Arguing with the anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, and climate change deniers is a heck of a job. If you've ever tried, you’ll know what I am talking about.
And even though you recognize the fallacy in their arguments, like saying that masks don’t help to stop the coronavirus, you sometimes need heavy artillery.
Luckily, some people who know what they’re talking about have done everyone a service and stepped in to school the science deniers big time. From biochemists to sport scientists, these are some of the most mic-drop moves in stopping the spread of misinformation.
This post may include affiliate links.
These days, when there are so many science deniers, it may feel like arguing with them is absolutely pointless. But a 2019 study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior showed that it’s in fact worth arguing with them.
Philipp Schmid and Cornelia Betsch of the University of Erfurt in Germany conducted six experiments with 1,773 subjects. They assessed “how to mitigate the influence of a denier on the audience.”
The results showed that “not responding to science deniers has a negative effect on attitudes towards behaviors favored by science (for example, vaccination) and intentions to perform these behaviors.”
Alan Turing was praised for what he has done during war time and condemned for whom he loved. That's the great tragedy of his life.
Dear God-botherers. If god drowned everyone except one family on the planet because they were evil then he believed that unborn children could be evil (not to mention all the born children). You anti-abortion types must really hate god for that.
Facing deniers can be treated as a concerned and important effort to fight misinformation. The authors of the study suggest that “not turning up to the discussion at all seems to result in the worst effect.”
Meanwhile, showing up on an acquaintance's Facebook post, even if you think it's pointless, will surely do some good.
Interestingly, the authors claim that science deniers use the same rhetoric across domains. It means that “uncovering their rhetorical techniques is an effective and economic addition to the advocates’ toolbox.”
Never ending story of idiots spreading a disease because they do not believe in science.
I think we should celebrate holidays of all existing religions, that should be given equally to all followers and non followers. Yay! Every day is a holiday! ♡
Every atheist I know loves Christmas. We love the celebration of family and friends, gift-giving, the food, and even some of the music (depending on the atheist in question, and if the lyrics aren't too spooky). I personally love that our modern "Christmas" is a combination of pagan tradition... and I get to watch evangelicals melt down over red cups.
Load More Replies...You can be religious and believe in science, not necessarily mutually exclusive.
So the person on the top is picking a fight where none is needed. However science and religion sometimes go hand in hand. Big leaps forward were made by priests and monks, including areas like genetics, astronomy and even evolution. So the second comment doesn't work either.
Thank you!! Came here to say the same! Believing in God doesn't mean denying science.
Load More Replies...Being religious and being scientific are not mutually exclusive. As far as the original comment that says atheist shouldn't celebrate those holidays, it is dumb as hell.
Religious people are not automatically "anti-science." One is not mutually exclusive of the other. That's just ignorant for people to say. There are a lot of dumb people who are neither and will argue any point because it makes them feel smart. The other point I would like to say is why can't people just be nice? We don't have to all agree on everything. Who cares what your neighbor thinks? Be a nice human being. Sheesh.
i agree, every step in the creation story correlates with every step of the evolution story, give or take a few million years
Load More Replies...Maybe some one should check the number of religious scientists and doctors? You know, before acting like a moron. Why do so many people suffer from it religion or science illusion? It very very often both.
The discoveries and contributions of these religious scientists and doctors came from their intellect and education, not from being "religious". They accomplished results through hard work, not through prayer.
Load More Replies...I'm an atheist but we celebrate Christmas. I mean, I don't believe there's a god. Not that there is a No-God. I am free. I'm even allowed to pray, I just don't think it might help. Christmas and Easter are important for me and my family, because it's a celebration of the circle of the year. That said, I think we don't have nearly enough non Christian holidays in Germany( only 2).
Who says we "happily" accept it?? I'd prefer to just have flexible leave I can use any day, rather than be forced to take specific holidays off.
I can see the logic in specific holidays off. If you know over half of the company is going to recognize the holiday, you may as well just let everyone take off because there is a limit to how much work can be done with so little capacity.
Load More Replies...Atheists don't have to participate in religious holidays. But my hope is that as a Christian they will know God directly. There is a story about a man in a flood who prays to be saved. Someone comes by with a boat to save him but he declines saying he prayed and is waiting for God. This happens 2 more times. The man dies. He gets to heaven and asks God why he didn't save him. God says, "I sent you 3 people with boats". People do pray, the answer is often a man in a boat... or science.
"Yes, prayers and thoughts and mass church services are more than sufficient to fight a pandemic. Oh, and we do not care if you lost your job. That's no reason to stop giving generous donations to your preacher. Now hold your hands against the tv-screen and I will chase the Corona away." Signed Kenneth Copeland.
So how can you believe in Adam and Eve and still believe in science?
Load More Replies...I partly agree. But then I wonder why we have so few non-religious holidays. I would prefer a model where you have to take vacation days for (most) religious holdays. And instead we get to celebrate official secular holidays. Like the women's right to vote, declaration of the human right, the ends of the world wars, the birthdays of your biggest national heroes and so on.
I don't know about other countries but where I am most of the holidays were originally pagan anyway - many religions made use of what was already in existance.
Load More Replies...There is a vast difference between religion and faith. And Science can co-exist with both.
But anti-science people use the bible as "proof" to "debunk" science. Not to mention the role the Catholic church played in sabotaging the spreading of HIV.
Load More Replies...That doesn't even make sense. Many if not most medical treatments used today were invented by "religious people". Look up Louis Pasteur, Gregor Mendel, Francis Collins, Raymand Damadian, etc.
On the first post: Most places are closed on Christmas whether you are willing to work that day or not. On the second post: Being a Dr. or a Scientist is not exclusive from being religious.
yeah but, just because you have a belief in a deity, doesn't mean you don't believe in medicine. It is completely possible to believe in both. However being atheist means you directly do not believe in a deity. It is not faith vs science, as some people from both sides seem to try to make it.
I guess because the workplace is closed and they couldn't get in, so they went home.
here in the UK we dont get leave on religious days but we do get stinking drunk! LOL
Our days of the week are named in honor of Norse gods. Sunday: For Sol, goddess of the sun, Sun's day Monday: for Mani, goddess of the moon, Mani's day Tuesday: For Tyr, god of war, Tyr's day Wednesday: For Odin, the Raven God, sometimes known as Woden, Woden's day Thursday: For Thor, god of strength and storms, Thor's day Friday: For Freya, goddess of marriage. Saturday: Saturday did not come from the Vikings. It came from the ancient Romans - Saturn's day.
Actually that’s an idiotic comment By Noam. Being a believer in God/religion doesn’t mean you don’t believe in science.
Actually, most of those holidays 47toolate talks about were transients from Pagan holidays by the church.
I wonder if the original poster genuinely believes that all Christians spend their religious holidays off in prayer and meditation. As an atheist I'm not uncomfortable with the concept of gods. I enjoy mythology of many kinds. I am uncomfortable with people who use their individual notion of a fictional being in an argument.
Both atheists and religious people voted in governments and paid taxes to access medicare. Reilgious people still understand and use science, but focus life's existence on God. History gives us our calendar and festivities. Religion can choose which they want to participate in. Both statements above are based on false premise.
Half the months of a year are named after gods, do I get them off too?
This whole topic is a mess. Separation of Church and State. Freedom of/from religion. No religion should require anything of anyone who does not agree or follow their tenets. Hello everybody. Step away from my body.
No, I'm with both of these people. Stop making me celebrate your religious holidays, and stop using my technology.
get rid of religion and celebrate people and accomplishments, not religious ,( invisible) deities holidays
an athiest should be given leave the same as their peers. Denying equal treatment based on personal religious belief (or lack thereof) is not only illegal, it makes you an a**e.
What do Christians do on Thursday (Thor’s Day) or March ( Mars Month ) or August ( the month of the Divine Caesar Augustus) ? Bits of old religions are just scattered throughout the calendar they don’t bother anybody.
June was named after the goddess Juno, January after the god Janus
Load More Replies...Well, now, here's the thing about that last argument: You can believe in God and pray for him to make you well ... AND believe that He gave people brains to think with, and thereby the ability to become medical doctors and creators of medical devices and medications and other healing items that can help people get well! Wow! BTW, kinda sick of people using the WORST examples of "Christians" to make these points. Most of us are fine with everybody having "our" holidays off. It's just the complete jerks who are the loudest. Sorry for that.
Christmas is so far gone... Its barely anything to do with Christ now days. Lmao. Easter at that too.
My dad worked for the state of Texas as a highway worker and got all kinds of holidays off. He got Ramadan and Yom Kippur off. So, according to this person's logic, since we aren't Muslim or Jewish he should have went to work on those days. Some people just say things that make no sense. If your employer tells you don't have to be at work, then you don't have to be at work.
I'd actually prefer that religious holidays should not be National Holidays :)
Christmas is one day and people get weeks off of work and school. Eid is three days and Muslims aren't given a single day off for that. Even when they are fasting.
There was a big celebration around the time of Christmas for at least 3000 years in England. It is the winter solstice! This is an important time in the year for people relying on and close to the land. The end of one growing year and the start of another. There was also a celebration around Easter which is still timed by the phases of the moon. This is the start of the planting season. Ch Christianity has just highjacked them for their own purposes. Celebrate away my friends.
The saving factor is that none of the public holidays are celebrated in their original religious mode anymore anyway, unless by private people privately. Christmas has been possible to celebrate in full secular mode for decades, to the discomfort of some as far back as at least the Charlie Brown special in 1965. Santa, trees, gifts, jingle bells, all that. Church and Jesus got optional a long time ago. Even Easter. They are even more secular now, when some folks seem to think even Santa and Rudolf are too old-school. If all these holidays were REALLY religious and celebrated as such publicly, by a society in which the religion was actually a public thing and on the minds of the celebrants, then it would be weird. As an atheist, I might actually ask for an alternate free day off just to avoid commemorating it by accident.
That isn't quite an equivalent set, though, and although a witty retort it isn't a scientific argument like some others here. First, medicine is serious and denying it to people would be serious. Plenty of religious people have participated in the invention and current practice of modern medicine and find no contradiction. And even if they do, depending on their denomination and religion, they manage to take part anyway. Not to mention basic care that has been provided by religious institutions for centuries. Second, public holidays, though fun, are not serious. Denying any specific ones to people would be annoying, but a comparatively trifling imposition. Doesn't mean it would be right, but it's not that big a deal by comparison.
Makes me sad when people think god and science don't mix though... the leader of my church was a heart surgeon before he retired! An incredible man of science, and an incredible testimony of God
Anecdotal evidence does not prove anything. There is plenty of history about religions trying to stifle science and people even learning to read.
Load More Replies...Don't down vote me on this - but because you are religious does not mean you don't believe in medical care, but being an atheist means you do not believe in anything higher than yourself so it is not a one to one roast. Not so say I think they shouldn' t be given the holiday, but it is not equivocal .
That's not an accurate description of atheists. You make it sound like we're all arrogant in our superiority. Not the case at all, at least for me and those I know. There may well be a superior being that created the universe, but I simply don't believe it. It's not arrogance, it's an absence of blind faith and belief without evidence. And that's not even considering religious hypocrisy, which undermines the concept of belief.
Load More Replies...Probably because at one time all schools were operated by the church. No options there.
Load More Replies...Only religious extremists, and extremism is always bad in any field be it science or religion. Just to illustrate an extremist scientist unburdened by moral or religion might argue that performing some experiment on some group of people without their consent is perfectly justified because it could lead to some new amazing discovery. But that doesn't mean that is the right thing to do, and that is the lesson that religion is trying to teach humanity.
Load More Replies...I can't believe that the idiot had 1.8k up-votes. Yowsers, so many dafties.
Lol. How dare you debunk the nonsense I'm spewing on the internet with science? Don't you ever do that again!!!!
Even if you'd put the entire flat-earth movement in a spaceship and circle the earth in any way they want, they'd be telling you that it's a trick with mirrors and projectors. But at least they are harmless and don't hurt other people with their nonsense.
hahahaha I love it when people who have no flippin' idea who they are talking to make an a*s out of themselves. I always look up whoever I am in a discussion/argument/debate with before I make a comment that I might regret later. You never know if someone's background qualifies them to be right or not.
History is there to teach the future lessons. But of course, you do need some kind of education to be able to understand those lessons.
Do people forget that literally everything is made up of chemicals...?
Someone should probably tell them that Darwin believed in God and evolution simultaneously throughout most of his research years.
More and more European countries make vaccinating mandatory. Unvaccinated children are banned from schools in those countries and parents can be forced to have their children vaccinated. And rightly so. Screw your "strong convictions" and "religious beliefs", our national health is endangered because of your b******t and we are getting tired of your stupidity.
It's so sad to see one thinks that if their kids are momentarily healthy without vaccination, that's proof that this state will keep up indefinitely. It most likely won't. It would be funny to see their faces when they realize their mistakes, but it won't, because it would be to the expense of the child who'd deserve better.
Tell that to the families of women who died from cervical cancer. Including a 15 year old girl in the UK a few years ago. Plus it’s been proven that men can be affected by HPV as well so some are campaigning for teenage boys to have the vaccine too. Oh and it might not cause cancer, but more often genital warts and other infections. Who would want to be protected from getting genital warts right?! Morons...
Perhaps we need to write a law that hospitals have to check everyone's social media before treating them. "Sorry dude, you doubt our medical knowledge and you have solid evidence that our cures do not work, so we are not even going to try." or "Yes ma'am, Billy could be saved by a simple vaccination, but as you have repeatedly stated on Facebook: No one is going to poison your kid with vaccines. So take him home and enjoy your last 5 days with him." Wonder what the reactions would be?
I thought she was impressive just from what she's said. I didn't know her background. Wow! As a white boomer male, I would like Ted Cruz to stuff his mouth full of the money he gets from the NRA and shut up.
And it's not an easy death, it's painful and scary and preventable.
Seems that the US government has a particular talent of appointing the most stupid people in various positions.
Who cares if he qualifies as a "scientist"? He's a science educator, and a damn good one at that. I *am* a scientist and I greatly respect his work.
Sorry, but this not accurate. You also need to include the electricity that's needed to power the devices that people use to watch Netflix and the electricity that's needed to power the switches, modems and routers that are needed to get the signal from the server to the viewers. So yeah, the massive use of electricity does have an impact on emisions unless you decide to completely switch to renewable and sustainable energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, and hydro electricity and abandon coal and nuclear powerplants.
Sorry to say so but I noticed that Conservatives indeed seem to have some competition going on who can post the most stupid c**p on the internet.
hot air. clearly he's never bothered to look at a single peer reviewed journal, or any of the thousands of videos, articles, interviews, and other material from scientists saying what a problem climate change is and how long we've known about it.
