The holiday season is in full swing, and we feel like it’s the best time of the year to remember how wholesome, kind, supportive, welcoming, and selfless people can truly be, despite their perceived differences. That’s why we’re featuring the ‘Gates Open, Come On In’ subreddit, an online community of nearly 340k people today.

The online group presents itself as the exact opposite of r/gatekeeping and features folks being true legends who accept others no matter who they are, instead of angry gremlins who don’t want to let anyone new into their communities. Scroll down for some of the best anti-gatekeeping posts and hard proof that people really do have each others’ backs when push comes to shove.

Pssst, Pandas, if you’re looking to restore some more faith in humanity, then you’ll definitely want to check out Bored Panda’s previous article about some more great real-life anti-gatekeeping examples. You can read it right here.

British psychotherapist Silva Neves shared with Bored Panda his take on why some people feel the need to act as gatekeepers at all. "The theory is that it comes from our inner sense of survival. At times when we lived in tribes, it was part of survival to fear people outside of the tribe because they might have been a threat to the tribe," he explained to me. "In our modern world, to some extent, we have kept that sense of survival, although unnecessary now, but still subconsciously strong."

However, Silva notes just how much impact even small gestures of kindness can have. "When we learn to be kind to others, we're actually learning to be kind to ourselves. We need both." Scroll down for to read what he had to say about this.

"We don't often realize that a very small gesture of kindness, even just a smile to a stranger, can trigger a chain of kindness and love to their social circle, and the ripple effects can be felt to the greater society," psychotherapist Silva shared with Bored Panda the power that even a small act of kindness can have in the world around us. In fact, we're naturally hard-wired to help others.

Jesus' teachings were clear with no excuses allowed. He never said "love thy neighbor unless..." or "judge not unless...". The Good Samaritan parable taught that our neighbor was anyone in need and not just the guy next door. Jesus taught humility and washed the feet of the apostles. He exalted those that no one liked or respected on earth. The poor and hated were the heros in his stories. I wish people would read his teachings before they blame him for their snobbery and/or weird behavior.

I remember when I met my husband and my dad asked me what religion he was, I didn't even think to ask as i don't really care - I'm an atheist really but was raised catholic by a catholic mother and Protestant father, but no one was that bothered, never attended church outside of big events arranged through our school. My dad thought it was great that it wasn't something I even considered asking (there a whole catholic/Protestant rivalry thing in Scotland that somehow involves football teams, don't understand it, don't care to - it's just daft but thankfully is a lot better than my dads era). Each to their own, I don't need to agree with someone's beliefs to respect them, just don't try to convince me to change mine. Healthy debate is fine, but don't lecture folk

The problem is when people think discussions are lectures or opinions are intended to sway you. I stopped talking about my Christianity in anything but the terms of myself a long time ago bc in my personal experience atheists like to challenge everything. With the one rare exception of a close atheist friend, if I know someone is an atheist, I don't even mention religion, bc I don't want to be challenged in what I believe. It's obnoxious.

About 20 years ago I was in a gaming clan. At 38, I was the oldest member. Almost everybody was better than me, particularly the kids (there's nothing quite as humbling as being routinely pwned by 14 yo girls). It's funny, but they eventually made me a team captain - not for my pathetic gaming skills - but for my 1337 organizational skills scheduling practices and matches. I remember a 17 yo girl who used to play on our server sometimes. She wasn’t very good, but she really seemed to enjoy playing. Come to find out that she was severely disabled. So much so, that her dad actually controlled her in-game movement and she just aimed and fired. Now, that’s one great dad!

‘Action for Happiness’ explained to me earlier that altruism and kindness are closely linked to our own happiness.

"Think about how you can reach out and do things for others, help a neighbor or volunteer for a cause, we get happiness high from helping other people. Or start small and simply list three things that you can be grateful for each night before bed,” Sarah Vero from ‘Action for Happiness’ shared with Bored Panda.

According to Sarah, the 10 keys to happier living are: “Giving, relating, exercising, awareness, trying out, direction, resilience, emotions, acceptance, and meaning. We are likely to be happier if our lives have direction, meaning, and purpose and if we are part of something bigger than ourselves.”

Yes! A few years ago the call came that there was a bed for me in the psychiatry tomorrow. And I answered that I couldn't come on such a short notice because I still have some work to finish. Well, I spoke to my colleages and they said I can go without bad concious. Next day in the clinic I was running through all the tests and the doctors couldn't believe I was still "working". There don't seem to be many of us. But I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only functional depressed out there. I'm not weird!

Even if a person has depression they still have to eat, have a home, and take care of the highest priority responsibilities while doing the bare minimum to hold it together. People that aren't functional depressives are the ones that usually end up homeless or jobless. I cant believe a doctor wouldn't look at it that way.

Sometimes there's comfort in routine. And safety. But then it becomes too routine and you have to do something to shock yourself out of it before you slide into a full on depressive episode. Well, that's the way it is with me. I have bipolar and clinical depression and I have to be careful not to get so routine that I become too insular.

@ AnnaBanana : As with the topic, I also can relate to this one. Though I'm not bipolar I suffer from depression for a couple of years now. Theraphy didnt really help as got no clue where the depression originates from. Meds help taking the edges off but am reluctant seeing this as the solution. Work does give routine & distraction so helps a bit but when coming home the sad feeling often comes back with a vengeance. The flip side of the depression and staying home, when off from work, is also becoming too insular

Depression has serious ninja stealth skills. You think everything is fine and suddenly you realize you've been in the same sweatpants for 3 days and have nothing to show for your time except empty snack food packages.

    Dasha Slepenkina

The way we handle depression is heartbreaking. If someone tries to "keep it together" and manages to present an image of themselves as capable of coping, we say - "Well, they don't seem to be depressed!" And if someone begins acting out on their pain, we say they're just doing it for attention. When in reality depression is one of the most widespread illnesses in the world and is a leading cause of disease and even death for many demographics. Depression has physical side effects - brain fog, migraines, acid reflux, muscle pain - just to name a few. But we still treat it like something that's "just in your head." The conversation needs to shift so that people can get the help they deserve.

I used to think I had to finish a book even if I didn't like it because I had to add it to my yearly book count. Thank goodness I came to the realisation that I don't in fact have to do it because there are so many good books I can't get to if I do that.

The Skate community is an incredibly supportive bunch. I've see this sort of thing happen so many times and never seen anyone laugh at or humiliate a newbie. All the experienced skaters face planted in front of people too, so the empathy is high with them

I mean, if you've ever hung out with skateboarders, you've seen them fall more than you've seen them land a trick. Falling is 90% of it. They just keep trying over and over until they get it, which is why they're so encouraging to each other.

You know, sometimes kids are nice and have bad parents. This is an assumption and no-one knows if he has good parents or not. Parents sometimes do everything right and have awful offspring. Sometimes do everything wrong and the child is lovely. I'll be downvoted no doubt but praise the right person, the child. They are Individuals.

Vanessa King, the Head of Psychology at ‘Action for Happiness,’ noted that we’re a social species and that helping others out is part of who we are. Being kind, lending a helping hand are the “social glue that keeps us together.”

“When we do things for others it activates the reward center in the brain, so when we give a gift it feels the same as receiving a gift," Vanessa stressed.

“Small daily actions one at a time can help us to make altruism a lifetime habit. You could start out small by deciding you are going to smile at everyone you meet or pay three people a compliment today,” she said.

I have to say the internet ruined quite a few hobbies for me. Going out to find tips and tricks and finding communities full of people who are soooooo much better at it then I’ll ever be, discourages me too much. In “ye old days” I just did whatever I liked and never knew how bad I was at it. So now I just avoid those kind of hobbies online. I’m happier not knowing if I’m good or not :)

I'm getting into woodworking as a hobby. While browsing online for inspiration for my next project, I found someone selling the exact cabinet I wanted to build for 40 bucks. Totally put off as it'll cost me three times that just for the lumber. I was super relieved later when I realised it was a scam site.

I really needed to see this. I have been looking for a hobby so that I can be productive and stop just laying here being useless. But every hobby I try just makes me feel worse because I want to be good at it very quickly. Its hard to keep going with something you are bad at when people around me expect perfection. I'm screenshotting this to look at when I go back to one of the hobbies I've tried and quit.

Why would someone smirk at someone else singing? Granted, I have misophonia which decides to give me terrible panic attacks when I'm around terrible singers for an extended period of time, but if I didn't then I would be able to help them get better at it. They shouldn't have been judging you, and good job for reporting the way you did. You're absolutely right.

Makes me think of my guitar instuctor (paid by my parents - not school related) back when I was a teenager, I´m still angry with: all I ever wanted was to be able to play some easy pop songs however poorly just enjoying myself singing along, but he tortured me for months with ucranian folk songs and such, making sure to let me know what an untalented bother I was to him. Later in life I once talked to a guy who said "I love playing piano, I´m no good but I love it" and I envy him, because that instuctor ruined it for me and I don´t trust music instructors to cope with someone who just wants to learn and enjoy the miracle of getting music out of an instrument without great ambition or talent.

I kind of feel respect for transgender people sometimes. I myself chose not to change my surname with marriage because I was too lazy only thinking about all the stress of changing all my documents in both my country of origin and country of residence, and all the Internet databases handling my information, and the possibility of mistakenly getting accused of identity theft and all that.... for barely a surname. Now, can you imagine the scale of it when you change more than just your last name? Pfffff These people are so diligent and courageous.

Human beings don’t hold a monopoly on empathy. Plenty of other animals have feelings and have demonstrated that they feel bad for other beings if they’re in trouble. For instance, a while back I wrote about an experiment on rat friendship.

As it turns out, rats help each other out if they sense that they’re distressed. However, they prefer to help rats who are most like them. Scientist Inbal Ben-Ami Bartal told Bored Panda that “rats will help others of their ingroup (cagemates and strangers of the same strain) but not the outgroup (strangers of a black-furred strain they are not familiar with).” In other words, rats are selective in who they help. However, this behavior changes the more familiar rats become with members of their outgroup.

And bluntly, that's okay as long as there's fair negotiation and employees can work freely to "get theirs." A corporation obviously benefits from collective bargaining from their side, so workers should be able to from their side. A corporation obviously knows what every worker is paid, so workers shouldn't be punished for sharing their salaries, etc. People in business trying to maximize profits is not inherently a problem - the problem is when that effort is unethical, unfair, illegal, etc. (which, sadly, it too often is).

Nope. I have heard salary bitching in countries all over the world, and often justified. People are naturally curious, envious, and obsessed with fairness--in whatever form they see it. I would pay good money to see white collar workers spend a month doing an "unskilled" hard labor job, and then see if they still argue that those individuals shouldn't be paid the same as a lawyer. People who don't think there is a "problem" are usually not mixing with people of very different socio-economic classes than themselves who work in very different positions.

One of Picasso's daughters gave a snooty talk to a museum group I belonged to. She said "If you don't know you are an Artist by the age of three, you aren't one". Everyone looked at her like she was a goddess dripping wisdom. I thought "FU elitist" and got up and walked out.

My favorite artist lives across the hall from me and started painting at 87, and is currently 95. Her name is Imogene, but she signs all of her pictures, "IMA". I Asked her if that was short for her first name or was it something else ( it's obvs not her initials, I know those) she salts me with, " I don't sign it that way because it's just my nickname, I sign it that way because I'ma artist!" You are indeed.

This, so much this! I'm learning guitar and am practicing in front of my kids because it helps them to know and understand that learning doesn't stop when you're an adult. And, I don't have to be good at it, there's no pressure to be, it's just pure joy.

I agree for the most part but when fetishes aren't consensual and affect others negatively like rape, paedophilia etc. That's when it's not okay.

I've never understand why some people are bothered by what are people are doing in their bedroom. It's not like they want you to do it as well. If it's consensual, for me it's always been, not my thing but whatever suit yourself.

“The encouraging thing is that we then found that cohabitation, living with a rat from the other strain for two weeks totally changes this behavior, and now rats will help that cagemate from the other strain. Even more impressively, after living together for two weeks with one rat of the other strain, they will help strangers from the other strain as well,” Bartal said.

The scientist added that social experience is actually what determines whether or not rats help each other, not their genetic similarity. Bartal said that in one case, rats were fostered at birth with those from another strain. “Like Mowgli, they were raised with the other strain and never encountered their own kind. When they grew up, they only helped rats of the adoptive strain, not the biological strain.”

This is spot on. I worked for an organisation helping people losing their sight and we undertook research to find the most readable fonts, colours etc. Capitals were not the answer. I have some vision problems myself and really struggle with caps. Like Milly my left eye is bad. She most likely finds it a bit easier as it is larger. So just increase the font size to start and make the best use of the tech that is available - there is quite a lot these days.

In Bartal’s view, a lot of the discussion on animal empathy gets stuck on semantic issues. “For instance, the definition of empathy, how can we say that animals really feel empathy the same way we do. But empathy is a construct. We don’t even know what it is in humans really!” she said.

“I operate on the assumption that there is an evolutionary continuum between species, and that the basic building blocks of our responses are shared. Being sensitive to distress in others and motivated to care about their suffering is as old as the moment mother and child became connected for survival after birth.”

Shakespeare was actually very popular among upperclass and rural common folk alike in the US in the 18th and 19th centuries, so your family is a part of a long American tradition, actually. My dad always wanted a daughter after growing up with 3 brothers. Dad tried to encourage me to learn cooking, sewing, knitting. I tried, but it wasn't who I was (or am). When I started rock collecting he would take a day off work and drive us to spots where you could hike and find calcite or Petoskey rocks all over the place. Spent the whole day together rock collecting then grabbing some burgers and talking and laughing. We went to gem shows and rock shops. He wound up so involved in my rock collecting that he took classes and learned cabochon and faceting. Got so good he taught classes for several years. We bonded over it and he discovered that he had a wonderful talent. All because he let me be who I am. Best dad ever.

I remember a 17yo girl who used to play on our server sometimes. She wasn’t very good, but she really seemed to enjoy playing. Come to find out that she was severely disabled. So much so, that her dad actually controlled her movement and she just aimed and fired. Now, that’s a great dad!

I’m the “son girl” of my family. I do all the stuff with my dad that he likes to do and went into very boyish lines of work. We had a company together too for a while. I’m also extremely feminine and was a stripper and briefly did modeling like a traditional girly girl. You can be anything you want. Gender means so little.

My dad had both a son and a daughter. When the son didn’t want to learn welding, basic carpentry, and generally anything about remodeling/fixing a house yourself, he was perfectly happy to teach those skills to his daughter. My stepdad was happy to pass on his skills about maintaining a car yourself, regardless of gender. Gender-based activities and knowledge should go the way of the dodo (specifically teaching only to a specific gender, not things being about a specific gender).

But... what part??? The part where we tried and splatted? The part where we dreamed and are still trial and erroring and tinkering on how to do it well? The part where there was suddenly a social "king of the mountain" about which project developer would become the first to enter "space" in an individually designed vehicle, while still bickering about where the atmosphere ends and the rest begins? The problem that we didnt anticipate but created about by trying to learn how to navigate the heavens we have now created a ring of space junk that is starting to cause us problems in the very thing we are trying to explore? The part where some awesome scientists have seen a pattern in physics that might pave the way to actual warp flight? The endless iterations of imagining how the fascinating theory of wormholes making time travel happen might work? I could go on...

This is super nice to read<3 When people bring up an interest I have, I sometimes get too excited to tell them every thing that I know about that subject (ADHD and autism, btw) it's nice to know some people not only are ok with that, but might even like it? It reminds me of a Tumblr post I read awhile back where the person was just saying that it's ok if anyone to hyper fixate on their posts and spam like all of them in a row. I don't remember exact wording, but they said that they love seeing one person's username over and over in their notifications because they feel like they did good (I believe it was an art account) but it made me feel so nice:)

and why so many get gender dysphoria, these kids tend to even go through a trans phase because of those things, and end up self harming evening more, because they never were really trans, etc.

Indeed. Gender stereotypes are extremely harmful. Same as telling others that they arent "a proper boy/girl". There is no right or wring way of being a woman or a man. Sadly nowadays both the right and some of the left are promoting those sexist stereotypes. I have been told a couple of times how I am not really a woman just a transman in denial just because I dont follow gender stereotypes. Its sad how sexist part of the left has become.

I quite like hotels like this, I like fancy ones too but love me a bargain hotel that you can use as a base, that's comfortable, clean and has the facilities we need. We went to Edinburgh zoo during summer, stayed in a travelodge that was £29 for the night to save us driving home after a long day (anyone who's been there will attest to the fact it's bloody knackering, especially for kids, since it's on a steep hill - awesome view at the top! And the one way system due to covid meant taking the long way everywhere) - my 7yr old has declared that it was the best hotel in the world with the best bed and we need to go back and stay for 100 days - it's tempting

Dave's comment is utter bullshit. I learned about JVP from someone I was dating who was Jewish. She sought out the group after going on her birthright trip, detouring to Palestine, and realizing the massive power imbalance. She wanted solidarity with more Jews who understood the modern apartheid is wrong. Easily 90% of the people involved in her local chapter of JVP were also Jewish. I can't imagine any of the groups supporting Jewish ethnic cleansing as they would literally be targeting themselves. My ex-girlfriend's great uncle was killed in the Holocaust. She definitely wasn't a Holocaust denier. I think you'd need to talk to more JVP members before lambasting them all. Here's a short video: https://youtu.be/uEtF9_yuAnM

My friend group in school consisted of a Mormon, an atheist who had been raised Jewish, a Baptist and me: the disgruntled, religion shopping catholic. If we hadn't lived in such a small, white bread, Midwestern town, we probably would have been even more diverse. Diversity is life and life is beautiful.

I am a huge reader and I absolutely LOVE children's literature. Good children's books are often written in a manner that is more concise, empathetic, exciting, and descriptive. Children's books often have to cover heavy topics (loss of family, war, grief, destruction of natural habitats, coming of age, etc.) but in a way that will be rooted in kindness and personal strength to overcome those difficulties. I find them extremely inspiring. I wish more adults read books meant for children; I think it would change our world.

I have 3 grills and any barbecue becomes a family event. My house rules are: 1) Open top sloped grill (No lid). Bread goods go at the top, burgers at the bottom. 2) Large covered grill: Shellfish, far left. Other sea food near left. Meats, near right. Meats with marinades, far Right. 3) Medium covered grill. Veggies only. Potential allergens on the right (lettuce, asparagus, peppers, etc). With a family as big as mine you've got to cater for all eventualities, as a result no nuts allowed anywhere (even though I LOVE a good nut crumb coating), all marinates and sauces are vegan friendly, and the bouncy castle is mandatory.

I generally don't agree with these kinds of comments, but I must agree here. So many people who call themselves Catholic have no religious education past "Catholics good, everyone else bad", and they try to make everyone around them see that. But since they can't actually use logic to defend their stance, they are easily defeated in a debate and the others develop a negative image of Catholicism and Christianity in general.

I don't usually see vets being jerks to newbs. More often I see people barging into a welcoming hobby that they have no interest in, change it, slander people who liked how it was before, move on from the remains, and if someone tries to put it back to how it was they get doxxed and slandered even more.

Being welcoming is not only polite and nice, but its good for the hobby/fandom/anything else people gatekeep. If there isn't new interest what's the point in making new things for it? I want people to like what I like so there will always be new things to enjoy.

When I was new on Facebook and shared things that apperently were old news but new to me, there were always folks out there pointing it out that it was old news, an old meme but not to me, to me it was new and that's life. A whole damn lot has been done before but that should never be a reason to not do it. If we did then everything would stop around us, go extinct. And we never make that comment when someone is learning to drive for instance, we never say stop that because it's already been done.

I hate it when older people say young ones cannot like old music. My mom is 62yrs old. Young in the 70's. Never cared much about the music back then. Me, her youngest child at 23yrs old made her a big fan of ABBA, Queen, Uriah Heep, Suzie Quatro, ... GOOD MUSIC NEVER GETS OLD!!!!

There are a lot of "Reaction to" videos on Youtube. It's fun to see how young people discover music from the sixties and seventies. Only downside is that there are a lot of channels from people who are only doing it for the money. You can see their fake enthusiasm.

Kashmir was the first Zeppelin song I heard when they were interviewing a guitarist (forgot what band) from a, at the time, very popular dance music group and asking him about musical influences. I had never heard it before and was (and still am) totally blown away by the song. Also first time I heard T-Rex and found out about the whole glam rock period

My nephew acts like he has discovered cats and the quirky things they do. He adopted two, and regularly sends group messages about how surprising and special they are because they won't stop playing in cardboard boxes, or curling up under his covers, or all the things that anybody who has EVER had cats know that every single cat does. At first I was quietly being annoyed, but then told my inner eye-roller to STFU because having your own kitties for the first time, watching them do their kitty things, is effing AMAZING! <3

everyone has ups and downs though, and generally it's not appropriate to share some downs with everyone. For example, it's ok to tell people about your dad passing away and get that sympathy and support, but it's not ok to post stuff about fighting with your partner. Unless it has gone to the level of abuse, I suppose. That for me is a tricky one.

Me in a nutshell! I had a terrible first marriage, and even after 16 years together, my (second; I'm not only his first wife but his first long-term relationship) husband and I are still as crazy in love as teenagers. We value it even more because of how hard we worked to build it together: our oldest is from my first marriage, but my husband has always wholeheartedly fathered all my kids, and doesn't differentiate. We have definitely seen our share of hard times, but when we decided to make a go of it together, we agreed that meant working through our problems, not giving up on them and running away. Despite his lack of experience in relationships prior to me, I have never seen a person more dedicated to understanding my problems and who refuses to give up when I'm upset until he completely gets why I was unhappy, and knows what he can do to work on it from his angle. He is an incredible person, and I am the luckiest person in the world that no one else snapped him up sooner.❤❤❤❤❤

Older generations DID and ARE ruining the planet. That's a fact. We're literally leaving it to them to fix, so I wouldn't be so quick to judge the ones who will be cleaning up old people's mess.

What a backwards thing to say. The Snapchat generation gets control of everything and adults are pushed aside even though it’s supposed to be our turn. Millennials and Gen X got completely tossed aside and the world went from adult centric to child centric as soon as we came of age. And of course Gen Z complains.

As a Gen-Y Millennial, I firmly believe that Gen-Z will probably shape up. In about 5-10 years. The kids just under them, IDK... Right now, Gen-Z are the kids and kid-siblings of Millennials. They try to shut us out and dismiss our passions because their (albeit enforced) nihilistic view of the world is seriously uncomfortable with notions of hope and success. But eventually, especoally once they spend time away from their families and preconceived self images, I think they'll do a 180. In many ways, they are the "experimental generation" of the last century because they weren't raised like any of the other age brackets and have had to adapt to new info quicker than the brain can process it.

Same. But I just go by the attitude that I don't really need to fully understand it to respect someone's wishes and beliefs - I mean, can anyone fully understand without being in that persons head? I don't really understand what it means to feel like a girl or boy or neither but then I've never felt that I'm in the wrong body even when I hated it and suffered an eating disorder. It's not that hard to just respect someone's wishes is it? I'm sure that person doesn't expect perfection from day one and understands that there will be slips through habit and it's not meant to be nasty, I long for the day when you can just express your identity/sexuality and basically any part of your own being and it's met with a nod and everyone just carries on drama free

Oh, there are LOTS of full acronyms. I say this as a queer person. There were also LOTS of full acronyms 15 years ago, so please don't anyone assume that this is new. The most common one I see is LGBTQ. Q is for queer, which includes everything else divergent from "straight and narrow" -- as Kate Bornstein called it. (In Kate's definition, straight people can also be queer if they're inclusive, recognize their privilege, are good allies, and want to be included.) Anyway, LGBTQQIP2SAAAA+ I think may be the longest I've seen. That's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit, androynous, asexual, aromantic, allies, etc. Don't worry. We don't expect anyone to remember all that. But if you identify as someone anywhere on that spectrum, welcome to our rainbow, alphabet soup.

When can we just call people people? Their sexuality isn't where they begin and end, it isn't a persons whole being -yes it's a big part but it isn't the whole part - I'd describe myself as bi, I have a bi child, my other child has a non binary partner, my sister is asexual - and frankly I just don't care - in the nicest possible way - it's not my business, doesn't change how I see any of them, or myself. I really do long for the day that it isn't considered "different" and it provides no more of a reaction than announcing their favourite colour

I wholeheartedly agree, but I think the best way to get there is visibility. If queer people of all different kinds don't make it clear that we exist, then bigots get to pretend we don't, and they do their best to exclude us from just living our lives. That doesn't mean that every queer person is obliged to be out or advocating, but it does mean that we should support those who are when possible.

Oh, Ray. I disagree 100%. You belong to so many groups already. Maybe you identify as an artist, a parent, an atheist, a graduate from a specific school, the funny guy in your friend group -- who knows! We all have lots of labels. It's what we humans do. People don't adopt labels to divide themselves. We do it to find ourselves, find our community, and belong.

My first inkling that I might be no was when I started hanging around my best friend and thinking "if I was a guy, I would love to kiss her". Roughly 3 years later, I still want to kiss her. But we live far away from each other and she never makes any attempt to contact me, so... I am mostly attracted to guys, though. Or, more specifically, I know one specific guy that I want to be with, while I want to date many other girls. Or just one or two. Have to keep it secret from my family though, I don't want them to know. I'm just not ready to be out yet.

I'm really interested in the form of oppression that ace individuals experience in today's society, and what about the culture my kids are growing up in makes this hard - to my mind as an old bird, asexuality is entirely normal. On current evidence I think one of the young people I know is likely a-sexual, but for me it's a real non-issue, because loads of people just aren't that into it - however if it's going to be a peer issue for that young person, I'd like to be fore-warned.

I'm probably showing my age or my ignorance here, but when did it become a thing of scorn not to be attracted to anybody, and so therefore a thing to be defended? Plenty of people aren't attracted to anyone sexually, and it's fine and normal to be single. I always thought it was just a fact of life? Is it because our society has become so sexualised in the last few decades that people who are a-sexual are now made to feel odd and abnormal? That's a sadness.

As an aroace, I can offer some perspective, both offline and online. I live in a very heteronormative society, where women are always expected to marry a man and settle down. So, if I ever said that I was aromantic, asexual, and did not want to marry ever, I'd be judged, my parents would be judged because my society thinks that an unmarried woman is a sign of terrible parenting and misfortune. In many online forums, particularly some parts of Tumblr, the LGBTQ+ community tends to exclude asexual and aromantic people, because apparently, we haven't been "oppressed enough" like the rest of the community. I have the same views as you, but sadly, we live in a strange world.

Looks like they used the same decorating template my mother did for all the birthday cakes I had growing up in the ‘60s and 70s. Kinda happy to see the backlash to the expensive and catered child’s birthday cake, party, presents, etc, that are more for the parents’ social standing than the kids’ birthdays.

If it's only about nipple hiding, technically, it's not a bra you need - an undershirt will do. Also, there are bras without platforms that aren't so effective in hiding nipples. Either way, who cares... if you need support and protection, wear them pretty, if you don't need them, don't let anyone force you to.

I remember when I was 6 or 7 seven years old, in the 70s, and a young woman walked by wearing a T-shirt without a bra. I was too young to notice it on my own, but my mom turned to me and said, “Don’t ever marry a girl who doesn’t wear a bra. It’s trashy.” Now I think, isn’t it trashy to point out—and criticize!—a woman’s boobs to your six-year-old?

yep this one is tricky for me, I try really hard to identify unproblematic media for my kids but end up having to explain sometimes that it was made 20 years ago or 50 years ago or whatever before people had human rights. Sometimes it's easier though. So with Tintin comics, I've let them read most of them but those that have overt racism get put in the cupboard till they are old enough to understand what caused that.

My 10 year old (raised by bi/pan parents) came out as bi very early, and was delighted when Dove Cameron of Disney's Liv and Maddie came our as gay. I was delighted for her that she has role models *working for Disney* that can come out safely these days.

Actually, this post helps. My teen daughter came out as a lesbian… I wasn’t surprised (it had sounded like she was crushing on her friends). But then I became concerned when I came across a google doc with all of her friends labeling themself as bi, asexual, etc, and my daughter would then copy them. This had me worried she may be pre-labeling herself without truly understanding herself. But I guess the best thing I can do is just be there for her as she figures these things out.

To be honest, I'm getting kinda tired of the constant TikTok bashing. Sure, it might suck to you (and me) but the reason it's still around is because tons of people use it and like it. There are also mature users who know not everything on there is real. There is also different kinds of content, not just people with fake bodies. There's comedy, songs, pranks, make up vids and more. (I've haven't been on it yet but I'm guessing that's what it's like) Let people enjoy what they like!

It's very much a thing where I live. Books are cheap here. We have a high rate of homelessness, but no one is going to make much off of books. There are probably over 100 of these stands in my city. I only recently learned that this culture of reading isn't universal. It was so disheartening. It's definitely a core value in my community.

Threats, suicide baiting, doxxing, racism, homophobia, bigotry, all still there on the outskirts of the fandom just like every other fandom, it just gets hidden and talked about less.

Same thing with authors! If you wrote down even the start of a story, your an author! It doesn't matter if you're 60 and just started or 12 and have been writing since you could pick up a pen. It doesn't matter if you're brave enough to show the internet, or if you keep them entirely to yourself. It doesn't matter if its a piece of trash. Its a story, you're an author, welcome to the community!

There's a lot of lore in comics books, especially in DC and Marvel, because there's so much characters and stories and lot of it is super convoluted, plus many of them change all the time. It's hard to convey, but yes, it's pretty daunting.

Read the post again @kjorn . It really doesn't matter what game you play. And if it makes people happy to play games like that, and if it makes people happy to spend money on it, so what? To me, this whole thread is about letting people like what they like and do what they want. There's no need for a comment like that.

My first exposure to FF was Nuklear Power sprite comics, that actually got me into the games themselves

I started playing pokemon, animal crossing, minecraft (amongst others) last year (at 26) and I totally agree 🤗 Never had a console or gameboy before, so this were all new experiences and I love it!

Thanks to my son, I now know all the different types of trains on the London Underground and can identify numerous main line train classes.
