Irena Sendlerowa - Woman Who Smuggled Approximately 2,500 Jewish Children Out Of The Warsaw Ghett
Irena Sendler (née Krzyżanowska), also referred to as Irena Sendlerowa in Poland, nom de guerre "Jolanta" (15 February 1910 – 12 May 2008),[1] was a Polish nurse, humanitarian, and social worker who served in the Polish Underground in German-occupied Warsaw during World War II, and was head of the children's section of Żegota,[2][3] the Polish Council to Aid Jews (Polish: Rada Pomocy Żydom), which was active from 1942 to 1945. Assisted by some two dozen other Żegota members, Sendler smuggled approximately 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and then provided them with false identity documents and shelter outside the Ghetto, saving those children from the Holocaust.[4] With the exception of diplomats who issued visas to help Jews flee Nazi-occupied Europe, Sendler saved more Jews than any other individual during the Holocaust.[5]
So they made several movies about men who saved jews in WW2, and never done a movie about HER? Where's "Irena's list"?!!
There is movie "The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler" from 2009 with Anna Paquin as Irena Sendler.
Load More Replies...She should be higher on the list (with all respect towards other great women ofc)
Amazingly courageous woman, thank you Irene (Irene means peace in Greek)
Looking ahead, there are SO MANY women who should no be listed here. This is one of the ones who deserve credit for what she did but roller skaters? Skate boarders? Too many badly selected and so many left out.
I remember reading her story. . Amazingly brave woman who, daily, risked her life
Malala Yousafzai, 19, Pakistani Activist For Female Education Who Survived Being Shot In The Head By The Taliban, The Youngest Ever Nobel Prize Laureate
What makes her bad a*s, is that she stood up to the Taliban for women's educational rights. She was shot in the head by a member of the Taliban, SURVIVED, and continued to fight for women's right to education. She is unstoppable fierce and determined!
John, whats ironic is that in your bio you say you "fight for individual rights." You clearly don't.
Load More Replies...This is the kind of woman we need to see in the media. Not the F*cking kardashians. And listen the that kind of woman who know the danger of radicalism
Man she's beautiful! And getting shot in the head? She's unstoppable
A Woman Hitting A Neo-Nazi With Her Handbag In Växjö, Sweden (13 April, 1985)
''The woman in the photograph is Danuta Danielsson (1947–1988). (...) She was of Polish origin and her mother had been in a concentration camp during World War II" /wiki
The open mouthed face of the two men in the back is pretty good too LOL
Thank you I didn't even notice that until I read your comment!
Load More Replies...My MUM did the exact thing to a skinhead in England when he nearly knocked me over :) coward as they all are..He ran like hell :)
The woman was name Danuta Danielsson, and was a daughter of polish-jewish survivor from death camp.
the woman in the picture actually was a child of WWII-victims, her mother survived a concentration camp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Woman_Hitting_a_Neo-Nazi_With_Her_Handbag
He doesn't even know what's coming from behind, living fearlessly, walking independently 😲
Marie Curie Was A Polish Scientist Famous For Her Work On Radioactivity, The First Woman To Win A Nobel Prize And The Only Woman To Win Twice
What makes her badass is, she was the first EVER woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the ONLY woman (to date) to win TWO nobel prizes
Not only woman, but only HUMAN who ever got two Nobel prizes in two different categories :)
Load More Replies...Her daughter also won a nobel prize for discovering artificial radioactivity, both of them died of cancer due to their studies
Marie didn't die of cancer but of aplastic anemia. Of course it was due to radiation exposure as you said.
Load More Replies...Except her name is MARIA SKŁODOWSKA. She just happened to marry a Frenchie by the name of Curie. But she kept using her Polish surname. It's a bitter irony that she's remembered as Curie, as many not-overly-educted persons think she was French. By the way, same with Szopen (another Pole you know as Monsieur Chopin) and Kopernik (Copernicus), etc. etc.
She also keept doin the research even tho she knows it was bad for her health!
Nujood Ali, Given To Abusive Husband At Age 10, Divorced Him And Broke Tribal Tradition
Might I add that she now fights in Yemen's movement against forced child marriage
Amazing courage! She definitely should be higher on this list, what a badass! I hope she's inspired other girls to do the same
Definitely. I'm glad you think so!
Load More Replies...I know, right! Though I'm glad I didn't face the hardships these women faced, it makes me wonder what the f**k I'm doing with my life...
Load More Replies...I would like to know more about her. Didn't hear from her before, but she seems a super interesting character
yes more girls ought to stand up to this like Malala too, run away, pray for help and find people who will help you then help others as this girl has done, women and the men who respect them can change the world, for too long been the victims and allowed men to control them, say no more!
A 106-Year-Old Woman Who Protected Her Home With A Rifle, In Armenia (1990)
This is what a strong Armenian woman looks like, not Kim Kartashian. JS
Am I the only one who thinks it's sad that she actually had to do that?
Turkish women also protected their homeland, whatever nationality the woman is strong
I wish she had a life where guns never existed and instead, she would be sitting down in her home maybe even telling stories with her grand children. It's sad how even elderly people had to carry a weapon to protect their home :'(
These Women Were Firefighters At Pearl Harbor (1941)
This photo reminds me of the statue in DC "raising of the flag on Iwo Jima"
Black, indian, asian and probably white, someone should remind trump, what america is about!
I think its important to note that rhis was an ad, not a photo of pear harbor
... and 2 of those women were rewarded with interment in a camp/prison because they were of Japanese origin along with the other innocent Japanese-Americans.
Well done girls, now watch Trump stop you from going to the American mainland.
Margaret Heafield Was A Director Of Software Engineering For NASA's Apollo Space Program (1969)
What makes her badass is, she was Director of Software Engineering for NASA's Apollo Space Program in1969.
Yikes! What a woman! It's about time we heard of these women. I only recognise about half.
Strong resemblance to Amy Farrah Flwler. Did the Big Bang Theory makers do this on purpose?
Muslim Woman Covers The Yellow Star Of Her Jewish Neighbor With Her Veil (1941)
Wow... humanity is all that really matters at the end of the day... and some good dessert.
I hope we as a nation are remembered as people who spoke up for our Muslim neighbors, not a nation that shunned them.
Sarajevo in 1941 :) http://www.loonwatch.com/2013/11/muslim-woman-covers-the-yellow-star-of-her-jewish-neighbor-with-her-veil-on-the-streets-of-sarajevo-in-1941/

She was one of the Freedom Riders (a group of civil rights activisits who rode through the US fighting against segregation stating it as unconstitutional), this photo was taken after she was arrested for sitting on a "whites only" bus.
Amanda in with the hows and whys. Thanks for all these reasons why these women are badass. :)
Load More Replies...the day I was born! I love that she looked this fabulous while being an activist. (love the dress)
How dare those racist whites put her in jail! SCREW ALL WHITE PRIVILEGED RACIST WHITE MALES!
I thought so too! It's the stance and the pose she has. It's like "I dare you!"

Ladies sometimes you need to do some research before you speak. Cheers to speaking out and supporting strong women.
Jane Goodall, Leading Primatologist And Conservationalist
I have read about her. Another lady which I think is also great, is Jane's mother, and also her family. With her family support, she become "Jane" who is Primatologist and Conservationalist.
Jane Goodall changed our perception of ourselves as a species, her work is revolutionary, paradigm-changing, and celebrated enough
Story I love of her. The Far Side artist Gary Larson, drew a cartoon about her (sort of). He had 2 chimpanzees, and the female one picked a hair off the male and said something to the effect of "Fooling around with that Jane Goodall again!" He received a snitty letter saying that she was offended, etc. Later, he found out that that had been sent by someone in her office, but she found the strip hilarious. I've always admired her dedication, but that somehow made her even more admirable.
That would be a conversationalist instead of a conservationist 😉 (just kidding, Google Jane's TED Talk)
Load More Replies...Maud Stevens Wagner Was The First Known Female Tattoo Artist In The United States (1907)
Phyllis Kahn should be on this list. She authored the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act, and is the reason why you can work, eat, and fly in a smoke-free environment.
I wonder if she did some of her own work on her sleeves. She was, indeed, badass!!
People must've looked at her and been like "WITCHCRAFT! SHES POSSESSED!" Props go to you
Anne Frank Was A Jewish Diarist And Writer
She was bad a*s because she represents every girl who fought to survive under Nazi. And every girl who fought for life was bad a*s.
Anne Frank is an amazing girl. Living under those difficult times and conditions yet she stayed strong. Her story was terrible. I wish she lived in a world where she could chase her dreams.. ( Y . Y )
Anne Frank was first above a jewish girl in Amsterdam, who almost survived the NAZI occupation in a hideout, but sorryly only almost. She wa gased at the end. Her diaries are outstanding documents of history and humanity.
Died of typhus, not that it really matters which way she was killed.
Load More Replies...Rajani Sarasan, obviously you don't know that it was Anne Frank's own diary. Written by her. Not just a "book" or fictional novel. Don't you read the cover notes or were those pages missing from your copy? For Christ's sake I doubt you would have the same courage she did. Try some simple respect. Savvy?
Oh, she was not! She was a victim of the Holocaust who happened to write in her diary about the times. She had no idea what was going on, she wasn't part of the militia, she didn't start a riot or speak out. She was just one of many that lived during really horrible times. What she is an icon of and represents is a dark period of out time, but she herself was just a girl, and really shouldn't be on this list.
Amelia Earhart Was The First Female Aviator To Fly Solo Across The Atlantic Ocean (1928)
And her disappearance is one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of all time.
Remnants of her clothing and airplane were found several years ago.
Load More Replies...Yeah, they found clothing and fragment's of the plane on a small uninhabited atoll a while ago. They also found bone fragments in the holes of coconut crabs, so the theory is the crabs ate the body. Pretty crazy story.
She didn't fly solo across the Atlantic. She was the passenger in a plane flown by two men, Wilmer Stutz and Louis Gordon. She was technically the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air, but she could barely fly a plane at that point, let alone solo the Atlantic. Like most of the grandiose claims about her flying career, this was grossly overblown for publicity purposes.
Rosa Louise Mccauley Parks - Civil Rights Activist
Rosa Parks was a badass, no lie, but Claudette Colvin was first. http://www.biography.com/news/black-history-unsung-heroes-claudette-colvin
We recently learned about this in my USA history class, such a strong and brave woman
I am so in awe of her bravery. I don't know if I could be as brave, but I look to her as a role model.
I adore this woman for standing up for herself during a time like that!
Russia-Born Valentina Tereshkova Became The First Woman In Space Aboard The Vostok 6 (1963)
I remember a long time ago, I had to be her for a history project! What an inspiring woman
Yes! I think it's about time that women is recognized for her sacrifice instead of being covered up as well as the others who didn't survive the Russian space race. 🙁
Load More Replies...What is this "grammar"- "Russia-born"?! She is Russian! Say it like it is.
No it isn't, Yuri, but many people have made the same mistake. Look here https://www.google.com/search?q=valentina+tereshkova&client=ms-android-hms-tmobile-us&prmd=inv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj3tOW49MnSAhXrlFQKHQvwDLcQ_AUIBygB&biw=320&bih=489#imgrc=_
Load More Replies...Mary Winsor Holding Suffrage Prisoners Banner In Washington D.C. (1917)
still today i still can't understand why people didn't want woman to vote. it's inconceivable for my modern head
And it's not that long ago. But what does your head say when thinking about female bosses and/or staying home to raise your kids for a while, while your wife - who earns more than you do - goes to work? :-) It does happen, my brother and a friend of mine were stay-at-home-dads for one to three years.
Load More Replies...And some women agreed. It wasn't ladylike, and women just shouldn't make those kinds of decisions.
Eliza Leonida Zamfirescu, The First Woman Engineer In The World
You mean first woman to be recognized as an engineer by others, women be making this world turn for millennium
women have been engineers for as long as the have been women. she's just the first to get recognized.
Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu was born in Galați, Romania on November 10, 1887.She was the world's first female engineer. Marie Skłodowska Curie was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity.
Load More Replies...Annette Kellerman Promoted Women’s Right To Wear A Fitted One-Piece Bathing Suit (1907). She Was Arrested For Indecency
And now, in France, when women want to cover up, that's not allowed either. Women are always told what they can and can't wear, look at that.
Seriously, I'm a fervent anti-theist and I think that's a really, really stupid law. The way that Europe is becoming more right-winged in all the most illogical ways is awful.
Load More Replies...Indecency? If they could have seen what people wear now (men and women) then that would not be indecency.
I gotta say, I admire her for her for her bravery and attempt to move women's rights forward. But I also gotta say, if I had her figure, I'd be flouncing around in a skin tight suit too!
So tired of being told what we can and cannot do. Good for her! And good for us!
That s**t. Look at all the skin she is showing. Joking aside that is nothing compared to what people wear this days. We have come a long way.
Florence Nightingale - 1st Nurse To Teach Basic Sanitation Between Patients
She also invented the pie chart to show the figures. She thought it would help the ( resisting generals in the armies) understand why hygiene would save lives.
Great & humane woman. It was a dirty job, someone had to do it. And she did, brilliantly! Modern medicine & nursing owes her a lot.
A very strong, and interesting woman! Read about her it's interesting and worth your time!
She came to prominence while serving as a manager of nurses trained by her during the Crimean War, where she organised the tending to wounded soldiers. She was the founder of modern nursing.

Ftima El Fihria The Founder Of The First University In The World - Fes, Morocco
University of Bologna is traditionally recognized as an oldest university. University of Al Quaraouiyine is older, but is not the first recognized university in the sense of the word that we know.
Please... Imperial University of Constantinople 425 AD..And recognized as a university in 848, even if the Western European countries never recognized as a university! :D
Load More Replies...Artist permissions to use work or at least a shout out credit? Unless EL Haloui is the artist...
The oldest existing, and continually operating educational institution in the world is the University of Karueein, founded in 859 AD in Fez, Morocco. The University of Bologna, Italy, was founded in 1088 and is the oldest one in Europe. Oldest English speaking university is Oxford - Source is Guiness book of records. BUT oldest is Takshashila University, Taxila, Pakistan, 7th c. BC [it was most extensive too - filds in dance, music, astronomy, math, politics, warfare to archery were taught] there is evidence that ancient civilisations like mesopotamia etc. had institions too but no concrete evidence but they were advanced enough to have them but they were more specialized, this was the first university that had over 70 fields, but unfortunately no longer remains as far as i gather and so its not regarded as oldest anymore. others include = Shangyang, "higher school," China, established sometime during Yu period: 2257-2208 BC
Imperial Central School, established sometime in Zhou Dynasty: 1046-249 BC Nalanda University, Bihar, India, 5th c. BC Plato's Academy, Athens, 387 BC Najing University, China, 258 University of Salerno, Italy, 9th. c University of Magnaura, Constantinople, 848 -- these are all the known ones before Al Quaraouiyine. oldest regarded university in the complete sense is Takshashila University, Taxila, Pakistan, 7th c. BC as it offered more than just a few fields. most instituions focused on just math, physics chem, astronomy, medicine, surgery, by themselves individually but rarely more than 2-5 fields were present in any one university till Takshashila.
Load More Replies...Nalanda University in India, established in 427 C.E., was the first university in the world. The University of Karueein, Fez, Morocco, is the oldest continuously operating institution.
Ironic....that millions of women in Islamic countries are denied an education in 2027!
Nadia Comaneci - The First Women To Score A Perfect 10 In Gymnastics At The Olympic Games
she is the first gymnast to score a perfect 10. not just the first women.
Now that I see her figure, I wonder: whatever happened ever since that female gimnasts became so muscular, so full-bodied? See, Comaneci was slender by any standards, yet her precise movements gave her a perfect 10.
Load More Replies...I did see it on TV when I was a kid. The stadium was dead silent...then exploded with applause. It was incredible.

Born in France makes you a French citizen....oui?
Load More Replies...Where you are born makes you a citizen. However, it does not necessarily make you French, or whatever. Your parent's ethnicity plays a part in this too. Also you may be eligible for dual nationality. Comprende?
That's a gorgeous photo. It gives me a "Liberty Leading the People" kind of feeling, but in a moment of peace.
Harriet Tubman, Who Helped Slaves Escape Via The Underground Railroad.
I heard that she was abused and hit with a metal pipe on her head as a slave.
Yusra Mardini Syrian Teenage Refugee Who Swam For Hours In The Sea Pushing A Sinking Boat With Other Refugees To Safety
Ana Aslan (Romania) - She Is Considered To Be A Pioneer Of Gerontology And Geriatrics
I hadn't heard of this lady either. However, what a pioneer in a rather difficult field of medicine/caregiving. On a different note, I truly wonder how some people manage to get out of bed every day. No pun intended. Btw, dictionaries, or even Wikipedia can be tools for gaining rudimentary knowledge.
Taramon Bibi Is One Of The Two Female Freedom Fighters In Bangladesh
There were so many more female freedom fighters fought for liberation in 1971 but only 2 got some acknowledgements..:(
There were thousands of female fighters in Bangladesh's war of independence. She and captain sitara were the only two awarded for their valor.
Strong & dedicated women! They should all be acknowledged for their valor.
Not one of the two female freedom fighters. There were countless women who fought for the country. But sadly, she's only one fo the two women who were recognized for their courage and given a bravery award
Here we go- fights for rights of women WHILE LIVING in that country! Not like fake Malala in London!
Mileva Maric, Serbian Physicist, Einsteins Wife. Worthy "His" Nobel Prize
Most likely Einstein financed her research too and because their time of the world culture they had to agree that he should be taking all the credits(so general people will actually think about taking all the theoretical ideas seriously)!
So true! Was raised in Novi Sad, Serbia, 5 houses from her family home where the two of them lived for a while. The house is still standing, but in bad need of repair.
How the heck do you edit something? I can do it in Facebook, but apparently am an idiot with this. I mean to say "view point", not prospectus. Mea culpa.
Well, I guess that everyone has given a different prospectus on the lady. She obviously had some intelligence. Einstein probably plagiarized her work. Just kidding. Still, she lived with him, & it's well known that geniuses are difficult to live with. So she deserves some credit just for that! Lol.
It's important to draw a distinction between women who were heroes and role models for the feminist cause, and those were merely affiliated with historic figures. "The question whether (and if so, to what extent) Marić contributed to Einstein's early work, and to the Annus Mirabilis Papers in particular, has been the subject of some debate. A consensus among professional historians of physics is that she made no significant scientific contribution." Pais, A. (1994), pp. 1-29 Holton, G. (1996), pp. 177-93 Stachel, J. (2002), pp. 26-39, 55 Martinez, A. (2005) Calaprice, A. & T. Lipscombe (2005), pp. 41-42
Ellen O'neal, One Of The Greatests Female Freestyle Skateboarders In The World (1970)
i don't understand why you got down votes for calling her pretty.... it's not an insult, and you weren't comparing her to anybody..... just complimenting. it's not degrading or an insult to call someone pretty folks. Unclench already.

Mostly because it's a fight. And all fights have sides, and only one side can win. It's not for one side to be equal. It's for the whole system to be fair, equal.
Load More Replies...I really feel for you. I live in Romania and altough it is not the best country to live in the world, it is one of the few countries where equality in rights is respected, and we actually get equal pay .I can't imagine how I would feel if my capacity would be rewarded less than I deserve .it's just not right!! Yo go girls !! Fight for what you deserve !!!
Angela Davis (1944), American Political Activist, Scholar, Author & Feminist
Warning ! 1944 is the year of birth of Angela Davis. This photo depicts her during the 60s to 70s early in the period in which she was campaigning for the civil rights of African Americans.
"Activist" would be one word for someone buying and personally supplying the guns for killers to use to kill innocent people. It would also seem to be another word for a communist, black panther supporter and racist.
So if she was part of a Democratic party all of you criticizers would be praising her?! Stop throwing shade at Communism! It does not promote racism or discrimination, but equal distribution of wealth. But you rather have rich brainless whores like Kim K on one side and homeless people on the other? "American Dream"!
Didn't Mrs. Davis purchase and supply the guns used by the Soledad Brothers to take a Judge hostage?
John Jackson (Marin County incident) was a friend of mine. We all thought he never would have gotten killed if Davis hadn't prodded him.
She doesn't deserve to be on this list she led the Communist Party USA.
I wonder what Harriet Tubman would think of her? Probably disappointed.

Definitely! Just like "ok, first have a cuppa and a cig, and then we'll tidy up a bit".

She is just one of the biggest figures of french feminism, writer and philosopher. She wrote in 1949 "Le deuxième sexe" (the second sex), censured by The Vatican in which she expose woman sexuality, work inequalities, contraception, abortion and freedom of woman. She fought for women rights and since 2008 a Simone de Beauvoir price have been created in France for woman freedom.
This is my original submission : Simone de Beauvoir (French writer, intellectual, existentialist philosopher, political activist, feminist and social theorist) wrote for a French magazine in 1971 « The Manifesto of the 343 » Here is the translation of the intro : « One million women in France have an abortion every year. Condemned to secrecy, they have them in dangerous conditions when this procedure, performed under medical supervision, is one of the simplest. These women are veiled in silence. I declare that I am one of them. I have had an abortion. Just as we demand free access to birth control, we demand the freedom to have an abortion. » By writing this text, these women exposing themselves to criminal prosecution (in France, you could be put in jail for having or helping for an abortion). Contraceptives became free in 1974 and abortion became legal in 1975. Thanks to her.

I'm a South African and this is SUCH a joke. If you were going to post about a South African woman, you sure as heck chose the wrong person. Please do yourself a favor and do some research on Winnie and then you'll see why she does not belong on this list.
In 1991, Winnie Mandela was convicted of kidnapping and being an accessory to assault,[4] but her six-year jail sentence was reduced to a fine and a two-year suspended sentence on appeal. In 1992 she was accused of ordering the murder of Dr. Abu-Baker Asvat, a family friend who had examined Seipei at Mandela's house, after Seipei had been abducted but before he had been killed.[5] Mandela's role was later probed as part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings, in 1997.[6] She was said to have paid the equivalent of $8,000 and supplied the firearm used in the killing, which took place on 27 January 1989.[7] The hearings were later adjourned amid claims that witnesses were being intimidated on Winnie Mandela's orders
Just wanna say that despite of the fact that some Muslim countries are now infamous with how they treat women, back then during the times of prophet Muhammad both women and men did receive educational teaching..for an example, the wife of prophet Muhammad,Aisha is one of the most influential muslims when it comes to teaching the people about Islam..and during the abassid caliphate, both women and men were taught in the same school regardless of the gender...it was until now suddenly some Muslim countries decided that muslim women should be treated differently compared to men.. im not sure about the reason honestly but anybody who actually learns about Islamic history would understand how islam is a religion which knowledge and wisdom are important for both men and women ..not only the islamic teaching itself but this includes medical, literature and other teachings..sorry for my bad English.
Prophet Muhammad also married Khadijah (RA), an older divorced woman. At that time, it was taboo for divorced women to re-marry (or get a divorce). She was about 20 years older than the Prophet, too.

It was a pretty significant taboo to eschew, at a time when everything about a woman's body and appearance was dictated by patriarchal society even more so than today. Tattooed women at the turn of the century and before were considered pariahs or confined to circus freak shows. It's not the tattooing itself. It's the implications of defiance by this woman and others.

Nellie Bly was an amazing badass woman! In the early 1880s she responded to a sexist article in a newspaper and her response was so fantastic that she was offered a journalist job. She became and investigative reporter and often went undercover to expose terrible working conditions and the mistreatment of people. She began applied for a job at the World Newspaper in New York and was turned away. She said she would get them an incredible story for the job and she did. She got herself admitted to a mental hospital for Ten Days and then wrote an article about the conditions. That article changed how the mentally ill were treated in New York. When the book "Around the World in Eighty Days" came out and was a smash hit she said she could do it faster. She went on a crazy round the world trip and did it in 72 days. She was an incredible woman and I encourage you to find out more about her: http://www.biography.com/people/nellie-bly-9216680#bellevue-hospital-expos%C3%A9
