Guy Wants To Get A Purebred Pug, His Friend Tries To Prove Why It’s Animal Cruelty With Skull Comparison
If a friend tells you that you’re making a mistake, you should at least hear them out. After all, it only shows that they care. So, when Imgur user NoNienNietNon heard that their buddy was getting a purebred dog, they tried their best to convince them to look at other breeds instead of pugs, mainly because of all the health problems these brachycephalic dogs are so prone to.
One concerned person tried to convince their friend to not get a pug
Comparing the breed’s skull those of other dogs, they explained why pugs are so prone to health problems
Pugs’ history goes all the way back to the Chinese Han dynasty (B.C. 206 to A.D. 200). Sources say that Chinese Emperors really valued this dog breed, and kept the pups in luxury. They even sent soldiers to guard the doggos. Now, pugs are one of the most popular dog breeds and are a part of families from all over the world. However, these pups have a lot of health issues worry about.

“The dog types and breeds that are increasing in popularity unfortunately are plagued by a plethora of different health problems – we are talking about issues from head to tail,” Dr Rowena Packer from the Royal Veterinary College told The Guardian. “Whenever we’ve got breeds that do have health problems increasing in popularity naturally we are really concerned about that.”

“We see more short-skulled dogs in publicity and that could be making people more aware of them, and how very charming these dogs can be,” Professor Paul McGreevy added. “These dogs are dying, we think, four years earlier than dogs of the same size with normal-shaped skulls. “Because they have got all of the tissues in their head that a normal dog has, but they have less room, they get dental crowding and they also get the soft palette hanging down – this skull deformation is what gives them the [breathing] sounds,” he said, referring to the snuffling, snorting sounds such breeds often make.

He also said that the wrinkles on their face – caused by excess skin – can lead to eczema and other skin disorders as well as eye problems, while the preference for large heads and small waists in such dogs can cause difficulties during birth. For example, litters of English and French bulldogs are known to require a caesarian section during their delivery.

Here’s what people said about the whole situation
Am i the only person on earth that doesn't like the way Pugs look? Don't want to make a pun but i find them quite pugly.
You are not alone. Pugliness exists indeed. Although to me the problem is not the look, but the cruelty of this business. Anyway: one more vote for the nut cute debate.

Whatever you decide to do, please remember to adopt, don't shop. There are millions of unwanted cats and dogs sitting in shelters getting ready to be euthanized right this second.

What... what do you mean 'kept falling out'? Did it become enlarged and protrude or did it literally leave the socket?
Load More Replies...I must admit I do like a dog to have a proper snout! Though there are other health problems different breeds can get - eg dachshunds with their long backs and very short legs which can cause them pain and problems. That's why rescuing is the best thing to do every time. Or if someone must have a puppy at least find breeders who are at least trying to correct the errors bred in by making faces so short and squashed or any of the other extremes humans have forced upon dogs bodies!
I have a Jug (Jack Russel X Pug), who I think is totally gorgeous. He has the "Pugliness" of a Pug, but without the problems such as breathing, dental and weight. His personality is a good mix of the two, he isn't as hyper as a Jack Russell but still loves to race around the fields and woods after his ball.
Some cats as well. I can remember when even the Persian cats you saw in cat shows still had noses - and it wasn't as long ago as you might think. Now they have the squashed flat faces as well. In just 40 years they've gone from beautiful to depressingly deformed. :-(
The first time I saw these dogs I thought they looked really cute because I love Tarsiers and they reminded me of them. Always dreamed of having one but once I found out about their health problems I researched about why they have breathing problems and now I honestly believe they shouldn't even exist in the first place, my heart literally breaks every time I see one, now it's just sad. It's a horrible thing to breed dogs when you know they're all doomed to have breathing problems. Disgusting. Shame on everyone that carries on breeding these dogs knowing what they go through.
We *really* need to stop breeding brachycephalic dogs and cats. It's so cruel. We make them suffer just because some people like the way it looks. That head shape does not occur in nature for a reason. It's heartbreaking. :-(
To me their faces look nothing like cute but miserable. Breeders should prefer health over shape, imho.
Why did people downvote An Honest Merchant? I don't get it. Unlike most housecats (up until recent decades perhaps), most dogs are bred into much less optimal health, agility, and intelligence than a wolf. They are also bred to retain juvenile characteristics into adulthood such as barking. Which is demeaning. Of course there are some dogs that maybe don't have so many health risk and don't seem deformed like maybe a retriever. But so many breeds are. The wolf is where you are going to see the healthiest of dog breeds.

And basically any "pure breed" just means incest. Any science lovers out there know that genetic diversity is key in health. And this would be the opposite of that.
1. If you want a dog based on breed and look (not the actual dog with a certain character and response to your soul) don't consider yourself a dog lover. 2. If you insist to have a special breed, check out the adoption sites. There are plenty of them specialized the unwanted individuals of wide range of breeds. 3. If you decide to have a dog that will suffer because of health issues and probably will live just a short amount of time, please choose senior adoption. That is an amazing journey that has a special reward: instead of being part of animal abuse you will be basically a saint.
Point 1 is bollocks. So because Id rather have a jack Russell than a staff I'm not a dog lover? You can prefer a breed for their physical attributes and still love all dogs. It's called having a preference. 2. Adoption isn't for everyone. Dogs in shelters often have poor training and behaviours that aren't easily corrected. Some people do not have the time or experience to turn a shelter dog around or their circumstances don't allow adoption (e.g. Because of other pets or children.) I agree that adoption should be considered but there is nothing wrong with going to a reputable breeder who cares about the breed and breeds with a view to improving the health of the breed. 3. Why is someone responsibly taking on a puppy animal abuse? As above if you go to a responsible breeder many dogs can live long happy lives. Dogs from supposedly healthy breeds can have unexpected health problems are those dogs being abused?
Load More Replies...A good friend of my at uni got a pug recently. He bought it with his own money and has started his own fund to pay for any future medical needs for his dog. When I asked why on earth would he encourage such an industry and give himself so much trouble when there are countless dogs euthanised in shelters every day. He explained that his family doesn't have the space or energy for a large dog and his much younger brother is allergic to most dogs. His research showed, he said, that pugs have the best dispositions of all small breeds and are as hypoallergenic as it gets. He swore he'd be the sole caretaker for the dog and found the bestbreeder. He is aware that the pug will definitely require costly treatment that could potentially end its life and would not recommend the breed. I flat-out said that all he had to do was wait two more years, finish uni, get a paid PhD spot (as most of us want here), get his own place and rescue the dog he really wants and that really needs him.
He seemed genuinly surprised and admitted it would have been a good solution if he didnt feel so lonely (he actually had just broken up with a girl he really liked). I'm saying all this because I think that for many, moslty younger fans of pugs, it's the imagined urgency of having a pug, for whatever reason. Then there's also the aesthetic (which I really don't get, it looks like it fell on its head) and the status of the purebred dog (which is gross). But f you really respect and love animals, you'd put their needs first, not the other way round. And if right now you can't have a healthy, happy dog that meets your needs too, then tough luck, buddy.
Load More Replies...A "retro pug" is a pug that is trying to be bred more like it was originally, with a longer snout and healthier than a regular pug
If animal cruelty is against the law, then we can't we charge the breeders with animal cruelty for breeding such dogs? Our idea of what should be against the law and what shouldn't is so very skewed. Vets should just start calling animal welfare on any owner of such a dog that was gotten from a breeder and report that person for animal cruelty. (If the person has such a dog as a rescue, that's a different story.) The huge volume of calls would be too much and would generate an ourcry that might actually get something done.

I know and understand that tastes differ and that things I like may not be to other people's taste and vice versa, but God, pugs are among the ugliest breeds possible and I don't know what made someone breed it like that.
they also fart like crazy, and their eyes look in several directions at the same time. if pugs were humans, do you think anyone would date them? doubt it, so why do people demand animals have deformities we wouldn't tolerate in humans?

Not just toy. Look at what they've done to the German Shepherds with their sloped backs. Constant hip problems and joint pain.
Load More Replies...I guess pug and bulldog owners don't even see it this way. I know someone who has pugs and I just know that if I said that they are deformed and suffering she'd deny it voraciously. So, flat earthers of a different type.
Not just pugs, but "pure breds" in general frequently have genetic dispositions that lead to chronic problems. Bull Dogs have hind leg issues late in life. Dachsunds have back issues and just about all short nose dogs have problems breathing. The good old mutt is ironically the healthiest breed. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/although-purebred-dogs-can-be-best-in-show-are-they-worst-in-health/
Agreed, their faces have changed significantly over time. So many breathing problems. Inbreeding causes extra health problems, as well.
Pugs may be cute. But it's indescribably cruel when you realise they are not natural but a product of warped and inappropriate cross-breeding that means these poor wee devils are essentially born disabled. Any self confessing dog lover should NEVER buy a pug. Only when demand is curtailed through education can we start addressing this abuse.
I'm not a fan of small yappy dogs but the very fact this owner (and so many more) is putting a dog's cuteness level before it's health is disgusting and they should never be allowed to keep pets. Absolutely revolting human being.
I'd just like to comment on that slight misconception - most small dogs don't yap any more than the bigger ones bark. A person might like the sound less but the amount of barking rarely differs based on size - it's the personality of the dog. The smallest dog I've ever had is the quietest I've ever had.
Load More Replies...Poor things often need operations to help them to actually breath. I know of someone who is breeding pugs with longer noses. They look just as cute and are much more healthy.
I'm afraid to say that pugs as a thing shouldn't really exist. It's horrible what pure bred pugs have to live through.
some people are so selfish. I f you feel a dog as a friend you shouldn't look at the animal as an object! they are alive creatures and their emotions and personality that they have make them special creature not how they look like or what color the have! you don't want to buy a car! you want to make a lifelong relation with innocent alive creature....
Pugs have beautiful personalities. Sadly the "rose face" of the show ring has killed the breed. The issues of eyes basically unprotected in sockets, collapsing trachea, issues around brachycephalia and excess tissue around the inside of their throat, pug myelopathy, well, the list is endless. I had only rescues and they are the product of irresponsible breeders. It's heartbreaking to see what they have to go through. They have relentlessly become dog du jour and sadly it's ruinous.
My friend had two pugs since the day I met her, whom she adopted from the local shelter, and just from the sounds they made you could tell how difficult it is to breathe for them; they sounded so unhealthy and twisted, some scifi experiment, but the pain they go through is very real. Imagine this being done to a human. Her dogs passed recently and they had so much love and care from her and they were the most lovable things, so I'm glad that for what struggles their bodies had that they could still have some joy in their lives, but I will completely reject the breeding of pugs.
Breeding on these kinds of dogs needs to be made illegal. There will always be people who buys the dogs either because they have no idea how much the dogs are suffering, or because they simply don't give a f**k about the dogs wellbeing and only want what they think is "cute". Yeah, it's adorable when your dog is constantly struggling to breathe.
Do you know what's not cute? CRUELTY! Human callousness and snobbery have no boundaries. Get a pet from a shelter; save a life. Thousands upon the thousands of healthy, and yes cute, animals are euthanized because nobody cared to give them a second chance in life, nobody even bothered to look at them. Please do not support greedy breeders who do not care about anything and anybody but their profits. Animals are overbred, suffer from numerous health conditions, and you "suffer" financially. Once again, please adopt, don't shop!!!!
I found a blind French bulldog in the middle of the street about a year ago. He was about to get hit by a car. He has rotting teeth and most likely many other heart problems. The next day I took him to the vet to check if he was microchipped and he was so I took him to his owners and they had no idea he was even missing. He got lost when he was going potty. Sure enough he was blind.
Too many dogs have been bred for miserable lives by greedy breeders selling to stupid consumers. Oh, love munchkin cats? They, like Scottish folds, are in pain most of the time. French and English bulldogs need to be inseminated (can't mate normally) and can't give birth without medical intervention. Way too many breeds like that. They need to find the least overbred stock and start over. The AKC and other "pure bred" associations should be ashamed for allowing breed standards to get to this point.
I don't understand how someone could say that a long-nosed dog WASN'T cute, yet they somehow think pugs ARE cute? They look so wrong!
Any dog that looks like it was bred to be less healthy and agile is deformed. I know everyone loves Corgis right now. They have been breed to be deformed like many dog breeds. Not as bad as the pug, but it's a continuum of minor cruelty to major cruelty. Stop it people.
My children and I have always loved Pugs and promised ourselves thay we would save up and get one from a KC registered breeder. I have been very fortunate to home an 18 month old purebred Pug. Not all Pugs have an issue with their breathing, this one certainly doesn't - they are perfect companion dogs and even those that aren't fans of the breed, on meeting her change their minds almost immediately. Don't stop getting a Pug because of what others have told you but make sure you do lots of research into reputable breeders and be prepared to pay plenty of money for one, again alternatively adopt one. Our little Pug has brought smiles of joy since she came to us and isn't overly expensive to insure either.
So how is it cruel to take care of the dog with health issues? Shoul we kill 'em off? Should we do the same with people that have health issues? The dog is already born that wat, it' s not like he'll smash his face in to make him pug. Again, what's crueal about taking good care of dog that has health issues???
Nothing wrong with taking care of a dog with health issues. My issue is the breeders that continue to breed animals they know will have health issues and all they can see is the money
Load More Replies...This is the terrible truth behind the so-called "cute" looks of all short-snouted breeds. Personally, I find it incomprehensible how some find malformities causing breathing problems "cute". Many of these deformed animals also have problems with giving birth. The head of the pups cannot come out normally and a c-section is the only option. Note also that none of the breeds with a shortened snout looked like that fifty or a hundred years ago! The very same problems are present in the now popular new cat breeds that we see so many pictures of on the internet. People, please, they are not cute, they are suffering from severe deformities of their skulls.
It's the ppl who are buying the breeds, that's a breed with an S because you're all guilty of causing terrible health issues for the breeds across the board. Why buy a Pet off someone who makes their living by putting their females through hell so they can charge a ridiculous price for a pup that'll be dead by 6 from cancer? You're all guilty of animal abuse, just different levels. I loathe the s**t out of breeders.
It’s absolutely disgusting what we’re doing to animals for the sake of looks, we’re ruining breeds. It’s not just pugs and French bulldogs either anymore, pomeranians and shih tzus are now classified as borderline brachycephalic as well! The only way to stop this is to stop buying them, sounds bad for the dogs that were bred but it’s the only way to stop these people from breeding more animals that will lead miserable and unhealthy lives.
So what’s the solution? What’s being suggested? Stop allowing the purchase/adoption of them, go door-to-door to forcibly remove any dog that falls under this weird “animal cruelty” measuring stick (bulldogs, dachshund, pugs, other breeds with “known & probable future health problems), and then euthanize all of them? Is that more humane? Mass euthanasia? I’m confused here. Also, if you don’t like pugs… don’t get one? I’m confused…. FFS
Persian and other short snorted cats tend to also have a ton of issues they tend to be prone to cleft palates and not being able to eat without literally dying!
There are many pug mixed breeds without health problems, so if you want to get a cool pug without all the health problems, I recommend getting a mix! They may still have s9me health problems, but not as severe as a purebred.
You don't have a pug do you? You don't know what lovely dogs they make how they fill a gap in your heart. Ok animal cruelty but we didn't make the breed did we? We can't stop the breeders breeding them. If we dont buy the puggies they will all end up in rescues waiting for a home their whole life. I think that's worse then buying a pug. I have a pug and he is my life. AND french bulldogs have worse problems and so with english Bulldogs. Pugs are better than both of them. At least pugs can swim and both the French bulldog and english bulldog would drown.
f**k your fallings.... get this shirt>>https://diptostee.us/fuckyourfeelings
Oh, now I got it: When you say something about cruelty towards a few million pigs, you're a preachy vegan who should mind his own business. But when it comes to dogs, it is totally different. Just like it is with humans - the more they are like you, the more valuable they are, differing in size, colour and similar things make them less of a human. Just as a pig who suffers is not only not worth mentioning, but mentioning it is the worst and most evil part of it all, while, on the other hand, a dog suffering from cruelty should set the entire world into motion to end this, and dare you not to even mention there might be millions of other problems - the sacred cow "Dead Cow" is not to question, like all gods. Talk about double standards...
The problem is people don't think. They don't inform themselves before "wanting" to take care of a living creature. If it looks cute, thell buy without a second thought. And you can save your breath before trying to argue with them, they'll always hit you with their "Well but it already lives so Imma take it with me no matter what you say!".
People have such a problem with pugs. Mine has never been to the vet since its first set of puppy shots. And she's had two litters of mixed pups. Ive never had any problems with her. Shes breathes fine and is still a spry as a puppy at 7.. Idk what yall have been doing but youre doing it wrong.
My friend has a pug and everyone fawns over the buddy but looking at him just makes me feel sad and guilty. At least they got him from a shelter but I don't think I could handle having a pup that I know is suffering every moment of its life...
I also agree that these poor little dogs are bred to suffer. Breeders are also currently deforming other breeds, like German Shepherds. What was formerly a beautiful, strong dog that was originally bred for the physically demanding job of herding sheep is now a hump-backed caricature of its former self. They look relatively normal from the front, but are now bred (for the show ring) with dreadfully sloped backs, legs that actually cross over each other when moving, and awful hip and back problems. My sister used to have German Shepherds, and they were a far cry from the 'fashionable' deformed dog of recent years.
Years ago I read an article about pugs and why people were attracted to them. Flat face, big eyes, big head, small body, all the ingredients for resembling a small child. Concern was expressed about breeding these traits in the pugs. I guess they have kept selected breeding. Just recently I read an article urging pug owners to get their pups a nose job to help them breathe. So you should be financially able to adopt a pug. It would be like adopting a handicapped child.
I have been breeding Boston Terriers for 35 years. They all have flat faces and NOT 1 of them has ever had health problems. Why? Because I do health certifications on all my dogs before breeding. When you buy from the newspaper your are not buying a healthy pup from generations of healthy parents. Bad breeders breed unhealthy dogs! Go to the AKC Website and find out what health certifications are needed for your breed of choice. Ask for copies of all the certifications ( mine are automatically in the puppy packet) If they don't have them walk out the door without a puppy.
My grandma had 2 pugs and as long as I knew them they've been old. One died not to long ago.
My parents had a pure bred Pekingese when I was a kid. Yet a different squashy faced doggo. He had mild breathing problems but his skin rashes and epilepsy were worse. He had a severe epileptic seizure when he was only a few years old and did not recover. 😢 I’m completely against pure bred dogs (of any variety) as they tend to have more health problems. If you want a dog, go get a mutt from the shelter. Don’t encourage breeders.
The same about cats with short legs, people think they're cute, but they can hardly walk. Or naked cats and dogs, they could never live without the help from humans, wearing clothes, getting rubbed with creams, and so on! The animal is beautiful as it is, it's humans who are ugly.
i have a pug boston terrier mix i got from a shelter she is over 8 years old very loving loves people hates other dogs took her to a trainer and he couldn't break her out of it her eyes water sometimes but no other problems great dog would not give her up for anything
We had a Japanese Chin for many years. It was a pedigree from a long line of champions.Yes,humans have bred them to look the way they do but they have looked like that for hundreds of years. All dogs have been modified in some way by humans, otherwise they would be pure bred wolves or Dingoes.... 2019-04-12...d1c9f0.jpg

Maybe look at a cross breed pug it might have less health issues and better chance of survival
Some pugs may have breathing problems but I have owned three and they are great pets, two of my pugs lived 14 and 15 years the one I have now is 16 months old.pugs aren't as fragile as this article says, they don't take hot weather well, other than that all my pugs have been healthy.i love pugs they are great family pets
I have 2 pugs my self. One was given to my Son as a gift. I bought the other one. They both been healthy. Would buy another one!
Load More Replies...it's worth noting, that pugs did NOT originally look like this. The current pug, is a breeding choice made, over generations of dogs, to CREATE this look. It is NOT the norm for what the breed SHOULD be. (the ultimate cruelty... the breeding choices, were to win dog shows ie for the vanity of a human)
I cannot believe that is their skull! It looks very deformed. Poor doggies :(
I actually think governments should step in, it should not be a choice for individuals. Here in the UK we have the dangerous dogs act which as the name says bans certain dogs that are considered dangerous the law should be broadened to include cases like this.
Also, in Europe spider pythons are banned. These are ball pythons (the most popular pet snake) with a mutation that makes their patern spider-like. Unfortunately, all spider pythons have neurological issues spanning from mild to extreme: their head wobbles, they're disoriented, some can't even swallow their food. It's quite painful to watch actually. Recently they were banned and it couldn't be better. All ball pythons are pretty and good tempered, not to mention countless pattern mutations for those who want them for display. Same with pugs and dogs. If you specifically want a pug but no other dog, then you probably don't want a pug either.

If you want a wonderful and amazing dog, go to an animal shelter. Two things will happen: you will transform their life for the better, and you will be a better person for having the love of a great doggo.
Okay, but shout out to the person who responded with a Shakespeare quote.
But pugs exist ! I mean there are hundreds of pugs out there already . Someone has to take care of them ! Should we just kill them all and never breed more ?? Never breeding more is a good idea but someone has to take care of the ones who are already here. And stupid people are gong to adopt them and not get them spayed/neutered and then there will be more pugs. Not adopting a pug is stupid. The ones who are here already deserve a good home. Its not their fault they are pugs.
Yes but if a breeder is unable to sell the puppies for a fortune because they are less popular they will be less keen to breed them. Puppies are expensive to rear - breeders want their money back (and a massive profit) but if they can't do that and have to sell at a loss because people are saying 'this isn't what we want' then they will have to fall in line. Also, if people show a clear demand for pugs that are being retro-bred with longer snouts then some breeders will, motivated by money, change how they breed. It will take time but something MUST be done. Rescue centres usually spay/neuter or demand that you do so that any adopted animals won't add to the poor gene pool. It really is down to people to show a lack of demand for the dogs with such poorly formed heads. No one said not to adopt - they want people not to shop.
Load More Replies...Pugs are usually in a great deal of discomfort. You may not recognize that, but they struggle to breathe, to eat, to chew. Dogs should be able to tolerate some heat. Heaven forbid you need to get somewhere by plane with your dog(s.) Pugs, like French bulldogs and other brachycephalic animals, really should never fly. It can be fatal. Does that sound like responsible breeding? You are right to love your dear dogs, but I would hope you would continue to adopt and not feed the puppy mill and breeders who show no responsibility in aiming for healthier genetic traits.
Load More Replies...People should at least research breed health before making any kind of purchase and not just go by looks - if you buy based on looks then you are part of the problem.

Load More Replies...'Responsible' breeding is behind the mishapen skull in the photos!!! No dog was EVER meant to have a head that shape. You can disagree but maybe you had one of the more rare breeders who are retro breeding purely for health and giving these dogs back a healthier head shape. Be reasonable - you have only had three dogs out of the thousands that have a myriad of health problems caused entirely by breeders making their faces so terribly squashed. Looks before health has caused all of the health problems these dogs have.

My husband and I have had a female pug for years she is 11 . She is my heart my savior she has seen me through my mother's death,a house fire ,we lost everything we had only the clothes on are backs .living in a rental while my mom died of brain cancer. Are building contractor from hell . It has been a year and we still don't have a place to live it is still not done lawyers court . She is the only reason I carry on some days . I would love her no matter what she looks like. But only a pug owner knows what it means to have a pug in there life.

I had a Pug x Border terrier he had no health issues and was more pug in his way's than terrier, he was the most loving happy little dog and I loved him to bits, he was a rescue....
I have a pug but he was a rescue dog. He ia very muched loved with me but yes they have alot of issues and they can be very poorly touch wood mine hasn't had anything massive but i will pay the earth for my pug

Load More Replies...In sorry, it's very obvious that you love pugs, but they're nkt known for being very smart.
Load More Replies...Careful, your ignorance is showing. Just find a photo of a pug from the early 20th century and you'll see they have longer, healthier muzzles, just as bulldogs did. Breeding for shorter and shorter faces happened i the last 30 years or so.
Load More Replies...No, it isn’t and no, they don’t. Buying a pug encourages the industry. There are no wholesome places to get pugs. Didn’t you read the article? Or are you confusing adopting from the shelter with buying?
