I once did a group project, the only thing my friend did was creating the title slide, and he spelt the name of the university wrong.

Someone asked me to recommend someone for a freelance job. I gave the name of a former colleague and told the recruiter, "Your client will have to decide if Chris has the technical qualifications, but I can tell you that he does have good work ethics." I'd rather recommend someone who'll stay up all night to figure out a job than an unreliable person who's technically proficient. Been there, waited for them, the slackers can f**k right off!

depends on your boss, really. as far as responsibility goes, I own it when it's mine to own, and its ultimately my decision to hire or not hire. On the other hand, I usually phrase the question as 'would you mind training this person?' usually seems to get a more useful response.

Nah... I asked my boss to hire a former colleague of mine because I knew it would work out well. And it worked out well, of course. We had been on a team for years, which better way to know if someone will be a help or not? And nice for the boss, too, because I could not have complained very loudly if it hadn`t worked, so much less risk for him than hiring just anyone (it`s almost impossible to get rid of employees here and in my company especially as long as they are not doing anything criminal).

You're right, but I don't think the boss should ask, because it could come down to personal relationships, whether or not you liked that person.
