Overworked shelters take in millions of lost, stray, and abused animals every year. Luckily, people continue to open their doors and hearts to these misfits.
By adopting a pet rather than buying one, we not only give it a second chance at life but also free up valuable space and other resources that allow humane organizations to take in and help more critters.
Like every month, we at Bored Panda put together a list of heartwarming adoption photos to thank those who recently invited these neglected animals into their families, so continue scrolling and check out the images—it's impossible not to smile looking at them.
If you've fallen behind on the series, fire up our earlier collections and catch up: February, January, December.

The First Picture After Adopting A Dog
There really are no words. One picture really is worth a thousand words.
So, I'm sobbing. My rescued Pitbull died in November. She did this to my son 10 years ago when we brought her home.
Went To Adopt A Kitten. Came Home With An Elderly Chihuahua With Kidney Problems, Asthma, Arthritis, And Bad Gas (And A Kitten)
Thank you for adopting a senior! Chihuahuas are the second most slaughtered breed in shelters and are such a misunderstood breed. They are loyal, silly, adventurous, and curious pups. They bark a lot because they actually have the best hearing of all dog breeds. Biting is often because when growling and barking doesn’t work to protect their personal space, they escalate. Plus they are so easily injured because of their size. Too many ppl hate on them bc some idiots think it’s cool to carry them around in purses. They are dogs, and were bred to kill rats/mice and need intellectual stimulation and exercise like all breeds. I have a rescue chihuahua and have fostered many chihuahuas. I’ll never live without one now. ♥️🐕♥️
That photo with the kids needs to be enlarged and framed and hung up!🥰
Maggie looks just like a lil kid about to ask mom to buy her a snack 35 min before dinner
When you rescue an animal, they need to adjust to their new surroundings just as much as you need to adapt to them. So if you just welcomed a dog or cat into your home, you're in luck! The experts at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) gave Bored Panda a few valuable tips that can help tremendously during this transitionary period. Let's begin with dogs.
"Owners should think about what their neighborhood and household are like ... and find ways to get their pup familiar with that type of life, getting creative with socializing them to the world in and outside the home," the ASPCA team explained.
A Rescue From Ukraine. Her Name Is Bella
squeeeeeeee!! Bella is très belle! That earnest little expression and her widdle face!

Oh geez! Another black cat named Noodle! Named mine because he went limp even picked up.
I Volunteer At The Humane Society And Fell In Love With This Girl
I cried when I found out she had been adopted…two weeks later and she was returned for being “too lazy”. Took her straight home to her new couch where she is the cutest potato. Don’t know her name yet but just look at that face
She does appear to be a cattle dog breed someone may have got her trying to get her to be a farm dog or something
Load More Replies...How can you RETURN a dog? Except in a very serious case of aggressive behaviour? WHO DOES THAT
There was a case in the UK of a couple who returned a dog because it didn't match the furnishings! Some people should never be allowed to have a pet.
Load More Replies...My 10 year old daughter: Call her pepper. No sunny D (for sunny dog) . NO FLOWER!!!!!
Don't kids come up with the funniest and sometimes coolest names?
Load More Replies...She doesn't look like a sunflower, although hers is cute. She looks like a Daisy to me.
That was exactly my thought, she looks like a daisy.
Load More Replies...I don't like dogs, and even I would adopt her and love her. What a gorgeous little thing.
I'd love to have a lazy little dog to sit with me in the evenings.
When socializing your puppy, you should always:
- Introduce your pup to new experiences, objects, places, and people in a fun, positive way that allows your pup to feel safe. This is the best combination for building confidence;
- Use treats and toys that your pup finds rewarding to help create positive associations;
- Let your puppy decide when they want to engage and disengage. Never force them to investigate something that they’re uncertain about;
- Be watchful of your puppy's body language to ensure they are enjoying themselves and recognize when they are not.
So My Mom Adopted Some Feral Cats
no i think just 2 because the feet on the floor belong to the one draped over the arm of the chair. like theres gotta be a hole in the chair
Load More Replies...Awww, probably the most restful sleep they've had in ages, all safe and warm now *sniff!*
Is that 1 very long cat, draped over the armrest and litting its feet out from under the chair?
Check Out The Cutie I'm Adopting! I'm So In Love
AWWWWwwwwwwwwwwhawwwwwwhaw what a widdle wee cutie. i just want to cup it in my hands
Ok dammit I'm only a couple of images in and I'm already on life support. My heart...oh my heart
That cannot be real. It's a fur puff with eyes. I do not accept that something that cute exists and I can't cuddle it!
But not today, right? That cutie patootie is only about 4 weeks old and needs at least another 8 or so weeks with her mom and siblings (yes it's a her, you can tell from the color, tricolored cats are always girls. A few exceptions exist, but they are about as rare as seeing a pink elephant)
The person clarifies in their comments that they're just visiting for now, but as soon as the little critter is available, they're adopting it.

Some ideas for socializing your puppy include:
- Lots of walks! Take your puppy for walks while maintaining a safe social distance. Mix up your routes, go out in all types of weather, and walk on different surfaces so your puppy continually experiences new things. At least six feet away, walk past other people and dogs, construction sites, trains, buses, cars, bikes, scooters, and strollers. Offer treats and playtime as you encounter new things and friends so your puppy learns to enjoy all of them;
- Puppy Soundtracks: In the home, help your pup hear all the noises of a normal world like traffic, crowds, and other animals by playing free soundbites online. Turn them on right before your puppy enjoys mealtime, treats, or a fun play session. Start with the volume at a low level, increasing it just a little every day. You can also dance, sing, cheer and clap in your home so they get used to these experiences too. And, make sure to also get your pup used to the sounds of electrical appliances, washers, vacuum cleaners, and hair dryers typically used in your home.

My husband and I have adopted several seniors and dogs with health issues. They have so much love to give.
Aww, she looks just like my friend’s old Pomeranian, Snickers!
- Stair and Elevator Training: Teach your puppy about climbing and descending stairs. If one is accessible to you, take your pup in the elevator and play a game of tug as you ride up and down.
- Obstacle Courses: Create a fun obstacle course at home that gets your pup to walk on different surfaces, including uneven ground. Try to create surfaces of different temperatures and textures by using household materials such as aluminum foil, cardboard, paper/plastic bags, and more.
Dog Abandoned For Being "Gay" Gets Adopted By A Gay Couple
Especially since if they bothered to read their Bibles, they'd know *humans* are the only creatures with the knowledge of good and evil and therefore able to sin. (If being gay were a sin, which it's not, even according to that very silly book!)
Load More Replies...It's called "dominance " Garry! Dominance! REAL ALPHA males do that to other males, to assert dominance, garry! it's NOT GAY! it's being a REAL ALPHA, GARRY!
I.. don’t think this is the gay couple though. I read it was two men that adopted him. ???
Correct. It was a pair of men with epic gray beards!
Load More Replies...The previous owners saw him hump other male dogs and assumed that he was gay. Humping other dogs is not always for sexual reasons though.
Load More Replies...Wasn't there just a news story about this? Last I had heard, there were tons of applications to adopt him. His 1st "family" surrendered him b/c he humped another male dog. *eye roll*

Staying active is key as boredom and excess energy are two common reasons for undesirable behavior in pets, the experts at ASPCA explained.
While many families are still busy working and learning from home, it's important for dogs and cats to do the same!
In addition to physical exercise, there are many fun and free ways to give your new pet a mental workout from the comfort of your house.

For dogs:
- Use a snuffle mat for offering treats/dry food or stuff a puzzle toy with yummy goodies like plain yogurt, peanut butter, or their meal for a fun, and delicious challenge that will keep your dog busy and mentally stimulated. Once your dog becomes a pro at using a puzzle toy, you can even try freezing the stuffed toy in advance so getting all the food out takes even more of your dog’s time. If you don't have a puzzle toy, use cardboard boxes (of all sizes), paper towel rolls, PVC pipes with holes drilled into the sides, or just plain old plastic jugs.

From Stray To Adopted And Then Returned, Penelope Has Finally Found Her Forever Home And We Love Her To Pieces
My opinion: I think we shouldn't judge people who return adopted dogs, without understanding the reason. Returning the dogs, instead of abusing or neglecting them, for whatever reason, is a good act. Note, not every animal that gets adopted goes to a good home.
This. We adopted an adorable pup who, after two years, we gave to a dear friend whose adopted greyhound needed a buddy. We loved her, but we have two senior dogs who never adjusted to her presence and became so depressed they seldom left our room. It was such a brutal decision, but the puppy is adored by her new greyhound sister, and our two senior fur babies are once again comfortable and enjoying their retirement. Sometimes it’s for the best and it can be selfish to keep an animals when you know all involved will be happier elsewhere. I LOVE getting reports on her. All she wanted to do was play with our seniors, and it was heartbreaking to see her get constantly rejected and them become depressed. Don’t regret the decision, though it was a really hard one to make.

Pupper finally feels safe, secure, loved, and at home. You did a good thing adopting them.
I see a touch of grey happening on both muzzles in the pic, they're made for each other ;-)
- Set up a scavenger hunt so your pup can put their powerful nose to work. Hide treats around a room in partial view, or even in cardboard boxes, empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls, cereal boxes, or egg cartons, to be discovered. If you have a yard, simply toss your dog’s kibble in the grass for him to search for his meal.
- Engage your dog in short, empowering, training exercises such as targeting your hand or a particular object or learning “sit”, “down” and “come. If your pup already knows the basics, look for trick training books or videos to learn more advanced skills like “spin” or “roll over.” If you want help with training, many professional dog trainers are offering virtual coaching.
Just Adopted This Little Cutie, Meet Sally The 8 Week Old Sausage Dog Pup
Adopted or bought? I often wonder when people say they adopted a puppy when it's a very popular breed. I've worked in so many shelters and I'm aware that many animals go through them pregnant and have their pups there and then the pups are fostered for adoption. But I still can't help but wonder.

My TNR Ragnar. "He's To Feral For Adoption"
Sometimes it’s not the cat, it’s the place, the people, the whole situation, any combination of the three, and more. Always remember, animals will pick up on the vibe you’re giving off. So, if you’re jumpy, they’re jumpy. More importantly, if you’re calm and happy, they’re calm and happy. Once a “feral” cat adjusts to home life and your general vibe, they’ll start doing things like trying to cheer you up if you’re sad and keeping you company when you’re sick.
Better watch out, she sure looks mean...she's gonna cuddle you to death.
awww Maybe he could be farm cat or some business have cats to keep pests and mice away.
TNR? Totally normal rambler? Oh, trap neuter return. Well somebody forgot the return part. But that cat was in contact with humans at a young age to become so trusting.
Previous human contact doesn't necessarily have to happen to ultimately win over a feral cat. I have been involved in feral cat caretaking/rescue for over 20 years and with patience even the most feral or oldest feral cats may become more trusting, social, and adoptable. Out of hundreds of cats, I would say less than five were what I would consider truly feral.
Load More Replies...if that's feral then how sweet must a domesticated cat be?
For cats:
- Offer their meals or treats out of food puzzle toys.
- Provide objects for them to explore, such as cardboard boxes, paper shopping bags (with the handles cut off), bottle caps, packing paper, and toys that encourage them to investigate various openings with their paws.

- Train your cat to learn useful behaviors and fun tricks, like “sit”, “come”, hand target, “shake” and fetch.
- Position bird and squirrel feeders outside windows where your cat can observe animals coming and going during the day or even try playing videos of birds and squirrels on your tv, computer, or phone!
Adopted This Sweetie Today
I have a cat with a face like that. She can be a little toughie, and can definitely handle herself in any situation, but she also loves hugs and gentle little kisses on her head, and will snuggle up to you every chance she gets. Smudgy was spayed before we adopted her at 4-6 months old, but has become the adopted mom of every cat we’ve adopted since she came to live with us.
He looks like as soon as you get home he's going to be laying down his new rules in his house. LOL. Very pretty kitty.
Come on, hurry up, I want all of the treats now!

Load More Replies...It's important to consider what your pet can do while they're spending time alone. As regular work and school routines are returning, your pet may be left confused (and lonely!) once everyone is rushing out the door instead of spending time inside.
Even while you and your family are home, prepare your pet by allowing them to spend comfortable time alone throughout the day.
Adopted Leo 3 Days Ago. He Finally Came Out From Hiding Under The Couch
He probably confused the dust bunnies for fellow fluffy kitties. :)
He’s finally decided you’re one of the good people, so he can relax and settle in.
Adopted mine when my Mom died (was her cat). My dog was OK with her but she didn't care much for him. She spent about a week living on top of the refrigerator in the basement and another 2 months IN the basement before she came upstairs to live with the family. It's OK, basement is partially finished and she had her food, water and litter box down there. That was almost six years ago. She's about 15 now and such a floofy, wonderful, lovable mess!
He looks so much like my Tigger. I call him biggy Tiggy. 18 pounds of fluffy lovin.

She has a thunderbird on her chest. How about Thunderbird, or Birdie for short.
Create a cozy, inviting place for your dog or cat to nap away from all the activity. You can also put on some soothing music or radio.
You can also offer your dog tasty chews to keep them busy—you can purchase all sorts of interesting and easily digestible chews online, such as bully sticks, tendons, tracheas, scapulas, and cheek rolls.
There are many free game apps for cats to play with on their own but you can also find plenty of battery-operated toys to keep them busy.
Again, remember that both dogs and cats will be entertained for some time with an interactive food-puzzle toy!

You can come and sit on my keyboard any time sweetheart. Goodness knows I've had enough conversations with my best friend's cat when she decides the best route from A to B is across the keyboard. Also once with her westie but he wasn't stopping to chat. He'd just fallen off the back of the couch onto the cat and was getting out of range before she figured out WTF just hit her!

We're on a foster-adopt plan depending on how it goes with my 2 kitties. He's precious and sooo tender...hasn't barked once all afternoon. Not sure what he is either. Advise for 1st time owner appreciated!
Ask the vet for good books on dog training. Two mistakes we made with our first dog were 1) not crate - training her (crate trained dogs seem more secure because they have their own cozy little place to go, plus they become more portable). You have to do it slowly, and make it a good experience so they want to go in. It's for their own happiness and sense of security). . Also we didn't understand that she didn't understand after the fact if she'd done something wrong... Like if she peed in the living room and we didn't catch her in the act she had no clue why we seemed displeased when we later found out. (Don't worry... She was loved to pieces and had a long and happy life... But those were two things we did differently with our second dog and they were helpful. Also ask the vet what breed or breed she might be. They have different temperants and some breeds actually like having a 'job '.
Many dogs won't bark when in a new house. Once they feel secure, then they will vocalize.

She needs a bath. Listen closely to her breathing too. Gunky noses can mean an upper respiratory infection. Ask your friends about a good vet. Plus many white cats with blue eyes are deaf. This one maybe grey, can't tell but if not pay attention to how she reacts or doesn't react to sounds.

A Timeless Tale: Student Lives Alone And Adopts A Cat, Instantly Become Best Friends
I live in a college town. Many times the end of the story is, student graduates, "can't take cat" and just leaves it. We've had 3 cats arrive on our doorstep since we moved here that we took in. 2 had been neutered and were housebroken. One was a feral kitten of a cat that we trapped and had spayed. The kitten was one of 4 and she had congestion that needed daily care. The other three and mom went to our local rescue. We have one right here in our small town. Since after graduation our stray population escalates each year.
It has been a week and a half since my baby girl, Evie, passed away. Evie was a Boxer and we adopted her 9 years ago from a shelter when she was around a year or two old. She was found wandering the streets of a large city and the shelter took her in. She was the most loving dog I have ever owned. She had a great personality too. She would howl/talk with me and my son. She would argue with us too, we had a hard time telling her no. She loved to play and loved walks. She also loved to cuddle and thought she was a lap dog. If I was having a bad day, she would literally come up and lean her head on my shoulder and if I gave her hugs, she would hug right back. I miss her so very much! I have her ashes in a cedar box with her picture on it. I talk to her all the time still. I plan to adopt another dog from a shelter/pound down the road. While no one could replace Evie, I still have love to give to another dog or two. May she rest in peace <3 (This is her, she hated to get her pic taken) Sweet-Baby...68bc8f.jpg

Animals, like humans, are unique and have developing personalities that take more than a few minutes to unfold. Give them time, a day or two at least, and they'll show you their name.
It's fun though. We just kept the names the rescue gave them. Obviously nicknames came later

I bought my dog, a St Bernard, from a reputable breeder. Nothing wrong with buying a dog unless it’s from a puppy mill or it’s a Pit bull. Stop acting like a hero if you got your dog without knowing it’s past. Refer to your dog as “my dog” not “my rescue” like you jumped on top of it while a bomb was falling.
But what the hell is wrong with a Pitbull? Read on the history of the breed and don't be ignorant. Saints aren't all perfect. I knew one, raised well from a pup, who went mean and had to be put down.

God bless you. I know they'll bring you joy beyond your wildest dreams. So beautiful
