5 Most Common Misconceptions About Bisexuality Explained Through Adorable Kitten Illustrations
178Kviews
As humans, we want to feel seen, heard, validated and represented. Findings from the Center For Disease Control indicates that bisexual people may comprise the largest single group in the LGB community for both women and men. However, many people out there still believe that bisexuality does not really exist.
To combat the misconceptions about bisexuality, the Chinese artist behind the company Paws Of Pride collaborated LGBTQ activist influencer Jessie Page, to illustrate bisexuality erasure with adorable kittens. The sweet comic strip sends a message of inclusivity and explains why we “aren’t labels,” because who doesn’t love some bisexual felines!
Paws of Pride attached an important caption along with the illustrations

“Bisexuality isn’t more complicated than that – ‘attraction to more than one gender.’ It’s not incompatible with identifying as gay, either. Bisexuality is proof that sexuality isn’t “either/or,” it’s “and,” writes the Bisexuality Index, and without a clear cut definition, people often disregard bisexuality as delegitimate altogether.
In addition to bisexuality Paws of Pride supports all LGTBQ members with their adorable illustrations

Bisexuality has been a topic of contention and confusion, even among the LGTBQ community. Even polls attempting to measure how many people identify as bisexual have been re-examined for accuracy based on the language used. Sometimes there is a distinction in language between behavior and how people identify that leads to different results. Just because someone exhibits these behaviors does not always mean they self-identify as bisexual.

Arguments of whether or not bisexuality is as valid has led to bisexual erasure, the “existence or legitimacy of bisexuality (either in general or in regard to an individual) is questioned or denied outright,” which has become more prominent according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). There are many myths that contribute to the erasure of bisexual people.

While the number of Americans who identify as bisexual is on the rise, according to 2018 data from the General Social Survey (GSS), this is due mainly to women. Bisexual men face a different kind of stigma due to toxic masculinity that assumes men who are bisexual are simply just gay. The result of this form of erasure has been a serious health crisis. A study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found bisexual men are disproportionately affected by HIV, because they are afraid to seek out medical care.

Some people believe that because bisexual people are likely to end up in a relationship with someone of a different gender, this means they are ‘straighter’ when in reality it’s because biphobia and invisibility decrease dating options. LGBTQ people make up an estimated 4.1 percent of the population, and many of the LG people of the community refuse to date bi people due to biphobia, which as a result lessens their options.

I love this post! So many bi people, including me, don’t receive this kind of recognition and I’m glad that they can with this cute artwork!💗💜💙
Recognition for what exactly? For what you sexual preference is? I have absolutely no issue whatsoever with people being bi- or homosexual, good for you and best of luck. I hope you live a happy life. But I simply don’t get the whole “look at me, I’m bi-/gay, shower me with recognition and respect merely because of my sexual preferences.” Just live you life man, and love whoever you love.
"Just live your life man, and love whoever you love" kinda difficult when prejudices still exist, you face homophobia, biphobia or transphobia daily, there are places that restrict your human rights because you're queer or trans, there are places that will kill you if you're queer or trans. But you're right, fuck recognition, just live your life and remain oppressed forever!
Because it’s been a death sentence for so many. I’ve been spat on for holding my boyfriends hand and I was walking in one of the friendliest LGBTQ cities in the world. I’m fucking GAY bro ... let us have our pride because we’ve had to fight for everything else. Its cute kittens cartoons you killjoy breeder waste of space. Go troll somewhere else 👎
Maybe the problem is that people use the word recognition in different ways: to you it might mean "ooooh you're so special because you're bisexual". But to others it means "I recognize that you really ARE attracted to both men and women, and that's perfectly fine, you don't have to change. I recognize that bisexuality DOES exist and is not a phase or being confused, it is a real and valid sexuality. I recognize that the love you feel is beautiful and a reason to rejoice (just like heterosexuality and homosexuality are)." That kind of recognition is very important, because many bisexuals get told bisexuality does not exist or is wrong/disgusting. And that's also the reason queer people need things like Pride day: if you repeatedly get told that your love/sexuality is wrong or disgusting, it makes you feel shame and makes you forget how beautiful your love is (just as beautiful as heterosexuality). So we need a day to celebrate our love, to get rid of the damage from all the criticism.

I get that exposure through parades and cute cartoons, etc., shows other like-minded people, that there's others like you and that it's ok to be exactly who you are. But I hate to break this to you, it's not what's going to change the mind of those bigoted people you're describing. Victoria Bandurko completely agree with you.

It is a normal human need to be recognized for who you authentically are. There is all kinds of notice for straight, gay and even trans, but a lot of times, bi ppl are ignored or discounted. *shrug The thing is, that it is real and legitimate. And Bi people deserve to be counted.
Right, let's see you say that again after you've spent a decade being told you don't exist and you're just confused and you'll grow out of it.

I agree. If a relationships makes both people happy and is not hurting anyone else, then there is nothing wrong with it, and we should just be happy for them.
I don't think I'll ever understand why people care so much. Like...as long as it's consensual, why can't anyone be with anyone they wish to? And do whatever they want with them? I mean it has literally NO impact on my life whatsoever. Cute kittens, though. ;)

how u guys can get children
As others have said there are various ways but also, SHOCK, some people - even straight people - aren't all that fussed about having children. Takes all sorts you know, though it is a shame about the bigots.
Same way as any straight person. Sperm + egg = baby. there are donors, surrogates, and adoption. All of which straight people also make use of to have a family. Don't be ignorant.
Adoption is a magical thing! We can also have sperm/egg donors, or we just don’t have children.
Look, being bi for me means that when I'm attracted to someone (whatever gender) something awakens in me. It is less dependent on their genital parts and more on the person that person is. So, I don't get all the hang up about it all. AND it is not just the straight community that bashes bi people. I have received a LOT of negative comments from lesbians when I revealed I'm bi. To the point, that one of my friends (lesbian) introduced me to her friends as her straight friend, a total denial of how I identify. I was really insulted. And frankly could not understand being introduced by my orientation to begin with. I think the crucial point is that there is a spectrum in sexuality (discussed heavily in the original Kinsey report). So, can we just accept that we will not always understand WHY someone likes who they like, but that they are in their reality to express that as they see fit? Thanks for listening.
beyond cuteness right here
As a bisexual, I love this so much
Bisexuality and homosexuality has been found in more than 1,500 species around the world. Homophobia and biphobia has only been found in one. What was everyone saying about something being "unnatural?"
As a bi person, thank you so much for this post, it made me feel good about myself. There is so much stigma around this topic, but I think people should just mind their own business and let people be who they are! 💗💜💙

Yes we got it the first time you posted this, nobody cares
So, by coincidence, I overheard a coworker making claims how he thinks it's not natural to be gay. I didn't join into the conversation (I ran away to grab a coffee, to not hear them), but sometimes I think "what if homosexuality in men is nature's way of keeping control of population numbers"? That would make the question of female sexuality and bisexuality/queerness a separate matter, though.
My view is this- if it's not natural to be gay how come animals in the wild will do things of a sexual nature together when they are the same gender?
I remember watching an animal documentary once (can't remember the name) it was observing gay animals in nature. The narrator made the comment that these gay couples were looking after a lot of the babies when parents couldn't or were busy, meaning that the groups offspring did much better as a result.
If homosexuality is unnatural because it doesn't help you procreate, then it's also unnatural to: not have sex when you're not feeling like it, not have as much sex as you possibly can, for men to only have sex with one woman instead of every good looking woman they meet, for women to not cheat on their partner with every better-looking/healthier man, using birth control, having sex with an infertile person, stop having children after you've already had 10 kids. Because all these things will make you procreate less than you actually could. Should we ban all those things? Luckily, we are allowed to choose whether we want to procreate or not, and how much, and you can just use a surrogate mother or sperm donor if you want to procreate and you're not straight.

Of course it's not natural to be gay. Natural equals nature. Nature equals reproduction. Gays can't naturally reproduce. Sincerely - Reality
That’s the dumbest shit ever, considering that a significant portion of heterosexuals can’t reproduce. Also everything that happens in nature (aka earth) is natural. Even your cousin parents.

Women are 75% more likely to be bisexual. That's obviously as to why , women are hot, men are ugly creatures with wrinkly balls. So I know why women like women but as to why men like men, I don't know.
Where the hell did you pull that statistic from?
You get your numbers where anti-vaxxers get theirs? Btw, women can be ugly and men can be hot too. Seems you're trying to get shoutouts from the "m'ladies"... smh
I have a friend who’s bisexual and she started sobbing when I showed her this :(
awww
Thank you for these! I am proud to be bi and these comics make prouder!
i want to upvote it more than once but i can't
I love this! So cute
The only bad thing about being bi is the way straight men sexualize female bisexuality. And that’s because men are idiots, not because being bi is bad. I’m not bi, but straight men’s attitude towards female sexuality ruins it for everyone. You end up with fully straight girls pretending to be bi for attention and men who act like pervs any time the subject comes up. I feel sorry for single women who want to find a partner. Cute comics though. The parent ones are adorable.
Dont mean to sound rude..but why is there no mention of the gay community diss for the bisexual one. Alot of gay men for example think bis are in denial or dont want anything to do with them...so there is pressure from both straight and the gay side
Cuteness always works.
I was so depressed and ashamed when I realized/found out that I am bisexual. I cried so much in fear of rejection. But when everyone accepted me, I was so happy and now, it's part of me and I don't hate myself for it anymore.
Am i the only one who ships the two adorable cat couples? Also beautiful art and message!
I'm saving this ilustrations to my computer pisture folder :) Love them
LOVE this!
Aw ^^ this made me really happy, considering that I too am bisexual! People keep assuming bi mean being half gay and half straight- but omegosh. Thank you for the adorable comics to explain!
God I just wish everyone could be open about being who they are. I know the religious side is awful, but.. love is love. You love who you love, and no matter how you try to suffocate the real people underneath the facade you want to believe in, their real self will always shine through twice as strong.
I am bi and back at secondary school I had a crush on one girl and I learnt she was bi as well (she told me). I wanted to go out with her and when she realised I meant it as a date, she flipped out saying: 'Wth, you actually mean it?!' with a horrified face. She only pretended being bi because she thought it was 'cool'...
That is unfortunate.
THIS IS THE BEST
It's like Schrödinger's cat (not dog). We are simultaneously gay and straight. (They explained it a lot better.)
I will from now on refer to myself as a Schrödinger-sexual ;)

These replies proves the authors point..girls/ women are quick to come out as bi..they see it as liberating or empowering. People are all for it..well as long as its female. Where's the support for bi men
I don't really see it in the comments here (although it's been hours since you wrote this, so maybe things changed a lot), but I definitely agree that in society in general there is way more support for bisexual women than for bisexual men. And that is a real problem, we really need more support for bisexual (and gay) men.

Bisexuality is not half gay, half straight? I thought exactly that bisexuality means...
We aren’t half straight or half gay. We are simply 100% bisexual~
Why are people downvoting but not explaining? It's an honest question. :( Here's an answer: some bisexual folk are equally into men or women or nonbinary. Many are noticeably more interested in one gender. Others find that the attraction just works *differently* for different genders, e.g. being more visual or having a type with one or needing to have more of a romantic attraction first. But even for the first type, many (though not all) bisexuals don't like being labelled as half gay and half straight. They see gay and straight as monosexual, so to be half of either is a contradiction in terms and also an attempt to erase them.
Exactly, no one is 50% gay and 50% straight, but a 100% bi
Nope, that’s why bisexual is an unfortunate term. Sexually fluid makes more sense. They just date whoever they like, they aren’t beholden to splitting it equally.

And the artist has it all wrong...being bi doesnt mean you necessarily want to marry a dude and adopt a kid..two daddies are better.. Being bi means you have an attraction. I like dudes..i like women...but it does mean i want to marry a dude...stop confusing it with being gay already
Ok, so I'm straight, I'm solely into guys. That doesn't mean I necessarily want to get married to a guy though. Other straight girls might want to get married. Does that help explain the comic's intention at all?

Yes? Kids have crushes and stuff too. You did.
Yes. And also, cartoons don't have to be aimed at children at all. There's plenty of adults that love cute cartoons.

I'm bisexual but honestly I just don't like this, or stuff similar to this. I believe same sex marriage isn't right, that being said I don't force it on anyone. Stuff like this though, is why everyone keeps pushing it on me to pursue a relationship with another girl. Leave me alone to believe what I want thanks, and I'll do the same with everyone else.
You're bisexual but don't believe same sex marriage is right? What kind of sense does that make? Why would you feel pressured into dating a girl? I'm so confused

Downvotes lol, I mean I'm not really surprised, and while I'm personally unaffected (save it be a little disappointed), but to anyone who'll listen, I'd like to show just what a double standard is being held here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my interpretation of this situation is: Support the rainbow flag, or else be disapproved by those us who do support it. Are you really okay with that? You who've downvoted me have showed a new toxic trend. I don't challenge anyone else nor tell them to change there opinion. I don't offer any hate or toxicity myself. I only write this to hope that someone might read this and consider something: Supporting the rainbow flag does suddenly make you kind and openminded. Thinking for yourself, and accepting that not everyone feels the same way as you, and that that's okay, helps you become a better person.

to realize, is that I am happy. Truly. I see why it would be hard for others to understand maybe from their perspective, but I mean it. I'm filled with a quiet happiness that keeps me going, and fills me with love for myself and everyone around me because all kinds of the small choices I make every day that have been taught to me by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I realize you probably didn't to care to read any of that... But I'm a fighter, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. If you're gonna ask a question, I'm gonna answer it.

Believe me it's not something I've given little thought. I belong to a church that receives a lot of hate for it's teachings about same sex marriage. But it's not a punishment as some might think, it's just not in the laws of nature to put it simply. I've fallen in love before. I've been in love with another woman for going on 3 years now. But I choose to wait, and hopefully find a man I can feel the same way for, otherwise I'll go my life single. I believe in an afterlife, one where my God is good and kind, but fair and just. There'll be an opportunity for me to get married there if I don't get that in this life. We all face challenges everyday, and this is one of mine. Through my own personal prayer and studying, I've come to know this is the right way to live. That being said I'm not here to tell anyone else they can't marry who they want. Just wanted to share my thought, because people tell me every day how I should just get married and "give myself some happiness". What they fail

95% of people grow out of this instagram trend. You never see any old bisexuals, do you?
I should introduce you to my bisexual and gay neighbors who've been together for over ten years now and are in their 60s
Exactly. There are older bisexuals. A recent study in the UK says 1% of people over 60 years old identify as bisexual. And that 7% of people over 60 years old say they are not exclusively heterosexual/homosexual (so not 100% heterosexual/homosexual). The reason people might think there are no old bisexuals, is because older people are less open about it, as it is much more of a taboo in their generation, so you may not know that someone is bisexual when in fact they are. Especially if someone is in a heterosexual marriage, people will assume that person is straight, and if you never talk with them about topics like sexuality, how will you find out they are bi, if the subject never comes up?

AWWWWW I LOVE IT
I FELL SO MUTCH BETTER ABOUT MYSELFFF TvT
It’s adorable! I’m not bi tho ;-; I’m lesbian
I love this. I have come out to 2 close friends, no more because -school-

Cartoons ? Aimed at children ? Seriously ?
