With the worldwide pandemic ravaging the world, many people find more free time on their hands than they can remember. After all, going out is not really an option at the moment, and nobody knows when it will be.

But it turns out, idle hands are capable of incredible things. And thanks to the subreddit “Something I Made,” which has people sharing their most incredible pieces of work, we now have a full collection of handmade goodness for our eyes to feast on.

From an incredible dinosaur costume built from PVC pipes and foam and a "Game Over" cross-stitch piece, to pants purposefully constructed with pockets deep enough to fit a TV remote and beer, these are some mad DIY skills that may spark your inner go-doer and maker that has been deep asleep all this time.

Not a covid build, this has been on air bnb for about 350 a night, 30 minutes outside Atlanta. There is even a story about it on Business Insider: https://www.businessinsider.in/thelife/news/you-can-stay-in-a-dreamy-fairy-lit-treehouse-in-the-woods-near-atlanta/articleshow/76288240.cms

The worldwide pandemic which has been ravaging the globe has not been the brightest thing in recent memory for most of us. With so many people left jobless and struggling to find hope that everything will get back to normal eventually, it’s only normal to feel more anxious and low-spirited than usual.

But engaging in DIY activities can not only give your idle hands something to work on, it can have some seriously positive effects on mental health. To find out more about the positive effects DIY activities and art-making have on our minds, Bored Panda reached out to Liza Hinchey, a psychologist, art therapist, and a doctoral researcher at Wayne State University.

“Art-making has the special power of getting our minds into what’s called 'the flow state.' If you’ve ever been doing something and found that hours went by without you even noticing, you were in the flow state of mind! Research has shown that the more time people spend in the flow state, the happier they are on average.”

Moreover, Liza told us that art-making can reduce anxiety by “improving 'mindfulness'—known as a nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment.” It’s “because anxiety is often characterized by thinking about the future,” explained Liza, but “focusing on the present moment is a natural antidote to anxiety.”

The psychologist added that art-making activities that “involve repetitive, similar motions (like coloring or doodling a pattern)” are particularly helpful since they “can help reduce anxious thoughts and bring us back to the present.”

And since art-making for many people brings enormous benefits for their mental health, art therapy can be useful for anyone. “While art-making outside of therapy has enormous benefits for mental health, creating art under the guidance of an art therapist can be especially helpful.”

Liza said “it’s great for small children who may not have the vocabulary to express their emotions yet, and can therefore represent them better through art; it’s used to treat trauma in adults, as traumatic memories are often most active in visual centers of the brain, so art can help people process these memories when talking about them doesn’t suffice (not to say that talk therapy is not helpful for trauma—it often is!); it’s used to treat anxiety, grief, depression, and so many other concerns.”

“One of the most powerful things about art therapy is that it can really be adapted for anyone, and requires absolutely no artistic 'skill.' The point isn’t to make a 'masterpiece,' but to explore yourself as a human being,” the psychologist concluded.

Once, during my teenage son's "years of black (clothing)", a leaking bottle of bleach got the better of a pile of dirty clothes. Without effort, we/he had created a group of very-attractive, stylish and unique shirts, undershirts and jeans. Because it was just a pile of clothing mixed in together, the effects were very random and completely visible only after washing. He started a new trend at school.

Meanwhile, a study from Heather L. Not to be mean, but as a stained glass hobbist of years - that's not true stained glass - maybe decal paint? Those hard curve spirals would be impossible - specifically the middle body - right side orange fade to red piece and the Y of the orange shoulder.

For people wondering about bed sharing, depending on the family and the kid, it can be extremely hard to get them in their own bed. It really comes down to wasting hours of your life every night. I never wanted to bed share but it was the only way my kids would sleep as infants. I spent months trying to get my oldest to sleep in her own bed. It would take hours every night, regardless of how tired she was. It came down to valuing my tiny amount of free time a day more than her in her own bed. 15 min cuddling together vs 3+hours every night.

I agree and eventually they decide they want their own bed and space anyway!

Maybe the daughter has her own bed and the parent tried to sleep with the daughter because of the husband's snoring. That's how I read it

Beds in cupboards were very common in the old days... as were grand beds with canopies and curtains. I think it's great you've made a comfortable place for you to sleep. I do not prescribe to the notion that partners should always sleep together... I sleep better on my own.

My husband snores loudly and clears his throat several times a night. I have restless leg syndrome. Neither of us got enough restorative Zz's until we started sleeping in separate beds.

awwwwwww .... I did the same, I got my future hubby's wedding ring made out of an aged Jack Daniels Whiskey barrel, the inner wood is Rose wood because our thing has always been Beauty and the Beast (rose) the gold inlays are because he LOVES yellow gold and the brown in the center? Coffee ya'll. He is a HUGE coffee freak so I had his grandpa in NY send me Tim Horton's (if you know than you know) and that's his fave, so it'll have that with him always. I love this so much. I was chatting with my mum and we were saying that a lot of kids had better come out of quarantine with some serious life skills. They should be able to iron something, cook something other than ramen and possibly balance a checkbook (for the appropriate ages, of course). Maybe even check the oil in a car and change a tire. Woodworking taught this kid patience, how to use a tape measure, level, etc. Great job dad!

I did this recently! My 1000 piece puzzle was missing 4 pieces (thanks cat) so I traced the gaps, scanned them into the computer, 3D printed new pieces, and painted them to match! The 3D printing was probably unnecessary but I think it's fun to use it if I can.

Love, peace, kindness, and empathy are fantastic! I concur. Those things are super important. You can get all of those things from secular moral systems. Science is also very important and special. Hopefully you can reach all of these things with or without Ganesha.
