40 Times People Had No Idea What They Were Looking At, But The Internet Knew What It Was Right Away
InterviewAll things have a purpose and function. However, some objects are so peculiar, so strange, and so weird that it takes amateur detectives and internet occultists to decipher their meaning. The ‘What Is This Thing’ subreddit is a treasure trove of everyday artifacts whose purpose was lost to the world… until Reddit’s resident Sherlock Holmeses took a look at them and explained exactly what people were looking at.
We’ve collected some of the best examples of odd things, so scroll down, have a look, have a read, and upvote your faves. Let us know in the comments if you learned something new and share the most obscure objects with your pals to test their knowledge.
Be sure to read on for Bored Panda’s interview with one of the subreddit’s moderators. And when you’re done with this list and if you’re still hungry for weird things whose purpose is unclear, then be sure to have a look through our previous posts about strange objects right here, here, as well as here.

What Is This Thing In My Classroom? Makes Subtle Fan-Like Sounds And Changes Colour On Top
Answer: AV1 is a personal avatar for children suffering from long-term illness, helping them to continue their education and maintain the normality of daily life despite no longer being able to access mainstream education. Through an app, the user can remotely log into the class from their home or hospital. Looking through the robots eyes, the child can watch the lesson, through the robot’s ears they can hear greetings from their friends and they can speak through the robot to interact with the rest of the class.
why wasn't the class informed about their additional classmate tho?
Most likely because the child isn't ready to be acknowledged yet. There is a certain acclimation process that would need to take place. Besides, if you told a class full of kids that the robot was another child everyone is going to want to be friends with or ask it questions. What's meant to not overwhelm the child could do exactly that, which would make the entire program pointless. It could take months or never before the child is more ready for more integration like actually admitting they're there.
Load More Replies...... or it's your school head spying on you. If it's "in your classroom", it's strange you don't know what pupil it would belong to (even in shared classroom). In the EU you definitely have to know --- you know, data protection, all you say in class is now heard outside so you need to know by whom so you don't "spill the beans".
What Are These For In An Outdoor Area Of A Hospital?
Answer: These are emergency showers. An affected person (chemical spills, laboratory mishaps, etc) will pull the level on the top and tepid water (OSHA defined between 60F and 100F) will douse the affected from the shower head (above) and boot sprayer (below). The duration of these showers is required to be 15 full minutes at approximately 20 PSI.
Source: I design these systems.
Yes, but I also want the designer to let us know why in every laboratory I've ever worked in there were no drains below these. Basically if you need to use it you should prepare to ruin the entire building. There has to be some reason not to have a drain? Expense? Upkeep too difficult? No drain able to keep up with water coming out? Please I must know?!?! Lol.
Load More Replies...At my old p.o.s. middle and high schools in backwards Mobile, AL, we NEVER had anything like this for emergencies. The water spigots built into the chemistry desks weren't even hooked up to water. I hated those schools. They were so awful. No air conditioning anywhere, not even a ceiling fan or oscillating desk fan in any classroom, the floor tiles popping up everywhere, old asbestos ceiling tiles falling down, there wasn't even a smoke alarm. Don't even THINK about a carbon monoxide alarm. Just damn awful! Yeah, school in the 80's SUCKED. Thank god now we have OSHA involved, but my old school is still open to students and still has not renovated. Just terrible. Mobile, AL county schools SUCK!
IKEA Coffee Mug, What Is The Thing At The Bottom?
Answer: So water doesn't stay on the bottom if you put the mug in the dishwasher and stops wet mugs suctioning themselves to coasters.
Pretty clever design actually.
Restaurants have been making glasses like these for a very long time. Fun to ask people if they know what it’s for at dinner out.
Load More Replies...Why is this not industry standard?! I don't own a mug with this little dip in the bottom and I last bought mugs in December!
Looks like ceramic. The notch is also made to allow air underneath the dish to bake evenly in a kiln (pottery oven). If that wasn’t there, it could suction, or the glaze could melt and stick to the kiln, and you’d have to break the dish to remove it.
For a second I thought it would be a defected piece until I saw the explanation. Smart indeed.
Why isn't this industry standard? I don't own a single mug with this dip in the base, and I last purchased mugs in December!
According to one of the subreddit’s moderators, there are several reasons why people become amateur detectives online and help others figure out what obscure objects are. The first reason is that interesting items show up and some folks can’t help but get involved. There’s also the “thrill of the chase”—people want to show off their great search skills.
“Many [people] have unique and obscure knowledge and they like to use it. Get enough of them together and they cover most things,” the moderator told Bored Panda.
The mod revealed that it’s very rare for a thing to get posted and for nobody to know what it is. They estimate that under 10 percent of ‘cases’ don’t get solved on the subreddit. “A majority of things are solved within 15 minutes of posting,” the mod added. With over 1.5 million members in the community, it's no wonder that mysteries get solved so quickly.

Answer: a practice gravestone scrap. Someone who carved gravestones would practice engraving lettering and drawings on this broken piece of stone.
It does look cool. And quite small, as it is resting on a piece of paper towel. I would polish it up and display it on a small easel like one displays pictures on a table. Or hanging in a shadow box.
Load More Replies...I love it when people find 'Practice' stuff, because so much of it was lost or thrown away. It find this kind of thing fascinating. Goes to show everyone had to practice doing something to get it down.
Looks like the oldest ouija board ever made, I'd get out of there if I were you.
It's the first marker from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Richard's Shield)
A practice piece? I don't buy that, the etching goes off the edge, so it appears that it is a piece of a larger slab. Most artists, or engravers I know don't take the time, effort or expense of doing this, they are skilled enough they lay the pattern out using pencil or chaulk.
This is over a hundred years old. They did take the time and patience to do it then. We are lazy now. And, yes, it was part of a larger stone. A practice stone.

Answer: Fabulous antique early Victorian chatelaine aide memoir from mid 1800s. Made of sheets of bone, it would have hung on a lady's chatalaine chain or been kept securely in her pocket and she would have used it to make note and appointments for the week to come. It has 6 pages for the days Monday to Saturday, of course a lady would never have made appointments on a Sunday
You can sell your Ivory if you can prove that it was purchased before 1990. This clearly is from the Victorian era..so yeah, that is legal to sell. What a cool discovery. I want to know how she made notes on them..
I just looked it up. They used a pencil, and it was wiped off with a cloth at the end of the week. Stubborn marks could be polished off with a drop of brass cleaner.
Load More Replies...It has also been used as « carnet de bal » in France - dancing reservation order
Bone is NOT ivory - the two are entirely diffierent. Bone is from the skeleton. Ivory is from the teeth or tusks. These items were made from bone.
Bring it to an antique dealer to see what it's worth. Ya never know.
Water Flows From A Culvert Beneath A Trail Into This Circular Pool, Then Continues On Into The Woods. What's The Pool's Purpose?
Answer: Settling pond for erosion control and improving the downstream water for happier fish
Smart. Always good to have happy fish. Wouldn't have to summon aquaman to deal with angry fish.
I live by the adage 'Nature doesn't make straight lines'. Usually if I see something that's too straight or to perfect of a circle I auto-assume its man made.
If you lived in the woods that wood make it easier for getting water instead of trying to get it from the little stream..

Grainy-Like Things? They Appear Inside And On My Closet, And Reappear Whenever I Clean Them. What Are These?
Answer: Termite poop.
most of the aswers are super interesting and fascinating.. and then this... yeah well sh*t :D

Load More Replies...It’s not just the modern world that is full of mysteries: the further back into history we go, the more secretive things get because the purpose of some things has become lost in the fog of time. One of the most cliched and well-known examples of this is Stonehenge.
We all have our personal theories as to what it was used for (burial site, cosmic map, astronomical calendar, druidic circle, UFO landing site, etc.), but the real answer still eludes us. Researchers are still scratching their heads how the stones that weigh around 8,000 pounds (3,629 kilograms) were transported more than 200 miles (322 kilometers) to the place where Stonehenge still stands.
My Boss Just Got Married, And Due To A Combination Of Indian Tradition And Him Being A Bro, He Brought Us These Little Snackboxes. He Left Before I Could Ask Him Much About Them. What Are They Called And What Are They Made Out Of?
Answer: The white block to the left is made with cashew nuts and sugar : It is called kaju barfi. The yellow block looks like it is mango flavored barfi. The circular one looks like dried fig with nuts stuffed in it. The shiny ones have edible silver foil and are also made from almonds, cashews and pistachio nuts. They are all made with clarified butter and are delicious desserts.

Mini Harpoon Thing Found When Changing Bedding In A Hospital Room
Answer: Patient had been tased. It's a taser dart.
Wait, tazers have harpoons??? That makes it so much scarier
They work by shooting harpoons into the target and conducting an electrical current which becomes a closed circuit being conducted through the target. In short, they run electricity through your body via the harpoons.

Something else that has captured the imaginations of many individuals is a series of carvings in Peru made by the Nazca tribe. Nobody knows why exactly the Nazcas made these drawings of animals, plants, insects, and other things.
But two things are for sure: they are huge and they can be seen from the sky. But their true purpose is still shrouded in mystery. Perhaps, one day, we’ll figure out the answers to the secrets of the Nazcas, as well as solve the mysteries of Stonehenge.
Found On Guam In Shallow Water. 3-Meter Diameter Disk. Top Looks Like Polyester In A Honeycomb Shape That Is Fiber Glassed To Flimsy Aluminum Disk. I'm Stumped On This One. Never Seen Anything Like It. What Is This Thing?
Answer: There was recently a Chinese Long March 3B rocket launch that failed, and the rocket and its payload was seen reentering the atmosphere near Guam
I sure hope they didn't touch it. The Long March 3B uses UDMH (unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine) for fuel, which is highly toxic. (Though many US spacecraft use it too, including the Space Shuttle.)
Was there any warning about the rocket parts falling? It's almost a miracle no living creature got hit by this.
True, since a UFO is just an unidentified flying object (except it isn't flying any longer)

Saw This In A Forest In Germany. What Is This Thing?
Answer: It's a fridge, or a old time cold room. Basically a room covered with dirt for insulation
They have these in the UK- in the winter ice from a pond or lake is put inside and this keeps food chilled through summer.
We call 'em Root Cellars where I'm at. people still use them and make them. Course ours double as storm shelters sometimes too.
Looks like it's from the Netflix TV show "Dark". (Highly recommended, BTW.)
I promise you there is a time machine of sorts in there somewhere.
Load More Replies...This reminds me of the Bras Pitt movie Inglorious Bastards.
Load More Replies...It's a root cellar, used for storing root vegetables like beet, turnips, or potatoes, also other stuff that needs to be kept cool. It is a hole in the ground, with steps leading down into it, and roofed over, covered with turf for insulation. Large pieces of ice are cut from frozen lakes & rivers in winter, enough to last the whole summer. I first read about them in a childrens' novel called The Root Cellar, by Janet Lunn, and also saw an actual one on an estate in the Netherlands.

Answer: For doing surgery on the cow
Smaller ones exist for other livestock. For small sheep, that's how some of them have their hooves trimmed - they come up the run, into the machine, get flipped and manicured (and usually vaccinated with 5-in-1) checked, and then sent out! Though I imagine for a cow it's a hell of a lot scarier!

did some research and the last sentence is in fact NOT sarcastic, they are sensitive to water pollution
AT least these are almost all plant eaters; not-too-dissimilar damselfly and dragonfly larvae however... I used to yearly donate about 100 frog eggs to a nursery, one year with a bonus two darter larvae. Near the end those ate about a tadpole each per day... it was a race to see if any would reach froglet stage =(. However everybody was enchanted when the larvae climbed out and turned into dragonflies... it almost made up for the daily horror of tadpole murder.

We had them in a house I grew up in as a kid, which was built pre-70s. It was SO handy. I haven't seen them anyway else though. Every kitchen should have one! Much better than those rubber sponge thingies.
Load More Replies...I have a jar opener handed down - there's like a ratchet, and you open and close/tighten it by turning a little wooden handle. I've heard it called a 'gilhooley' but I don't know if that's just my family's term for it.
I find knocking at the top edges of a jar lid with a knife a few times will open most. [Is how I opened a small jar of sundried tomatoes friends of mine had failed to open after many 'strongman attempts'. I whacked it three or four times and the lid popped off with ease...]
It's a jar opener. My husband made one for us. I use it often. So handy
This Rainbow Effect?
Answer: A rainbow is a rainbow. The cause is refraction/dispersion of light due to water in the air.
Looks like it’s raining over there. The shape is just a matter of angles and height.
Hmmm, I've seen hundreds of rainbows in the sky and they all arched. So ,a rainbow is a rainbow' is hardly an answer and a little bit patronising. This is clearly an unusual rainbow. I think the poster knows it's a rainbow but wants to know why it's shaped this way. Nothing worse when somebody patronises you because they don't have an answer.
There are actually many different types of rainbows besides the common arched rainbow we are all familiar with. They are pretty cool. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.worldatlas.com/amp/articles/what-are-the-different-types-of-rainbows.html

What Are Those Things Called? I Think They're Typical Of Gothic Architecture?
Answer: Flying buttresses. They’re there to transfer the weight of the roof outwards to stop the walls bowing and collapsing.
Yes they are a decorative necessity, as said the side walls will collapse without them, doubly so with a big tower on top.
Slight correction, they aren't there to transfer the weight of the roof outwards. Rather they resist the tendency of arches of the building to push outwards. But(tress) the important part is that they transfer the outward pushing force into a downward force that is carried by the towers at the end of the buttresses. Horizontal forces are "hard" to deal with. But if the horizontal is turned into a vertical force, which is easy to deal with (your transferring the force into the foundation. Romanesque churches had very small windows and very thick walls. Flying buttresses are one of the most significant advancements of gothic architecture. Thinner walls -> less stone, less cost. It also allowed more windows to bring the light into the building. Romanesque churches might have had 5-10% of a buildings be windows. Gothic made 50% easy to achieve. San Chappelle in Paris has an astounding 90% of the walls are stained glass.
It's long time ago I was on top there but remembered immediately :-)
Load More Replies...Gothic architecture is amazing! People had made some significant realizations about statics (the pointed arch being the main part of that), which allowed them to deviate from the bulky Romanesque walls style to almost airy designs full of windows and pillars. Basically, how to remove/redistribute almost all the substance of a wall until it's just a collection of pillars with a few arches... Whatever structures are left (minus the decorations, of course, and the roofing) are absolutely VITAL and under a ton of pressure! Some central pillars in gothic churches sound like a gong when you hit them.
Just come in Milano, and you will see the real Gothic architecture ;). Milano (and Italy in general) is FULL of ancient masterpiece of architecture in every corner (Italy have the most UNESCO site in the world). Plus you can get the original "aperitivo".

What Are These Circular Metal Things On These Stairs? I Just Hit My Knee And Goddamn Did It Hurt
Answer: Skateboard prevention device. Keeps em from grinding on edges.
I can see why some people would think this is mean, but turn about is fair play the city has probably had signs prohibiting skateboarding, asking people nicely, ticketing them, and it still went on. The kind of damage long term wear and tear would have not only on the curbs but the railings can put everyone at risk. Not to mention when they need to re-do the curbs and railings its coming out of the cities budget (if in the U.S. not sure about overseas). You can see the 'pebbled' like texture on the steps. My bet is this was their last resort. Added bonus, the constant grinding on the edges and rails can become a safety hazard, which can lead to lawsuits (U.S.) especially if its on public property. I don't care if people want to skate board, go for it, but follow the postings. They put them up for a reason.

Load More Replies...It's not just them simply "grinding" they usually apply a wax to the edge as well to go faster. It's obnoxious and makes it difficult to clean up the dirty melted wax. If the surface is porous like unsealed cement it's impossible to clean up. It's basically property damage, i'm glad these things are becoming more common.
Dude, I know it might sound weird, but there are unofficial rules to skating. One of them being, don't wax s**t that isn't yours. Especially at skate parks, it ruins it for other people.
Load More Replies...I see both sides here. I can understand why people are frustrated with thoughtless skateboarders, but then again there are worse things they could be doing. Not all of them are arseholes.
I am a life long skater but I also work in commercial construction so I have to see both sides of this. It's hard to look at a sweet curb, planter, or knee wall and not see the grinding potential but these clips are installed to protect the finish and to avoid liability from a skater getting injured.
There are curb-guards on the curbs and concrete planters where I work, but they're just 1/2-inch angles -- enough to stop a skater, but not cause injury to passers-by. Bad design.
Good job, sometimes those skateboarders don't think about the costs to towns and cities.
Not only for skateboardes but also for blind people. It tells them where the start of the stairs are and where the end is
Sorry about your knee and hope no permanent damage was done unless you were skate boarding on a do not skateboard on curb. I love skate board watching. It is thrilling to see at the skate board parks. I could watch for hours at their skill and how polite they are taking turns. And to see a competition on the TV I will getting nothing else done. I hope your knee does get better.

I Found This Hanging From The Basement Rafters Of My 100 Year Old House. It Appears To Be Two Marbles Or Something Similar In A Hanger Of Some Sort. Any One Have A Clue What This Could Be?
Answer: It's a razor blade sharpener. A 1930s salesman's special and it doesn't even sharpen the blades just realigns the edge and gets you a few more shaves.

So when the person found out they'd been conned, it found its way to a nail in the basement, possibly as a reminder not to fall for a conman's tricks again?
Looks more like a place to hang electrical wire. The two marbles are glass, they used to use glass insulators on old electrical poles.
So it's a razor blade honer, similar to the steel rod in most knife sets. Btw you can always use a piece of fabric from an old pair of jeans or a strip of leather to hone your razor blades.
Found In A Crawlspace Of A House From The 80's Next To 3 Red Boxes Encased In Concrete. What Is This Thing?
Answer: This label is used for materials with gamma and neutron emissions This label was specifically used on containers shipped by aircraft, and that reference is from the late 50s/early 60s. Any red label is going to be Group I or II, which as stated above emits gamma rays, neutrons, or both, and is potentially harmful even with the box closed. OP's lid came from something shipped by air, but it's interesting to note that on ground shipments of the same class of materials (like with the label variant I found in my first edit), the trucks themselves were required to be marked "CAUTION" or "DANGEROUS - RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS" on the sides and rear of the vehicle just to haul this kind of material.
Post author update: As of today a 3 man team from the state of Utah department of environmental quality, division of waste management and radiation control, uranium Mills and radioactive materials section (holy [crap]) showed up at my friend's house around 10am and spent a few hours taking readings, swabbing samples and asking questions and after all of that, found nothing but natural trace amounts of radon. The "lid" they think was from the late 1950's and was unrelated to the "vault".
So, where do you work? Takes a deep breath: "department of environmental quality, division of waste management and radiation control, uranium Mills and radioactive materials section"
I can just imagine the scene in their office: Three guys (that's the whole section) playing an endless game of poker, day in, day out, whatever the weather. There's the 'veteran', nearing retirement, long beard & lots of 'back in my day' stories. Do nor place undeveloped film within 5 meters. This is a strong radioactive source..
My friend told me about a disk he found. The top was thick plexiglass. Inside was a disk that glowed all the time. He checked it with a Geiger counter, and it was very radioactive.
Around the perimeter, it said "U.S. Radium Corp. The metal backing had a clip on it.
He found it alongside the road at Todd's Point beach park in Greenwich, Connecticut.
He and his brother dismantled it and it stopped being radioactive.
He said it was similar to this photo. 07BD656D-3...5c346.jpeg

Also if you set the kitchen timer for just 5 minutes you can tear through a surprising number of dishes so you're less likely to get a backlog.

When they gained power in 1933 and starting getting attention across the globe for their behaviour, a group of Hindu elders wrote to Adolf Hitler, saying that if they continued to use the Swastika at that angle (The Nazis had rotated it by 45 degrees to how it was normally used),it will bring you bad luck.
Too bad Asshat didn’t listen to them... we’d be celebrating that symbol instead of forced to not use it bc of the horrific circumstances involved with it now.

The symbol was used decoratively in many cultures before the Nazis used it. Have an embroidered table runner from Sweden from the late 1800s-early1900s that has the swastika on it... have seen it in Native American art from way back too...
I really love it that Bored Panda can teach me things that I never knew. I am Danish and had no idea that the swastika was used as Carlsberg logo.

You know in Florida they bury your pipes under concrete so when your pipes need to be repaired it costs you thousands of dollars instead of the $2.50 the damn pipe would have cost! Or you have to run all new lines from the ceiling. God bless that crawlspace and the people who made it. They were thoughtful and considerate.

Family Heirloom, Very Skillfully Hand Made, Roughly 7.5’ X 9.5’
Answer: It is likely an embroidered napkin that is used to cover the bread (challah) on the jewish sabbath. It is just for decorative purposes, and helps make the table look festive for the Friday night meal . The embroidery has not been completed. The unfinished design appears to be leaves and flowers, with a stylized tree of life around a colorful star of David. The 12 oval areas recall the 12 tribes, a common motif. When finished it might have been bigger, with fringe or a fabric border placed around the main piece. It is a charming piece of Judaica.
In reply to some comments below, it is possible, but I think unlikely, that it is a passover matzoh cover. Pretty much every matzoh cover I've seen refers (has a motif) in some way to the seder, or matzoh, or passover. It is unlikely that it is a tfillin bag. I've made a study of them, and this does not conform in style, fabric, or motifs to any I have ever seen.
This is most definitely not Celtic, or masonic, or demonic, it's a piece of domestic Jewish needlework from the first half of the 20th century.
And why is it in OP's non-jewish family? Someone who liked needlework could have picked it up at a garage sale or a thrift shop decades ago and it becomes a piece of family folklore.
It also may be that a family member was commissioned to make one and never finished the job.
Or the family was Jewish and at some point became hidden Jews, then changed faiths to avoid discrimination. Many people recall unexplained rituals in rslatives' homes, such as lighting candles on Friday evenings, and only later learned why. DNA tests could reveal some answers.
I saw it and immediately thought "challah cover" before seeing the answer. Each of my grandmothers had at least one as a wedding present and inherited others from their mothers. My mother and I each got one as wedding presents. It's super common for little kids in Hebrew school to make imitations by coloring in marker on fabric, often being encouraged to make similar designs. (My parents are the proud owners of the one that I made, and then those my kids 30 years later. )

Found Inside Cremated Remains. Triangular Less Than An Inch Tall And Wide. C And T At Bottom. Did Not Burn So Possibly Metallic. Felt Flexible
Answer: Part of chemo port.
The question is not "what is this thing" ... the question is "why is someone digging through cremated remains?"
Most like morticians. They have to bag the remains after cremation and its not uncommon to find un-burned parts like above, especially surgical screws, plates, etc. Most places won't put those with the remained, so they're sorted out. There's massive regulations on what can be done to the human body after death for disposal, and cremation even more so. That's why they get onto people for 'scattering ashes' of loved ones. You have to have a permit for transporting through air or other commercialized transportation. This is just the U.S. I'm not sure how other nations do it. I want to be cremated but I have heard horror stories about supposedly cremated bodies being found in funeral home attics and in the woods. Can you ever be sure that you have your loved ones remains? My uncle wrote a book about cremated remains. The omega ghost. Anyways, at least this person knows they received their lives one (assuming their loved one went thru chemo). Am I looking too deep into this?
No, you're not. It's a sad thing in our industry, but one we have to deal with. Funeral homes run on a great deal of trust. You are trusting us as Funeral Directors to take care of your loved ones as you yourself would take care of them. Sometimes better than. With that basic expectation comes the expectation that those who work in the industry have a moral compass & integrity that is beyond reproach. So... when something like these incidents you mentioned happened, or things like in NY or TX, one person being a lazy, money grubbing twatwaffle can & will taint the entire industry overnight. It usually takes close to a year to regain public trust after any one of these stories hit the news. My suggestion is: do your research. Find a crematory that has good reviews & set up a pre-need contract with them. Regularly check their reviews after, & if you see anything that gives you pause, transfer your pre-need to another crematory. You can go direct to the crematory & skip the funeral home.

I wonder how old that is? I have a chemo port and it looks like a £1 coin with a tube attached. It is implanted under the skin on my right upper chest. To administer the medication, a special needle is inserted through my skin, into the port, and from that it goes into a vein in my beck, and then into my heart to pump it around my body. Answer: Royal Navy cordite bucket.
Cordite was a new smokeless propellant developed in the U.K. in the late 19th c. and replaced black powder which had been in use for centuries. Cordite quickly came to be used in weapons of all sizes from rifles up to the large guns on battleships. When cordite was required it was transported from a magazine to the gun using a cordite bucket, or “Clarkson Case”. These canisters were reusable so when the cordite was used to fire the shell from a gun the bucket would return to the magazine to pick up a new load.

The wing span would cast a shadow over our entire block. Fun Fact: The Wright brothers could have flown the Kittyhawk inside the fuselage of a C-5A
Not so fun fact - US dropped more bombs (tnt equivalent) on NK than the totality of bombs dropped during WW2.
Really? Including the two nuclear weapons? In 3 years? I’m not doubting you per se, but I know off of the top of my head that the two bombs were 15 and 20 kilotons tnt equivalent alone, not to mention all of the other ordinance during World War II, if we are including all of it by all countries. I’m no expert on explosives, but I think that much would wipe the Korean Peninsula off the map. Seems...excessive. Can you direct me to a source?

Answer: Pachinko machine, a gambling game in Japan.
My dad got one of these for us when we were little. Had it a whole 3 months before my mother made us sell it because the noise from it was driving her around the bend.
I had a game called Kerplunk - it was a vertical plastic tube, where you'd insert pick-up sticks through the center, then dump a bunch of marbles on top - the goal was to pull out the most sticks without dropping the marbles. It was VERY noisy, and looking back, my mom had an alcohol problem at the time, so for someone with a hangover it must've been even worse!

This Pole Suddenly Popped Up In My Local Park, Anyone Know What It Is?
Answer: Surveillance system. The round thing with the cooling fins is a LiDAR a laser sensor, made by a company called Ouster. Probably used for detecting people, objects etc. also in the dark.
And, of course, the spiked disc at the bottom was to prevent people from scaling the pole to take out the camera.
No, No, No! It's secretly a robotic death pole! Lock your doors and windows!
Bag Of Water With What Looks Like A Penny Nailed Above A Shop Door In California. What Is This Thing?
Answer: That's to stop flys from entering.
Doesn't work, but people still believe it.
The theory behind this is distorting the flies view so they won't fly near it, at least that's what I've been told. Never done any actual research on these though.
The sparkling light is supposed to disorientate the fly and encourage them to stay away

There are straight peen (if you held the hammer by the handle the peen would be paralell to the ground), cross peen (perpendicular to the ground) and diagonal peen (the one you have taken an image of).
Mystery Ceramic Or Porcelain Piece Found On Beach In Cancale, France
Answer: When you hold it up to a bright light, is it translucent? Porcelain will be translucent, while other types of ceramic earthenware will not be.
When you run your fingers or a nail over the blue detailing, does it feel noticeably raised or like you could scratch it (as opposed to a relatively smooth surface)? If so, it is likely blue transferware, a later style which developed to more efficiently replace hand painting by transferring a design onto the piece. If instead it’s smooth and not translucent, then it likely is faience ware (Delftware).
Based on the image, color, and size, I would say it’s more likely to be transferware than Delftware.
Additionally, even if it was Delftware, that doesn’t necessarily indicate Dutch origin, as similar styles of delftware were also produced in England and other places (known as English delftware)
Obéissance is derived from the verb obéir (to obey), it's the act of obeying rules; you could loosely translate it as 'follow the rules and have discipline'
What do the words mean? ... google translate tells me obesity and discipline ??? and why are those words on a ? plate ? vase ?
Looks like the rim of a plate or platter to me. It was very common for ships, businesses and even social groups to have large custom decorated platters for the centre of their table spread. 'Obedience and discipline' puts me in mind of the military, although other virtues could have been listed on the rest of the plate.

Answer: That is a vacuum chamber used for material science research. You read up on "Molecular Beam Epitaxy". I have used these systems. Though they look cool, A lot of exotic materials like Gallium, Cadmium, Indium are typically used. It is not a good idea to move to your house were you might be tempted to touch the inside of it. If you can cut plexi glass circle so close out all the vents, it could make a cool decoration. There is a metal shroud on the inside through which water or liquid nitrogen could be circulated to cool down the system. If that shroud develops a leak, then usually the system is discarded. Also due to cross contamination issues, when a project is closed/abandoned the chamber used also gets thrown out.
Great minds... I'd take it home and sell it to a scrap yard pronto.

I Have Only This Photo. What Kind Of A Device Is This?
Answer: Blaupunkt made a gooseneck equalizer in the 80s.
When car audio really took off in the early-mid 80s a lot of vehicles still had the old stereos with two shafts that stuck through the dash, one for volume and one for tuning. A separate equalizer was pretty much a requirement for a more sophisticated system, but there just wasn't anywhere to mount a typical half DIN EQ in a lot of vehicles. This was one solution to that problem. The EQ functions were on the face, and the sliders on the right side let you control balance and fade.
The Apartment I’m Staying At In Granada, Spain Have These All Over By The Baseboards, Like Where There Would Be Outlets In The Us. My Friends From Madrid Had Also Never Seen Them. What Is This Thing?
Answer: Double heating pipe trim. Ideal to cover the tubes seen from the radiators. They are to cover tubes in the wall where you would plug a towel dryer radiator for example.
I still don't understand. Is it used for anything or just used to cover something?
Pipes would come through hole in wall & go through the hole in the trim, I guess they're added to make badly drilled holes look tidier/block drafts coming through the gaps.

Answer: Going to bet it's a locking pawl from a windlass, the winch that raises and lowers they anchor chain
Actually, that's a Tailhook from a jet that lands on aircraft carriers. It drags behind the aircraft on approach and snags the cable that helps the jet slow down instead of skidding off the end of the aircraft carrier. I hope this didn't mean a pilot was unable to land.....
Your answer sounds more plausible since it dropped from the sky. Can't figure why an anchor chain windlass would drop from the sky.
