Common knowledge isn't that common. Sure, you can't know everything, and excelling in one area often means neglecting another, but things like first aid and the definition (and use) of free speech should be universally understood. At least, in the perfect world — it's in everyone's best interest.

But, again, they're not. So when Reddit user CasualBeers made a post on the platform, asking its users to share basic facts that they've noticed a surprisingly large number of people don't know, folks immediately started listing their suggestions. Here are some of the most popular ones.

35 People Who Noticed An Alarming Number Of Individuals Not Knowing Basic Facts Share What They Were How vaccines work. If they “make you sick,” it’s because they’re working! Your body is mounting a defense and creating antibodies to help fight off infection. A lot of really smart scientists have devoted their entire lives to keep us safe against life-threatening infection and people who have no medical training refuse them. It seems pretty idiotic and cavalier to me

There's a whole section of lifeguard training on how to approach a drowning person (you go under them) and how to escape them if they get a hold of you (you pull them under so they'll let go).

I'm not sure this applies to children. I would always jump into the water to save a child, especially my own. Meanwhile I can hope that there will be other people present to look around for some floating device. And hope the child is too small to drag me under.

A child most likely won’t have the same awareness, coordination, or strength as an adult might have to grab something in that moment. So what do you do? Try to scoop them with something? I’m grateful we’ve never been in this situation.

As a lifeguard for a decade, I can say that saving a person drowning in a body of water and saving someone drowning in a swimming pool are two very different endeavors.

Yup! Pulling someone out of a well-defined body of water or near a shore is much different than open sea. Jumping in the net to scoop them out is a whole different type of lifesaving.

Not true. I'm a rescue instructor. More often than not the person will not have the strength to fight you or maybe even use a floatation device. The standard advice is to approach from the back, if they attempt to grab you then you just swim under the water. A drowning person doesn't want to go down, you as the rescuer are not bothered about being underwater. Just keep going down till they let go. They are not controlling their breath and are exhausted, they will last 30 secs maximum. Grabbing someone when drowning is a completely normal and understandable reaction, it's upto you as a rescuer to control the situation. If you do not feel proficient then you should not attempt any type of rescue or you will make it worse. That should have been the moral here not just don't bother helping or you will die.

If absolutely necessary to save a life and you're already in the water, approach from behind, and "hug" them with one hand, resting their head on your upper arm, with the same arm incapacitate their flailing arm that is closer to your body so they don't hit you or fail your attempts to swim to safety

Better yet learn how to save a drowning person. The YMCA has classes, well the ones near me do but I'm sure there are other places offering. Unfortunately many don't know basic things anymore, we had someone die recently, struck by a vehicle while changing a tire. It could have been avoided. It's just a shame that all the noise has drowned out all the important things people should know.

I was taught to take off your top, throw one side within their grasp and when they grab it go behind them and tow them on their back. You're never touching them and they'll only let go if they lose consciousness (in which case adopt the chin hold and tow).

One of the cousins grabbed a hold of my uncle and my uncle was unable to remove him from dragging him down. The cousin, drowned also. They had to dredge the water to recover the bodies.

I have been on both sides of this: one who tried to rescue and got in trouble and one who tried to be rescued and ended up causing trouble for the inexperienced rescuer. Now with lifeguard training, I can say that this really isnt something to joke around with. It is scary, especially if the drownee is bigger than you. If I at all possibly can, I will still avoid getting in the water with a struggling person and throw them a flotational instead.

So many people don’t seem to understand grey area or nuance. I see it a lot with politics and opinions. I learned early on growing up with my siblings that sometimes you can both be kinda right or wrong and that just because someone did something hurtful doesn’t necessarily mean it was their intent to hurt, but so many people are so quick to vilify others for deeds or opinions (obviously this isn’t counting objectively wrong stuff like most crime or bigotry)

So, warm your tea pot with a small amount of water after the kettle boils, swirl the water in the pot, pour out that water, put the tea in the pot and add the rest of the water. Then enjoy!
