80+ Beautiful Street Crimes done by BANKSY

Asked about his technique, Banksy said: “I use whatever it takes. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl’s face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key.”

Oh, wait! Maybe we should start by explaining who the heck is Banksy first of all?

Who is Banksy?

Banksy is a quasi-anonymous English graffiti artist. According to Tristan Manco, Banksy “was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier technician, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s.” His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics.

He’s gone from a teenage tagger to a well-known artist making multi-million dollar art. His style and message have, ironically, been wholeheartedly embraced by the very type of people he mocks.

Can I buy one?

According to Wikipedia, Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti (why should anyone be interested in buying PHOTOS of graffiti in the first place?). Art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder.

Technique

He mentions in his book, ‘Wall and Piece‘, that as he was starting to do graffiti that he was always too slow and was either caught or could never finish the art in the one sitting. So he devised a series of intricate stencils to minimise time and overlapping of the colour.

Enough of the theory, I’m sure most of you know more about him and will share it in the comment section. Happy scrolling!

“Ignorance can be costly in the Banksy exploitation business. It was reported that “bungling workmen painted over a mural by famed street artist Banksy worth £100,000″. Last week, 60-year-old Sam Khan, purveyor of luggage and football scarves to the denizens of Tottenham Court Road, London, was inconsolable after flogging a Banksy that had been painted on his stall for £1,000 and discovering that it could be worth £500,000. Poor love.” (guardian.co.uk)

Banksy’s real name is not, as is commonly believed and has been widely reported, Robert or Robin Banks. In July 2008, it was claimed by The Mail on Sunday that Banksy’s real name is Robin Gunningham

Banksy’s New Orleans Tour

Banksy’s recent journey to America included a trip to New Orleans to decorate some of the buildings affected by Hurricane Katrina. On his website, Banksy talks about his first impressions of Nola: “I looked out the window of the taxi on the drive into New Orleans and remarked – “There’s still so much devastation – I can’t believe they haven’t cleaned this mess up.” To which the driver stared at me and said “This part of wasn’t affected by the hurricane – it’s always looked like this.”

Banksy in Palestine

“How illegal is it to vandalize a wall”, asks Banksy in his website introduction to his Wall project, if the wall itself has been deemed unlawful by the International Court of Justice? The Israeli government is building a wall surrounding the occupied Palestinian territories. It stands three times the height of the Berlin wall and will eventually run for over 700km – the distance from London to Zurich.

The “guerrilla artist” Banksy has helped to transform the security barrier that surrounds the town with more than a dozen satirical images painted, plastered and sprayed on to the 8m-high (26ft) concrete. The work winds a trail to the heart of the city at Manger Square, where more than a dozen pieces are housed directly across from the Church of the Nativity. More info on the Wall project, here. Wach video here.

Girl and a Soldier

Located on the side of a building in Bethlehem, Occupied West Bank. The piece is located on one of the main roads, leading out towards the Bethlehem checkpoint to Jerusalem. It is drawn on the side of a building, not on the Wall itself, largely for security reasons. The soldiers do not take kindly to professional entities spending a lot of time at one place on the Wall. Such people are generally arrested for terrorist activity and accused of trying to destroy, blow up, or weaken the structure.

In February, 2008 a stencilled graffiti work appeared on Thames Water tower in the middle of the Holland Park roundabout, and it was widely attributed to Banksy. It was of a child painting the tag “Take this Society” in bright orange. London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham spokesman, Councillor Greg Smith branded the art as vandalism, and ordered its immediate removal, which was carried out by H&F council workmen within three days

The Westminster City Council stated in October 2008 that the work “One Nation Under CCTV”, painted in April 2008 will be painted over as it is graffiti. The council says it will remove any graffiti, regardless of the reputation of its creator, and specifically stated that Banksy has no more right to paint graffiti than a child. The work was painted over in April 2009.

I am impressed by the way graffiti can be tastefully and artistically done. Banksy is truly an artist with a keen eye and an ability to make use of existing features of a wall, and with a bit of paint, make something appealing from what would otherwise be considered an eyesore. It is unfortunate that Banksy, like so many other artists, expresses such a narrow and mindless worldview in many of his works. All the works are so artistically well done, it is disappointing to see political drivel and the regurgitation of unscrutinized left-wing ideology almost always make an appearance in such art and dampen the enthusiasm first felt by many viewers of this incredible work. Oh well. . . I guess that I can suffer being called a capitalist-pig-dog every once in awhile if it means that I can enjoy some of the interesting interactions of Banksy’s subjects and their “canvases”.

  • sol’Jah

Blank walls in Melbourne could be Banksy because he came out there and did his art in a club when I was there. Feel lucky to have spent years living in Bristol and seeing a new piece of quality Art by this, not just one of the best stencil artists but also a great thinker to come up with such inspiring ideas/designs behind his work. Swamp Angel I disagree with your comment about “..mindless and narrow world view..”.

His work unlike nearly all other street art is full of mind and his world view is ‘narrow’ only in the sense that most people take the wide road view of believing all the lies and rubbish they hear in the media and coming from a lot of politicians mouths.
His work reveals that he is a free thinker and doesn’t just go with the flow like most people tend to do. Does any Government, Royal family, dictator, ruling army etc, really want a nation of free thinking individuals who think for themselves or would they prefer masses of their countries population to be more ‘sheep like’ and just believe what their told and not question their, ruler’s, law makers actions?

Say actions like taking a countries army (made up mainly of sons & fathers) into an illegal, dangerously amoral war? Or brainwashing the majority of the population with very limited media views and making it seem like your ‘free’ as long as you are believing/doing what your told and being a good worker/consumer and not asking for more equality between the rich and poor?
I mean its not like our own rich wealthy politicians or bankers are dishonest is it!? Apart from of course the ‘one or two’ dishonest politicians with their second home tax claims or the multi million pound bonus scheme for bank workers whose actions caused a worldwide economic crash. No nothing wrong with our banks or our Banksy!

I just try to do my bit keeping my own house in order & not judging others for what I might disagree with. Like seeing such poverty and homeless people in such wealthy UK cities and seeing the homeless hostels shut down because of the councils funding issues etc.
Being very well off/ super rich in this country and world even! when such poverty is all around if you choose to look for it I’m sure my conscience would be constantly making sure that I was doing my bit to help those fellow brothers & sisters who might be suffering in anyway.
Like those who work in a poor country to make items that are sold in a richer country for such a bigger profit. Seeing improvements during my last 3 decades living in this part of the ‘west’ and also declines in so many areas of public life in these ‘modern’ times.

With all the latest news on religious terrorist tensions aside and the divorce/ single parent rates, youth crime levels, our lack of male role models?, our otherwise friendly British ‘communities’ with everyone helping each other out and supporting our local industry, like farms and markets instead of mass profit supermarket chains, what basically in a wise and sensible, just age would be limited and even shut down for their greed and ‘sins’ against humanity, plants and animals basically all life! How can they even throw away/bury the thousands of tones of food in a damaged tin/box instead of just using it to feed those who live in poverty in this very country!? Oh yeah I forgot PROFIT! Surely it costs just as much to pay for its removal etc?

We know alcohol and tobacco have killed more people in this country then all the ‘illegal’ drugs put together and there both legal and the easiest to buy and take and regulate. Which is like saying just as long ‘We’ the rulers & Government get the profit you can do/take what you want. But if any other ‘body’ makes a profit, an untaxed one at that even! then its time to call in our boys in blue which creates another industry even! Courts, Prisons the justice system.

Well I’ve tried them all, tobacco to crack, mostly only once or twice, some others in moderation and thank the maker as I have only been a regular user of cannabis and alcohol but was able to stop them both a few years ago! Chocolate & sugar was a tough one to give up! Internet porn was pretty easy though. Even though I read millions view it on a daily basis which causes more business and profit but helps our society & world in no moral way, even causing sexual thoughts/ thinking and you could say ‘un sacred’ living.

Some believe our bodies are after all temples for our immortal spirits! I try and keep all negative stuff and all chemicals out my body (temple) including the ones in so much of the supermarket type food.

When any organisation or business is focused purely on making a profit, as we see clearly in the production of the mass meat market with 250,000 birds kept in one single room injected with growth hormones etc & 1000′s of cows skinned alive (see the Guardian 22nd Feb) the only thing really being cared about (not being the product/ animal or even the consumer/human, both with eyes & feelings/senses) but purely the amount of profit and money made.

I guess profit is one of the main reasons for all businesses to exist and some say the money earned by the super rich trickles down to the poor because of our system of economy and business set up. Like a politician or a banker getting£1000 an hour/day and say a retail worker or a street sweeper £5 an hour. Just a shame that all have to share the same city where a loaf of bread costs the same for both workers.
Now if U got a loaf of bread for 10p because you get £5 an hour and a loaf of bread for £5 if your on £1000 a day it might be much easier to exist and live side by side sharing a country without the rich getting richer and poor poorer.

A lot of stuff in this United Kingdom, where I was lucky enough to be born, I still don’t understand or agree with but then again I’m not making the rules, laws and controlling the country. I’m just grateful for all that I have in my life even if its not much at all! Because I know others who have less or who suffer more for many various reasons.

If I was ruling my own country it would be a lot more fairer, equal, honest & transparent place to live in. I can make choices & decisions, ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ ones and hopefully learn from them as I grow in wisdom and in knowledge.
I relate to Banksy’s art work being an artist myself and being quite rebellious in childish ways, like cutting my school tie in half, not understanding why I just had to wear one?!
And like when I was lined up with all other school children along the wall and given a union Jack to wave, which I replaced with a branch; ) because a certain rich wealthy Prince called Charles was being driven past our school. I got in trouble for both of these actions. I wonder if the one or two teachers who bullied me in class for some reason B4 the age of 10 years eventually got in trouble?
I know this country is far from perfect but still better in many ways for our human rights and freedoms than many others. I believe in peace and that true justice will be given out on all people and nations all in good (God’s) time. I rebelled against my parents and their Christian ‘God’ I was brought up with and told to obey.

I was though it seems on reflection a natural born experiment(or) always testing and experimenting with whatever I could from pre-teen into my 30′s. And also questioning the actions decisions of the people, teachers, bosses ‘above’ me. I have studied the arts, media & many topics, having had a love for most of the modern day sciences, and have in recent years been studying many of our faiths and world religions and new age beliefs. Of course forming my own opinions and views on the information that I have taken in.

Once i was a science based atheist, with all my arguments against a belief in God or gods based on my own life experiences, the science I had studied and what I’d learnt etc. But now I am not an atheist because of experiences over the last say 5 years?

Sacred teaching’s such as ‘treat others as you want to be treated yourself’ and ‘to store up your treasures in ‘heaven’ and not on earth’ and ‘don’t look outside of yourself for the leader’ give me a reason to be positive about my future.

Well Just a bit about my views being a long time supporter of Banksy and Banksy type art work and political/ society views

  • http://brazilbrat.blogspot.com/ James Smith João Pessoa, Brazil

Artist? All graffiti people are vandals engaged in destroying other people’s property and calling it “art”. The should all be in jail and taken out each day to clean their scribblings off walls, then returned to jail each night.

True, some show real talent. So then let them paint on canvas or other media that belongs to them. If I catch anyone spray painting my walls, they will never do it again after I break both their hands and arms. Damn vandals.

  • Maggie MacKinnon

    I LOVE BANKSY!!
    I BOUGHT HIS BOOK !! :)

  • dinosaurJR

    @ No. 17.

Banksy is NOT a vandal – he takes the depressing urban canvas and creates funny thought provoking pieces of art. It is the local authorities that remove these pieces that are the true vandals.

I think you might be confusing art with “tagging”. This is the act of writing ones name on a wall or other surface. That is not art.

Many of these pieces seem to be directly ripped from Shep Fairey’s work. His exhibit came to the ICA Boston and the similar themes of children and warfare carry throughout. I feel like Shepard Fairey’s works are more raw and a little less pretentious. Just an opinion, and I don’t know who came first, him or Banksy.

Vandalism is the willful destruction or defacement of private or public property. Regardless of the artistic merit (of which there is much) or the message (which is often thought-provoking), Banksy is engaging in vandalism, with the exception of those times where he has been given permission.

    The definition is quite immovable.

That said, I very much enjoy his work, as do many people (civil authorities included). It is a difficult line to draw, and I am ill-at-ease to proclaim any kind of conclusion as far as this being a bad thing, just as much as I have issue with justification of this behavior.

The two things that I feel I can say as fact is that these works are by and large illegal, and that they are things of great beauty.

    Sigh.

I dont say yay or nay to his work because 1 it is art and 2 it is crime. However, Dan Silver, you seem so completely redundant to even be in existence with other people. Its people like you who live their entire lives thinking they are great but in the end put a pistol in their mouth. BTW im sorry your dad plugs you and im also sorry you have to take your anger out on other artists because you probably arent creative enough to come up with something on your own. Lastly, you have made yourself sound so remarkably dumb with your un-witty words.

It’s so cool how he (or they, if he has a team) can pull of creating the larger works without getting caught.

  • http://slrman.wordpress.com James Smith

I do know the facts, something you don’t care about any more than you do good English.  Anyone that paints graffiti on my walls had better pray they are not caught by me.  The last one couldn’t hold a spray can afterwards.

  • http://slrman.wordpress.com James Smith

WTF are you talking about?  Better lay off the booze or drugs and let your head clear up, if it still can.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Miller/743275334 Matt Miller

I really like the ones where he makes fun of other peoples shittier graffiti, like the artist with the penis.

  • Anonymous

Sounds like you need a brain and to learn respect for the property of others.  James Smith didn’t propose letting killers and rapists go free to incarcerate vandals.  That’s your stupid idea.  I agree with Smith.  If I catch anyone painting my walls without my permission I’ll beat them to death with their own intestines.

  • Lex Diamonds

does anyone know where the “life is beautiful” piece located

  • hater of the haterz

then why has has some of his “vandalism” sold for upwards of 100,000$$$$$$$

  • hater of the haterz

I would enjoy spraying on your walls and then see you trying to catch me because by the looks of it your old!

  • skanby

please can you post a link to your art. thanks. banksy

  • Guyrowlands

I work for an urban arts / environmental magazine and we could really do with some people who so inspired that they feel the need to post their entire A-Level arts essay on a little know websites comments board. Get in touch, please – now!

  • ~autonomy~

does anybody know where james smith’s walls are?!! i drew up some scribblings for his poor, lonely, naked walls, i just wanna share the love of color and culture to a sad old man and his pre-historic ideals. even cave men were mentally ahead of this “james smith” they used grafitti on rocks to show they werent afraid to express themselves and customize their environment at the same time. but thats probably a pointless arguement since mr. james smith probably believes the earth is only 5000 years anyway

  • Speighticus

The Naked Man in Bristol has since been defaced by some horrible person :’(

  • Mia

Banksy is amazing and that is why i am doing most of my art work based on him :) x loving the art work keep it up!! x

  • Jimmy Riddle

  • L. Findley

    God-speed, Bansky.

  • Wingnutyoyo

hey moron, you express yourself by breaking arms and legs he expresses himself by painting great works of art. violence the last resort of the inarticulate and untalented. moron! ps i doubt you have any walls. and yeah real good idea fill jails with non violent criminals. morons run the world that’s why people write on walls. moron!

  • Wingnutyoyo

  • Wingnutyoyo

warhol thats who came first or was it campells soup thats who came first then andy rented a cheap warehouse loft in nyc learned hoe to silk screen and copied things got a fucked up wig and made afortune coping things that already existed like celebrities a pre sold product how easy is that until you get sued because you didnt create that famous photgraph that you are ripping off. so just get a projector and project the photos onto canvas or cardbord and paint over the image or cut out the card board and you can be an artist too. or just get a coloring book or paint by numbers. i like banksys art but the art he creates is the placement  and the message, the statement he makes and he has agreat imagination or is on prozac. i like very much liked the way he dissed mbw on exit through the gift shop lol. he should call himself mr bullshit everyone else did his work for him and i so loved elvis with a rifle which he copied from david with a rifle such a blatant rip off what we like to call an evolution, but the show he created or directed was brilliant typical la bullshit but he sold over 1 million the first week lol  and madona had him do her album cover. which was just a copy of a photo and photoshop i mean real shit. the art is selling this crap that what makes mbs an artist. i believe banksy is a true artist and i like his work but its all just an evolution of an old tecnique mad famous by the hype artist warhol who would have been nothing without the artist who crated the campbell soup can. who was that artist and who did he or she copy.

  • Wingnutyoyo

banksys work speaks. and i love what it says. he says what we feel. and i like that it is on walls and buildings. who said they could put those buildings and walls there anyway can only the rich express themselves in our society in our enviornment because they have the thugs to stop us from painting on their buildings. who said they could own the land in the first place. they did because they have all the money and the thugs to back them up. well f*ck them. eat the rich!

  • Felicia

    Love his work. Nuff said

  • Karensinclairdeeks

An intelligent artist making a real point…not pretending a horse is a unicorn, like some others…..I adore his work and so do all my friends and family, many a night going through my book and talking the significance of each work…we call him the stealth night fox

  • Karensinclairdeeks

Doubt you will post this but i wrote it last year

We might have a “Banksy” in Old Town (near 1060 N. Main Street) in Cottonwood, Arizona

  • juan

yes it is true, every wall should be white….and if you want to see art you go to a museum, if you are bored you watch tv a lot of it….. especially CNN and if we don´t like something we should get reallly aggressive… how knows… it could be a terrorist who did it…

  • http://slrman.wordpress.com James Smith

Did I say every wall should be white? I did say that vandalizing other people’s property is a crime. Is that not true?

I also said when I catch people defacing my property, I make them regret it. Want to try me?

  • dani

If street art was legal then there wouldnt be as much value in the great pieces that are created by street artist such as banksy. Just think about it

  • acab

You could say that Banksy borrowed quite a few ideas from Blek, that’s
true. However, those aren’t the same pieces of art, even tho they do
look alike. So please, if you like either Blek or Banksy, at least try getting to know their work before making such accusations.
