Human-Powered Helicopter Stays Up For 64 Seconds and Wins $250K Sikorsky Prize

A Kickstarter-funder human-powered helicopter (HPH) Atlas has finally won the Sikorsky Prize, establish 33 years ago, for spending 64.11 seconds airborne in 10.8 feet altitude, with a drift of 32.1 feet. AeroVelo, an engineering team from Canada, went even beyond the official requirements of the competition, which were asking the participants to have their helicopters up in the air for at least 60 seconds, reaching the altitude of 9.8 feet.

Extreme Plane Landings at Maho Beach, Saint Martin

You’d expect a typical beach to be a nice and quiet haven to relax and chill – but tourists flood the Maho Beach on the Saint Martin island to get exactly the opposite. The beach on the Dutch side of the Caribbean islands is known for all the low-flying airliners, which fly so closely above the beach that people can actually be blown into the water because of the jet blast (or that’s at least what the local government signs warn you about).

People Flying Over New York City

If you saw some people flying over New Your City lately, don’t worry, you are not crazy! To promote their new movie Chronicle, 20th Century Fox hired viral marketing agency Thinkmodo which flew three human shaped RC planes around Manhattan creating the illusion of people flying. I’m not sure how the people of NYC who saw the flying people actually felt, but judging from the video, it must have been pretty awesome. What do you think?

Before the WWII few women followed careers. Most jobs for women were ‘traditional’ roles such as nursing, secretarial or caring jobs.

Only when millions of men joined the armed forces, women took on an active role in World War II and took on many paid jobs that previously had been held by men – such as bank teller, shoe salesperson or aircraft mechanic. It’s hard to believe but some of your grandmothers actually made WWII bombers!
