a point where I can have principles. I can boycott a company even if it costs me a little more, I can decide to refuse to work for a company with questionable morale, I can wait for a better job interview if I have doubts about the ones I met etc..".

I live paycheck to paycheck, single mom for 9 years. But I did manage to sell all.of my belongings and start over 3000 miles away from where I grew up. After 2 years of struggling here I just landed a starting salary of 70k plus bonuses. I'll be able to actually have a savings account. I might not have to drive a 16 year old gas guzzling truck. I'll be able to take my prescription medication daily!

I once had a man from a firm tell me to come do an interview for a job he knew I was not qualified for and I had told him as much. I had to cycle about an hour to get there - no public transport, no car. He told me ' the cycle trip would do me good'. I cycled for an hour, got soaking wet and got told I was not qualified as soon as the interview started. I had to go as refusing could cost me my unemplyment benefit, which I couldn't afford. The power these people think they can wield over the unemployed. Psychopathic is the word I would use for these kind of people.

I interned for a company that had a policy that any former intern that applied for a job automatically got an interview. I realized pretty quickly this sucked because I'd pay for a train ticket to NYC for an interview and immediately realize they had no intention of hiring me or even considering me for the job. Sometimes I even knew who they had already decided to hire. I think the company thought they were helping former interns by giving them "interview experience" but it really sucked when I had to pay $80 for round trip train tickets to the city each time. I quickly stopped applying for jobs with them.

I was once at an interview, the interviewer never had read my resume and asked me "so, why are you here?" and when I told him the position, he told me "oh no, we found what we need already, there was no need for you to come"... I had a job already so it was not too bad but I was not happy to waste my time.

Don't forget the fact that Americans are more than willing to preach but no so willing to practice what they preach. RCA used to be one of, if not the, pinnacle of consumer electronics in the United States. RCA has been out of business for 35 years now. I seriously doubt that it had anything to do with shilling inferior products and everything to do with Americans being able to get same quality or better products from one of the Asian country manufacturers.

Even if someone is working at a job that produces without skill, they should still be compensated for time and effort. The only jobs that don't require specific skills are maybe seat fillers or movie extras though. Blue collar jobs usually require hard skills more than other jobs do.

As a former server I agree, most people cant handle remembering 45 things you need while carrying arms full of breakable plates and drinks, while tons of people are talking to you, asking questions, and for more items to remember "when you get a chance"... And the base pay is $5/hour... I have a bachelor's degree btw but in SW Florida where I am waiting tables paid (pre-pandemic) better than what I went to school for...

When I was younger, I worked at McDonald's, and my favorite task was to educate new employees. You can't just put anyone in any workstation and leave them there. It takes weeks to be able to handle it on your own, and it takes months to be good at it. Those weeks and months costs money, with two people doing one job. Appreciate the ones who ARE good at it, and you won't have to pay as much for the Buy One, Pay for Two.

While I absolutely do not dispute that racism and hatred is rampant in America, it is important to note that this is a BRITISH newspaper (zoom in if you don't believe me, an address is clearly listed as being in London and we do not call the defense table the "dock".) Omg my husband transferred government jobs (usps to us mint) and he feels guilty because he said the job feels to easy. His previous job worked him over 70hrs a week. His current job is 5 days a week with any mandatory overtime equally distributed and weekends off unless you want to volunteer for overtime if it's available.

Some benches are indeed designed to keep away the homeless, mostly by adding dividers or uncomfortable edges to keep people from lying down on them. However, these are none of those, these are just standing aids ("leaning benches").. So a real problem, but the image does not match.

These are actually stand-up benches designed for people to lean on if they have a hard time getting back up (like the elderly or folks with disabilities). We have them in my city, and people were making a big fuss about it when they were introduced, but they are used and actually do help a lot of folks.

Years from now, thru no fault of your own you may find yourself out there. you developed a mental illness such that you can't work and no disability for you. And no safety nets because people think the answer to your problem is "Go for a walk, you'll feel better. You're middle aged and you got laid off. No one is going to hire you at that age. You go thru all your savings and retirement just to manage and you're not too far from losing your home. Addiction is an interesting thing. You say that can never happen to you. You never know who you will find out on the street. One time when a group of us were out trying to help, we came across a man who had won a bronze medal for our country in the Olympics. You just never know. It may be you needing all the help.

My insurance doesn't "offer" prescriptions by mail, they FORCE me to get them that way because it's cheaper for them. They buy and sell cheaper generic drugs so they don't want to pay if I go to a local pharmacy and the drug is more expensive there. It's ridiculous, especially after our postal service was slowed down. I call my doctor for a prescription, they take a few days to get around to it, they contact my mail pharmacy, they take a week or two to fill it, then the mail can take another week or more. You have ti know weeks in advance you're going to run out.

Oh my goodness UPS is the WORST. I am aghast at the fact that they are used to deliver life-saving medicines; did not even think about that. I only had to ship a phone back to a company I worked for and it took me hours of phone calls over the course of a week because they flat out refused to come by when they were supposed to and then would lie about it and claim they tried to come by. It was only AFTER we cancelled our delivery with them that they miraculously showed up the next day, ready to take the phone.

It looks like a two-way speaker system that you can use to dial to a certain apartment. Like a vestibule/lobby some places have. You dial the apt you want and they buzz you to go through a second door. You can also get your mail in the same area sometimes.

Yet the company now (at start of Delta variant, looking fwd to Lambda variant) makes me go to the office at least two days, where I will work 8 hrs (and not a minute more, trust me), will be worried about people coughing on me, will spend two hours in traffic....I can go on

My son broke his arm. While waiting in a hospital bed for surgery to pin his bones back together, a nurse brought him some pain killers. While handing them over, she dropped one on the floor, bent down, picked it up, rubbed it off on her sleeve, and gave it to him. When I objected, she said we'd be charged for it AS WELL AS the replacement!!!

In Brevard County schools, as a sub, I was asked to leave my keys with the secretary. I refused and told them I would just go home and they could find another sub. The other lemmings (sorry, subs) handed over their keys. At the end of the day (I was not sent home) the lemmings found out that their keys were in the locked desk of a secretary that had left due to illness. They sat in the office waiting on a janitor. Worse yet, in Brevard County, Florida school bus drivers are not allowed in the teacher's lounge to use the bathroom. We cannot have the "unskilled" toileting with the college grads.

I once brought my young child to the emergency room (US) after being scalded with hot water. Thankfully the burns turned out to be superficial. People are missing the point on both sides there. As with so many things, the bad guy isn't who you think it is. I was a small landlord at the start of the pandemic. Had 4 rent houses. They were in decent condition because I had them built new. The rent was more than I really felt comfortable charging. But I really couldn't charge less as the cost of insurance on the property immediately ate more than 50%. I even paid all utilities, and that was merely a fraction of the amount to have the property insured - which was required by the financing I took to build the houses. I eventually had to sell the rent houses (I did, at a loss) or let the bank seize them. If you find an industry people are complaining about - healthcare, rental property, cattle farming - I will just about guarantee the place all the money is actually going is an insurance company or bank.

My mum inherited a couple of business places (a butcher and a small bar) and halved the rent for them during the pandemic. The previous bar owner got cancer and had trouble paying and she not only allowed her to pay late but forgave her several months of rent. I am proud of her. She cannot find a job and at her age nobody will hire her so this is her only income. But she is a kind person.

I rent my little flat (moved in with the boyfriend) and rent covers only the mortgage, insurance and lease. I make no profit at all and also pay all the maintenance and unexpected fees. If I don't get rent paid, I would have not to eat that month.

I worked for TSA at the height of the pandemic. A federal officer for homeland security and they didn't even consider us an "essential employee" while most of our coworkers were contracting the virus and dying from it.

What the AF? Is Fred Meyer afraid that people so desperate to eat that they are willing to salvage food from a dumpster will sue them if anything happens? What other possible explanation could there be for (up to) 15 police arriving to 'protect' rotting food that could help hundreds of starving families? F that. Boycott.

In the U.S. it's usually two things: It's the health department that says they can be sued if someone gets sick from eating the food. The other thing is they have to charge it off as a loss, which means the company has to throw it in the trash because it can't be sold for the same price as it cost. So in short, it's a massive cost to give it away to the needy and they get to recoup the cost if it's charged out as a loss. BUT the government lets them write it off their taxes either way so I don't get why they don't just have a huge food drive. That will win them loyal customers for life at least and at most, keep someone from starving.

That's not true in Europe. The number of rules, regulations and laws that protect the renter are enormous. Want to kick out renters because they makes too much noise? First build up a dossier that proves it. And no, 2 weeks of monitoring isn't enough. Want to kick out renters because they are wrecking your property? As long as they pay rent, there's nothing you can do. Want to kick out renters because they don't pay rent? Sure, take them to court, be prepared for a 1 to 2 year legal battle and hopefully you'll get an eviction order.

I'm honestly terrified what the world will be like when I'm older (currently 21). When I'm now entering adulthood, I realize I underestimated how hard it is to make a living, and how stressful it is to find an apartment I can actually AFFORD. Its f*****g terrifying knowing I'll be living like this for the rest of my life, supposing it doesn't get worse.

The rent thing isn't only there, my friend right now is looking for a place in the city, he is on a decent wage around 30k a year but because he's doing it on his own, even on that wage he can only find small places to rent, like studio flats and he has 2 dogs so that can't happen, he will end up going further out away from where he works, to a not so busy part just so he can live comfortably.

Millenials are not in power, they might be in low management positions but CEOs and CFOs are on average early Gen X. Also, changes don't happen overnight and now we feel the results of legislations and laws that were made a decade or two ago when boomers had the majority of voting power. Boomers voted for capitalism as it is today. There are many poor boomers but as a generation they caused today's situation. The US lawmakers by age are boomers on average. I have nothing against boomers but I can't deny they are still "driving the bus".
