Damaged vending machines. "No change" messages on broken ATMs. Pepsi ads sponsoring diabetes research. These images may have little in common, but transmit a widely shared yet subtle sensation — they’re the unsettling reminders of a dark and strange twist in the reality we find ourselves in today. And unfortunately folks, it’s also a pretty bleak one.

Let me present to you the 'Boring Dystopia' subreddit, an online community dedicated to "chronicling how Advanced Capitalist Society is not only dystopic, but also incredibly boring." In case you've never heard of this term, it was coined by the late British academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher. It refers to the feeling of unease in the form of mildly coercive signs that flourish in a late-stage capitalist society.

We at Bored Panda scoured the online group and handpicked some of the most vivid examples that illustrate there's something not quite right with this world. Continue scrolling and be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comment section below. And after you’re done reading this piece, take a look at our earlier compilations full of dystopian madness right here, here, and here.

It's so well-written as well, sounds like a passage from a dystopian novel, but the dystopia is our reality.

To learn more about boring dystopia, we reached out to Macon Holt, Ph.D., a researcher at Copenhagen Business School and author of Pop Music and Hip Ennui: A Sonic Fiction of Capitalist Realism. He told Bored Panda this phrase is related to Mark Fisher’s critical term capitalist realism, "which he used to describe the pervasive belief that capitalism is the only viable form of the political, social and cultural organization following the end of the cold war."

It may be difficult to wrap your head around the term "boring dystopia" but once you get the hang of it, chances are, you’ll start seeing it everywhere. "[It] is more about the aesthetic experience of living in capitalist realism at a point in time when the system appears ever more unsustainable (ecologically, [politically], and in terms of increasing inequality and decreasing standards of living) but in which no other way to organize society has emerged," Holt explained.

It's sickening how screwed up the economy is. All we can do is hope it gets better in time, but unfortunately, that seems like wishful thinking. I'm so used to living in apartments (and now a trailer in a trailer park because rents for apartments are ridiculously high) that I have no idea what it's like to live in a house. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough. But only maybe.

Although most of us grew up imagining a dystopian future full of terrifying end-times scenes, brutal police states, and decadent rulers, it is more likely to consist of mundane and unappealing scenarios. Holt mentioned exciting movies like Blade Runner or The Matrix from the '80s and '90s that offered depictions of going out with a bang, "But as the years in which those images came around, none of the dreams or nightmares came true," he said.

"Instead, space travel is becoming the hobby of billionaires while they ignore the ecological crises they could perhaps help with, AI and robots seem either to be surveilling us while they vacuum or when we click on a link, and the VR worlds of the metaverse are just ways to charge us more rent for spaces that we can't actually occupy."

Typically, the most evident samples of boring dystopia are senseless ads and ordinary images of broken machinery. When asked about other examples of this experience, Holt mentioned we can find it in bureaucracy, "like the terms of a rental contract that forbid tenants to use cooking oil on the stove, so a landlord can keep the deposit if a single drop is found on the extractor fan hood."

"NFTs are perhaps a good example of boring dystopia,” he continued. "If a sci-fi writer were to dream up a situation in which people paid the money they had earned doing actual work for a certificate of verification that they own a .jpeg of a bored ape, their editor would probably say the world the story depicted would be too depressing to publish."

He also noted that outlets such as Bored Panda draw attention to the conditions of contemporary boring dystopia in its name and try to break up the monotony of the everyday. "In boring dystopia, people are often anxious about work, housing and the future of the planet, and there's very little to alleviate this. As Mark Fisher put it 'No one is bored, everything is boring.'"

Boring dystopia tells us that while capitalism is often labeled as the most efficient economic system out there, it is not necessarily geared toward human flourishing. "Depending on who you ask, it can be argued that in some particular corners of the world at a certain point in history when there was a relatively strong welfare state and high tax regime, capitalism was part of what brought a good number of people out of poverty."

However, other people will point to the historical and contemporary violence, the destruction of the environment, and the inequality and exploitation required to make such "market dynamism" possible. According to Holt, capitalism has only ever been efficient at producing more capital. But "capital doesn't care who holds it. How it is made, what it is spent on or invested in and who gets to decide these things have always been political questions. And the answers to these questions have been, largely, deferred to the market for a long time, which has produced a world of increasing inequality, anti-democratic power structures, ecological ruin and boredom," he told us.

For some, pictures pointing out our dull dystopian reality could be a source of entertainment. For others, they may create a daunting sense of a lost future. Speaking of the latter one, Holt said that the material things that make people feel that way (skyrocketing housing prices, student-loan debts, insane medical bills — the list goes on) stem from actions at various levels of society. "It is just what happens when the interests of people with power align," he added. "Boring dystopia is the experience of our faith in the future having been betrayed. There is not a quick fix. Instead, to quote Donna Haraway, we have to "stay with the trouble" if we want to commit to a future we can flourish in."

"One piece of advice that is really easy for coming to terms with and starting to imagine a way out of boring dystopia would be to read Fisher's Capitalist Realism: Is there no Alternative? It is an incredibly accessible piece of critical theory and is only about 86 pages long. It is a great jumping-off point for finding out more. Read it with friends and talk about it after. It is a great way to feel less alone in a world that seems to be ever more isolating," Holt concluded.

Wtf??? How did they ever think This was a good idea?? “We don’t want babies to be murdered”? Yeah well the person who wants it probably can’t A) can’t financial support a child B) not in a mental state to care for a child C) went through trauma and ended up being pregnant. So the problem is helping those people. Not murdering babies. You are saying we need better mental health clinics. I agree. Not funding abortion clinics. Their are programs set up to make giving for adoption easy and free. They need to be way better yes. Abortion is so common. Extremely common, and needs to be more regulated. A ton of women loose mental stability after getting an abortion. It is something internally that haunts them. Drugs are regulated. suicide is regulated. Why? Its their choice right? Because I care about them. Abortion is the answer for rape and health reasons, otherwords it is more hurtful to society and the women to have the abortion.

Is this the one where abortion is banned after 5 weeks or something like that? It infuriates me so much. Hardly anyone knows they are pregnant that early unless they have been planning and have stocked up on tests waiting for the positive results. People with birth control can still get pregnant and not even realize until 3 months! Cycles can be irregular and some people really don't have early pregnancy symptoms. Is the state now going to deliver 30 pregnancy tests, free of charge, to every household every month? No. They'd rather it be a witch hunt. I'm not pro abortion but I've had one. It was the best choice at the time. It forever changed my life. But my baby didn't have to suffer this cruel world. You do what's best for you. But f**k politicians and lawmakers that make us criminals because we didn't test positive fast enough. Black market abortions will rise again and that means more deaths because of how dangerous they are.

@Jodie, even better! Those who have no problem spouting that women who become pregnant should carry to full term, despite the fact that it's against the woman's wishes, become the legal guardian of that born child for 18 years+. They are not allowed to adopt the child out, they are responsible for the wellbeing of the child without any financial help (as they're CLEARLY not concerned about the mother's ability to support the child after birth), and they are RESPONSIBLE for the wellbeing of the mother after birth (because they had to go thorough the, now deemed, traumatic experience of pregnancy when they themselves never wanted to continue with it in the first place.) I will bet you their sugar honey iced tea will stop dead in its tracks if they had to take over the responsibility of unwanted pregnancies/births that they pushed onto mothers.

We should add Oklahoma. They're desperately trying to copy their neighbors to the south AND eliminating that really jagged part of Texas will make it so much easier for the fence builders.

I'll be devil's advocate here. I understand their pro-life position. When you beleive life is precious, you want to protect it. Even if kid is fruit of a rape, it's still its own individual who deserves to live. Back to reality, annoyingly it's a huge hypocrecy when you cut social welfare, deny abortion to someone's who own life at stake, throw people in prison for minor offenses, attempt to execute major offenses. Life is "precious" as long you don't start living it.

Banning abortions only bans safe legal abortions. Our governor has lost his mind.

Mostly men. Wonder how many of them have got a women pregnant via affair and paid for those abortions. Or did they just pretend they never knew them once a pregnancy happened?

I'm quite certain that their side pieces, mistresses, and female relatives who need an abortion with have no problem getting one.

I'd be interested to know how many of the men's lovers have had abortions. I'd also be interested to know if any of the women have actually been pregnant when they didn't want to be, so they would have an idea of what they're talking about.

How come a group of 80% men gets to decide on women's bodies? Also, if they ban abortions, force men to take care of the children they produce too.

As a Texas-born, I am deeply ashamed and angry that all of these self-righteous a**holes think they can control women and their lives. If a woman signs on to this stupidity, no problem, but if you force everyone to do it this way, you are looking at a revolution down the pike folks. And you thought the Alamo was bad?

My body. Not yours. You lot of sanctimonious rich p***KS. Why should you allow more suffering for women and girls? There is less Christianity in your decisions than self-aggrandisement.

Of course, majority white men making decisions for women. I pointed out white as a lot of young POC become parents when they can't actually care for their child at that age, or themselves because dingbats like this give them no choice. Plus POC are disadvantaged a lot, so raising a child at 16 when you can't get a job because of your skin, having dreads, braids, etc. Yeah seems like a very safe idea!

Looks to be about 60 people there. About 10 are women. So, is it the general rule that the percentage of women who are brainless conservatives is about 17%?

I'm never doing that heart thing again. I literally feel nauseated looking at this.. Republicans only care about power. Power over every single thing they possibly can including WOMENS BODIES. How about let's regulate ED drugs & make them illegal since they can cause sexual assault. "I already took a pill you can't just leave me like this"

To be fair, they are prioritizing the well being of the unborn fetus. I think it's a mistake on their part. The right of the fetus to stay alive is not superior to the right of the mother to control her own body. But I do see the point in saying that if the FETUS had a "choice," it would want to live.

Abortion is murder. period. "Fetus" is just as much a group of cells as you are. It is a human being. All the hypocrites out there who say "you dont care about the baby after", I would argue that you dont care. You think killing the kids is better than letting them have a chance at life? Even a hard life is better than being murdered. I want to help their quality of life, and funding abortion clinics is not helping them. I understand there are times when abortion is needed but 94% of the time is not for health reasons, or rape etc. Abortion leads to sadness, and misery for the mother, and precautions are needed on that. Do we try to prevent drug overdose or suicide? YES. Why? If it is their own body and own choice then why? Because it is the right thing, and healthy thing to do.

A fetus is not a child. An abortion is not "killing a child". The fetus cannot survive outside the woman's body - it is literally a part of her body and, as such, should be subject to HER wishes, not YOURS.

There's a stranger who needs your organs to live. May I harvest them now, please? I'll leave you enough to stay alive but your body will be forever altered. No? Then why are you okay with forcing others to devote their organs against their consent?
