Adopting a pet is a big responsibility. But if you have the right conditions and do the homework, the rewards of saving an animal in need outweigh most concerns and fears surrounding it.
Every month, we at Bored Panda go through the subreddit r/BeforeNAfterAdoption and hand-pick adorable photos that show animals enjoying their second chance at life. Whether it will inspire you to get a pet, donate to a shelter, or simply make your day, it's a win-win. May 2021 was no exception.
Continue scrolling to check out what the subreddit has blessed us with this time, and when you're done, fire up our earlier posts for more heartwarming pics: April, March, February.

My Foster Dog Had Never Been Indoors Before. This Is Her First Nap, On A Bed, In A Home
This hurts me, for all she must have been through. Thank you a million times over.
Sadly never being inside is not necessarily the bad part. My last dog would have literal panic attacks if we made her come inside, shivering, gasping for air, you could actually see her pulse in her neck, she would glue herself to the door til we let her back out. She had free run of the neighborhood, everyone there knew and loved her (long, sad story), as well as a roomy doghouse with a warming light for winter months, piled high with cedar chips, as well as doggy friends from the neighbors
Load More Replies...I hate to say it, but I've seen this photo multiple times on this site and it's definitely older than a month.
Last year I woke up to find an unknown dog running up and down our veranda. I opened the door and he shot in , straight up onto our bed. After watching me to see if I was going to rouse, he curled up and slept for four hours solid. Turns out he belonged to a property down the road and had gotten spooked by a storm the night before.
It's going to be even better when she finally feels safe enough to expose her lil' belly while sleeping =*). Kudos to her foster parent(s).
Well done, make sure she's stays comfortable, happy, loved and well treated for the rest of her life.
At the beginning of the pandemic, reports emerged that people began adopting animals in huge numbers. Cages were getting empty. But skeptics remained cautious whether the boom will produce any long-term results. They feared that once the isolation ends and governments ease restrictions, allowing their citizens to return to their normal lives, there will be a spike in pet returns. New findings, however, suggest otherwise.
Recently, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) released new data from a nationally representative poll of 5,020 respondents. According to the numbers, close to one in five households acquired a cat or dog since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, which would account for approximately 23 million American households based on the 2019 U.S. Census.
"The vast majority of these households still have that pet in the home—90 percent for dogs and 85 percent for cats—and are not considering rehoming their pet in the near future," ASPCA told Bored Panda in a statement. "Despite alarmist headlines tied to regional reports of a surge in owner surrenders, this trend is not currently evident on a national level with many organizations simply seeing a return to pre-pandemic operations and intake."
My Foster Kitten Is Part Domestic Shorthair, Part Vampire
Seems like such a dramatic little sleep position ... OMG, I love it!
According to the OPs reddit, it is a non-working early 20th Century electric fireplace hearth.

Anytime Someone Asks To Adopt The Pups Separately I Send Them This Picture
They're gorgeous - having two dogs is wonderful. I would have more dogs in a heartbeat if I thought I could cope. (Damn you health problems!) Hope these cuties get the best home possible.
"This incredibly stressful period motivated many people to foster and adopt animals, as well as further cherish the pets already in their lives, and our recent research shows no significant risk of animals being rehomed by their owners now or in the near future as a result of the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions," said Matt Bershadker, ASPCA President and CEO. “Pets are still providing their families with joy and comfort, regardless of changes in circumstances, and loving owners continue to recognize and appreciate the essential role pets play in their lives."
As COVID-19 restrictions continue to be lifted across the country, the majority of surveyed pet owners are incorporating their new four-legged family members into their lifestyles with little reported concern about having enough time to spend with their pet or wanting to travel more but feeling limited by an animal.
A Fantastic Blep From My Newly Adopted Blind Old Kitty, Ambrose
I think thats because people know they won't have as much time with them and are afraid of whats going to happen when they get attached, but the pet leaves too fast.

Someone Is Happy To Be Adopted Today
That looks like my cat. When she was a kitten, but looks just like her! <3
"Although some pet owners expressed general concerns, 87 percent of respondents shared that they are not considering rehoming their animal, suggesting that pet owners remain committed to caring for their cats and dogs," ASPCA explained.
But it is important to remember that even without a national surge in returns occurring at this time, there are a variety of reasons that might make it difficult for individuals to keep a pet due to new factors outside of their control.
"The ASPCA encourages any pet owner who may be considering rehoming their pet to enlist the support of a friend or neighbor—or to reach out to a shelter or rescue organization in their area, as the staff can often provide advice and assistance," the organization said.
Some issues are tougher than others. So for pet owners who are concerned about their new dog experiencing separation anxiety when routines change, there are many resources to help ease the transition, and working with a certified applied animal behaviorist, veterinary behaviorist or certified professional dog trainer can help.

The best! :-) Needs to be number one. Please adopt the seniors! They need extra love, but are extra loving in return!
Thank you for choosing this handsome senior as your first cat. May you have many more years together and may his kidneys, arthritis and teeth stay mangeable for you both to be happy.

are you sure this guy isn't a girl? Because that looks like a dilute calico but I'd have to see a bit more to be sure.
It is a dilute calico or tortie and you are right, they are 99% of the time female. The OP must have just meant "this little guy" in the general sense of "this little one."

It is, when I went to adopt a kitty I didn’t choose. I sat down on the ground and waited who wanted to come to me and wanted my love. My now kitty came straight to my lap and felt to sleep. I took her, best match ever. She is my world. Also a neighbor senior cat I petted once followed me to home, from then never left, lives here with us now. He chose me instead of his before owners who didn’t even care he was here. (I brought him back several times but within 5 minutes he was back, I told the before owners where I lived but they never came looking for him)

I Grew Up Thinking Huskies Were Majestic. Then I Adopted Argo
I have happy memories of helping a friend of mine trying to get her Husky - Storm - to go home with her following a walk when it was deep snow and bitterly cold. Storm decided to be a Husky and it took 6 futile hours of chasing, cajoling, shouting, bribing and generally being extremely pissed off with her before we finally managed to corral her and get her into the car to get home !! Normally wonderfully well behaved (apart from when deer / rabbits / moles were around), it was v funny though !!
They are goofballs and will argue with you for 45 minutes over nothing. Congrats!
No. Huskies are A-holes. I know this because I have one...and I still LOVE him!

The most appropriate names for them, judging by this picture. Do they sleep in the yin-yang ☯️ position a lot?
Am I the only one who saw this and started to hum the tune “we are Siamese” from Cinderella?
Me. But I thought it was in Lady and the Vagabond perhaps.
Load More Replies...I'm sorry, but I am wondering a little about the term "adopting". Great cats, but have these really been living in a shelter or somewhere on the road? Because those are Siamese, and at least here, you won't get them in a shelter but have to buy them from a breeder or a previous owner. Not saying that couldn't be that they've been abandoned or had previous owners, but it's ... a bit startling, is all.

My Foster Dog Just Got Adopted! I Think He’s Excited
We Adopted A Bulldog Yesterday The Cat Clearly Was Not Excited About It
It’s so good that you have high shelves so she has her own space. Baby gates blocking the doggo out of certain rooms will help her too until they become friends
I love that the shelves are not for decoration obviously and they are for the cat! (Or maybe they used to be for decoration but not anymore😅😅)
Load More Replies...Don’t worry. The cat will have the dog wrapped around their little paw and be bossing them around sooner than you think. If a dog isn’t already wired to like cats, just one very well-timed swipe to the nose is all it takes.
I've had bulldogs on and off for over 20 years and there is no doubt in my mind that they have more quirks, more character than any other dog out there. Some of the stories I could tell.... Lucys-Bell...39474e.jpg

So glad we all fall in love with someone different... then there is a home (hopefully) for all needy animals...
I love posts like these. I've had my pet rabbit for about two years now and our bond is beautiful. I'm so glad to see others and their animal friends sharing the same kind of love.
These are so sweet. I wish I could share my rescue pup! My neighbor rescued him from a trailer home where he was being abused by drug addicts. He's been with me for 3 months and he is the BEST BEHAVED pup and SO LOVING. Seriously I don't know how I lived without a pup.
You could always share a photo in the comments here. So glad you were able to give your pup a loving home.

Thank you all good, loving people😘 Adopting a pet is happiness beyond words. I have never bought an animal, there is always a stray looking for a good home. I'm writing accompanied by my two black cats: Nuna (almost 20!) found as an ill, malnutritioned 6 week old and Inka (1) who found us last September. Can't imagine my home without animal friends. Take care Pandas😉
I love these happy rescue posts! Every photo looks like it's taken from the title sequence of a happy sitcom about a lovable, sassy pet and their lovable but sometimes flabbergasted pet parent.
Nice to see those rescues and them getting home. No wonder bunnies get to be killed and shelters being full of them cause people only adopt cats and dogs. Thats just sad.
That is sad, but it's hardly the fault of the dogs. In my country, no animal brought to a shelter will ever be killed except if they are terminally ill. Not even the rabbits. But you're right, they get adopted a lot less. If you can buy any animal anywhere, it's usually only when they don't want them anymore that people even think of a shelter... So adopt; don't shop!
