Humanity has progressed quite a lot when it comes to human rights, respect, tolerance, and the like, but there is still a ways to go as inequality and discrimination is still a thing—quite a big one, actually. And the internet has become a bit of a platform for people to share such experiences.

Shira (@shirainspired) recently went to Twitter to ask people what was the most unnecessarily ableist thing a teacher ever did to them. For those unaware, ableism means discrimination and social prejudice against a person with a disability. This is usually based on the belief that typical abilities are superior.

A good number of people responded to her, sharing some of the most heartbreaking experiences they ever had in school.Bored Panda has compiled a list of some of these responses, which you can find, vote and comment on below.

As someone who had an asthma attack and could barely run the small distance to my room before almost passing out, i gotta say this is stupid

Teachers should be encouraging this. If i have a student that is a fast learner and well ahead of the others i will ask him/her to help those that are behind. This helps me out and it gives the student a sense of pride that he/she is doing something good.

You should of had a word with her after class and tell her how degrading it was her acting like that.

My teacher yells at me for doing this too. She actually told me it was "Her time" and everyone should only be focusing on her even though she was just barely talking about random stuff to a different student.

PE teachers at my school were a mix of sadists taking out their inferiority complexes on those not built for sport and borderline paedophiles. Still hate sport with a passion 40 odd years later.

No child should be passing out in school. These "adults" are just horrible.

My friend has asthma so it's kinda hard for her to run, but she gets made fun of for it and people tell her that she is just lazy. This type of situation makes me so mad.

I always had circulation problems. I used to wear fingerless gloves everywhere to protect the hands but being able to write in class. My PE teacher made me run in winter without them despite my hands being purple.

One teacher tried to force me to be right handed by tying my left hand behind my back. I was told I was a daydreamer, slow and would never amount to anything.

If you live in Florida that's pretty common (except no one passes out.) All of us were sweating really hard but the teacher would make us sit outside for the rest of the period.

I bet they only saw there might be some need for excersize, really sounds like they ment no harm. After all it's a PE teachers job to make you sweat and get physical. Sporting feels umcomfortable, still happy it's offered to kids 💭

Did she ever consider that the breathing issues and dizzy spells were caused by being obese? Ive heard running helps with that.

Recognize that!!! I am 72 now, diagnosed at 65 with ADD, so They always told me I was lazy, dreaming in the class, ADD didn't exist by then, so I found out when I was 65, it was a relief .. I now know I wasn't lazy, not stupid, But when I was young I thought I was. Found out I am really good at certain things, like thinking out of the box, good with computers, I am very creative and became an artist, I am now proud of myself, but it wasn't easy..

yeah ik, if a student is really unhealthy they don't just sit there, they were trying to get her to move, being chubby isn't a disability

One sports day I was pressured by friends and bullies to compete in 2 separate races back to back. After finishing the second one I basically collapsed on the ground struggling to breathe. One of my friends gave me some water and asked if I was okay, but the teachers ignored me

The two subjects I HATED at school were PE and Math especially Algebra. I don't mind watching Team Games but I am not a Team Player and I loathe physical exertion and as a 68 year old adult I avoid it like the plague. Math? I was ok at straightforward Arithmetic and Geometry but hopeless at Trigonometry and as for Algebra that was a foreign language to me, and I dropped Math before I got anywhere near Calculus. I am a very hands on Empirical person and find Abstract concepts very difficult to understand.

Our PE teacher hated me so much ( I had a bad knee that required surgery) that he took it out on me in the science class he taught. I had all A's (I'd moved from NY to FL where I was advanced way past his class). One day one of the partners in our group dropped a heated test tube of metal. Without thinking I grabbed it. The palm of my hand was a blister. I didn't go up to him I was going to wait until class was over. The student next to me saw it and freaked. He called me stupid and several other choice names. Enough that another student tried to save the day by stepping in by saying "she tried to save the test tube". He was an awful man.

i had various mobility issues from age 8, and had to sit out most activities as running and jumping and stuff were dangerous for me, as i could have snapped a ligament. and i just got mocked constantly by my teachers. i had one good day, where i was able to join in with our last year dance (age 12ish), but i suffered so badly for it i could hardly move the next day. of course we have PE that day, and they teacher called me a liar because i'd been able to do some dances the night before but somehow couldn't take part in PE that day.

Super, so make someone who could likely really benefit from activity hate it instead of finding something that would help & developing lifelong good habits that are possible.

“Get the Cotton out of your ears” is a really old saying, I’d actually bet the teacher didn’t know or remember this kid had hearing aids.

That's just dumb! You are a amazing artist if you are careful and you draw neatly! Teachers should be proud if their students are so neat and draw like that!

Just because someone seems lazy doesn’t mean that there isn’t something else going on. It’s hard not to think somethings like this but that’s still no reason to publicly shame someone
