Bored Panda got in touch with Suzanne Degges-White, who told us about altruism, the Golden Rule, and that people are kind to each other due to their family values, spiritual beliefs, and biology. Suzanne is a Licensed Counselor, Professor, and Chair at the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University, and you'll find our full interview with her as you scroll down.

This is what should make headline news. Not the constant coverage of the wrongs we all see in society.. :)

Suzanne, from Northern Illinois University, explained to Bored Panda that there are several reasons why we are kind to other people. "Many of us are raised to believe it is the 'right thing to do.' Basically, all spiritual belief systems have a version of the 'Golden Rule, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,'" she said, and most of you reading this will probably agree that you've heard of the Golden Rule in some shape or form before.

"We also do good turns because we know that one day we may be in need of a little 'generosity from the universe,' so it's like putting 'money' into a karma account," she said. However, there's a biological basis for altruism as well.

"Lastly, humans are wired so that when we do something kind for another, we feel good about ourselves and neurotransmitters like endorphins and oxytocin have been shown to get a boost when we do something good for another. It is through cooperation that society functions, so the survival of the human race depends on being willing to help others. Family values, spiritual beliefs, and biology all play a part in this motivation," Suzanne stressed that there are complex reasons why someone might do nice things.

"Many of us take pride in being of service to others as it is culturally valued and we want to hold significance in our worlds. So when we do good deeds, we show others our willingness to help those in distress/need; we live out faith-based encouragement to treat others the way we would like to be treated, we uphold family values, and our brains get a positive jolt of happiness when we help others," Suzanne told Bored Panda.

As a cat owner, this brought tears to my eyes. My fur baby is only six months old and I don't want to imagine the end of her life, but I know I would want her to be happy, safe, and loved as she passed. The woman who did this is a true hero. Not all heroes wear capes <3

For many years I provided hospice care to senior animals. It was not sad, in my opinion, I was more upset fostering and having to give animals I loved to a new family. For the "un-adoptables" ... I was able to love and pamper them, and ease them on their journey. We will all someday lose our beloved companions...saying goodbye is the price you pay for the love you get.

When I worked at the shelter originally I took home kittens to foster, then moved on to patients who needed extra care, then my place became a hospice for the elderly cats. Most rewarding part of my thirty years there. All tolled, there were 286 little guys and gals that came to Casa de Val.

We adopted an elderly dog to be his “retirement home”. His previous owners turned him into the shelter because he needed knee surgery and a tumor removed but didn’t want to pay for it at his age. 3 surgeries later he’s alive and well and I can’t imagine our lives without him.

I would do this too but it’s costs around $300-400 to buy a cat from the RSPCA here in Australia. Add to this necessary vet bills and, sadly, euthanasia, in the not too distant future, and it’s just not affordable.

This is exactly why i wanna start a senior animal hospice. I volunteer in shelters & do TNR for feral cats in New Orleans & I see so many beautiful animals put to sleep because of overpopulation, disease, special needs, people dropping off their lifelong pets who have cancer & they don't wanna deal with it... etc. etc. & it breaks my heart. I foster as much as I can but New Orleans has a real epidemic of animals in need. There ain't enough people to help foster... I've taken in a few senior animals but my house is NOT set up for them. Lots of stairs.. no way of getting outside without carrying them down 13 steps.. I'm moving soon & the #1 thing on my list is a ranch house, huge yard & as many bedrooms as possible so I can take in animals who may not be good with cats (as I have too many.. like I said, I try to save as many as I can.. so I tend to adopt the "a*****e" cats who are going to be put down for this reason. They're usually never assholes. They're just scared

    Creature Cargeaux

But I wish more ppl would do this. It is a huge problem in shelters. It's always the oldest & sickest who get put down first & it's just not fair. They lived their whole lives just to be put down prematurely all because of overcrowding? They don't even get to die in the hands of someone who loves them.. they don't get cremated & "live" in a home after... it's just so sad. So please, if you are someone who can handle this & you have the room & means to do this.. please think about it. You have NO IDEA how much of a difference you'd make. Not just in the animals live.. but to ppl like me who are so sick of seeing senior animals put down & not being able to do anything about it. Or overextending ourselves because we just can't look away. So please think about it.

I recently read a similar story where an elderly woman routinely fostered cats with a terminal diagnosis, saying she knew how it felt to be sick and alone. The strength of that woman is humbling, caring for 4-5 cats a year, giving them the love they deserved, knowing she would lose each one. A true angel of mercy.

A friend of mine is in early retirement for health reasons. He is in his 50's, lives alone and has made it a habi, to adopt the oldest animals from the local shelter... so they can spend their "last days" in a real home. He says, there is something "satisfying and also comforting" about it. However, he once adopted a parrot that wasn't old, but very sick. The vet gave her(the parrot) 6 months at most... that was 8 years ago🤔😅.

Browsing BP tonight while sitting up with my 19 yr old kitty who’s been a bit poorly today, vet says he’s got an upset tummy and to make sure he’s hydrated and warm. He doesn’t like upstairs so I’ve made a camp bed in the sitting room and we’re having cuddles, he’s definitely warm and cozy.

Founded all the way back in 2013, when life seemed a lot simpler than it does nowadays, the ‘Humans Being Bros’ subreddit has since then grown by leaps and bounds. And it doesn’t look like it plans on slowing down any time soon (unless someone happens to unplug the internet).

Unsurprisingly, the community is entirely focused on folks being excellent to each other and posting high-quality, genuine content. The moderators stress that there’s to be no hate speech and no “slap fights. Meanwhile, there’s also zero tolerance for politics, misinformation, and staged submissions. Oh, and if you’re here for memes, you won’t find any—there are other subreddits for that.

The instinct for being kind to others is hard-wired into us, psychotherapist Silva Neves explained to Bored Panda earlier. He told us that our brains reward us for being social and altruistic. At the same time, however, we also have a selfish side that’s focused on survival and hoarding resources.

Such a small thing, but makes all the difference in the world to be beside someone.

    View more comments

Our desire to help others is in constant conflict with our inner wish to act in such a way as to protect ourselves. In short, people are constantly struggling between two different lines of action they’d like to pursue. We’re always on the lookout for how our kindness might backfire on us, according to Silva. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t wonderful benefits that come with being nice to others.

“Being kind is good for us because it gives us a sense of purpose, it raises our self-esteem, and it releases feel-good brain chemicals,” the psychotherapist told us. “It [kindness] is also good for others, obviously. So kindness is actually something that we, humans, are naturally driven to be.”

“Small daily actions one at a time can help us to make altruism a lifetime habit. You could start out small by deciding you are going to smile at everyone you meet or pay three people a compliment today,” Vanessa explained that kindness is something that can be learned, one wholesome action at a time.

"You can give money to charity, donate to a food bank, or volunteer your time over Christmas. You can leave a food package or a note for an elderly neighbor. All of these actions help others and boost your own happiness and if we are happier, research shows we are even more likely to help others,” she listed some of the ways that people can help others.

"Maybe at first, you start out doing things to help others only to get attention and praise, but you will find that doing things for others helps you feel good and when you see people’s responses. Once you see the difference you can make in the world and to your own happiness and altruism can grow naturally," she said that when people experience kindness, they are more likely to be kind themselves. At the same time, kindness can be a way of forming strong social bonds and increasing the likelihood of getting help when we need it most.

"There’s an important point too here for people on the receiving end of kindness. If they can, it’s, of course, great to say thank you and add the positive impact it has for you e.g., 'Thank you, It’s great to know that someone cares.' That can really boost the glow for the giver and encourage them to give more," she pointed out that when someone vocalizes how grateful they are, this helps cement others’ altruistic habits.

It makes me really sad that people use religion to spread hate in the world. Like I don’t care what you say, but if your using the “your not a real Christian” or whatever, it shows a lot more about how much you know about your religion than I do. Every bible I have ever read has different values, but love and kindness is at the core of all of them, and if you use your religion to hate, you are everything but a true (Christian, Muslim, catholic, Protestant, etc.)

Wow! That must've been a fantastic thing to get back. I took two classes in college taught by the same professor (also a captain in the local PD.) I had to write essays for both. I was taking courses to be a forensic anthropologist at the time so I wrote the essays in relation to my studies. My proudest moments were when the professor came to me and said "These were awesome! Do you mind if I post them at the precinct so the other officers can read them?" Heck ya you can post them!!

He surprised his partner on her birthday. The RV then had an issue with a bearing going out on the rear wheels. He found a mechanic that would come out to fix it...I offered to pay. Mechanic only needed money for the part and donated his time. They are now mobile and able to get away from the dangerous areas of town where the drug addicts hang out. But they don't leave completely because he is trying to help out as many homeless people as he can to survive on the street. I will help him anyway I can to achieve this, buying tents and sleeping bags for anyone that is newly homeless. I don't care what put them there...I just don't want anyone dying from no one caring.

I think if more countries pulled a Sweden and sent out text alerts when your donated blood is used, more people would donate. Humans love being helpful and useful, but not everyone finds it easy to be selfless. Sometimes we need to hear "hey that thing you did helped someone".

Their has been studies showing greiving for a pet can actually be more intense than grieving for a loved one. They depend on you for everything and you work your life around them with walks for dogs etc. So you aren't only grieving the loss but the loss of being needed and routine.

Everyone needs mental health days. They should be a required benefit of any company. I know that people have vacation days, but those should be spent with family having fun. I'm talking about days where you can just decompress...by yourself or with your bff if necessary. Sometimes we can't control when we need a break.

I cannot tell you how fast I go through umbrellas for this reason. Costco sells them in a three pack. I always use the largest one because it's a golf umbrella which doubles as a cane for me. The rest, I give away to anyone who needs one.
