I Photographed Pedigree Rescue Dogs To Show That It’s Not Just Mutts Who End Up At Shelters (26 Pics)
I'm a passionate proponent of shelter dog adoption. I have several mixed-breed rescue dogs and I honestly don't have a particular dog breed preference. I am, however, aware that some people do, so for this project, I shifted my focus to the realm of purebred dog adoption and what I uncovered in the process was alarming, to say the least.
Whilst mixed-breed dogs often find themselves unwanted and surrendered to shelters thanks to unchecked breeding, they have no intrinsic saleable value, which puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to adoptees wanting a dog of a specific breed and at a clear advantage because, unlike their pedigree counterparts, they can't be traded like commodities.
During the process of creating this series of work, Dogs Unleashed, I discovered that the previously unwanted pedigree dogs I photographed found themselves in need of rehoming for three main reasons: a lack of understanding of breed-specific requirements, no longer being of financial use to a breeder, and puppy mill breeders closing or offloading their pups.

Akela - Unwanted By Her Owners
I would take this one in a heartbeat!! I know these.....I have one....
Firstly, it’s essential to research the dog breed you’re considering acquiring. One of my models, Leila the bluetick coonhound, is now in her seventh (and forever) home. Coonhounds are similar to German shorthaired pointers in that they are extremely active and need A LOT of physical and mental stimulation. As a result of originally being acquired by people who had no understanding of the breed, Leila scaled walls, escaped multiple times, and got herself caught in snares whilst out and about. Her unruly (and quite natural) behavior led to her being given up repeatedly. This is a common problem for active, busy, working breeds.
Milo - Confiscated From An Abusive Home
Those eyes! Makes me so angry when people abuse defenseless animals. When you are a frustrated loser and want to hurt someone, mess with me - or better with my hubby. We also have a rescue, the sweetest deerhound in the world, who was heavily abused, beaten and all, afraid of his own shadow, skin and bones. Broke my heart. And today, I kidd you not, people stop their cars to tell me what a beautiful and noble dog I have. Turned out he came from a champion breeder. 099edd3c-a...090a87.jpg
A dappled doxie! My dad's side of the family has always had doxies. Such little characters!
He´s an odd-eyed (iris heterochromia) beauty. Why do people buy a dog to abuse him then??? I`m so glad he´s out of that abusive hands...
Leo - Found Wandering The Streets Of Johannesburg As A Stray
love dobies! life brought me boxers & mutts after my last dobie, helda, passed. after my mom passed i suggested to my dad that he get a pup for company. my folks always had dogs, up to 7 at one time, but they were all small breeds. last christmas i told him i would get him any dog he wanted-just tell me what kind. after a couple of days he announced he wanted a dobie which surprised me. so, enter ruby rose-a red dobie. mentioned to my son my surprise at his selection and that was when he quietly told me that dad didn't get the dobie for himself but for me...because he knows he won't outlive the dog and that is why my dad has insisted on her spending lots of time with me in order to bond. i'm a little dense sometimes but this totally made sense. as for dad and ruby...he's learning about their personalities but he seems so much happier with her in his life.
Eventually by Sidewalk Specials??? They rescue a lot of pups in South Africa.
As well as making sure you choose the right breed for you and your family, choosing the right breeder is essential. Not all breeders have their dogs’ best interests at heart, many are simply motivated by the money they can earn from selling puppies with no care for the welfare of their breeding dogs.
Brooklyn-Stella the bulldog, Queenie the Chihuahua, and Lisa the schnauzer were all given up for adoption once they were no longer financially useful to their breeders. Brooklyn's breeder attempted to sell her off on Facebook and both Queenie and Lisa spent their lives caged in a backyard producing puppies. Getting adopted in their senior years is the first time they’ve been part of a family. When you, often unwittingly, financially support breeders like this by buying puppies from them, you’re supporting animal exploitation and cruelty.
Riley - Left To Fend For Herself At A Rental Property
SOMEONE GIVE THIS DOG A LOVELY HOME AND FOOD OMFG!!!!
Load More Replies...Dalmations are hard, they are one-person dogs. This gentleman is a fine fellow, and will make someone an excellent companion.
They need proper training yes, but my boss has a Dalmatian, he was her "firstborn" but he loves her two little humans, and he's a sucker for ear scritches
Load More Replies...↖️ My mom had two different Dals growing up. Then, after my parents married, we got Franny, then after Franny passed, we had Lexy, and now we have Lily. My dad's name is Riley. This Rileyooks wonderful. I hope someone wonderful gives her a wonderful home. She deserves it
Gunther - Now In His Fourth (And Final) Home He Was Passed Around From Place To Place By People Who Couldn't Cope With Him
Oh if that home doesn’t work out send him over to me!!!!! My golden would love him!!!!!
How could you not cope with such a gorgeously obvious nutter butter?
Ah well but I bet he isn’t more energetic than my Westie dog Mint *facepalm* so why do they get rid of such cute doggo
My Great Dane was the only dog of mine not heavily abused. I hope he finds a home. (Edit:they weren’t abused by me, just for clarity)
Kennel Club registration is meaningless when it comes to the welfare standards of a pedigree dog breeder, so doing your homework is essential.
As a champion of the adopt don’t shop message, I will always encourage you to adopt your dog breed of choice. A quick Facebook or Google search will tell you that there’s a rescue organization for your favorite breed and sometimes they even have puppies available.
Callie - Rehomed After Her Breeder Died
He's cool. His hair is clean. If you want your dog to be so clean, this is very helpful: https://bit.ly/jonespetshop
The problem is that if we keep paying high prices for dogs then these idiots will keep breedign them badly to make money. If we stop paying for them they will stop breeding and people who really care about dogs will breed them and sell them for what they are worth. The cost of breeding, food and injections and not thousands for profits.
Jesse - Given To A Weimaraner Rescue After She Broke Her Leg And The Owners Couldn't Afford The Vet Bills
I feel the owners did the responsible thing I this case. Circumstances changed and thy could no longer care foe her, so gave her to an organization that could provide the best home.
Thanks for saying this. It's a rare opinion to see voiced on a site like this.
Load More Replies...My dog needed a 2000 pound operation to save her life, I went without everything for that op, she's my baby, if I'd do it for my kids, I'll do it for my dogs ❤️
Life happens - they might've had a rough year and then this happened ,resulted in them not knowing there's aid available and not having the money for the treatments.
Load More Replies...This isn't a purebred, they don't have spots. I rescued a purebred Boston terrier once, I would have never paid for him, but he was in a bad situation so I told the owners I was going to either take him or call the authorities. If anything serious would have happened to him the first year that I had him I would have been screwed bc I broke my arm shortly after I got him and wasn't able to work. Luckily I recovered and was able to afford to save his life when his spleen ruptured, but had that happened when I first got him, I wound not have been able to afford that.
Load More Replies...If you do have your heart set on a particular breed of puppy, there are plenty of responsible breeders out there, here’s how to spot one:- You’ll likely be added to a waitlist:
- Visiting the mom and pups at their premises won’t be an issue
- Pups will only be available from 8 weeks old (10 to 12 weeks is preferable)
- You’ll be able to collect your puppy from them
- The breeder will ask you to sign a contract that stipulates your pup being sterilized, that you can’t breed with your pup and that should you no longer be able to care for your pup, you’ll return the dog to them
- They’ll ask you for references from your vet
- You’ll receive proof that both the pup’s parents were screened and cleared of breed-specific genetic problems
- They won’t be selling a collection of different dog breeds
Nova - Surrendered To A Shelter Because She Was Born Deaf So Of No Saleable Value To Her Breeder
I have had two boxers others did not want. The two I had were perfectly healthy but too active or mischievous for their owners. The first I got as a puppy and kept her till she died. She loved me and loved her till the day she died in her old age. The other I got as an adult, and he is beautiful and fun. Know the breed before you buy. Dogs are champions of overcoming disabilities.
As a deaf person myself, I hope Nova finds a kinder home than the one she left. Poor little bean <3
A dog without hearing can do just fine--they can smell and see perfectly well. She'd make someone a great, loving pet.
Yeah, my first dog became deaf in her old age but she still loved going for walkies and cuddles.
Load More Replies...I never thought about dogs being deaf until I watched a program about a deaf ladt who had a deaf dog. She taught it sign language for things like walkies, dinner time, bed time. I thought it was so cool I taught my Border Collie some for sit, stay and fetch so we can play and not annoy other people.
Because they want full price. For them, it's about $$$, defects in some dogs have gotten them put down . Although, some breeders will still sell them regardless of the defect.
Load More Replies...That breeder is a complete idiot, first breed a white pup or cat, then abandon it if it´s born deaf.
We animal lovers all know that white dogs, cats and eventually rabbits too are very likely to be born deaf and/or blind.
Load More Replies...My fur baby boy is deaf...We didn't know until two weeks in. People ask us if we are lying because he acts like any other dog and we still talk to him lol.
Twig - Left Behind When Her Owners Emigrated
Happened to my rescure dog too. Someone from the UK adopted him in Spain when he was a puppy and when they moved back to the UK they didn't want to bring him.. Lucky for me, because he is the best and most loyal dog in the world. And he's actually also a sighthound, like this girl here.
One friend had to give up their dog, because they would have to go through quarantine of the animals. In some countries, this could last 4-6 months. So the dog gets given away, surrendered,. Some have even just been abandoned.
It's hard to take an animal to a different country with transportation fees and quarantine. Gotta have deep pockets, at least in the United States.
Okay, we don´t know the circumstances, eventually the pup would´ve had to spend months in quarantine before the owners could´ve taken it to their new domicile. In some countries it is so.
As dog lovers, we have the power to protect the welfare of animals by making more informed and ethical choices and I hope this project promotes doing just that.
I photographed 68 dogs for my Dogs Unleashed series (all of whom are now happily in their forever homes), you can see more images and find out about the individual dogs’ stories on my website and Instagram which you can find at the beginning of the post!
Bonnie - Found Wandering The Streets After Escaping From A Backyard Breeder
Basset hounds just seem to know how to escape from yards. (Had one as a kid.)
I hate breeders so much…😔 And people who want the newest fashionable pedigree though shelters are filled up with unwanted dogs - to me hybrids are the best, no health issues of overbreeding
do you mean backyard breeders? because a propper breeder makes sure that none of the dogs have health issues and tries their hardest to keep them out of shelters and pounds.
Load More Replies...Eventually she escaped from becoming a "birth machine" there... Like it happens to many female pups at backyard breeders´ .
Lisa - Used As A Puppymill Machine Until She Was Too Old
My cousin rescues puppy mill mums. The happiness and love they display at the simplest of things makes my heart hurt for all the ones still stuck in the mills. WHY are such things still legal??
I see this all the time . Dogs used as breeding , never feel the love,/kindness of humans until the rescue groups get them. I've known so many over the years. Most won't let you touch them, without a lot of TLC . So sad. Btw, I've been a dog groomer for over 30 years.
We gave our rescue all the love we could in her last few months she had been over bred and definitely never knew a happy home .... Still have our other rescue american bulldog...we are her 5th owners we got her at a year old ... has loads of issues but we wouldn't change her for the world
Load More Replies...Had a rescue american bulldog who was used for breeding only had her 10 months she was 8 and riddled with cancer the worst the vet had seen she had surgery and lived the best 3 months of her life 💔 why are humans so cruel
Luca - Surrendered Because Her Owners Couldn't Cope With Her
she looks bueatiful, almost like she's from an advertisement or dog show
Collies. Have had two. They have so much energy and are so clever. And so loving. You need to keep them entertained. Was told by a trainer that they calm down after 18 months. YEH! RIGHT!
Mine's 4, still waiting for him to calm down! Wonderful dogs

Load More Replies...If your family dumped you, you would probably be sad too.
Load More Replies...Did they not realize how ridiculously expensive that dog is? They could have sold it to a reputable enthusiast for a butt ton of money.
Chucky - Surrendered After His First Owners Couldn't Cope With His Energy Levels
This is common- people don't know the energy levels or health requirements of a breed and thusly they are abandoned or surrendered.
Why are these people not doing proper research about that/any breed of dog before adopting/buying them? Why are they doing this to themselves? One of the many reasons dogs (and other pets) should not be an impulse buy! I don't mean to get soap boxy, I just don't understand
Load More Replies...I got my Jack Russell Terrorist as a pup and had to convince a buddy that getting one for his 85 year old mother was a bad idea.
I am laughing at the phrase Jack Russell Terrorist because of how accurate it is! I like JRT's and other terriers aesthetically, but not behaviorally. Speaking from 11 years' experience as a pet sitter. Boston Terriers are one of my favourite dog breeds, aesthetically, but I am aware that they, like most terriers, are stubborn AF, and am glad that I have not pet sat for one. A few Yorkies, a few JRT's, a completely deaf bull terrier (that was challenging!), but no Boston's. Yet.
Load More Replies...From the very second that I lay eye on this beautiful boy, I knew he was pure of heart.
Those people should better buy a plush pup to put on the couch besides them.
I hate people. Do your f*****g research before getting a dog. It isn't that hard.
You have to think carefully before taking an animal. Otherwise he will end up unhappy like him.
Queenie - Used As A Puppymill Machine And Kept In A Cage For 8 Years
My own sweet rescue chihuahua boy spent the first 6 years of his life shut in a dark and dirty shed, only brought out for stud duties. He has been with me for 4 years now and is very loved and very happy. 64410246_4...b9b303.jpg
I have one of these. I inherited him after my grandmother died. Very much a one person doggo, he took up with my daughter.
8 years! People suck. I hope she gets some love and TLC in her last years.
I will find them and get revenge for her… using the power of my ear splitting screeches!
This breaks my heart and disgusts me as a chihuahua breeder....I would NEVER treat my babies like this. I have an entire room in my house dedicated to my girls when they have their puppies that's warm safe and cleaned twice a day. None of my babies have ever seen a cage in their lives.
The people that kept her in a cage should be shot.
Bonsai - Part Of An Unwanted Litter Of Puppies
Pekingese are so fun. This breed was almost wiped out by the communist in China.
My daughter has an eight year old peke who was an "undesirable" puppy because of his leg colorations. She took the baby, and Gizmo is king of his household. I adore pekes.
Tyson - Unwanted Because He Was Too Energetic
He looks like my doggie! She was used for breeding and then abandoned or escaped. She definitely has loads of energy, though she's snoring on the sofa at the moment.
Looks like my old guy before his face went all white. He's 14 now and won't be around too much longer...
Eddie - Put Up For Adoption After The Family Who Bought Him Couldn't Cope With His Boisterous Behaviour
He's a beagle, how could they not understand he would be boisterous?????
SQUIRREL??!?!?!?! ZOOOOOOOOOMMMM--------->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Load More Replies...Another Hunting dog bought for being cute. Beagles used to be my favorite until I learned they like to bay...a lot.
I say lack of research by the former owner. Just wanted a dog. Didn't care what kind.
Hunter - Surrendered Because The Other Dog Kept Attacking Him
Then his name is Hunted. Sorry just a quick joke on a serious matter. I'm glad that Hunter is no longer being bullied by the other dogs. I hope he's in his forever home as an only child being spoiled and loved pieces ❤️
Yes! We had one when I was a child, called her Queenie! She was such a friendly, good girl!
Load More Replies...This dog looks like a complete and utter nut job and I love him! I want to give him snoot kisses! 💋💕
They kept the wrong dog! Or not, since they've obviously don't deserve such a sweet boy!
I disagree. It might be easier to find a home for him than for the other dog. Sucks for him but it might be best to have both in homes soon.
Load More Replies...Maddy - Rehomed After She Was No Longer Of Use To Her Breeder
She looks like a painted portrait of some kind of military general from the 1800s.
This is the best picture of a doggo I've seen in a long time! It looks like a power picture for a CEO.
This is heart wrenching!!! How could you do things like that to dogs..... the love in their eyes ...... sigh
Nova - Surrendered Because His Owner Could No Longer Care For Him
This one I will not judge because some elderly patients have dogs that they can no longer care for once medical issues kick in. It would be great if they could stay in the family.
We just adopted a full breed Pug. She was surrendered 2 weeks after having her puppies. She was still engorged when we fostered to adopt her.
The owner might have health issues or has gotten old enough that they need assisted living and can't take the dog with. It's also pretty hard to take a dog with you when you become homeless since most places won't take a pet.
Load More Replies...Brooklyn-Stella - Sold On Facebook After She Was No Longer Useful To Her Breeder
Who would do something like that that is just cruel!! and that's coming from a junior!!
I hate that people abandon their dogs after breeding them. Like just keep the dog. but this is coming from a freshman
Load More Replies...it's not uncommon for reputable breeders to find good loving homes for retired breeding dogs. A good breeder will only breed a dog when it's a certain age and for a limited number of litters. It's good for people who would like to adopt an adult dog in that breed instead of a puppy and if it's a reputable breeder the dog has a good history of regular health checkups and they know the dog's temperament so they can make a good match for a home. Obviously there are some very terrible or just meh breeders. I've considered adopting a retired breeding corgi because corgis are almost impossible to find as adult rescues anywhere remotely close to my state. Though I absolutely get why people would hate this idea.
Just look at her beautiful face! She looks so sweet & gentle. I hope she now has a home full of love that she so deserves.
Enzo - Left Behind When His Owners Emigrated
And Enzo would like to know what the owners have to say for themselves, thankyewverrahmuch!
taking a dog to another country takes anot of time money and energy, and many places they could have moved to dont allow dogs at all
Load More Replies...We have a Boston also. They are not for everyone but those who have patience and training to handle a Boston...they will have the most loyal, sensitive and intelligent companion.
Leila - Now In Her 7th Home (Please Read The Article For Her Story)

Stoffel - Unwanted By His Owners
How dare they! Boston's (I'm 90% sure that this is a Boston) are adorable. A handful, sure, but with the right training and patience (from the human/s) a lovely pet!
Boston terriers are my favoritest little fart factories.
Load More Replies...Boston Terriers are so cute. Why would you not want this adorable pupper? Some one are idiots
Not sure if this is a fat boston terrier or skinnier french bulldog, but I have a french bulldog and I think a lot of people really don't understand how high maintenance (aka expensive) they are to take care of. Human grade (expensive af) food, wiping out their wrinkles and paws every day, brushing their teeth, weekly baths, plus all the normal dog stuff, etc. Mine is also not lazy and would play ball 8 hours a day if we let him. I see so many frenchies so poorly taken care of because people really don't know what they are getting into.
Luca - Surrendered To A Shelter Because He Chased The Cat
It makes me so sad to see beautiful dogs like that get horrendous haircuts
It makes me so angry when people get pets without thinking about other animals! I am getting a dog with my two cats but they are going to have lots of play dates to see whether they get along, which I recommend anyone else to do too to prevent this awful scenario.
Not all dogs do that, owners should be more responsible before they adopt.
Load More Replies...Wait because it chased the cat? wtf? Why would you surrender it for that? It can be taught not to.
Sadly, not always that's why you should introduce the pets on 'playdates' before actually deciding to adopt in case of this.

I agree with one exception: When you can no longer provide a home your dog can be happy in. It can be medical or other, but sometimes circumstances do change and the dog ends up being stressed out non-stop. Then, as much as it hurts, it is our responsibility to find a better home for our pooches.

Before I get any hate mail, I would like to state that I never wanted to get a dog because I'm not a dog person, and I don't want to take a dog for walks in all types of weather and pick up after it. She was a very smart Labrador, and I trained her to walk beautifully on the leash, to sit, to wait and to lie down. I also had her house-trained and crate-trained. But my heart really wasn't in it and I wasn't happy that I was the only person looking after the dog after my husband begs to get one and promised to walk her etc. I found a lovely couple who were professional dog trainers for the blind; their son was losing his eyesight and they wanted to train a dog to be his assistant dog. She was in the right place with people who could give her everything that she needed and deserved. It broke my heart to take a dog that I knew I wouldn't want to keep, but I thought my (ex)husband would step up and he didn't
People buy dogs without the research and don't understand the personalities of these dogs. A working dog needs things to do. Not just sitting in your home or backyard and shame on the breeders for just selling their dogs to any idiot with money.
You're absolutely right here wish I could upvote you more. I'm a chihuahua breeder and I have a bit of a reputation of being very picky about selling my puppies because I won't sell just any one. I spend a lot of time talking to people like an interview. I ask a lot of questions. And I won't sell to anyone with children under 5. Chihuahuas are great when raised with older children who understand how fragile they are.
