If you feel like you're about to fall asleep when you definitely shouldn't be sleeping, try holding your breath for as long as you can. This increases your heart rate and blood flow, waking you up quickly.
I use this all the time during meetings. Careful though, sometimes it can backfire and you'll pass out from lack of oxygen.
If you feel very hot or that your body is about to overheat, pour cold water over your wrists, this helps the entire body to cool down.
The chewing gum in the plane really works. Perhaps not for everybody
Load More Replies...Makes sense. The wrists have a large amount of bloodflow going through them, so you're basically using your wrists as a heat-sink.
I've treated heat stroke patients-the amount of time it takes to genuinely decrease the body temp doing this is huge. This just FEELS cooler, it doesn't actually drop body temp with the amount of time/water temp that most people woulduse.
I agree. I've tried a number of times. Only thing getting colder is my wrist.
Load More Replies...This works yes, but you have to do it for at least 30 min, atleast I do. I prefer to get a bag of frozen corn and put behind my head or place on wrists.
If you're trying to survive a heatwave without air conditioning, stick some ice - or at least a cold cloth - under your armpits. It works instantly.
If you ever have a really itchy mosquito bite that doesn't go away, putting deodorant on it can help it stop itching.
spray works too, just make sure you haven't broken the skin scratching or it'll burn the heck out of you.
Load More Replies...Apparently the aluminium (check the label) in deodorants eases down the itchiness. Dabbing some desinfecting alcolhol should also work.
If you are outdoors squeeze a clean Plantago leaf, and apply the juice. See Wikipedia for id info, etc.
Bored Panda reached out to the creator of the widely popular “Learn Today” TikTok, Andy Jiang, who’s been making storytelling and fact videos on TikTok for over a year. Andy said he got into TikTok after a friend bet him $20 that he couldn’t hit 1,000 followers on TikTok in one week.
“I ended up taking the bet and getting around 1,100 followers that first week, but it led me to continue creating different types of content on TikTok and eventually arriving at the content I make today."
If you ever get that nasty static-y feeling when your arm has fallen asleep all you have to do is shake your head for a couple of seconds and the feeling will go away.
Another good tactic is to open and close your hands. Also, same goes if it happens to your foot.
"Nasty static-y"? You mean "needles and pins"! There's even a classic R&R song about it!
I thought that song was called "Needles and Pinza". 😜

If you ever feel your gag reflex come on when you're eating food, brushing your tongue or doing something else, literally all you have to do is grab your left thumb in your hand and the gag reflex will go away.
thats because you have to dig your nail of one finger into the nail bed of the thumb, that pain distracts you from gagging
Load More Replies...Is right also ok? Because I'm left handed, so I'm holding the tooth brush...
Aspirated water in the shower make you cough to the point of vomiting? Press your thumb hard on the midpoint of your forehead (bindi). The feeling will pass.
This might have something to do with the pressure point in the area between your thumb and index finger. Pressing it relieves nausea
The pressure point method you mention also works if you are getting a shot in the arm. Especially kids.

If you want to remember something easier, you should think about it right before you go to bed. This gives whatever you're trying to remember a better chance of getting stored in your long term memory.
This is good advice if you don't actually want to sleep and would rather stay up an extra hour or two worrying.
Or just write it down. In fact, if you write it down, you will likely remember it better even if you lose the piece of paper you wrote it on.
True. I used to make tiny cheat notes for exams... Fun thing: I never used them. Writing the notes down, made me memorize them. So I was making cheat notes all the time, full aware I would never use them. I was a sort of a study trick.
Load More Replies...I just write it down in my journal. And I keep a notebook by my bed for the rare occasions when something comes to me in the middle of the night and I want to write it down. There's about a 60/40 split between genuinely useful and utterly hilarious.
Better method. Write it down. Keep a pad and pen beside the bed. Lists relieve a lot of stress in a complicated life.
is this why all the mistakes and worries in my life are hard wired into my memory , because this is when ur mind plays them out, right before bed
Make sure you are getting good REM sleep as REM sleep is when long term memories are made and it is the most easily interrupted sleep from sleep related breathing disorders. If you are having any sleep issues, get a sleep test.
The idea for the video series featuring interesting body facts came after Andy once heard “how you can make yourself happier by just putting a pencil (cleaned of course) in your mouth because it forces your mouth into a smile and tricks your brain.”“I thought that facts like that would make a great video series, and played a little with the wording until I got the 'Tricks that Give you Power' title,” he recounted.
When asked what fact stayed with him, Andy said it’s “that your brain actually subconsciously edits out your nose, and you’re actually always looking at your nose but your brain just doesn’t let you perceive it.”
If you ever find yourself doing some last minute studying, find a pack of gum and chew it. This will give you around 20 minutes where your memory, attention and cognitive skills are boosted.
If you need to remember what you read, chew some other gum than what you normally use. Then when you need to remember (for a test or something) chew the same gum again. The taste will help you remember
Also works with something scented, like parfume.
Load More Replies...I do that on long drives when it's still a couple of kilometers to go before the next stop.
If you need to study something, anything then come up with little things. Like oh that pencil remind sme of this or soemthing
when in college, came across an article of a japanese study that showed chewing gum increased brain activity up to 17%. at the time, didn't know whether to believe it or not but, believe me, gum was always in attendance when taking exams
Chewing gum when a plane is taking off or landing helps equalize the pressure in your ears.
Chewing, sucking or swallowing...and none are guarantees. You might still end up with an earache regardless of what you do.
Opening the mouth like in a yawn helps extremely well (you need to try to lower the BACK of your jaw and open the back of your throat, sort of). ALWAYS works for me. I think it actually opens this little connection between the mouth and ears.
Load More Replies...This is also why Air New Zealand hands out boiled sweets before landing - the sucking motion helps to equalise the pressure. I also used to bring a bag of chewy sweets with me when I flew long haul.
Wait don't all airlines do that? Every time i take a plane they give candies! I thought it's standard but i haven't been outside Europe.
Load More Replies...pinch your nose, close your mouth, and GENTLY blow into your mouth... you will force air into the tubes that lead to your inner ear...
The Valsalva maneuver is a breathing technique that can be used to unclog ears, restore heart rhythm or diagnose an autonomic nervous system (ANS). To perform the Valsalva maneuver, you should close your mouth, pinch your nose shut and press the air out like you are blowing up a balloon. All scuba divers know this
or just hold your nose and pop your ears. . . works just as good, and feels better
If you feel tears building up and you don't want to cry, hold your eyes wide open without blinking, the feeling will go away. If you already started crying but you want to stop, look up with your eyes and keep your jaw relaxed, it will help stop the tears.
Doesn't holding your eyes wide open without blinking dry them out, causing you to produce more tears...?
Technically yes, but when you are close to crying, it's already more than needed. In case you just dont want them to run over your face (so everyone can see), keep your eyes open, relax your face around the nose (relaxed jaw might help with this). Normally, the tears run over your eyes and drain into a tiny canal towards the nose. You want this canal free.
Load More Replies...I call bs on this. If anything, it makes my eyes even more watery.
Have someone perform the Heimlich maneouver on you. It helps when women are crying. Source: Red Dwarf
With 3.1M followers, Andy’s TikTok has been growing, but his content had to adapt too. “My content has become more storytelling-related rather than interesting facts. I like to make sure I keep connecting with my followers and audience to make sure that I’m known for my storytelling and ‘stay relevant.’”
Andy also said that he “started doing more recent interesting news stories that I have come across as well for my content to be things that are happening today, which also helps my videos perform better. At the end of the day, the app will always be competitive and my views won’t always be great, but I try to always put out high-quality content and things usually work out well for me,” the TikTok creator concluded.
If you feel an uncontrollable itch inside your throat, try scratching the back of one of your ears, this helps the itch to go away.
I'm there trying to scratch the back of my throat with the back of my tongue going 'GUG GUGUHUHGUG'
Same! But sometimes I'll even try scratching in my ear
Load More Replies...This. Often, an itchy throat is an allergic reaction. You might want to get checked for allergies.

If you get that feeling where your nose itches and you really want to sneeze but it doesn't come out, try looking into very bright light. Studies show that this can help the sneeze come out.
Or if you wanna be mean, if someone tells you they need to sneeze, say to them 'no you don't. You're not going to sneeze. Keep it in' etc and they won't be able to do it. They will be stuck with that unfulfilling feeling of having not sneezed.
This is so mean! :D It happens to me when my hubby says 'bless you' before I sneezed. Then it is stuck there forever!
Load More Replies...Photic sneeze reflex. Looking into bright lights or even on white walls often helps me - but on the other hand on bright, sunny days I also have to sneeze almost every time I step outside. Can be a bit annoying.
This is called Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helioopthalmic Outburst Syndrome or ACHOO syndrome I am not making this up by the way as I have this too and it is really annoying especially during COVID
Load More Replies...This method will only work for some people... looking at bright light doesn't make everybody sneeze!
I've found in some cases, it makes the sneeze go away instead of instigating it.
Load More Replies...This doesn't work for everyone though. I've gotten some really weird looks from people when I said I was looking at the light to help the sneeze come out.
I learned this about forty years ago from a friend who said a Native American he was in the Army with taught him. Works like a charm for me, not at all for my wife.
If you're ever doing a project and need some creativity, raise your eyebrows. Believe it or not, it's been scientifically proven that this makes you more creative.
I find numerous sources making the above claim, some mention a study conducted by a Doctor Richard Friedman through the University of Maryland, however I can find no published scientific paper under that name making any such claims. This claim may be apocryphal.
Load More Replies...It is scientifically proven that a stretch just helps relieve tension. That's all. The end.
If you can't fall asleep, blink with your eyes really fast for a minute. This helps you tire your eyes out and lets you fall asleep easier.
It probably depends on the person, so it may not work for you, but it may work for me.
Load More Replies...This might actually make it even harder to fall asleep since you're now actively focusing again. Bye bye drowsiness.
Yeah I think it's better for if you aren't drowsy at all and just can't sleep
Load More Replies...Does not work. I planned to be in bed by midnight. It is now 7:55am.
I read for an hour every night. Not only does it help distract me from stress thinking, but also it makes my eyes tired.
I won't work for me because nothing does! I cannot sleep until my body is too tired to fight me!
When you're cutting onions, move your tongue to the roof of your mouth, this prevents you from crying.
Only onion induced crying. If you are thinking about your life while you are cutting onions try to tips mentioned earlier to stop crying
This one does not work at all. Crying is caused by syn-Propanethial-S-oxide that is in the onion. When you cut it its released into the air and irritate te eyes. To prevent that wear swimming googles or a gas mask ;)
peel the onions, immediately rinse under cold water and proceed to cut them. NO TEARS.
This. I use the technique all the time, works wonderfully.
Load More Replies...BS. The fumes contain a chemical which hits your eyes, turns into an acid and burns. No tongue trick is gonna work.
If you find it hard to swallow big pills, a really easy technique you can use is just lean your head forward. This causes the pill to move to the back of your throat and makes it easier to swallow.
Considering how many people have difficulty swallowing pills, I am SO glad that I can just chuck them into the back of my mouth and just swallow them without water.
My best way is taking them with a thicker drink, like buttermilk or yogurt drink
It's not a good idea to take medicine with dairy products though...Calcium which is found in milk will bind drugs or antibiotics that prevent absorption into the body. You can Google it if you want
Load More Replies...You can also break them in half if its too difficult for you. But eventually it gets easier. I think that my record is seven pills at a time.
The real question is... can you do it while looking as elegant and graceful as Gladys here?
But the real question is... can you do it while looking as elegant and graceful as Gladys here?
easiest way I have found is to put pills on tongue, take a mouthful water close mouth, clench back teeth together quite hard, swallow, pills plus water have nowhere to go except down your throat !!
The more you tilt your head back the harder it is to swallow, try taking a gulp of water then putting your head back and try to swallow then do the same with your head slightly forward you should find it a lot easier with your head forward.
Load More Replies...If you want to temporarily improve your vision and see further, hold your hand into a fist and look through it like a telescope. This allows a narrow beam of light to enter the eye, which reduces the size of the circle of confusion on the retina and increases the depth of field, letting you see further.
wow I do this a LOT and I thought it was all in my head!! Guess not :) Another thing that helps me is stretching my eyes horizontally with my fingers (hope that was understandable)
If you're having trouble thinking or remembering during a test, readjust your body position. This helps to change the way you're thinking and helps to see the question from a new perspective.
Or think about something else, try singing a song in your mind etc. This helps me to relax and takes away the blockage in my brain :)
My teacher once told me to answer the hard questions first when you have more brain power and the easy ones later
I do the reverse. Answer the questions you know first. My brain gets in the information zone and the hard questions become easier. From a strategic perspective, get paid for the stuff you can do.
Load More Replies...Yeah, when I was in grade school, Danny in the next row would readjust his body position so he could read the answers off my test paper. Worked great.
If you have a stuffed nose, hold your breath for as long as you can before you finally have to breathe. This actually activates your survival mechanisms and your nose will consequently unclog.
Only for a few seconds and after u relax the lethargy mechanism kicks in and blocks nose again
Sinus rinse. It seems like it would be gross and painful, but it absolutely isn’t; just don’t use water that’s too hot—test it on your inner arm, as you would a baby bottle, and then squeeze/squirt, huff, blow into a tissue...repeat. It’s so good and incredibly effective!
If you want to experience night vision: sit in a dark room and get your eyes accustomed to the darkness. Then close one of your eyes and turn on very bright light. After you turn the lights off again, the eye you closed will have night vision.
I've heard this is why lots & lots of pirates wore eyepatches. It meant they would always have an eye adjusted to the dark when they went below deck. Of course, I'm sure some of them were actually missing eyes seeing as it was such a dangerous lifestyle!
The effect is really weird though. I've done this where it's still dark in the morning and I need to get up an hour before my husband, so I lie on my side, covering one eye completely, and read my phone for a bit (letting the blue light also wake me up). Then, when I get up to use the loo, I don't need to put the light on, and thus disturbing my hubby, but can see enough with night vision to function. It creates a disjoin and you lose a bit of your depth perception (not proper 3D image processing by your brain), but it's effective.
No. Your eyes are constantly adjusting to the light levels around you. Stand in front of a mirror in a well-lit room & take note of how small your pupils are. Then, turn off the light & watch as your pupils expand to take in as much light as they can. If you stay in the dark long enough they adjust. Turn on the light again, & you'll see your pupils immediately shrink. That's what this "life hack" is, but only using one eye instead of both.

If you have acne or poor skin, at the end of every shower you should change the water to cold for around a minute. This can help seal your pores and stop dirt and bacteria from getting into your skin.
Not true. Acne is a systemic problem, and "closing" your pores this way only lasts as long as the cold water is actually touching your body.
Somewhat unrelated question: can pressure to a part of your face cause acne? I heard this somewhere but I don't know whether it's true or not.
No. In the majority of cases acne is genetic (latest study suggests around 82% of the time). Acne is caused when the sebaceous gland (the bit that gives your hair and skin it's natural oils) gets carried away and produces too much oil. This then clogs up the hair follicle and creates spots, etc. Lifestyle can be a factor in the severity and there are medications that can also help, however side effects should be considered so please consult your doctor.
Load More Replies...I hate my stupid acne because it's always really bad. This may not work, but I'm willing to try whatever at this point.
https://himalayausa.com/collections/face-care. Take the turmeric one. It helped me a lot. You can try the scrub I haven't tried it. Its a bit expensive so take your choice.
Load More Replies...While a popular myth, it is a myth. Pores dint have muscles and therefore can't contract or close. Your pores are the same size always.
Acne/blisters on your neck chest area? Check your gold chain. Some people can't tolerate gold that is less than 14k. Applies to rings too.
I have a friend who is allergic to metal; she can’t wear jeans because of the rivets, and her wedding ring is made of jade.

When taking a photo, you should always push your tongue to the roof of your mouth when you smile. This makes your smile look more natural and helps chisel your chin overall making you look more photogenic.
How can a smile look natural if it is done unnaturally, I mean who smiles with their tongue pointing towards the palate.
Some tikfocker who thinks he knows it all and feels the need to explain the world to us.
Load More Replies...Yeah, because the real you is never good enough. Don't forget what you've been conditioned to think.
Nothing is more beautiful & natural than your normal smile. No need to learn new ways to do something you've already mastered.
Apparently Princess Diana didn't use to say cheese to smile for the camera, she used to say 'bitch' which produced a better smile. I've never dared try it myself.
Well, dealing with so many paparazzi on a daily level, you'd be using the same tactic as well ♡

If you get a cramp while you're running, all you have to do is breathe out when your left foot hits the ground and breathe in as your right foot hits the ground. This will take the pressure off and make the pain go away.
I assume, he means leg cramps? Because with that "trick", you will get stitch, if you're lucky. Hyperventilation or worse, if you're unlucky. If he means stitch, you need to exhale longer than inhale (think during 5 steps vs. 2 steps). That should help. If you start to feel dizzy, stop immediately and just walk for a bit and breathe normally.
Judging by the 'This will take the pressure off and make the pain go away', I think the OP does mean stitch, al least it seems more descriptive of stitch pain.
Load More Replies...No, it won't. Cramps and stitches are caused by an acidic buildup in your stomach, caused by too much carbon dioxide. Start breathing out as much as you can during breaths. Take a normal inhale and breathe waaayyyy out. It will go away in ten seconds.
If you cramp while you're running, you're running faster than your body can handle, and need to slow down for a little while.
If you're ever feeling sad, put a pencil between your teeth. This moves your mouth into the shape of a smile, which tricks your brain into feeling happier.
I am running to the patent office with a horse bit designed for humans. I mean horses always seem happy despite our fat arses sitting on their backs and I figure it must be because the bit forces them to smile
Please don't put dirty things in your mouth! Your dentist and hygienist will not thank you!
Or you could just smile without the pencil, thus avoiding looking crazy. Even a fake smile causes your brain to release endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine.
Wait... isn´t it a sign of agression too???? Animals (pimates too), show their entire set of teeth in a false smile when they are really angry.
Some days I think the only way I can put a smile on my face is to put a coat hanger in my mouth.
What an absolute crock. your brain is the starting point of everything we feel. A pencil in your teeth can't override that, ffs.
If you're experiencing anxiety, blowing air on your thumb can help reduce your stress.
It just sounds like a distraction technique. You might as well tell people to start playing the trumpet.
Different horses for different courses. Different people require different techniques and stimuli to manage their anxiety.
Hey! Wait...are you trying to trick us by being sensible?

I have a medical degree. I call BS on just about all of these. Cold water doesn't help a migraine; blwoing on your body won't stop anxiety; the thumb-gag reflex thing is iffy; and do NOT cough when someone is about to put a needle in you. You ruin their aim. Bad idea.
Smell the flowers and blow out the candles. This will work on kids to help them calm down when sad/scared/crying. It gets them to focus on breathing in through the nose, out through the mouth, and slowing the whole process down. I figured blowing on your thumb was something like that. Get you to focus on breathing and distract from the anxiety.
