Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Institute for Policy Studies has been tracking the rapid growth of rich Americans' assets, and it's become one of the most disturbing reminders of inequality during a crisis that has devastated ordinary families.
As the U.S. approaches 1 million deaths from Covid-19, the country's billionaires have seen their combined wealth rise over $1.7 trillion, a gain of over 58 percent during these challenging times.
So when internet personality Bilal Harry Khan tweeted about the disconnect between the classes, it really struck a chord with other Twitter users.

"Overhearing rich people's conversations always cracks me up," Bilal said. "The things they casually do in their social lives truly remind you how broke you are." In just a few days, his words received 136,000 likes and, more interestingly, inspired folks to share examples of these exact situations.
From 60-year-old ladies hitting it off by talking about their mansions to a student complaining about having to attend her dad's hotel openings, here are some of the most outrageous ones.

Load More Replies...I read an article a while back. Writer for a men's magazine (GQ, maybe? I forget) talked about how he decided to look into men's undershirts--was there really a difference between the $5 multipack at Walmart vs the $300 bespoke single undershirt from a fancy place? He looked at a lot of different undershirts from a lot of different places, and he decided that, while the single $300 shirt was nice, in his opinion you reach a point of diminishing returns after about the $50 mark--plenty of department stores have designer multipacks at the $50 price point, and those are very nice shirts, but once you start going up in price beyond that point, the quality just isn't special enough to justify it.

I was curious and looked it up. So the average salary after getting your degree as a "care giver" (though it's called differently where I'm from) is 5000+ a month. You very much need a degree to do this job (at least when you want to work in an official capacity). So to those who think $15 an hour is an appropriate salary: you are very much part of the problem you have in the US!

U.S. corporate after-tax profits hit a record high of $2.5 trillion in the third quarter of 2021, further enriching wealthy executives and shareholders. One factor behind the profits spike, according to writers Sarah Anderson and Brian Wakamo, is the fact that giant corporations have used the excuse of pandemic-related supply chain bottlenecks to jack up prices for gasoline, food, and other essentials.
Workers, particularly those at the bottom end of the wage scale, have gotten some long-overdue pay increases, but these were not the result of any employer largesse. Instead, many have gone on strike and taken other actions to leverage their power at a time of pandemic staffing challenges. Unfortunately, rising consumer prices are taking a bite out of those wage gains.

It is sad but real unfortunately. I am now in my 60's, never owned a house (I was the only wage earner and not earning well enough to purchase a property) and to top it all, in my mid 40's a bitter divorce left me tens of thousands in debt. A lot of hard work and I am now debt free but boy, do I treasure every penny I have and respect it too. The rich? Mostly completely opposite of that.
To be fair: it's absolutely possible to own a 1.5mil house and NOT be rich in your everyday life. Pretty much the normal price for any middle class family home in the denser populated parts of Germany. I cannot imagine it's really different in the US.
Maybe in places like NYC or most of California that people are familiar with. The only homes selling for 1.5m in SC are going to be luxury homes, you could easily find a single family home south of 300k (appraised value. The price you could command for that same house is crazy in the current market). There is no way this woman, who is complaining about the cost of maid service, is anything but rich.

Most of those rich ppl know deep down they don't deserve that wealth, hence they have huge imposter syndrome which makes them A grade a holes and stingy af.
I disagree. These people actually “absolutely” believe they are entitled to everything they have and even more $$$. They also think that if you don’t have $ it’s because you’re not good enough and don’t deserve it. That’s why they don’t tip.

I delivered pizza in the 80's. Same. My area covered some of the wealthiest neighborhoods and then regular homes and apartments. One time, delivering to a beautiful home, the wife yelled back to her husband "How much should I tip?" He replied "nothing, let them work for it like I did". Hmmm. I have read that Door Dash drivers can choose their deliveries and may not even pick up your order if there is no tip included. Guess this driver is the exception.
Once it's rejected by drivers enough, doordash will up the base price til someone takes it. If someone's food ever takes 2 hours, the tip wasn't enough to cover the gas to deliver it. As a former pizza deliverer i wholeheartedly agree with this. Spending 4$ in gas to deliver food then someone stiffs you is absolute c**p
Load More Replies...One of my sons did a deep dive into the psychology of the rich. He said in their minds, they are their money and their money is them. Whereas money is a tool for me, to enable me to pay bills, etc., to the wealthy it's their whole identity. Something threatening the loss of any of those funds is like a physical affront. They equal their wealth, their wealth equals them, and without it they have no worth as a human being. Also explains the arrogance of the wealthy - those who aren't rich have no worth. I'm far from being wealthy, but at least I'm aware that I have worth that isn't dependent on how much money I have.

I use DoorDash a lot. I also live out in the middle of nowhere. I always tip the highest amount. When I get my hair or nails done, I always tip 25%. Most of the time (like yesterday) it only amounts to 6.25. However, there are really wealthy people where I live that tip like c**p. Tipping well makes me a good customer and they, in turn, take extra care of me. It's a win-win situation. If I cannot afford to tip 25% for the service I receive, then I cannot afford the service. I need to wait until my finances are better.
There are several prominent case studies and analysis reports that provide insight into income inequality, income disparity, and income distributions in the U.S. and across the world.
The Urban Institute, for example, is one of them. In an analysis of 50 years of economic data, the institution showed that the poorest got poorer while the richest got much richer.
Between 1963 and 2016:
- The poorest 10% of Americans went from having zero assets to being $1,000 in debt.
- Families in the middle-income segment more than doubled their prior average wealth.
- Families in the top 10% had more than five times their prior wealth.
- Families in the top 1% had more than seven times their prior wealth.

Went back in to the service department and asked the first guy I saw if he knew this fellow. He pointed to the counter and, sure enough, there he was. Gave him his wallet, he gave me an "odd" look then turned and calmly went about his business. Even the service writer couldn't believe it but I just looked at him and said, "Doing the right thing is reward enough" loud enough for "wallet man" to hear. This time he turned and started pulling out his recently found wallet but I quickly turned and walked out. I didn't expect a reward but I DID expect a simple "Thank You".

I don't know if it's the same in other places, but in the US, there are subscriptions for pretty much everything they can manage. For quite a few years now, the recurring billing model has been the holy grail of all marketing. It's easy to get you to spend more without realizing it. Or they get a bit extra when you want to quit because maybe you forget for a cycle or two. Or the friction of changing keeps you from trying a different supplier. Some common ones: meal kits, prepared meals, produce, meat, coffee, wine, beer, cheese, cut flowers, grooming supplies, clothing, common software that you used to purchase a single copy of that didn't expire. I have a few myself because they can be very convenient.

I worked at a big, very famous hospital which takes care of lots of middle-eastern royalty and heads of state. The hospital didn't ultimately go for it, but they took the furniture.

In 2018, the Economic Policy Institute released a report showing a general trend toward increasing incomes of the top earners following the 2008 recession. Between 2009 and 2015, the incomes of those in the top 1% grew faster than the incomes of the other 99% in 43 states and Washington D.C.
Many factors can be associated with this trend, including salary stagnation for wage-earning Americans, tax cuts for the richest Americans, a loss of manufacturing jobs, and a soaring stock market that inflated the worth of corporate executives and hedge fund managers.
Post-recession, companies are also investing heavily to hire and keep workers with specialized skills in fields such as engineering and healthcare. This has caused reductions or new automation takeovers in other functions, pushing down wages for workers in less competitive positions.

Some of you may not like this but here is what I've observed. People born into money see the life as a norm. We may call them spoilt or entitled. I think it's too late for me to get out of the endless debt cycle. Hopefully I can keep my kids from entering it
It could have a been a private bank student loan, which has much higher interest rates and harsher pay-back terms. The banks will give those out to a lot of people.
Somebody seriously lied to get that student loan. Either that or the criteria (probably the case) has drastically changed in order to qualify. Friends of my era that got student loans were able to pay them off usually within a few years. That is because the interest rates were ridiculously low and were simple interest, and were not tied to the same standards as regular bank loans outside of scholarly pursuits. Banks are now more predatory on students.
I find this hard to believe. People who apply for student loans have to fill out all sorts of forms and parental income is on them.
That's for federally subsidized loans, not private student loans.

According to a 2022 report by World Inequality Lab, the global bottom 50% captures only a very small share of global income, just 8.5%. This means that, on average, the bottom 50% earns slightly less than one-fifth of the global average, i.e. just $2,915 per year.
The global middle 40% earns 39.5% of the total: its income is very close to the global average, at $17,178 per year.
But the global top 10% earns 52% of the total, which is slightly over five times the global average. Its average income per adult amounts to $90,782 per year.

The groundskeepers, horse grooms, cleaning people, cooks, maids, and even those who raised their children for them. Global wealth, however, appears to be even more unequally distributed than global income. The poorest half of the world's population owns just 2% of total net wealth, whereas the richest half owns 98% of all the wealth on earth.
The bottom 50% owns, on average, $3,019 of assets (typically in the form of land, housing, deposits, or cash).
Among the richest half of the global population, the middle 40% owns just 22% of total wealth (on average $42,570 per adult), and the top 10% owns 76% (i.e. $573,350 per adult, on average, including a large share of financial wealth such as stocks and bonds).

We bought safety with money. And it's not like people with lower incomes didn't suffer monetarily as well. Many lost jobs or had their hours slashed, and they wouldn't have the kind of reserves to ride it out like rich people have. So maybe they lost less money, but losing even a little is catastrophic in a way that these princesses likely can't even grasp.
People with money will be the first ones I use as bait when the zombie apocalypse begins.
Research suggests that the effects of the current crises will almost certainly be felt in most countries through 2030. Under these conditions, the goal of bringing the global absolute poverty rate to less than 3 percent by 2030, which was already at risk before the pandemic, is now beyond reach, unless countries take swift, significant, and substantial policy action, The World Bank believes.
The poor poor little fragile thing that has to go get free food and entertainment.....
to be fair, do you wanna go to every one of your parents christmas parties or work event? I get what this is saying, but same time that IS her life, so I can understand
True! Having to attend work stuff for your parents sucks even if it´s fancy. She´s in college and probably wants to do her own thing.

Probably crying cause with gas prices they way they are... cant afford to get there and back. O.o.

With the price of utilities going up, us 'ordinary' people are paying ridiculous prices just to turn on the heating!
My in-laws would go away and leave every light on and most TV's. This would happen when left to go on holiday! Hubby and I would pop over later and shut off all the lights and TV's.
Heehee in my brain I started singing what I thought was the James Bond theme...then a few bars later I realized it was the Perry the platypus song.
Just because the parents are rich doesn't mean the children had nice and happy childhoods. Abuse and neglect happen in rich families too.
Truth. A poor, but loving family is highly preferable to a rich, but neglectful family when you consider long term mental health.
Load More Replies...My uncle was a VP at AMD for a few years, had a high level job at Microsoft in which he'd have lunch with Gates and Balmer, was friends with Woz and sat on a bunch of boards for deciding new tech standards. He knew and worked with all the big names that came up in the 70's and 80's and made computers ubiquitous. He made anywhere from $300-800K a year depending on the job, plus bonuses and stock options. He also worked 18-24 hours a day, spent weeks or months away from his family as he traveled for work. When he became one of the first people in the world to get a degree in Microprocessor engineering, he did it in 2 years and change because he couldn't afford tuition for the full term and was still valedictorian. He busted his a*s for 50 years, took care of his entire, large, extended family and still always found time to always pick up the phone. Never around, but always available. Kids resent that (his sure did) but yeah, these threads sure are dropping "wisdom"
Many incredibly wealthy parents are neglectful and distant. All time and focus goes to the process and kids are to be shopped out to nannies and private schools to be raised. It's amazingly sad, what they are missing out on... I often wonder what their last moments will be like, looking back.
Hahahahaha all fun and games until mommy and daddy cut you off. I'm sure then they'll just go marry some rich guy. Parents house, sorority house, husbands house.
What does "yt girl" means? Do they mean YouTube personality?
It is a derogatory term for a white person. (Whitey=YT)

Yeah, I kind of agree with this one, to tell the truth. If you can afford it, it's a much nicer experience. Or if you're working for a company that will pay for it (that's how I get it), it's very nice.
I once splurged on business seats for a short distance (only 10€ more expensive!) and man I was spoiled instantly. Sitting in the lounge where food and drinks are free, having space on the plane, real food from real dishes, the stewardess knew our names...I cried a little when we went back to our normal lives.
Ugh, I cringed that I just cringed at this. I guess I'll raise my hand and call myself the a*****e since I won't fly coach. Ever. I'm tall, I don't like people, it's a win-win for me.
They have a point though. For longer flights I always try to get a seat with extra leg room. Because I physically do not fit in many economy seats (very long thighs). Sitting cramped for 6 hours gives me 2 days of pain. I never book 1st class though, wish I could afford it. Ended up in there one day because of overbooking, it was heaven!!!!
Having flown trans-pacific in Business a few times, it will be impossible to go back to Economy.
Honestly if you can afford it, I don't blame anyone for opting for first class. I'm only 5'1" and I feel like I have no room whenever I go on a plane (which is like.... once in maybe the last 6 years?).
As an Aussie, we're used to flying long distances to get anywhere (e.g. 14 hours to west coast USA, 24 hours give or take to London). Most of us normals fly economy class wherever we go, although I've gone business class for my last couple of trips (absolute luxury). My boss is obscenely wealthy and he's one of those who will waste money on a 1.5 hour business class flight to Melbourne...so ridiculous!
Sadly, a million will only get you a normal house in Toronto. It's horrific. No normal young couple can afford a house. It is sad and I'm not being sarcastic
Same in Boston. Our traffic is bad in part because you cannot afford to live near where you work in Cambridge or Boston.
Load More Replies...A million will get you a very nice house in Portland, like a 4bd/3ba Victorian, but not a mansion. My friend who has scrimped and saved his whole 55 years just bought an 800 sq ft (75 sq m) for $480,000. Housing prices are criminal these days.
It's frightening that reading this doesn't even make me blink. Australian house prices are so out of control, it's not funny. Sydney has a median home price of more than $1.5M.
In the town where I grew up in North Jersey, you'd be lucky to find a house for just $1 million. It's absurd.
Lunch with some retired co-workers: "I won't cruise on anything but Celebrity". On a different level but still........
"Glass blown pumpkin patch" makes me really nervous. Like if I walk through that, I am guaranteed to break something.
My mother has this super rich friend she's known forever and every time they move house, the houses just get bigger and bigger. Last one I was in, her walk-in closet in the bedroom was bigger than my entire apartment.
I have a secret shoe addiction and in my last home, I had custom shoe storage built in (cost me a fortune). I was SO sad when I moved on to a different house and now my shoes all have to live in shoe boxes on the wardrobe floor...(yeah, I'm pathetic!)
A lot of people will scream "you're just jealous!" No, guys, its not jealousy. It's knowing that the work of people scraping by are the reason these people can live like this. There's always "little people" down the chain getting their butts kicked and labor exploited so people can stay out of touch with them. That's where the anger comes from.
Who else wants to build a guillotine, and seize a few trillion in US$, and buy the US a healthcare system, and an upgraded power grid?
No way! I'd rather sleep hungry and cold than to threaten the weiner shaped rocket ship billionaire industry.

(2 of 2) Second one was being in my first class on the first day in University and the girl behind me is complaining to her friend that her Dad bought her a BMW instead of the Mercedes she wanted and how angry she was. I turned around and said, "my first car was a '71 Used Chevy 4-door with faded blue paint...and I didn't even own it...my Dad did. Be grateful for what you have." The people on either side of me (friends of mine) all snickered..and she stopped complaining.
Along these lines - first class on first day of college and there is a girl, dressed to the 9s, hair and make up done, wearing designer heels, carrying her LV bag and whatever at 0730!!! My pajama pants and oversized hoodie wearing a$$ became best friends with a fellow pajama pants and oversized hoodie gal from that class. That friend later explained to me that "the rich are loud and the wealthy are quiet" (that's also when I found out my friend's family had more money than they knew what to do with) The point is that flashing your money around, and treating people like sh!t makes you look like a dbag to everyone, across all social classes. It's a bit beautiful that those moments can bring us all together lol.

The best one I ever had was a posh guy I studied with at University who once told us he was going to visit Chatsworth at the weekend (for reference to non-UK, Chatsworth is one of the UK's best country houses- and a major tourist attraction). Everyone assumed he meant visiting as a tourist. No. He was invited over socially by the family who owned it.
A young Indian actor recently spoke about having it hard and his parents don't give a s**t regarding his expenses... They pay in extreme cases. Something of this sort he mentioned.... in the same breath, he spoke about having to buy a pre-owned lamborghini at Rs. 1 Crore (huge money) instead of a new one at Rs. 3 Crore (bigger money). He is a decent guy... not a fan but seems nice. But yes.. this statement was something else.. got trolled massively
