I was staying in the Hilton hotel in Riyadh for several weeks for work, and my hotel room cleaner from Nepal left me a towel animal. I left him a note asking if he could leave it there the next time he cleaned my room, and he did. And over several weeks the collection kept growing until the day I checked out. Such a nice highlight to my extended stay and I left him a little hamper of snacks and a tip to say thank you (there was actually at least six more animals he made but they slowly lost their shape over time).

I only had two grandparents, as the other two diеd before I was born. The two I had didn’t speak English, and my grandfather hated children with a passion (at least until my little sister was born; out of his dozen or so grandchildren, for some reason, he was crazy about her.) It just dawned on me that I can’t tell you a single thing about my maternal grandparents; I was never told so much as a single anecdote. It now realize that my mom musta known what bad parents are like, and yet she was the least-affectionate person I’ve ever known. I gather I now have some idea why that is. (I don’t even have a photo of her parents.) I sure wish at least one of ‘em coulda been worth a post like this. My paternal grandmother was kind, but as I mentioned, since she didn’t know a word of English, we couldn’t communicate. As I suffered with migraines, she’d hug my head and my parents said that she said she was trying to transfer the migraine from me to her. She was likely a good soul.
