People Claim These Tattoos Signal Major Red Flags On People, Here Are 40 Of The Worst Ones
InterviewFor thousands of years, humans have marked their bodies with permanent designs known as tattoos. They have varied from plain, sometimes elaborate, other times symbolic, but always personal, and these inkings have served as amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments and even forms of punishment.
No wonder people’s fascination with tattoos remains stronger than ever. While there’s still some stigma about them in our society, a more progressive approach to our bodies, identity, and self-expression is emerging.
At the same time, some people are slightly more skeptical towards body art. They even claim that particular designs, symbols, and body areas where a tattoo is placed can be read as a warning sign. “What sort of tattoo on someone is a major red flag for you?” someone asked on Ask Reddit, and we looked at what people had to say. Let us know if you agree or disagree with them in the comments!
We also reached out to Alex Alvarado, a tattoo artist at Santo Cuervo studio, and Adam, the studio manager at Vagabond Tattoo based in East London, who shared a couple of insights into tattoo art from the experts’ perspective.

The Confederate Flag is literally a red flag
There is absolutely nothing good about the Confederate flag. The people that fought under it thought that it was okay to own human beings. You are absolutely right. It is a symbol of hatred and fascism.
Load More Replies...No other nation on Earth allows the display of a flag used by rebels who waged war on their own countrymen and then lost. And if you asked the poor misguided souls who love this symbol they'll profess support for the US military, the targets of those who fought under this flag. They also defend it by saying it represents their "heritage". Dumbass, do you not realize Barak Obama's Presidency lasted longer than the Confederacy?
This is the flag of traitors, not just losers. They actually waged war against the United States of America, and the people who fly this flag just don't seem to understand that fact.
Not sure if you're aware, but this whole country was founded by white slave owning treasonists... just saying.
Load More Replies...Once when driving through a rural area of my home state, a house I passed had a Confederate flag, an American flag, and a Don't tread on me flag all raised high on poles together. Some of these "people" in this country are so dumb they don't even know what to believe in!
I'm from the south. Mississippi to be exact. I would never date anyone with this s**t tattooed on themselves. This is stupid, awful and just tells me that the last two brain cells they have are trying desperately to rub against each other to form coherent sentences. Easy pass
The AOC references is how we know Ms. M is a incel dudebro guzzling Mountain Dew.
Load More Replies...When I see anyone with the confederate flag I think... Warning: this person is a racist piece of uneducated trash.
The Confederacy lost the war and doesn't exist anymore. Let it go, and no, you're not gonna convince people that it's not racist and just a symbol of "Southern Pride.".
Don't buy any heritage BS. Its whole history in the 20th and 21st century is directly about racism. It wasn't even the flag of the CSA. It was resurrected in 1948 specifically as a symbol of support for segregation. And then it had a big leap in popularity to oppose the Civil Rights Movement in the '60s and '70s. It is about pride: "White Pride" and southern heritage: racism and (segregation in particular)
According to tattoo artist Alvarado, you can tell a lot about a person from their tattoos. “I’d venture to say you could even guess nationality based on what style of tattoos they have, but the most obvious answer to me would be how much they have (or haven’t) invested in their tattoos,” he said.
Alvarado argues that this isn’t only monetary investment but also in terms of research, time, and dedication. “Getting a good tattoo is sometimes a very multi-faceted process that could even include travelling to see a specific artist. Things like this can tell you how knowledgeable, patient and committed a tattooed person can be.”
Any kind of hate symbol/speech is going to be a no from me.
It's a racist and then turns part of its skin black to show you its a racist. Mf morons
I agree if it's a racist image. But what if, like you, it's that persons last name. Or something else and this picture is taken out of context. That's the same as judging someone by race, gender, age or any other distinction.
Load More Replies...How is simply having the word white tattooed on you racist for all we know that can be his last f*****g name or just simply the fact that he's proud that he's white doesn't make that your f*****g racist. Every other race out there is proud to be the race that they are
Maybe this is a reminder of the color of flag they need to show if they were ever confronted.
Maybe he just can't remember the name of the race he belongs to and jotted it down just to keep the info handy.
Load More Replies...I've been in some places where there's a lot of different people of different ethnicities and hands down the most racist people I've ever encountered are people of color 💯 facts!!!
So now just claiming to be white is hate speech? Do you not hear how racist you sound? What about those who tattoo "brown power" or "black power" on their body, would you consider that hate speech? This doesn't even say white power, it just says "white" in ironically black ink lol
*sigh* Do I really want to start a debate with you? Not really, but... Considering how especially the Nazis, but even before the white Europeans acted and thought that white skin made them superior to other skin-colors. That with dark skin comes a small brain and no sophistication, no culture and nothing remarkable. So Europeans (white) went all over the world and because they did have superior weapons, they murdered and destroyed and abducted and enslaved people with darker skin and rubbed out their culture. Not even talking about more modern, problematic behavior. In general, if someone says they are proud to be the color that has caused so much misery and harm in the world s highly suspicious towards at least toying with racist ideas. the difference between black power and white power is that Whites, especially in the US but kinda all over the world ALREADY have the power. Black Power says "we, with this color, want to have power!" while "White Power" says "we deserve all power"
Load More Replies...This picture is nothing more than a word. Where is the racism in the word "WHITE"?? It's in your ignorant mind!!!
Frankly, I only judge people for racist tattoos. I don't care otherwise nor do I care where people put their tattoos.
I do tend to judge people with bad tattoos but solely because it generally means a) you didn't care to do your research or b) you're a cheap f**k. But I try not to just for the few people out there that got scammed by someone saying they were something they weren't.
Why can you be proud of being gay, or black, or trans, or Hispanic, or an atheist or one of the 50 new genders but if you say you're proud to be white you're automatically a racist? THATS RACIST!!
F**k off! White people aren't persecuted and threatened with death in more than 50 countries only because they exist! They aren't systematically pushed out of society because of their skin color! They didn't have to fight over decades for basic rights! F**k! Off!
Load More Replies...Wow, there are a LOT of unapologetic racists in this comment stream, that's just scary.
Yeah, and it's pitiful how many other cowardly racists have upvoted their comments and agree with them. BoredPanda censors idiotic words like c**p and d**k yet they do absolutely nothing to get rid of the now constant racism and homophobia on this site-- it's freaking sad.
Load More Replies...If this person ever comes to their f*ing senses, at least this one looks like it could be hidden with a cover-up. I have hopes.
What that generally says to me is that they went to the penitentiary.
White Pride is a nazi hooligan group in my town. Imagine a group of bald, young men high on hatred and amphetamine. Most pathetic losers I’ve seen.
as someone whose family works in a tattoo parlor, dont trust any tattoo artist who would willing put this stuff on people
As a tatt artist I have to mildly disagree with your comment. I'm constantly inking things that go against my morals and values just because I ink it doesn't mean I agree or support it in any way but I also knew it was going to be part of the job when I started.
Load More Replies...How is this racist? I'm sure there are plenty of black, Asian and native people that have similar tattoos. I know for a fact that "native pride" is a very common phrase and tattoo choice.
Load More Replies...Wow the ignorance in all these damn comments no there is no issue with being proud of your race yes there is an issue when you use ss bolts it goes from being proud to being a dip s**t half these commenters don't know the difference between being in the Nazi camp and the kkk so should honestly keep the dumb a*s comments to themselves and for the record to the one that wrote about the swastika sadly the Nazi camp turned it into a symbol of hate but it was a pagan symbol for centuries and it wasn't a symbol of hate
And when it comes to the tattoo trends, Alvarado said that there are a multitude of them going on right now and it would depend on where you live, mostly.
“Custom lettering seems really popular at the moment. I’ve seen a lot of very delicate, very intricate Korean-style tattoos lately, and on the opposite end of that, there’s a lot of heavy blackouts going on as well, but it seems all styles seem to be flourishing and being taken to the next level all over the world.” He added that he is mainly a realism artist “and the art I see on social media nowadays usually leaves me in total awe!”
Childhood characters doing something unsavory. Like Winnie the Pooh in a dominatrix outfit. Decapitated Pikachu. Something like that.
THIS. I don’t need to see my favorite childhood characters in NSFW situations
Ask around for Lolla Bunny and how this comes sideways... I particularly don't support the "Furry cause", but taste is taste... Betty Boop and Jessica Rabbit were around for a while...
Load More Replies...Don't do that to my childhood friend! Pooh is too young and simple to know about that anyway!!
OMG HERE everyone take some drink it and splash it on your eyes! unsee-jooc...c9677.jpeg
"Only God can judge me".
This is often used to cover for their racism and/or criminal activities, "only doG can judge me".
Load More Replies...The ones that p**s me off are the family with 3 little kids dressed in rags but the parents are all dressed up with tattoos everywhere and on welfare.
LOL - Everyone who sees that tattoo is judging the daylights out of you.
I'm not a Christian and I don't believe in God, but I understand the concept and I don't see anything wrong with a person tattooing a mantra on themselves, if they feel that mantra applies to their identity, as long as it's not hate speech or bigotry. Judging someone by their tats is just the same as judging a book by its cover. You don't know what a person was going thru when they got their tats. So just mind ya bidness and move along.
Anything political or weed-related. It tells me that has become their identity, basically.
It is a picture of Nixon tattooed onto Roger Stone. If you don't know who Roger Stone is, it's important to look him up. One of the foremost destroyers of USA democracy.
Load More Replies...No need for the tattoo- just seeing Roger Stone cosplaying The Penguin was enough red flag for me.
Richard Nixon still amazes me. He was the elected president, yet seems to have had no detectable charisma. Roger Stone apparently disagrees, but I'm not seeing it.
The Viet Nam war might have had something to do with it. Election year '68, Tet-offensive cost thousands of lives, huge anti-war demonstrations in the US. Time for a different party after Kennedy and Johnson? Those were interesting times.
Load More Replies...That ends up looking like Jimmy Carr... Or was that the original intention?
See I disagree. Weed IS a lifestyle. I work at a medical weed factory. If you aren't in the lifestyle then you won't understand. Weed isn't my identity anymore than people obsessed with sports or anything like that. I've learned from weed that unless you actually experience and understand something I should just be quiet and not judge. I didn't start smoking weed until 4 years ago when I turned 30. I had such a negative view of everything weed and potheads and stuff. I've learned not to judge ANYTHING I know nothing about.
It's weird for a man to tattoo another man onto his body that he is not related to or in love with.
And when it comes to tattoos that seem to be out of fashion, Alvarado said that from what he can see, the '90s tribal style is definitely on its way out. “The majority of cover-ups we’ve done at my studio usually involve some sort of tribal that the client got ages ago when they were ‘cool’ but no longer reflects their taste and personality. But with trends being so cyclical, who knows, maybe tribal will come back in a big way soon!”
Baby’s faces, find it really unnerving, especially on the calf or top of arm. Why does it keep looking at me?
Adorable photograph of a sweet sleeping baby on the left. The love child of Gollum and Sloth on the right.
The only reason I'd understand it is if the child had died, then the most recent picture - I'd understand. But not if it's still a living child, it is as though you love the memory of who they once were, instead of who they are today. Cheesy as it is, then I'd prefer to tattoo their name on my body.
I have never seen a tattoo of someone's face come out looking like that person, regardless of the tattoo artist's talent. Going with the name is a better choice.
Load More Replies...I've seen maybe two in my whole life that didn't look like a rendering of the person as a Klingon.
Anything in a language they don’t speak/have a connection to
Yeah, big regret for me there. Being 19 and stupid, I would seriously like to get rid of it, totally screams whitetrash while at the beach now 😐
There are some amazing artists out there who specialize in cover ups.
Load More Replies...The only thing is how do you know if they have a connection to it? I don't speak German, but my grandparents did and their "moto" (for lack of a better term) was always spoken in German. If I were to tat it it would be because I'm connected to them... It means something because of them, not because I speak the language.
Ariana grande’s “seven rings” tattoo in Japanese comes to mind. She got it “fixed” to where it reads “Japanese BBQ Finger.”
That has to be my all time favourite translation fail as a professional linguist.
Load More Replies...I have one. It's small, *accurate*, and still relevant to me
How in the holy fck would you know if they speak it or not. Did you ask. Or are you just unnaturally scared of anything that doesn't make sense to you
I love that most end up not being g what they think it means. Hilarious.
I’ve read about people having Chinese or Japanese things that aren’t what the people think they mean. Very unwise.
Tends to be a more common trend with Asian languages, mostly due to mistranslation of Kanji characters.
Some of my favorite videos are of native speakers reading these tattoos.
Load More Replies...Why...I have 2 kanji symbols on my arm...1 is the year of the dog symbol, which I was born in. The other is the kanji symbol for cat, in honor of my cat who passed away. Yes, I did a ton of research to make sure they were correct.
Pictographic linguistic symbols are beautiful, artistic. It doesn't have to mean anything to anyone else (and really, who the f*ck cares), but to the person wearing the art, it may mean something, and it's really none of our business.
The number 88. It's used in the Aryan Brotherhood as an abbreviation for Hail Hitler (explanation: H is the 8th letter of the alphabet)
I was unaware of this and had an idea to incorporate 88 (Year I was born) into one I wanted. The artist was like yaaaaa I'm not doing that and that's when I was explained the meaning. Man I'm glad he said something!
Shout out for that tattoo artist, seems to be a good one.
Load More Replies...and now there are a bunch of proud boy and incel symbols going on, like the "okay" symbol with your fingers looking like WP for white power, "1776" for revolution and pepe the frog which was a meme that was taken over by extremists. "KeK" flags and symbols standing for Hitler, orange whistles standing for anti-lgbt hatred, and don't even get me started on the QANON ridiculousness. These days you have to do a google search just to make sure you aren't going to accidentally promote some kind of horrible message before you get a tattoo.
I still don't understand how so many ppl can fall for all of that QANON bs......the name itself sounds like some d.a. came up with it
Load More Replies...I worked with a guy with an 88 tattoo. He said it was from NASCAR (Dale Earnhardt Jr, I think). I told him that it means "Heil Hitler" to skinheads; he said he wasn't worried because nobody would know that.
oof. kinda common knowledge. At least common enough that many know to get the eff away from anyone with that tat if they're from a group a neon*zi might like to beat up
Load More Replies...Another little fact, the swastica was originally a symbol of good fortune. It's horrible how humans can bastardize stuff like that, image if he had used a four leaf clover as their symbol.
Load More Replies...It's also used by neo Nazis in Germany. It's forbid to use it on your number plate. And honestly as a German I think that's right.
I don't think it's forbidden on number plates, I'm pretty sure I've seen it. 🤔 And was hoping of course it refers to birth date. (For those who don't know, you get to chose your number plate, and birth dates are a common choice)
Load More Replies...Years ago, a co-worker (African American) & I (Jewish) went over to the employee smoking area, basically an area with a bench next to the parking lot. There was a really beautiful Harley Davidson parked there. But, then I began to notice things. Small chrome plates on the bike containing the iron cross, the SS logo, and the number 88. I realized what kind of person owned the bike. I explained to my co-worker what the symbols meant. Just then, the owner of the bike come around the corner. A huge hulking biker dude, bald head, massive beard. My co-worker, being kind of a big bad a*s dude himself, walked up to the guy and asked what the symbols were. I was nervous, to say the least. This big scary guy just says "Uh, they're just decoration", hops on his bike and rides away. Because these people are cowards when they are by themselves, even the big scary looking ones. And, yes, this story is true.
88 doesn't mean heil Hitler that came way later but it was racist. It actually came from the number of precepts David lane wrote. His 88 precepts on how white ppl should live their lives also contained the "14 words." I won't say them. But that is where the 1488 came from. Neo nazis co-opted the British skinhead (who are very anti racist) culture which had nothing to do with racism whatsoever. Just like the real Nazis they copted all kinds of benign imagery and turned it racist...
88 is also an angel sign for money, or abundance. I'm black and disregarded it's disrespectful meaning, for a better one.
Meanwhile, Adam, the studio manager at Vagabond Tattoo parlor, argues the opposite. He believes that tattoos don't really say anything. “There are so many different styles out there at the moment and it's so varied that you have people with different styles tattooed on them.” Having said that, Adam added that “one thing I would say is that if someone has a body suit or a large-scale piece, then they are a committed, dedicated person!”
A huge American flag. I'm sorry.
Not ur problem...worry about ur own self and not what others like......they have that right
Load More Replies...WTF! The judgement on this article is so f****d up. This dude could be a soldier that has fought for his country or even died so you guys can talk s**t like this on this website
You are right NoDak, I assumed the worst. Although I am not sure if a soldier can have identifying tattoos? Anyway, I was about to say that any flag tattoo seems wrong. But on the other hand, why are you not allowed to be proud of your country and love it.
Load More Replies...The body hair at the end of it makes it look like the flag was set on fire and is smoking.
Yeah. I was wondering if the placement was a message. It's in his armpit.
Load More Replies...It's one of the most popular tattoos people get. I get asked daily how much it would cost for one

Load More Replies...Despite the content, the artist did an amazing job! The shading, line work and the way they captured the rolls/waves in the flag
Showing exactly how much you're not a patriot by violating the US Flag Code.
Celebrity. Any kind
Wtf is wrong with people? Beautifully done. That artist is very talented. But why would you have this tattooed on you?
Seriously? That’s what you want on your body for the rest of your life?
Imagine having to explain that thing 20 years later, and then having to explain why you thought it was worth remembering in this fashion.
So should people start checking with you before they get tattoos to make sure that it's OK ? My God these people should be penalized For getting the tattoo they wanted these artists should be ashamed. Thank God you're here to pass judgment on everyone I know I feel safer having you around to sdon't to show me what's good and what's bad.
'Live, Laugh, Love'
That's already overused as a wall decoration, and she put it on her body 🤦🏿♂️
Live in the moment, Laugh as often as possible, and Love as much as you can. It's been overdone but still a beautiful message. 💗
My granddaughter, "How am I supposed to live, laugh and love in these conditions?"
When asked what kind of tattoos have been trending lately, Adam said it’s tribal tattoos that are having a comeback at the moment, but in a new form. “I've seen lots of biomechanical-esque tribal recently, so that may be a new trend.” Moreover, Adam said that “the 'fine line' style is probably the most popular but I don't think anything is the least fashionable right now,” when asked about tattoos which have gone out of style.
“Loyalty” The people I see with this tattoo, they usually don’t appear to be the loyal type
Literally no one who has ever, in the history of humans, gotten a word or symbol meaning "loyalty" anywhere on their body is actually loyal. Don't know why. Just one of those things that is what it is. Can't explain why it's provably true. It just is. Kind of like Karens having "Live Laugh Love" everywhere when they literally never do any of those things.
They literally went in and demanded loyalty from a stranger.
It almost comes across as a threat ie: if you aren’t loyal to me I’ll shank you.
Only 1 thing in this universe has known what absolutely true loyalty is. It's not God, but it's every betrayal. Betrayal is the only thing that has true loyalty paid to it's existence.
Bible/gospel quotes are an immediate no from me
That is in the old testament. That is more of a history book. The people who use the Old Testament to judge people are the worst. They make the Christians who live in the new testament look awful. In the old testament we are all sinners and terrible people. After Jesus arrived (New Testament) is what we should live by. I am so sorry to anyone who was hurt by a Christian who used the bible as a weapon against them.
Load More Replies...this isnt necessarily a bad thing. what if its a verse a dead loved one favoured, and they just want to keep it close to them? arent tattoos supposed to be meaningful like that?
My first tattoo was a Bible verse that I had done in memory of several people who have passed. I miss them.
I've said this before and I'll say again. I'm not a Christian and I don't believe in God, but if someone's uses a bible quote as a mantra they apply to their lives, and want to have a permanent reminder of the thing that helps motivate them to be their best self, there's nothing wrong with it. The only problems I have are hate speech and bigotry related. But the majority of these "red flag" tats, I see nothing wrong with. Just a bunch of bougie, salty, haters in the comments.
I'm not atheist, agnostic, any label. I just don't believe and don't wish to be included in any group with a religious opinion in any direction. But who cares, let people believe or find comfort/GOD forbid hope, In whatever they like.
Not believing puts you in the group you don't want to be a part of by default.. you're religious or you're not 😂

Why are you people so concerned/judgmental about how other people choose to live their lives? This entire post is so bizarre.
Yes. In Orthodox Judaism, someone with a tattoo cannot be buried in consecrated ground. Of course, the Orthodox also believe in the resurrection of the body, and so my grandfather faithfully collected all his nail clippings so he would have his complete body when the time came.
Ohhh so people can get LGBTQ tats and there celebrating themselves, but if someone gets bible quote tats there a red flag?
Sort: Exes names
Placement: Face
Even for my passed on relatives I’m not putting names. I’m doing a symbol/object that reminds me of them. A tiger lily for my grandpa who loved them, books for my grandma who was a teacher, a skull for my uncle who loved skulls. In future there’ll be a pen for my aunt who writes, a camera for her husband, a torch for my brother, a wolf for my other grandpa, a ball of yarn for his wife, and more.
I have my husband and children's names all over my back on a "family tree", I love it.
Idk that actually has some use to it especially if you end up in a trauma situation where you have no dog tags or any other identifying measures stating your blood type

However, Adam said they have been pretty consistent throughout the pandemic and post-pandemic. “I'd say once we came out of each lockdown was the busiest time period with people wanting to get a tattoo,” he added.

Tear drop under the eye
A teardrop under the eye, if just an outline, Usually means the wearer has suffered pain, or more likely caused pain, or served significant time, for their associates (gang). Perhaps 15 years. A filled- in solid teardrop Usually means the wearer has caused death for their associates (gang).
I thought it meant they made bad choices. I have seen it some quite young people

Correct. The original meaning of a fully filled in teardrop means that. While other teardrops mean other things. Nowadays many people get them just to get them.

And now that the summer heat is sizzling and everyone’s getting into the beach mood, more people than ever are willing to get themselves a piece of body art. “Summer is always peak tattoo season! As soon as you start showing more skin, then all you see is the empty space,” Adam told us. However, he added that it's probably the worst time to get a tattoo in terms of healing, but it's definitely their busiest time of the year.
Brand logos of any kind. If you like any corporation enough to get their logo tattooed on you, I’m guessing we have some major ideological differences.
So "Major ideological differences" is reason enough to put a list together, judging (mostly) innocent people for absolutely no reason? Yeah, mock the idiot racist tattoos all day long, but a lot of this list is just bullying people.
Like the subway guy who now gets free foot longs for life. Walking advertisment.
I'm only playing devil's advocate here. It's possible to use a logo as representation. The Miller witch is a tattoo my sister's and I have discussed, our last name was Miller and spirituality is something very prevalent in our family. So I'm only saying there may be a reason that isn't super trivial behind a logo. None of us have gotten it.
A friend of mine has a tattoo of a tractor brand. It is in remembrance of her father, a farmer who only used that brand of tractors. It does help that the brand is a deer so it doesn't look to obvious.
Yeah people get paid a lot of money to do this and it's pretty stupid.
My bestie has the NFL logo and it's awesome! (We're huge football fans so it makes sense). And the only tattoo my mom has ever wanted was a Green Bay "G". 🤷♀️
Comedy and tragedy masks. First three people I hooked up with had them in places you couldn’t see with clothes on.

Same, I have a pretty extensive theatre background, and putting them in places no one else can see with clothes on? I figured that just means they made good choices, since visible tattoos usually indicates the opposite.
Load More Replies...Clearly you have a type... That tattoo is a Latino gangbanger/prison symbol. "Laugh now, cry later". Or" live it up doing crazy dirt now and burn in hell for it later" is the actual meaning.

I totally get what you're saying and sometimes it's ridiculous and clearly gross, but with some it's honestly not even about the image--it's literally a style of tattoo and getting them-- usually a 40s style nurse or GI girl, etc-- is a symbol of a talented tattoo artist because they deal with a huge amount of shading and placement. The popular image of Rosie the Riveter is an example of a pinup that became popular with women but men really brought it to light. Sorry for the Ted Talk, lol.
Okay. I get that the style has a name but I doubt it includes having a woman sat astride a d**k shaped pile of ice cream with her finger licking something that is intended to resemble jazz. That's a far stretch from Rosie the Riveter. I couldn't be further it is. This tattoo is basic c**p. I'm guessing this person is a mysogynis. That would be a red flag for me.

Problem is western society (especially North America) believe womens breasts are evil.
Load More Replies...I think some people are misunderstanding. The issue is that men like that only see women as sexual objects who have tattoos of naked women.
Only exception (when I don't mind at all): on a 70-+-year old sailor. Different times, back then, and a hobby to kill time on board. But even the US Navy encouraged it's enlisted personnel to cover up naked women on tattoos, back in WW2. Now, on a much younger person who does not work on a ship, it seems sexist to me, indeed.
As a woman with 2 trad. Style pinups (fully exposed breasts) I got mine because I grew up ashamed of my body and finally realized its stupid to hide myself when i want to wear comfortable clothing that shows my figure, or shows a good bit of my breasts. I think we should all work on freeing the stigma of having breasts being out, as taboo, rather than dictating when, where and how we see them. I don't give a fu*k if it's on some dudes arm, it's a cartoon. Free the nip, free the body.
Load More Replies...Hmmmm....I don't know, I'm mixed on this one. My long time girlfriend loves the idea though, and likes sending me pictures she finds of the style I've talked about with her haha. I found in general, unless you have no personality or depth to your thought at all, tattoos rarely mean what they immediately look like. There's usually a lot of hidden meaning in them, that are only necessary for the owner of the tattoo to know. It's nobody else's business....
I knew a man who was in the military many years before. Had a tattoo of a nude woman. He'd put a bandaid on it when he went to church. I loved that. It was funny.
this one depends. If it's uniquely and well done, then maybe, if its just mega sexualized, then yea, red flag. Nudity does not always equal sexualization, it can be art.
Gotta disagree with this one. There is a fine line between filth and art. Pinup stuff has been around for ever.
my coworker married another coworker.. Prior to that wedding.. he asked her to prove to her how much she loved him. So she got a tattoo on her neck with his last name on it.--BIG artistic letters.
Now.. mind you.. this man is a douchebag and a half. and they have "issues" in their marriage.. that tattoo just proves how much self love she had for HERSELF.. which is absolutely 0.
Now before any of you comment let me tell you what she is like. She's very introverted and never speaks up. this guy controls what she eats, what she wears, and he has no shame in telling us to shut the eff up, if we stick up for her... and HR doesn't do anything about it.
This girl still sticks with him. When we ask her why.. she gets quiet and says.. she doesn't have a car and begs us not to get involved.
SO seeing their partner's name on a very clearly visible area while the partner does not have any tatz is a major red flag.
When a tattoo is done under these circumstances it's basically a brand of ownership. I won't judge anyone with name tattoos because you never know what that person is dealing with.
I daresay that you might have a fair idea of what they're dealing with.
Load More Replies...Introvert doesn't equal not being able to speak up for yourself or set boundaries. Please don't confuse someone who is introverted with someone who is an abuse victim unable to currently speak up for themselves. In an abuse situation the ability to speak up for yourself gets eroded due to deliberate behavior on the part of the abuser (ie controlling access to a car/money, controlling access to friends/family, physically or emotionally abusing someone so they are legit afraid to speak up because they fear either psychological, emotional, or physical pain.)
He brandmarks her. I guess it's a kind of declaring his "ownership" of her as an object. I hope I'm not right.
“Prior to that wedding.. he asked her to prove to her how much she loved him.” Agreeing to get married, in combination with behaving like someone who loves him, would’ve communicated that. It’s more like this guy was asking for a permanent monument to his own insecurities and anxieties.
This is clearly an abuse situation. Please don't blame survivors for being unable to escape. He's clearly controlling her in ways she feels unsafe resisting.

Abuse is sad and happens too often. Poor girl, I hope she finds her strength before she takes her life.
Omg... So.. You just stand around and watch? Are you scared of this guy? Like... Wow
They should... what? Threaten or assault him? Demand she leave the guy? Try to get in the middle of the relationship? As I understand it, you can't force an abuse victim to leave. You CAN let them know that they aren't alone and you care. Make sure they know they have other options. Then, yes, you wait and watch and hope.

Alcohol or weed tattoos.
Just bc it is a picture of an alcohol bottle, doesn't mean that the memory behind it is. Maybe it was their gran's favorite drink or something of the sort. It's actually quite beautiful.
Years ago, my wife and I got talking to a young couple sitting next to us at a ballgame and we remarked on their new matching tattoos that appeared to be a family crest. Nope. They were tats of the crest from a Jameson's Whiskey label.
There is nothing wrong with weed tattoos as long as they're done right 😣
That is their choice. Just as it is mine to color my hair or not. As long as its not offensive. The above is a work of art- lovely detail.
A “Punisher” tattoo. Especially if they’re in any sort of authority position.
Biggest red flag is if it's a cop. The original punisher comic had him going after corrupt police and politicians. Police have since tried to claim the symbol means "no mercy". It's a massive red flag that whoever has it has temper issues and a lack of self control that they see as a badge of honor. F**k those people.
In reality, that is exactly who the punisher is out to punish, but what do they know about reality?
Load More Replies...I know that some members of the military sometimes get the Punisher's skull tattooed on them. But that's the only instance (aside from comic book fans) who I know mostly get Punisher tattoos.

Marvel comics character, Frank Castle. Not really a superhero, unless you consider PTSD and a violent temper to be super-powers, but he is a 'good' guy, fighting against police and govt. corruption and avenging the murders of his family (in the Netflix show, at least).

Lips on the neck
That... sounds like some ... uh... I would guess... trailer-park-girl stuff... What I think of when I read that...
The first person I ever saw do lips on the neck was Tommy Lee when he was dating Prince's ex, Mayte Garcia. He had her lips tattooed on his neck. And I may be wrong, but I think Dave Navarro did it with Carmen Electra's lips?
"Look at that neck. The message is immediate the guy F's chicks I spent a lot of years making friends with cool artists So when they drew me tattoos I could truly feel important It's a 22 year old inside a cube of brick and mortar Got me questioning my morals in a corny pecking order" -Aesop Rock
Anything on the neck... And I do freak out whenever my husband threatens to do it.
I think its in new mexico or very south California near mexico a lip tattoo was used as a "hidden" gang sign. The gang, i dont remember the name, used to use the number 13 but kept getting arrest because of it so then they changed to lips cause the way its shape is a 13.
Why the down votes? This is actually a thing. The lips do subtly symbolize the number 13 associated with gangs. I worked in a juvenile prison. Not only did the kids tell me this but our Gang Investigator confirmed when I spoke to her about it. Down vote away since this is somehow offensive…

I was once friends with a girl who had ten tattoos, all of which were matching tattoos with other girl friends. She’s no longer friends with any of them. Two big red flags there- intense codependent friendships, many enemies/falling outs with past friends. She even tried to get me to do a matching tattoo with her once. No thanks.
I do understand that, but some probably find it a funny/nice reminder of a time they lived through.
One, maybe three friends. Not 10 bff, all exes now. That's a problem

It can actually be a very sweet gesture. BFF'S/ Ride or Die type of friends stick around. Make sure you know who you are getting a matching tattoo with before you make that kind of commitment.
Yeeah! I have a best friend whom I have known and been close to for 15 years..girl is pretty much my little sis. We have a local bar that is named after a flower, and it's become a customary thing for their full time employees to get that flower tattooed on them somewhere. Exactly. I have technically two quotes on me. One is "Rester Forte" which is "stay strong" in French which reminds that I can make it through anything and the other is "Spread Your Wings" which I got in my brothers, moms, and dads handwriting, and it's also the name of a Queen that really hits home.

Sarah, that's really lovely. It's a beautiful way to remember her.
Load More Replies...I'm going to disagree with this one. You don't have to like the quote, but you don't know what those words may mean to the person who has them. It may be those words were the mantra they used over and over again to talk themselves out of suicide, or other forms of self harm, to to get away from abuse.
So? I want to get a tattoo that says. "Even the darkest of nights brings a brighter day."

Load More Replies...Quotes can be quite beautiful and meaningful. Nothing to prove but to remember.
Or maybe just the OP is jumping to conclusions. There are many possible reasons why someone gets such a tattoo, and we may not know those reasons. For example, someone mentioned that some depressed people have inspirational quote tattoos because it helps them.
I don't see what's wrong with inspirational quotes. I have an entire half sleeve made of quotes, lyrics and poetry because they represent my life philosophy and values and I look down at them sometimes to remind myself of good things. Not for any other reason.
Mis-quote much? And I believe you just mis-quoted Martin Luther King Jr
Stupid baseless words like “Pay2play” or “Boss movezzzz”
Still I see also a sense of irony and capability to laugh yourself in this one.
My husband and I have matching wrist tattoos saying "Fireproof" and I love them. As in we "fireproof" our marriage with prayer and putting each other before everyone else.
I think the pic is a bad example. The word says flawless and is not spelled flawless. Indicating that the deeper meaning is that the person that wears the tattoo knows they are not flawless. Might just be me though.
That's exactly the point of the tattoo. More often than not, however, it's thought of as funny irony done in haste.

Name tattoos are generally distasteful. You really couldn’t think of a different way to honour your loved one? ETA if you want to honour someone, get a symbol for them or smth that you actually put some thought into. It’s just the effortless name tattoos that get to me
Most of these just boil down to tattoos people don't like, not that make you wary of someone.
Yes. Unfortunately so many people refuse to read, just look at pictures, and draw their own context from that.

I don't think this belongs on this list. Someone tattooing the name of someone they love and have a personal relationship with says nothing about them (negative or positive). How on Earth is this a red flag? I also dislike this implication that something has to be original to be meaningful.
I have a heart tattoo (one half a fishing hook and the other an antler) with the birth year and death year and in the heart my step-dad's catch-phrase 'how's fishin' I love the tat but I'm kind of sorry I have it on my clavicle. Ah well the best laid plans of mice and men
I have my granddaughter's first and middle name tattooed on my inner wrist. She is 4. Her favorite game is telling everybody "look (pointing at it) that's me!" And then dissolving into a fit of giggles... no regrets here!!! Proud granny of a giggly grand
Unless you had the loved one write their name and got it tattooed in their handwriting. IMO that's kind of sweet, but I agree that a symbol would be good as well
I literally left this as a comment in a previous post X-D. Exactly this.
I actually feel this one. I wanted to honor my late grandfather so I got a train with scenery from where we spread his ashes in the background. He loved anything with an engine, as he was an engineer for United Airlines and I remember he and my grandmother would get super excited whenever they saw a train.
If I see the Eureka stockade flag on someone I get a bit nervous.
Anything that’s trending. Trends DIE. It tells me that the person isn’t willing to put anything unique on their body & they just want to follow with what’s cool right now. For example people who get clocks, eyes, lions, etc.. are probably the same ones who would’ve gotten tribal tattoos back in the 90’s-00’s just because it was cool at the moment. I dont have any hate towards these tattoos by the way. They look nice.. its just people get them because its trending.. so to me that’s a red flag to permanently put something on yourself just because its trending at the moment. Also anything with your ex’s name.
Kind of reminds me of the ";" which I almost got myself for its meaning, however, if it weren't for the steady pictures of so many others, I would never think to use that symbol for saying "I could have ended it but didn't." I have other tattoo ideas that are more for myself that I'm happy to spend the money on rather than one thing that yes, could be applied to me, but something else would be more individual.
Om symbol- not hating because I imagine a lot of people have one, but I feel like the person is very clearly telling me not to hang out with them lol.
I’m not sure I understand the second half of this. Could someone explain how an ॐ says “don’t hang out with me?”

Any kind of emo/goth cartoon character. Like Spongebob or Patrick.
you don't remember the theme tune? "....who dwells in a catacomb under the sea? Spongebob Goth Pants, reclusive and moody and pallid is he....Spongebob Goth Pants, if the eerie and twisted gets you a clickin'........then put on some Bauhaus and dance like a chicken...."

my ex is 17 so he doesn’t actually have this tattoo but he genuinely wants to get a harry potter death eater tattoo edit: need to clarify it’s not HP that makes me cringe it’s the death eater specifically
Hi! I have a Death Eater tattoo. Got it when I was 21 (now I'm in my late 30s). I was a huge Harry Potter fan and have a love for villains of many genres. My dumbass didn't see it as racist, my dumbass saw it as a way to show folks my love for villains. It wasn't until maybe the last 2 years that folks started saying how it's racist and the equivalent of Nazi-ism. I still like my tattoo! But I hope it may explain at least my reasoning for getting it.
As a teenager who'd love a dark mark, I don't see it as racism at all! Rather it's racism around a fictional concept of blood purity, which does not exist in our world and therefore surely cannot be deemed racist? If I were to shift universes, then sure, it would be hated, but seeing as blood purity quite literally doesn't exist, I don't see how it can be racist in any way.
Load More Replies...No kidding, why would you want a tattoo of a racist fictional cult? Or the ones who gets Always (about Snape's love for Lilly), why? It's not an example of true love, he loved her she didn't love him. And it was honestly kind of creepy how he still wanted to be with her years later, even after she rejected him.
Mostly cause I just think the symbol is cool (not OP's ex, just someone who also wants a Death Eater tattoo). It looks absolutely awesome and I love it.
Load More Replies...I have the hallows symbol on the outside of one of my ankles and I'd like to get the dark mark on the inside to show the good and bad, but I can understand why some people would link it to racism
When I went to the midnight release of the final book, someone got the DE tattoo in the mall that day.
Clock tattoos. Especially if it comes paired with roses or a lion. It a very specific tattoo but the people who get them are always so rude.
I knew a girl whose initials were VW and she had a Volkswagen logo tattoo. She was obsessed with their cars too; she didn't just get the tat because of her initials.
I knew someone who's last name was Campbell. He got a can of Campbell's soup tattoo. I think it's clever.
Tattoos of anime characters. I watch anime from time to time, I’ve seen so many. I read a ton of manga as well. I get if it’s a small tattoo referencing an anime, but big tattoos of anime characters are red flags.
Red flags for what exactly? Their love of a show? Man, this list is judgy.
Some of these are real red flags, like the racist ones, but a lot of them just feel like they have an idea of what a good tattoo is and if it's not that it's a red flag.
Load More Replies...I have to disagree here. I have a lovely friend named Hiro who got an amazing tattoo of all of his favourite Marvel and anime heroes to commemorate becoming a citizen of the UK and also the many goals they achieved. It was a tattoo that has a wonderful and very deep meaning to them and is gorgeously done.
I was thinking of getting a custom Yin Yang with both regular and Alolan Ninetails.
Load More Replies...I don't agree with this one. I remember casually dating a girl who said she wouldn't date a guy who likes anime. Lots of people unfortunately have some negative preconceived notion about it. Maybe they've seen Hentai and think it's all like that or something.
Hentai tattoos can be awesome if you have a good artist lol.
Load More Replies...I don't see how having a anime character as a tattoo is a red flag
My artist specialises in anime and geek tattoos. I have to disagree with you on this one. I have Zuko from avatar (I know it's not an anime, please don't kill me) on my calf and my husband has Naruto on his leg. Not quite sure why these would be a red flag
Zuko is cool, and Avatar does have an anime vibe to it, so you are cool.

this seems to be an unpopular one and may just be from personal experience but full or half sleeves of one particular fandom/media. Never met someone who commits that hard to harry potter and isn’t a bit off somewhere else
Autistics have special interests, so I can totally see someone having a gaming sleeve (or biology sleeve, or music, etc.)
Anything tribal on a neon white man
So you get to decide whether the “white man” has tribal ancestry or not? There are quite a few white passing people from all ancestries. Every ethnicity comes from some kind of tribal background. Are you aware of each tribal tattoo’s inspiration?
I’m pretty sure every chad that the exact same shoulder tribal tattoo in the late 90s-early 00’s were not part of the same “tribe”
Nightmare before Christmas tattoo because you know their going to be very annoying.
Whatever. I'm still getting my NMBC/Wizard of Oz pin up style mashup. Judge me however you see fit but it's happening.
BITE ME! I'm going to be damn annoying because it's an awesome movie and I decided I was going to show my obsession with it with pretty art on my legs!
Get outta here! I love meeting people with Tim Burton tats in general! They're a part of my life and story, and mean a lot to people!!
My mum and dad have Jack & Zero because while she's not a fan of Sally ,she adores Zero
Actually I would agree with the tattoo being a red flag. The film is brilliant, the people that commit it to ink on their body, in my experience, tend to be a little unhinged. Good film, dodgy people.
I've met several people over the years with some type of NBC tatt. Usually great people.
They're (learn the difference between their there and they're ffs people)
Those semi-colon tattoos. Met, maybe half a dozen men and women with one. All bats**t, and unapologetic entitled about it...
I know several people with a semi colon tattoo, for them it's a reminder of how far they've come and that they were able to beat their demons.
Semi-colon tattoos represent a suicide attempt. A semicolon, grammatically, is used in a sentence where the sentence could end (a period) with your point clearly made but continues (a comma), adding more context to the topic. This is a correlation to one almost ending their life but continuing onward. Most importantly, it's a reminder to the individual to keep it going; embrace the comma.
Maybe im wrong but don’t semi colon tattoos represent overcoming bad times and mental health?
Yes, they do. They represent a time where you could have ended your life, your story, but you chose to keep writing instead.
Load More Replies...What a horribly nasty and judgemental comment. I hope that this person know the meaning behind the semi-colon tattoo. They often represent that a person has struggled with wanting to take their lives and is now working hard to improve mental health and their life.
It means 'my story is not over' and a lot of people that have overcome suicide or heavy life issues like such wear that with pride. It's sad that you've met folks that seem to still be having issues with the tattoo but to judge it is a bit harsh.
If I ever get a tattoo, it would probably be a semi-colon on my left ankle. Because I've been through a time where I woke up every day miserable because I didn't die, where I couldn't look at a knife without thinking of where to cut for the most lethal wound, couldn't wear cloth belts because I couldn't stop thinking of where to hang them to, and avoided train tracks because all I wanted to do was wait for a train to pass while I was on them. And now I'm better, and the semi colon would represent that. I could have died. I could have ended my story. But I kept writing.
I can relate to that way too well. Not anymore, thank God, but about 17 years ago I was in that place. I still can have flashbacks if I see nooses or other imagery, and have trouble seeing handguns irl for that reason too (which sucks cause I enjoy shooting targets with rifles with my family but can't go to the handgun range). Thankfully I'm in a MUCH better place even with the ptsd moments. I'm glad you're in a better place too! ❤️
Load More Replies...Isn’t this some sort of mental heath symbolism? Again, I’m confused at the generalization with this one.
This one is a horrible tattoo to have an issue with. It symbolizes survival, and is an unspoken kinship among other survivors.
I have a semicolon tattoo on my inner wrist, above my watch strap. Every time I look at my watch it reminds me that my story continues, and that I'm still here. So f*** you to the person who wrote this original comment.
This is the best answer. You do you with the tattoos on your body.

Load More Replies...I know quite a few that raise red flags from different regions, though these are more criminal than red flags. Clowns in Brazil mean you're a Cop K I L L E R (spacing because of possible BP censoring), Epaulettes in Russia mean you are a high ranking member of the Russian mafia, Roman Numeral 13 is tied to Latino Gangs, full traditional Japanese backpieces are tied pretty heavily to the Yakuza in Japan, etc. Aside from the ones with hateful natures, USA flags, getting someone else's name, or something in a language you don't understand, most of the ones on this list seem more like bad personal experiences from the posters.
I have tattoos that are markers for times in my life, they are mine, I have been through some rough times and I’m not ashamed of those times, my tattoos are there as both reminders of where I’ve been but also the things I love. Judge me in whatever way you wish but all that does is speak of who you are, it says nothing about me.
Some of these people should maybe look in the mirror and maybe the problem isn't the tattooed person after all...
As long as you don't have a nazi symbol or confederate white pride s**t on you, then I don't give a damn what tattoo's you have, this list is so f*****g judgy. jeez...
Very few on this list that I see as a red flag. Most are just "I don't like"
I can't see myself having tattoos, today I like this thing, tomorrow I don't, less headache.
Same. My rule is that if I decide I want a tattoo I have to wait a year. If I still want it, then I'll get it. I have no tattoos.
Load More Replies...I met this woman at a party once who had a lot of tattoos which she told me about when I took an interest. One of them was a tattoo of a fish, which she explained with major eye-rolls was a matching one she'd gotten with some girl she had a fling with while holidaying overseas. In a fit of romance they got matching tattoos of a fish and a bird. Because, you know, they love each other but they're from two different worlds. By the time I met her she was 100% over the whole thing and said it was a really stupid thing to do.
