The student debt crisis has become one of the hot platform topics for candidates on the 2020 election circuit, but for the people it affects it is more than a campaign strategy. Tuition and fees at public and private schools rose at roughly three times the rate of inflation between 2007 and 2018, according to a College Board survey. Borrowers currently owe more than $1.5 trillion in student loans, an average of $34,000 per person.

The list below is a collection of tweets from people explaining how the U.S debt crisis evolved to this point or sharing their stories on how student debt has impacted their lives since graduating - and they may shock you or be sadly relatable.

I feel so bad for these young men and women. It's not f*****g fair! Starting your life with that much debt must be soul crushing. I feel so bad because when I finished grad school, I had $213 in my checking account and the only debt I had was to the electric company for $13. I wish there was something I could do for these kids.

This should be criminal, I don't understand why the politicians can't meet us half way on this. Why can't student loans be zero to super low interest rates. You pay back the $250k and call it settled (which is still alot' of money btw).

I'm fourteen, and I really want to be a special education teacher when I'm an adult, which requires college. I want to have a job that I love, but I can't imagine being that much in debt. Any time I bring it up to an adult, I'm told that I'll "figure it out" or that "I shouldn't be worrying about that yet". But considering the situation my country is in, I probably should have started saving for college two years ago :(

I'm Gen X. We hae ALL inherited the debts racked up by Boomers and the gutless politicians catering to them. They didn't pay it forward. They loaned it forward, with compound interest....

Let's face it, we have Gen X & Millennials blaming Boomers & vice versa. Meanwhile the politicians & the 1% are laughing all the way to the bank while they keep us stirred up and pointing fingers everywhere but their way

Leo Domitrix, please explain why it's all the Boomers who are responsible? I was born to poor parents in 1054. We...I...have struggled to stay lower middle class all my life. How did "I" contribute to the mess in America? Blame the rich and the politicians. THEY did this. My adult children struggle even more than we did because inflation has harmed everyone not already wealthy.

I’m married to a boomer. As a Gen X, I am jealous that he spent his 20’s and 30’s partying, paying very little for rent, and made a living wage with extra for lots of toys. The only thing I can fault him for is that he was totally apathetic about voting. He could have used his vote for a better future, and still been a party dude with a good job back then. Instead, his first time voting was when he got together with me at 44. Apathy towards the future was like a plague in a lot of boomers.

Why are they mad at them for avocados? Is it because they're taking all the good ones?

There are a lot of blogs, articles, etc about how millenials can't afford to buy a home or pay off student loans is because they are spending all of their money on avocados (avocado toast, specifically.).

Avocados are $1.50. A slice of toast is maybe 20 cents. I challenge anyone to find a meal cheaper than that.

Lol yea but no. Since 9/11, theres prob only been 2.5 million active duty service members to go to the middle east. Now roughly 70% of those are millennials. So about 1,750,000 millennials fought wars in the middle east. Now being that there is 83 million millennials in the US, no, they weren't fighting wars. Only 2% of the millennial population fought those wars. So for you to claim credit is a giant discredit to those men and women. Most millennials were in their mothers basement complaining how their gender studies or liberal arts degree couldn't land them a good enough job to pay for their ivy league degree they paid all kinds of money for. you got a s**t degree....now because you wanted easy street, you are paying for it. it sucks, but you and the people around you, let you make a poor life decision. health insurance pays for tons of things. so that notion is false as well. learn to shop for it if you think it does not. Or try something besides welfare insurance.

If you had actually graduated college with a decent degree, you could have got a job that paid for your insurance. but I point to my 2nd point in post above on that one. So you are shooting @ 50% on your post. Lets continue.... You had a choice in getting that student debt. You could have made an even better decision and went and learned a trade or gained an apprenticeship. Those are really good jobs as well ya know. So that gets us up to 75% of your post being b******t! The only true thing in your post is that we came of age in the worst financial time since the great depression. But lets not compare the two, because they aren't comparable in the least bit. Sincerely, A guy who did the smart thing, joined the military, learned a trade and then got free college afterward as a cherry on top. (Don't complain cuz you suck at life. Dunno what else to say really.)

Avacados are not cheap! If you can afford avocados for daily use, you aren't as poor as you want people to believe. Do you go to movies? Another sign of wealth. Do you go out to nightclubs and drink? Another sign of wealth. Do you go to eat at Chili's, Applebee's more than once a week? sign of wealth. Every Boomer I'm friends with have paid their loans in full for getting their education. I'm tired of Gen X complaining and whining about getting shafted. You could have worked for a few years before you went to college and saved your money. You could have gone to a state school without a car and worked a part time position. But no that meant you couldn't go out partying. The Boomers had some of those same people.

You're missing the f*****g point. We shouldn't have to pay so much for a degree that may, or may not translate to an actual job. Stop defending the system that has thrown an entire generation of people into debt. Debt that you never had to deal with because college was once affordable.

Quite blaming the avocados and the Middle East wars; you "may" have made some poor choices along the way and not reduced your life style.

The US army pays for college. So those who fight wars in the ME for 18+ years are not in student loan debts up to their eyeballs

As a retired professor, I strongly agree with this statement. It is terribly broken, from pre-K up to PhD. The American education system is completely broken.

That's really f****d up, a 17-yo isn't mature enough to take such a huge loan and to understand the ramifications a loan like that has on your life. In my county you could never get that much student loan

Must be nice to be one of the lucky ones. I went to college after raising my children and still ended up with $40,000+ in loans. Now my salary isn't enough to live and pay loans. Their "programs" do not help. Wish I had never gone to college. My Masters is worthless.

In Australia university was free until 1988, but now it is paid for by Government loans - but repaymemts don't start until your income is over a certain threshold. If you never reach that threshold, you never repay the debt.

It's terryfing that someone has reason to write "i did a terrible thing" because he studied for a job he wanted to do. Not everyone likes to be doctor/lawyer/whatever just to pay off his or hers loans.

If your payments are income based, your (compounded) interest will continue to accrue, which means your loan amount will be more when it's forgiven than when it was initiated. The government could have saved money by just paying for the tuition in the first place.
